7.10.08 Yo, Sorry about the lack of updates recently, apparently despite being legally an adult, the University of California system does not recognize my "of age" status until I am 24 and/or emancipated. So, I have been dealing with some really irate people at the transfer admissions office, and that has sucked a lot of my will to live/write out. But now I have returned, and with a subject that, hopefully, many can relate to and enjoy! This is a big one, so those with slow connections should be wary... Updates should be coming more frequently, so look out for them! ****************** Why should Nintendo have all the fun? Its a question that has been lingering in my mind for a time, ever since playing the original Super Smash Brothers on a borrowed system for a couple hours while waiting for a ride to the airport. Especially now, with system exclusive games being a thing of the past; why should Nintendo have the only cross-franchise brawler, especially when most of the featured characters are not suited for the "no-holds-barred" fighting =mentality until receiving a considerable character update in the game development process. (Despite many saying otherwise, I'm pretty sure Peach had to go through at least SOME training.) So, in an effort to even the scale, and in response to seeing the sales figures for the most recent Smash Brothers, I have decided to make a creative brief for a Sony/Microsoft collaborative brawler, Battle Royale (named because we want to distance ourself from anything "Super" or "Smash.") Originally the idea was soley a Sony affair, but in retrospect, despite the Playstation 2 having a wealth of exclusive game characters to draw from, the urge to have Kratos rip Master Chief's spine out through his helmet was too great. Besides, starting up two individual brawlers would greatly reduce the number of playable characters per game, even with the downloadable content. Also, breaking up the games would not provide a strong enough alternative to Nintendo's powerhouse fighter. And, of course, the best reason is because some of the greatest characters suited for this environment were cross-platform between Sony and Microsoft (and PC, but one step at a time here), and it makes more sense to include them in a cross-platform game (at least on paper...). Even though Final Fantasy fans are getting a brawler for the PSP (called Final Fantasy Dissida: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_JNDpXwNrfs), the audience of the title is much smaller than a full on character orgy like our game. You will still notice a lot of Final Fantasy characters on this post though, mostly because there are so many good stories to tell with them, even if they have to be in cutscenes between fights. Needless to say with all the bloody goodness this game is sure to have, it won't stay under Nintendo's "E" or Final Fantasy's usual "T" rating.
So, for your amusement/comments, see enclosed my list of characters and stages for the surely smash hit release, a Sony-Soft co-production, Battle Royale! Some of these may have been featured on a Nintendo console recently or in the past, but as long as they were cross-platform once in their life, they are game. Please note that I have not included a lot of reference pages (once you look at the volume of informaton, you should understand,) however, putting in a word/game/item's name into a wikipedia/IMDB/Google search should bring up at least some information, as long as you include the game title or any other information I have provided with it. Or, if search engines are too complicatied/annoying for you, comment/message me and I'll answer for you or post it on here later. *Please note the lack of inclusion of a "Final Smash/Move" feature, as many complaints on the most recent Smash Brothers was that its presence gave gameplay a cheaper, less inutitive edge. - Characters marked with [**] can be switched out for their partners, ala Pokemon Trainer in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. All characters appear on the field at the same time, but will not interact unless tagged into battle by the player. Characters can only be played seperately as an alternate form. - Characters marked with [***] are only allowed in this game if they have the abilities/appearance of their counterparts in Monty Oum's animated series, "Dead Fantasy" as seen here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ryH1TB4gEUY - Characters from games with a large roster of characters (i.e. Marvel vs. Capcom, Guilty Gear, Tekken, Final Fantasy, etc.) are the most popular/my favorite of those featured in the game. THIS IS THE OPENING ROSTER OF THE GAME. Depending on space: the rest of (a lot of) the roster for those games can be unlocked through gameplay or downloadable content. Alternate Forms: these are different skins that can be applied to a fighter with enough points, which are accumulated during gameplay. They do not affect gameplay. Unless otherwise stated, and technology permitting, the two forms each character begins with are classic gameplay versions and how the character appeared in cinematics and/or cutscenes. Characters that have been featuring in several ports/games can unlock different forms depending on how the character looked in each game. Players will also have the option of purchasing clothing and accessories for their characters with the same "point" system, and may create a customizable version of their characters within certain guidelines in the "mold your