I'm not shocked that they are in there. But it is pretty funny how they got by. I remember watching the show one time where one of the characters called Yakko "Sire," and his response was along the lines of, "Please, I'm just a kid" or something like that (been awhile since I've seen the episode, so if someone remembers the line, please correct me). I was an adult when I saw that, and I didn't get the joke until my father, who was watching it with me, pointed it out. - Scoop11

one of my favorite songs (season 1, Wakko's America Song) starts out as a parody of Jeopardy, and Wakko hits the Daily Double.

Teacher: You can wager some or all of your money.
Wakko: Hmmm. I'll blow the wad! - psycher7

Oh wow. I couldn't stop laughing at this. I went to bed right after watching the video and I was laughing in my sleep.

Animaniacs is one of the greatest kids shows of all time. In fact, the WB had a lot of great shows that were similar to Animaniacs, like Freakazoid and Hysteria. Not to mention that they picked up the first season of Pokemon (the only good season) from where UPN left off. It was a great time to be a kid.

Kids shows today don't have the same kind of love that went into the likes of Animaniacs. None of the stuff you see today is very appealing to anyone over the age of 10. I love how Animaniacs was written in such a way that many of the innuendos slipped by the censors. That's just great creative writing. Kids will still find the show funny, but won't get a lot of the jokes, while adults can understand the jokes and find a way to appreciate the show just as much.

Thanks, NC. I'm actually inspired to go buy the DVDs of this show now. - Rash

I disagree that musical numbers don't work in children's cartoons. Just look at Animaniacs itself. There was that geography song, and also the one about the presidents. Also, you should know that the majority of people who work for watchdog "parents'" groups don't even have kids of their own! Homeschooled mutants or otherwise. Isn't that terrible? - greybob

Considering that the old Looney Toons had a lot of adult themes and joke, it's only fitting that Animaniacs pick up where Bugs left off. - Griftertm
I hope someone got fired over that shit.
in a manner of speaking, it happened the other way around. WB restructured, people in charge got replaced, and the writers received orders from on high to change the format. - Seanmonster

Animaniacs was one of the greatest cartoons that Spielberg did - however they also had some of the worst characters as well. Specifically, Buttons, Mindy, Rita and Runt (Seriously. Who thought musical numbers in a kid's cartoon would actually work? Didn't they learn anything from Cop Rock or Kid Video?). Then they killed Slappy Squirrel with the same thing that killed Darkwing Duck - bringing minor, kiddie characters into the spotlight for the sake of fanservice, or worse, non-fanservice (making changes for the sake of whiny bitch parents who probably aren't letting their home-schooled mutants watch the show in the first place).

Then they did something even worse.. they inexplicably teamed up Pinky and the Brain with ELMYRA??? What the hell were these people thinking?? I hope someone got fired over that shit.

I remember from Dexter's Laboratory when Dexter and Deedee have decoder rings. Deedee says that what Dexter is doing is for "I-D-K-S-C's." Dexter uses his decoder ring to scramble around the letters and realizes that it meant something offencive and said, "Hey! I'm telling mom!" Later I realized that Deedee was saying "DICKS," but they scrambled the letters to get past the sensors probably. - UberCream

This isn't the only kid's show in the 90s that pushed the boundaries. Remember Rocko's Modern Life? A restaurant was called Chokey Chicken, One episode they're playing a game with a monkey poking his butt out and they're all holding paddles, there's a lot of hippo lady boob shots, etc. I also remember Sponge saying "pissed off" on Salute Your Shorts.
