I can't wait to get this game, looks fun, seeing how each Spidey has unique fighting styles.

well to be honest Sage, i think you are a little too harsh on this game. i recently beat it and i thought it was good compared to other games that have come out this year like Alpha Protocol and Dark Void

i thought it was a good game and i did run into some issues with web slinning and game glitches (cant believe you didnt mention the glitches)

but then again i never had an issue with the enemies or fighting since i know as Noir that you need to stay in the shadows unlike what you were doing in the video (not the best footage to use of noir)

i mean overall i thought it was a good licensed game and had room to improve, but it is definitely the best spiderman game i have seen in awhile (counting on how much crap we have seen)

though thats just me and my humble opinion

I am looking forward to this game, it just catches my eye.
• EmperorG  - Looks cool enough to rent.
Hmm, this game's plot reminds me of the final two part series finale of the Secret Wars from the 1994 cartoon series. not the same, but similar in execution. I'll give this a shot when I have time to do so.
• Risergy  - Frustration
I think you nailed it. This game frustrated the crud out of me. It was always one step away from being "good" but it felt like they refused to take that step.

Also, the free roam aspect of the previous games was sorely missed. If I wanted a good action game, there are a lot of other games I could play. But I get Superhero games to have fun with my favorite characters. and Spider-Man 2 still embodies this the most.

I would like to mention something about Web zipping and swinging. I imagine it'd probably be harder to specify which action to do on an Xbox 360 controller because of the controller's very nature. I have the game on PS3 and I've had no trouble at all web zipping and swinging. But I HIGHLY agree with you about the wall crawling. For the most part, it's just nasty.

LOOK before you type man, this review is of the PS3 version. Xbox doesn't have that grey pop-up thing to the side, it has it at the bottom/top depending on the game.

I just beat this game today, so here are my initial thoughts. I am the Spiderman fan you mentioned, and I totally loved the game. Granted, it had serious issues, like tedious fights and glitches up the wazoo, but the story was fun enough to watch unfold, and all the villains were lots of fun. It wasn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it had moments that for me totally made it worth while, but again, I'm a huge Spidey fan anyway, so that might have influenced my opinion. Great review!

I recently got this game, beat it and loved it. It's one of the best Spider-Man games I've played it is also one of the best games I've played all year. I never felt "frustrated" and i never felt the levels were so long that they out stayed their welcome. However, the wall crawling can be pretty messed up at times, I'll give you that.

The only good Spiderman game I ever played was The Amazing Spiderman on Gameboy.
10 hours is your idea of a short game?
Umm yeah, it is... Personally, if I'm gunna shell out around 50 to 60 bucks for a title like this (course its cheaper for the DS, more like 30 bucks) I find that only 10 hours of game play is short.

This just shows how far the industry has fallen when people are seeing 10 hours and thinking it isn't short. Especially in a game with no replay value short of achievement whoreing.

Maybe 10 hours would be forgivable if the game was at least competently made. But, I guess on the same note, if it was any longer, people would probably get sick of the camera, controls, etc and just drop it.

I haven't seen it in UK shops yet, and I'm pretty sure there's no chance of a PC release.

Once again, consolers get a brilliant Spider-Man game.

Makes me almost want to go down to the nearest Factory/Warehouse/ whatever and drive a Forklift, just to buy a console...

Nice review.
Sadly one of the older Spider-Man Games is still the best "Spider-Man 2" for PS2.
The webslinging-dynamics were absolutley great, the controlls were excellent and although the graphic wasn't crisp and often had a klunky look to them, it was just great fun. Many collectible items, nice subquests, interesting mini-games and overall a great feeling of freedom, while swinging through new york city.

"Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 3" (on the PS2) then completley screwed the controlls and from then on, spider-man games all felt the same and we're "ok", but, as you said in your review, really NOT spectacular or amazing. Too bad...

I thought that "Spider-Man" (for the GameCube) was really good, too. The plot was an interesting adaptation of the movie's plot that threw in a whole bunch of great Spider-Man villains, and it was pretty much like how you describe Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, the final boss battle was terrible, the one thing that prevented that game from being a Goldeneye 007 of its time (maybe a slight exaggeration).

this game is perfectly ok as a rental

Now, this made me sad.. I still had hopes for the Game, since I saw the review on Gametrailers. But knowing Gametrailers and there sometimes strange viewing of Games and giving Notes, I thought it could still be a little Pearl, who has just gotten dumped in dirt..

