Movie: Hancock Starring: Will Smith, Charlize Theron Originally Written: 7\2/08 DVD or Theater: Theater
Well, let's start things off, shall we? I want to start things on a Negative not, just to shake things up a bit... Well, the Plot sucked, the Origin Story was...Just...Ass... and about 90% of the jokes in the movie were used in the commercials. However, this movie still attains a very...interesting...take on the modern superhero. And this is where the "positive" comes in. Even from the trailers (which were the real big problem with this movie...) I could tell that this movie was starting a really deep and involving premise. I could ALSO tell that this film would be good. It's just one of those movies that, just be looking at the poster, you can 'feel' the EpicNess.
However, judging by my review so far, you'd assume that I was wrong in this assumption, no? Well, Here's the thing about that... I wasn't. This film is great. And I can't really explain WHAT makes it so great!! Is it the plot? Nahh. It's O.K, but doesn't do much that hasn't been done before. The ending, the Climax?? No way. Okay, the last scene was pretty cool (stay for the credits, they're blatantly interrupted at about 30 seconds in by a very funny running gag.) and the ending was...worthwhile...but it left WAY too many things unanswered. Honestly, if the movie does well (which it is so far) I REALLY hope there's a sequel*. This is the opposite to a film like, say, Jumper, which had the same sort of premise, being that the beings are not explained, and remain a mystery in the end, though a personal mystery may be revealed (in Jumper, it was that the mother was one of the "Paladins" hunting for Jumpers. She left when she found out her son was one of them.) The difference, however, between these two films is simple. Jumper stars Hayden Christenson, one of the Worst actors of our time, and has a premise that is absolutely stupid and ridiculous. Hancock, however, stars the very-talented Will Smith, (right out of I am Legend) and has a Very Interesting premise...
Overall, Hancock is a good film, with a very interesting take on characters such as Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man**, and does it... pretty damn well. The comedy works to full-effect, and (despite the fact that it has almost no new jokes in it) is actually pretty funny... It's also Very swear-friendly, and Hancock at one point (if I'm not mistaken) does blow. So, obviously, it's not exactly "for the kids". Also, yes-- the commercial DID bleep out the word "asshole" and replaced it with "jerk" for the TV commercial.
If you enjoy Will Smith, the Iron Man movie, and frequent alcoholism and bad-mouthing children***, you might just enjoy Hancock. Yes, they could've done MUCH better on his Origin Story, but it was still a very enjoyable ride. Ghostmayhem gives: a 3.5 out of 5.
*There is word going around, including from the Director, that Hancock 2 is a definite possibility. AWESOME. **Could Hancock's alcoholism be a reference to Iron Man 2: Iron Man gets Drunk ? --Nahh... ***There was one scene in which Hancock was supposed to hand a little girl a bottle of Whiskey, his trademark, but it was cut due to the fact taht this scene was the difference between an "R" and a Family-Happy "PG-13"...
