It's really great to see Ben participating in this comment thread. I haven't seen ThatGuy in a lot of threads and Mike (admin) only typically posts as a moderator. Not to say I don't greatly enjoy ThatGuy videos, but it is particularly nice to know that Ben is reading each and every one of our comments. And to those naysayers of Ben, I ask you to respect that, if nothing else.
Ben: You can't please all of the people all of the time. Not everyone likes ThatGuy videos, or AVGN's, and their dislike could be for any reason. Ben, I think your best comments come from those who enjoy your videos or are on the fence. If you get conflicting comments from people who like and hate your videos, value the ones coming from people actually open to liking your work. The others you may never please no matter what you do. There are critics like that for anything worth a critique.
With that, I'll give my honest take on this contribution:
What Ben did right:
1) Double Dragon II music at the opening?! AWESOME.
2) Eliminating the French subtitles. Good consideration of the audience on that. You can always put them back for submission to any french websites.
3) A fantastic selection in a subject game. Plenty of positive comments in this thread about that. I continue to be impressed by the uniqueness of making a humorous review about a GOOD game.
4) Fantastic and hilarious "Almost Unaltered Memories" segment. I think that segment should be retained just as you have the "Laughing at a french person's accent" segment.
What Ben could work on:
1) How about English subtitles for the "Laughing at a French Person's Accent" segment? That might ensure that everyone gets the joke.
2) I'm still waiting to see a ThatGuy impersonation just like you did a AVGN impersonation in the Powerslave review. The AVGN impression was hilarious! More impressions would definitely be great, and make a connection for fans!

I'll suspend judgment until future videos.
Here's what I think Ben did right:
1) Imitations. I think Ben should explore this more. I laughed really hard when he played the clip of the AVGN theme and then appeared dressed as the Nerd.
2) Several clips and graphics. I just don't like staring at someone for long periods without breaking it up with video examples, etc.
3) Unique genre. Very few people attempt a humorous take on GOOD games. A noble pursuit, if nothing else.
Here's what I think Ben could work on:
1) Slow down, or enunciate better. I know the accent makes this unnatural, but you have to consider your audience.
2) Subtitles. Have them in English, or don't have them at all. French subtitles just make the difficulty to understand worse. Again, consider your audience. If Ben is posting to a french website also, it makes sense to have those videos include the subtitles. But when posting here, he should delete them, or (preferably) include English subs.
We'll see how future videos work out. Obviously TGWTG is the gold standard here among the fans, so it's tough to stand up against him. But, with some corrections, I think Ben has a great shot at landing critical acclaim here. |
