08.29.2010 - 01:57 | petrinoi just spent the last 12 hours splaying thru on hard...and holy crap was it fun! died more than i can count but it was fun! i hated the lack of a savegame...

08.29.2010 - 02:06 | CrimsonDuskYeah the game looks promising but no activities during main missions make the game feel stripped and a 10 hour campaign. Gotta admit though at least they didn't try the easy way to throw a multiplayer component to artificially lengthen the game, so my respects to the developers.
I'll probably wait for a price drop but great review Sage nonetheless.
The police REALLY WILL try to get you, which i found really good compared to GTA4 that you can just make them crash into each other or the police themselves will!
You must've played a different game than me. Totally different. The police in Mafia II never tries to catch you, they just follow you at highspeed, run into each other, into buildings, railways, everything really (wether you want that or not) and as soon as you're two streets away, they forget about you in a matter of seconds.
Compared to GTA 4, the Mafia II Cops are just laughably inept.

08.29.2010 - 03:46 | Aulayan60 dollars for a 10 hour campaign and little in the way of sandbox? Yeah, that requires a steep price drop for me before I'd be willing to.

Solid gameplay? Are you high? The gameplay sucks. Hell I wish I hadn't bought the copy as I'm near the end of the game and it's pissing me off all the time now. The combat in this game it total junk, the cover system is clitchy, there are more weapons than needed not to mention selecting weapons is a chore.
The cops are a pain in the ass almost as bad as in the first game. The game is way too linear, it leads you around the nose like you're mentally retarded and gives you no freedom at all.
Money is next to useless as at some points in the game you lose everything but the cars you collected and you literally lose the clothing on your back.
The game at best feels rushed and half-assed to make a deadline.
The story was okay but it didn't want me to finish this piece of crap. Honestly after games like GTA4 they had YEARS to develop this as a contender but at best it's going to be quickly forgotten about. At best this game is a 4/10, it would have been better if they had spent more time on the game fleshing it out and fixing a few of the more buggy parts of it.
As of now I'm trading the damn thing in with a few other old games I don't play for Metroid the other M for my Wii.

08.29.2010 - 07:52 | hobojebusFrom the reviews i read this isnt a full price purchase by any means, may pick it up of steam when it drops to a tenner but i'm not paying retail price for 10 hours of gameplay.

No decent freeride. Which means it's even less then the previous game.
Also, driving in the first game felt more real, and you even had to clutch while shifting gear, that stuff was awesome.
You can see they definitely went for easier gameplay, which is understandable, but a shame.
No sir, I don't like it. They left to much out.
Freeroam does exist, only on PC.
I run a mod site for it, do some googling, sucks users had to make it but hey the internet prevails.
But we're not paying you to make a freeroam. We pay the developers of this game for that. And they don't deliver.
I won't be buying it.

08.29.2010 - 08:46 | VoidKeeperActually that looks like the PS3 version, the 360 version also has grass, that one didn't.
-
08.29.2010 - 08:45 | VoidKeeperI would just like to point out that the PC version has WAY better graphics, not to mentions actual GRASS, not a texture of grass. This seems to be the PS3 version which is the worst of the bunch. So don't blame the game for the graphics or even framerate.
I don't get it why people bitch about the linearity of the game, it's a single-player game just like the last one, if the last one was IMO AMAZING, I don't get it why this one it should be a problem...
I'm still waiting for my copy though, so I can't say anything else, all I can say is that if it's anything like the last one I'll love it.

09.15.2010 - 16:55 | theTrekkieWithTheUnoriginalUsernamePS3 version is just as good graphically as the 360 version, which is to say its not very good for either of them.

Nice review. I've been playing the game so far and the shooting and story are pretty fun.
On a side note. Can you please do a review on Yakuza 3? It's a great game that I don't really think did so well in America because it wasn't that high on people's radar. And the fact that it came out around the time that GOW3 and FF13 did.

08.29.2010 - 12:08 | Deadpool85I'll be getting this as a rental. I was originally planning to buy, since I am a HUGE fan of the original game, which was really awesome for its time. However, the lack of things that should be obvious for an open world game like this one makes this a weekend rental, since 10 hours of gameplay certainly isn't worth the full purchase price. If this was 2002 the game would be a GOTY candidate, but so many other sandbox games have done it better than this one already (I mean, Vice City and San Andreas had TONS more to do).

it really needs to be noted, that this is NOT a sandbox game, the dev's have stressed that numerous times. it's a story driven third person shooter where the city is the level.
do not go into it expecting gta or saints row, its not those.
if you go into it expecting a good shooter with a great story and atmosphere so awesome it wont let you go, then you'll love it.
-
08.29.2010 - 21:56 | StarfishI'm definitely getting my money back for this game

nice review, except, spoiled the part of going to jail?
not a drastic "YOU SCREWED UP THE PLOT OF THE WHOLE STORY FOR ME!" spoiler, but, is certainly a "would of been a bit more surprising had I experienced it" spoiler.
nevertheless, this review convinces me, I will pick this up. maybe when price lowers.
don't see why people wouldn't like this game. theres other games out there that also tell a great story yet you can't roam around freely.
if only it didn't come across as a sandbox game, then maybe it wouldn't of been as huge of a blow?
