As a fan, I will say that if you don't like Guitar Hero, this won't change your mind. If your a Guitar Hero fan, more of GH3 rather than World Tour or GH5, this is a solid release. Better music selection than before, actual challenge, and has fine tuned features brought up from World Tour and 5 that were easily solid features. Overall, it's easily the best GH game, while also not being the greatest in terms of it's release position for not doing a whole lot new other than Quest Mode. It's a culmination of the changes over the past few years, fine tuned with a setlist that is just fantastic.
I also disagree about difficulty level. While yes, Lars chapter is tougher than Caseys, it's pretty much the only chapter. Johnny's is rather easy and it stays pretty consistent throughout the game, where things pick up more towards the end, and then finally culminating in possibly the most epic final tier released in a rhythm game. It's not like your every playing something really easy and then out of no where your playing a tier 6 song. At least with the guitar play I never saw it.
Also to folks that don't know, it isn't the final game for GH. Just for Neversoft. GH7 is already being worked on by another developer that worked with the ported version of the game I believe on the Wii, Vicarious Visions. Beenox, is in charge of DLC.

10.04.2010 - 23:41 | QarxFrom what I've seen, I totally agree that it's the best GH game. While it's been a fairly big gap since the last GH I bought (SH), I could see a lot of small changes that I had been wanting to see, and then some (seriously, telling you how long the song is before playing it? Having a mid-song progress bar? Even going so far as to telling you if you haven't missed a note while still playing?).
Heh, funny to see you commenting here (I know this guy from another site), though not surprising considering what the video is =P.

I felt it was necessary that someone in the know of GH related things to comment on this, heh.
And yeah, the progress bar is new, with the note tracking and FC showing feature something from GH5 along with the open bass notes (Or was that GH:WT?) though they added open bass note sustains with the newest one.
Basically, it's what GH5 should've been after i'ts pretty fail setlist, so I think it's a much better release for it lol

This was ~not~ GH6, was it? I heard Keyboard was coming with GH6.

10.04.2010 - 13:01 | zazakoolaidBut if the game has too many lesser known bands in it, then there won't be much interest in the game. Big names will draw people in and can help get the smaller people noticed.

10.04.2010 - 08:35 | novice snobI'm a Rock Band addict, but I picked up this game because I was impressed with the setlist on this one. It's enjoyabe enough, although I do agree that quest mode is pretty repetitive and the power ups, while an interesting change of pace on paper, doesn't add much except get you past the crazy hard final tier songs, and makes the gameplay boring on easier songs. Quickplay+ is set up decent but not a lot of incentive to keep going through it unless you are an achievement whore. Basically, this game abandons casual players for hardcore plastic guitarists. Not the worst idea, considering those are mostly the only ones playing these games now, but it's still stuck in the same old same old routine. I'll probably mess around with it until Rock Band 3 then never reach for it again. Best off renting this one unless the setlist makes you giddy.

10.04.2010 - 10:47 | hellomayoI'm the same (a Rock Band addict) and I picked this game up for the redesigned guitar more than the set list; though I do enjoy that as well.
I haven't played GH since GH3 and I do enjoy it as much as I did with GH3. I also love the guitar. It's a brilliant design and feels great in your hands.

Quite frankly I knew that this day would come, but what surprices me the most is how long it took to reach this point. I love Guitar Hero just as much as the next fan, but in its core the games are a gimmick and back in the early 2000s they seemed fresh and new. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the same thing to happen to this annoying motion control trend that we've been expiriencing lately.

I dont understand the need for innovation with a game like this, all that matters is the songs, if they rock then the games automatically awesome, maybe its just cause im a metalhead but this was one of the best guitar heros to me followed by metallica, van halen, aerosmith and greatest hits, still a good fair review though
-
10.04.2010 - 11:15 | SayaCelineThe quest mode sounds interesting but the difficulty would put me off. I've never been a huge fan of the game unless I'm playing with friends. Even then it got boring after a while.

I always wondered why rhythm games got so popular in the first place, I NEVER liked them and I feel a certain satisfaction knowing that their gimmick appeal has faded and they're losing their clout on the market. Now we just need those motion sensitive mini game compilations to die so I can get some more action packed platformers.

I was a little put off by the game at first, but then when they showed off the setlist, it started to grow on me. I bought it anyway because I have every GH game so why not? When I started playing it, I actually rather enjoyed it. Sure, I didn't agree all of the time with the songs picked and I got frustrated around Megadeth, but since when does anyone play a music game for the damn story? That shouldn't be of any concern to people. The only thing I dont like about music games today is the fact that people only look at the gimmicks like Pro Mode or Keyboard as opposed to how fun the game actually is. To me, this game had a solid fun factor, regardless of whether or not the gimmick was stupid.

Yea because only your opinion and tastes matter, and there aren't enough FPS, JRPG, RPG, platforming around. Have to love these morons that if it isnt part of the 3-4 game genres and someone tries something new that it is stupid. Call it the F'n moron perspective.