But I will maybe check it out anyway..

This game was ok, but the camera and controls just gave me a headache. And yes, wall crawling was sometimes a pain especially when combined with the crazy camera. I'd say rent it before buying.

When I first heard of this game, I thought that it was a pretty cool concept to have these four different Spider-Men all working toward the same goal and eventually meeting.

Unfortunately, like you and many others said Sage, the camera and webcrawling could be really problematic at times. In my opinion, it is so close to being a good game that it's really a shame that it didn't fully succeed. :sigh:

Good review Sage. You pretty much touched on everything that really should've been said about the game.

o hai, Cam Clarke. How're you enjoying Mysterio?

Anyways, I'm thinking I might rent this game before passing final judgement. It looks awesome, but your concerns, well, they worry me. We'll see how it all goes down.
• ShingoEX
10 hours is "short"? Wow...you kids are spoiled.

Contra is an amazing 16 minute run, and worth every penny of its original $50 price tag. Seriosdly...10 hours????
• KidGrim
avatar
Games these days NEED story, and if you try to shove a large story into a 10 hour game, it feels rushed and it's not as fun. Contra was just "You have a gun, shoot those fuckers and try not to die". Not much story involved, and if there is, I'll be damned if anybody ever cared short of the fanboys.

I had almost the total opposite opinion of this game and loved it. Although I do agree with you in respect to the camera when wallcrawling.

I must say while I respect your opinion i disagree with this one I don't read a lot of spider-man comics or see the movies or shows but my only problem with the game is noir's stealth mechanic making it hard because the guards spot you a lot

Wait...this is the most frustrating game of the year because it isn't the worst game of the year? :eyebrow:
And when was the last time you reviewed a game you liked, Sage? Reviewing bad games is fine if it's a comedic review, but in a serious show, you should probably review good games too just so that your audience will know what a "good" game looks like to you.
Just my 2 cents.

Wow... that was unnecessarily harsh. I have this game and, while I do share a number of your gripes, such as the web and camera issues, I haven't found them so crippling as to be unenjoyable. I furthermore disagree that the combat feels like a waste of time; it has never felt like "padding" and, while I agree that the game feels longer than it actually is, that is because I like the replayability of the individual levels, as opposed to a lot of other games where you complete a mission and can't replay it unless you start over again.

What bugs me the most about your review is that you openly say that you found it "frustrating" that there wasn't enough bad about it. When you are complaining that there isn't enough wrong, you are clearly reviewing in the wrong mindset!

I take all reviews with a dose of salt, but for the reason mentioned above, I feel like I'm going to need an extra strong dose for yours from now on...
• When he said there wasn't enough bad about it to make it truly bad, he meant that it was just ok, and that that disappointed him more than if it had been just a bad game. Reason being because it was so close to being good in his opinion, but its a shame that it wasn't.

And who's being unnecessarily harsh here? Certainly not Bennett, who pretty much only said the game's mediocre. While you're crying about his review and saying that since he has an opinion, you're going to take it with a bigger grain of salt now.

Besides, I think Bennett's more into games that give high quality entertainment, not just plain old entertainment that you could get from any game. And this game definitely isn't high quality, even if it is entertaining at times.
• Kimarous
avatar
It is one thing to express disappointment in a failure to live up to potential and another to express a desire for the game to be bad, which is how his statement appeared to be worded. I know that no reviewer is without bias and I would have easily accepted a review that outright called it mediocre; however, Bennett both meandered around the issue and seems actively biased against my tastes.

I think that justifies me taking stronger dose of salt, don't you think? I'm not saying he has terrible tastes or opinions; I'm just asserting the fact that I feel less inclined to agree with his position.

My only problems were the wall crawling and occasional glitches...

If you're a Spiderman fanboy, this game WILL make you cream yourself. I was so happy seeing all of the characters again, and hearing Spidey's input of clever little quips here and ther (that lost it's novelty when I noticed he only had like, 4 though.)

Buy it if you're a fanboy, I recommend it...

...or buy Spiderman 2. That kicked ass. XB