fighter" option (includes: color changing of uniform, hair styling, etc.) Cutscenes: As much as we can, we want to have the original development teams working on their character's cinemas. Each character will have an opening and closing film, along with a short interim movie in between each fight. If characters meet in battle than have connecting stories in any way, that should be incorporated into the cinematic. Cutscenes will occur only in single player campaign mode, and will be viewable in Theater mode after watching them the first time. Mini-Games: If the roster is upkept nicely and the gameplay balanced, we shouldn't need any. Modes: Single player story campaign, Versus, online multiplayer, and practice mode. Summons: (similiar to SSB's "help trophies" where alternate characters/creatures attack the other fighters/provide support to a character who uses the "crystal" to summon it *referred to here as the "summoner"*, all summons can be dodged if the fighters jump carefully, summons will appear in random order, although all this can be tweaked through the menu.) Those that do not have lasting effects will wear off between 10-20 seconds: - Dance Dance Revolution: Summoner performs a quicktime event (hitting specific buttons based on colored cues appearing on screen) to send corresponding colored explosions at all other characters. - Crash (Crash Bandicoot): USELESS. Attempts to blow up the stage, but the fuse backfires and blows him up, Wile E. Coyote style. - Mog (Final Fantasy): A bunch of the winged little puffballs fly on screen from above, dropping a varied group of items for all characters to fight over. - Scissorman (Clocktower): This grisly murdering copycat will appear randomly out of every crack and crevice of the field to slash all but the summoner with his giant shears. - Pyramid Head (Silent Hill 2): The fan-favorite monster will stalk slowly on stage from a mysterious fog and do one giant slash with his giant sword, area damagining a part of the field. - Mephisto (Diablo): The demon will appear behind the playing field, taking up the whole background, and summon a wave of undead that with fall onto the field and attack all but the summoner for a few seconds before rotting and dying. - Final Fantasy Summons: All of them with their usual elemental corresponding attacks, with random appearances each summon. Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Bahamut, Alexander, Odin, Titan, etc. - War of the Keyblades (Kingdom Hearts II+ Final Mix, Birth by Sleep): For those that haven't seen the special ending video to the latest Kingdom Hearts, *http://youtube.com/watch?v=DsNEwm0Vp8w*; the field will turn to a barren desert, were the three keyblade masters will fight against the evil sorcerer and his minions, everyone but the summoner being caught in the middle and damaged by their blows. - Godzilla [Various Titles]: The background shifts to a destroyed city, and the giant lizard comes and swipes at the field, damaging all fighters (including summoner) that come into contact with it. - Geohound (Grandia II): A group of grungy, sword-and-shield mercenaries come running across the field, the summoner selects a target, and the screen reverts to an angled turn-based battle screen, where the targeted fighter must block and/or counterattack each mercenary's blow. All other combat is stalled during this. After each Geohound member has hit once, the group leaves the field, and the battle resumes. - King of All Cosmos (Katamari): The celestial ruler calls forth his son, who runs across the field a few times (3) with a ball of rubble increasing with each pass, both dissapear after the third pass. - Hole in One (Hot Shots Golf): The fighting stops, and the camera pans offscreen to a faraway knoll, where one of the characters of the game takes a big swing and hits the golf ball onto the field, where a cup has appeared. Once the ball enters into the cup, items of different variety sprout up and can be picked up by all fighters. - Hydro Thunder: From the right of the field, a bunch of giant riders on giant water bikes blazen across the screen, knocking up all but the summoner. Those will high damage will fly off screen and lose a life. - Gauntlet: All fighters (including summoner) are subjected to the magic/attacks/strong attacks of the three main classes of Gauntlet (Mage, Warrior, Archer), done in the classic arcade side scrolling feel. - Simpsons, The: See [Gauntlet] add humor. No Maggie. - Lego-izer (Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.): a single yellow block that turns all fighters into lego versions of themselves, all defenses down considerably. - Elle (Legend of Mana): Character appears on screen and sings (audio cuts out, music shown to be TERRIBLE). All items are destroyed, characters are temporarily stunned. - Ecco (Ecco the Dolphin): The titular sea creature will swim around the screen (appearing to fly, but just treating the air as water), hitting anyone who comes into contact with its ecolocation for slight damage (summoner immune.) -.hacked (.hack/sign series): The screen shudders and suddenly becomes a log in screen for a MMO, where an error message appears, says that the computer has been infected. The screen slowly returns to the field, where all players (including the summoner) are slowed, poisoned (damaged over time), and the screen appears fuzzy. - Spanish Fly (Grand Theft Auto series): The screen waves and quivers in drunkeness, all fighters movement controls (excluding