10.04.2010 - 15:05 | mikeysamaRock Band will be the series to carry the genre forward. The soundtrack is the most important aspect, and Rock Band has this covered with its massive, ever-growing online music library. GH offers something similar, but its music store is much smaller, and the franchise seems to rely more on releasing full games to update the song list, while adding gimmicks to make it seem fresh. Meanwhile Rock Band continues to evolve with RB3, which will add features that actually matter, such as synths, pro mode, and an actual guitar that can be used as a controller.

10.04.2010 - 15:06 | mikeysamaOh, but as a Rush fan, it is nice that this game will introduce 2112 to a new generation.

10.04.2010 - 15:10 | TheorendilWell i am a Guitar Hero fan, mainly because everyone who lives in Europe outside the UK, essentially, doesn't get Rock Band! Seriously, not even the iphone version! The stores don't sell the instruments and PSN doesn't have the DLC! You can buy the discs though, but not the instruments! EA are geniuses i tell ya! So anyway, i have to say that yes GH has gotten stale. On the othe hand though, it is a party game! If you look at it that way, there;s really not much more they can do! I sincerely hope that they will realise this fact after this game tanks too and they will stop with the full price disc releases and just stick with DLC track packs from now on... I'll probably get this one when its price drops and i don't think i'll have to wait much LOL. BTW, the keyborad for Rock Band looks like very hard work, i don't think it's going to work, especially in party play...

I have it and it's great. The best damn Guitar Hero in a long time. Sure the setlist is odd, but there's only so much recognizable rock out there before you start running out. I've had no problem finding people to play with on Wii and there is no choppy framerate that I've noticed. I thought quest mode was something they should have had in 3 (I actually thought there was one at first based on the intro video) and was glad they finally added it.
Personally I think it's a great game and puts 5, a game that felt dumbed down, to shame.

10.04.2010 - 20:27 | MagmabearI am REALLY interested in pro mode for Rock band 3. That will probably be the last rhythm game that I will ever buy. Hell, I might actually learn how to play the guitar from it (a little bit skeptical, but hopeful). Then after all this is said an done... I guess it's going back to osu! for rhythm game goodness =P

10.05.2010 - 00:54 | fjernWhen did PC lose its major platform status?
You said "..releasesd for all the major platforms" If we look at vgchartz, pc has as many entries into top 10 software sales world as the ps3, and are better ranked than the wii.
Why the exclusion of the PC?

I tried this game at my friends house and decided after 2 hour testing, that I'll leave this on shelf. Setlist has some great songs (all from Megadeth, Uprising, Ties That Bind), but only problem: they had to chose half of the setlist to be filled with total shredfests! Don't get me wrong, I don't hate challenging songs, but Neversoft doesn't have a very good charting policy. It doesn't make song more fun, if you fill the song with awkward 3-note chords and chord changing, it just makes it more annoying and frustrating! They should've called this Guitar Hero: Masochist Edition. The Quest mode was just boooooooring and there is nothing really innovative additions in the game. I'll just stick with RB2 and possibly 3. And no, I'm not buying the special guitar controller.

Normally i wont reply to a comment, but i LOVED The charting in GHWOR, GH5 charted a bunch of BS, and just had notes that didn't even exist (like in medicate, the three notes in the opening, you'll see them if you watch.) Also, i feel i must say, the game should be mainly focused on guitar... It's called GUITAR Hero, not band hero, not rock band. Not to mention songs with crazy or amazing guitars tend to have great tracks on other instruments being that guitar is second to the front in your average rock genre band.
-
I disagree, especially comparing it to GH5, GH5 had a butt songlist, whereas GHWOR had Megadeth, AFI (Amazing, amazing band) Stone Temple Pilots (And my favorite song by them), Machine Head by Bush (been waiting forever to see that in GH, and it was just overall the best one since 3 set list wise. The Note charting blew GH5's out of the water, and it was just a great game. Maybe I'm just stuck in a GH5 mindset and relieved that this one wasn't a veritable vacuum of fun, but i give it a 9/10!
-
10.19.2010 - 12:00 | Birdassasin
I have to agree, the setlist is a whole lot better, when compared to setlist of GH5. I loved Megadeth songs, even though they are really hard and Sudden Death fits really well in final battle and really is a great song! But still, I personally prefer the GH3 setlist as best. GH:WOR comes close to it, but don't surpass it. I also agree on guitar focus: why they call it Guitar Hero, if there's all other instruments as well? There should be two separate franchises: Band Hero (not like the released Band Hero with only pop songs), which focuses on songs, that are fun with whole band, and Guitar Hero, which only focuses on fun guitar songs.
-
The setlist is definitely better than GH5, in fact, way batter. Not to mention the last song you play is more epic. Even if you get owned by the song, at least it won't be due to a saxaphone solo.I have nothing against King Crimson, but why they gave us a song at the very end that of which had mostly saxophone in it is beyond me.
PS The music list this time REALLY put me off too.
