The reason why it is Pokemon instead of pocket monsters is actually for the convenience of the Japanese audience. You see, because of the way japanese works, if it was called Pocket Monsters, they would have to say Po-keh-to-mo-n-su-ta-su. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Therefore, it was shortened to Pokemon. I hope that makes sense to y'all P.S. this is my first post!

However, there is also the awesome Wild Arms 4 opening, but I can't think of any others right now.
Romanization refers to the translation from japanese katakana (which is based on the sound of syllibles), to letters in the roman alphabet. So it is called Pokemon or Pocket Monsters in Japan. In fact, Pokemon even in Japan is usually written in english lettering, while displaying the name in say, the logo for the anime or something like that, like naruto (although i think that it is overrated, i'll use it as an example because it's well known,) which in japan displays the English lettering in the openning of the anime, on the covers of the manga ect. Same thing with Bleach, and others.
To clarify, it work like this: each katakana (one of the three alphabets in japanese) stand for what we would consider a syllible. For example there are katakana for "to" "ta" and "te." So Naruto would be written with the katakana for "Na" then "Ru" then "To." So, in short, Pokemon is still called pokemon, whether it be in Japan, where it oringinated, or here.
Ugh, looking over my post above, it's way too confusing, so i'll try to clarify. Okay, so the name of the series in Japanese is the English words Pocket Monsters represented in japanese katakana, which takes the syllibles of the English words and then translates each syllible to a japanese character. So "Po" becomes the katakana for "Po." then the same is done with "Ke" ect. Because this bocomes very long in katakana, it was contracted to Pokemon. So it's basically as That Guy explains, only he worded it in a way that makes it seem like Pokemon is a contraction of the japanese words for "Pocket" and "Monster," which isn't true.

And when are you gonna take AVGN up on that dare? On his site, the actor/creator of AVGN James Rolfe has a review of Batman and Robin now, but it's not AVGN reviewing it. It's just James Rolfe reviewing it. So I guess it doesn't count.
As for my review of the, um, reveiw. It's great, made me laugh out loud several times. By the way, the american voice actor for James has actually admitted to deliberately playing the character as gay. Also, you think that the naming pun for Jesse and James is bad? There's another villianous duo named Butch and Cassidy. And it doesn't stop there! I've heard that more villianous duos with similar naming schemes have been introduced since I stopped watching the show. And I stopped watching a LONG time ago. Even then, I wasn't a regular/obsessive veiwer. Hey, if any of you guys enjoy/enjoyed the show when you were kids, and also enjoyed this review, I would recommended looking at this site: http://www.pokemopolis.net. It's an examination of the show made by adult fans that lampoons various aspects of the show. Especially the quirks that come from translating a japanese show aimed at teens into a american children's show.
I think the reason 2 Face wasn't hyped as much as the Joker is because they didn't want to spoil the fact that Harvey becomes 2 Face later in the movie. However, anyone who recognized the name Harvey Dent probably already saw it coming when they saw that that character was in it. As for Samuel L. Jackson's character in Iron Man, did you know that the character was actually modeled after Jackson? This was in the comics, a couple of years before they were even considering doing an Avengers movie, mind you. I thought Dark Knight's Joker was too sadistic to be funny. While I did laugh at a couple of his lines I think for the most part his jokes were deliberately made to be unfunny, to give the character a "bad at comedy, great at being a sadistic bastard" quality.
Pokemon IS called pokemon in japan. And digimon is called digimon. Beer is called beer (or Biiru, same thing.) George W. Bush is called George W. Bush. They don't call him the japanese name for bush. Well maybe they call him the japanese word for ass...
Great vid. I liked the part at the beginning with all the eyes. I really don't get AMV's. Aren't the opennings to most anime already AMV's anyways? But still, I agree that when done well, it can be an interesting form of expression.
I also want to know, what anime is that AMV at the end from? Is it RahXephon? Isn't that the one where Japan disappears, and when they find it, it's like on Mars or something? And there are aliens that are like, "You red blooded humans stole our blue-skyed world, so now we blue blooded aliens are taking it back!" Or something like that. Like most anime, it was pretty weird, but I don't remember it too well, and only saw a couple of episodes.
This is pretty off-topic, but does anyone know what happened to Josh Olsen adapting Monster into a movie? I think that manga would translate great to film... if they don't screw it up. Olsen also adapted A History of Violence, as well, so I'm not too worried about that. But what's the stasis on it? It's supposedly been in development for a couple of years, but nothing's been released about it since it was announced back in 2005.
