Alright, this article is for all the good ol' X-Philes still out there counting down the days until the new movie, The X Files: I Want To Believe comes to theaters after a 6-year hiatus.
What makes a good X-Files episode, you ask? It has to shock you and capture your imagination. It has to be totally unpredictable. And on occasion, it can be funny. So without further to do, these are the Top 10 X-Files Episodes!
10. Pilot- It all starts hear as the young FBI Agnet Dana Scully is assigned to spy on the "FBI's most unwanted" agent, Fox Mulder. Off they go to find the truth about extraterrestrial life, which Mulder believes is out there. This first episode sets up the rest of the series as we know it, and wow, does it do a good job.
9. War of the Coprophages- A very funny episode about a scientist named Bambi, cockroaches from outer space, and a finale that takes place with a bunch of crap (literally) falling on Mulder and Scully. Wow, as crazy as that sounds, it makes for really good TV, and one of the few episodes to make me laugh out loud.
8. Humbug- Mulder and Scully investigate murders in a town inhabited by... sideshow freaks?!?! Yep, one of the funniest and creepiest episodes deals with Mulder and Scully among midgets, Siamese twins, and a man named Dr. Blockhead who says that he's seen the future and that it looks like Mulder. Hmm, wonder what that means...
7. Tooms- A followup to the earlier episode "Squeeze", "Tooms" returns us to the story of Eugene Edgar Tooms, a man who can literally squeeze into any space he wants. After his trial finds him innocent, Mulder goes on a misison to make sure that Tooms can never harm anyone again. But can Mulder stop Tooms before he goes into a century-long hibernation? You'll just have to see for yourself.
6. Gethsemane- One of the biggest season finales in history ends with Scully admitting that Mulder is dead. Or is he? You know we all believed she was telling the truth when we first saw it! But regardless, the direction and writing of the episode, which flips between Mulder's investigation and Scully's testimony is brilliant.
5. Zero Sum- One of the few episodes not to feature Scully features one of the best plots ever written for the series. A.D. Skinner has to frame Mulder in order to assure that Scully's cancer will be cured. And all of this because he sold his soul to the Smoking Man. Tsk, tsk, Skinner.
4. Hollywood A.D.- Imagine an X-Files movie. No, not Fight the Future. No, not I Want to Believe. Imagine if one of Mulder and Scully's cases got turned into a big budget Hollywood movie produced by a friend of Skinner's. And guess who guest stars as the actors who are going to portray Mulder and Scully? None other than Garry Shandling and David Duchovny's wife, Tea Leoni!
3. Die Hand Die Verletzt- Mulder and Scully investigate a Satan-worshipping cult that is run by the... PTA!?!?! Yep, believe or not, one of the scariest episodes ever is about teachers who worship the devil. And don't forget the part where the snake ate a guy... WHOLE!
2. Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"- The X-Files does Rashomon in this very funny episode where Scully recounts an investigation into an alien abduction of two teenagers and the events surrounding it to author Jose Chung, played by the late Charles Nelson Reilly. What works in this episode is that the audience has to make their on assumption about what happened, because although a lot of what happened is revealed, a lot of mysteries still remain. A very well written episode, and easily one of the best.
1. Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose- Easily the best X-Files episode ever. The late great Peter Boyle plays a reluctant psychic who is recruited by Mulder to help put an end to a serial killer. This simple plot takes a turn for the provocative as Scully wonders about the nature of death from talking to a man who can see death before it happens. Not only one of the best X-Files episodes, but one of the greatest episodes EVER for any TV show.