summoner's) become random. - Metal Slug: Done in the classic animation style, the two leads from the game will bust in from the left and blast everything with a random selection of guns (from the spread shot to the single shot), excludes summoner. Fighters can gain immunity but attacking (and thus rescuing) the old man prisoners placed randomly on the field. - The Gates of Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV): The background shifts to the opening gates, and the field is showered with hellish energy, damaging all fighters (including summoner). - Flower Gun (Grim Fandango): Manny appears (in his Grim Reaper) get up, and takes a few shots at a target the summoner selects. When hit, vines and flowers envelope the fighter and he takes bleeding damage for a few seconds. - Dice Roll (Dungeons and Dragons series): A pair of giant dice roll in the background (an actual home video of someone rolling dice would be preferred) and a random effect will occur based on the number on the dice: from a dragon appearing and blowing an area effect fireball, traps appearing randomly on the field, a horde of goblins stampeding across the arena. Summoner excluded/included depending. - Weirdness (Parasite Eve): An opera singer comes onstage and begins to sing, all characters explode, taking damage (including summoner), opera singer turns into a winged beast, screaming that her name is Eve as she flies offscreen. - Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal Series): the beat up ice cream truck comes blundering into the field showering all fighters (including the summoner) with napalm and other explosives. - Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series): comes and removes all fighters from the field and places them in a cooperative fight against a trio of powerful demons. Once the demons are defeated, the fighters return to the field, retaining all damage. If all characters die fighting the demons, no one is declared winner. - Persona (Persona 3 and 4): The unnamed protagonist from Persona 3 comes on screen and shoots himself in the head, releasing his Persona beast to fly over and attack all but the summoner. - Q*bert: The screen becomes the famous pyramid from the classic game, and players have to avoid the weird alien thing Q*bert as it jumps randomly from block to block (customizable speed). - Giant Monsters (Rampage): The giant gorilla, reptile, and wolf climb up to the stage and begin whacking at all fighters (including summoner) for a few moments before devolving back to their human selves and running off. - Dark Seed (Dark Seed): Everyday objects begin to take on a demented, evil shape/form and attack all combatants, including summoner. - Ambrosia and the Gray Death (Deus Ex): Summoner will be immune to sudden plague in the field, where all player turn undead (damaged by healing items) and slow. - Prinnies (Disgaea): A horde of penguin-like creatures swarm the field, fixing any damage to the environment and all characters, plopping down in the middle of the field and blocking all contact between characters until attacked out of the way. Stages: All stages featured must have basis in a game that fits the aforementioned bill (whether it has a featured character or not). Customizable stages will be an option, as well as placing traps and items appearing in non-customizable stages. Some stages with feature environmental obstacles and breakable scenery, depending. - Race Tracks from: Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, Burnout, and San Francisco Rush - The Milkman Conspiracy and Lungfishopolis levels from Psychonauts - Side-scrolling levels from: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletoads, Contra, X-Men, The Simpsons, Golden Axe, Einhander, Ikaruga, Galaga, and Metal Slug - Zanzibarland and Shadow Moses from Metal Gear Solid - Multiple Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus - The Invincible and other Airships from Final Fantasy - Hell (and some classic 2-D stages) from Mortal Kombat - The God of War's Chambers/Olympus from God of War - The Prison and Insane Asylum from the Suffering - The Prison and Streets of Manhunt - The Streets of Baltimore from The Suffering: the Ties that Bind - In front of the Giant Silver Monkey Head/The SCUMM Bar from Monkey Island - Times Square, Queens, Midtown, and other New York hotspots from too many damn games to remember - The Circular Water Prison, The City Streets, The Hellish Mirror Room, The Demonic Merry-go-round, and Bellevue Hospital from the Silent Hill series - The Mansion and several of its rooms/ground from Resident Evil - A level from Tetris - GLAdoS' main computer room from Portal - The bloody floor of a Roman Colosseum from Gladius/Shadow of Rome Items: Various trinkets and useful/detrimental objects that are randomly (if not customized in the menu) onto the field and can be absorbed by the player by attacking it. - Portal Gun (Portal): Equipped fighter can shoot portals all across the field and advance through them. An d, might I add:
ZOMG Niko Bellic!!!!
But Hulk and Spiderman are really... --odd-- inclusions, and I don't think should be in the game.
Also, more than HALF are FF characters, which is a bit over-the-top.
Also, you should include a bit more unique characters (such as Conker, who you included and I think that would be a great idea...)
So, take out almost all of the Final Fantasy people, the Marvel guys too, add maybe Jak and Daxter (as one character) and ZOMG DUKE NUKEM!!!
