After I finished this game I looked back and realized that while it's voice acting, Story, Characters, World and Dialog System were all good. It's the things that you have to go through to get there that weighs it down and then I realized, It's like the first Mass Effect. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Mass Effect but it's game play was really the main thing bogging it down was the game play and some graphical bugs like the slow rendering of clothes and enviroments. I really hope they make a sequel to this so they can know exactly what they did wrong in this game and learn from it like what they did in Mass Effect 2.

    P.S. Good review sage :)

I completely disagree with the above poster about Mass Effect 1. Then again, I played it on PC. I tried it on 360 and it was terrible.

I'm more of a stealth based player, so I'm noticing a different major problem with enemy AI: the enemy knows where you are even when it shouldn't. I was enjoying the game up until my first mission, trying to sneak past these guys and they ALWAYS find me.

I was really looking forward to the game. To bad the thing looks half-finished. That's disturbing considering how much time this thing has been in development.

Generally, I find the more delays a game has and the longer it stays in development the worse it usually gets. I suspect it is because the makers put so much pressure on themselves to make a perfect product that they wind up overdoing it and the thing comes out half baked and crappy (see Daikatana and probably the new Duke Nukem, assuming they ever have the balls to even try to release it). The longer the development, the more unrealistic the expectations become from fans.

Very few games overcome that hurdle. Fallout 2 is one: amazing classic game despite basically being a piece of buggy shit.

I do agree with all the complaints, especially the lockpicking which had me grinding my teeth more then once.

Though I still enjoyed the game. The depth of story and interaction between the cast of characters is really engaging.

I may get flamed for this but the game as a whole reminds me of Deus Ex. Great story and player interaction but questionable mechanics and graphics. I hope Alpha Protocol does get enough success that a sequel gets made and the complaints of the first get addressed.

It more then has potential it is genuinely a good rpg built in the shell of a shooter. The problem is that it looks like a shooter and has the controls of a shooter so people are expecting it to play just like a shooter. Fair enough expectation but well in that mindset it is hard not to be disappointed.

I went in to the game not hoping for a splinter cell with stats but hoping instead for a role playing game set in a world intrigue and spy stuff. I am glad that the stuff that makes this game different they did right and rather then mess up on that and doing the other mundane stuff better.

If you are an rpg fan you should give it a try, a shooter fan maybe not, fan of both give it whirl just expect an rpg and not a shooter.

I honestly don't feel this game is worth it with so many problems with the game. I don't know it just doesn't seem very interesting. Great review.
  • anaeuphis
I was skeptical when I got the game, seeing that reviews are either love it or hate it. And yes, its a typical Obsidian game: great ideas, competent story, not so competent engine programming. But despite the flaws its a fun game with a great story once you get past the initial learning curve.

And maybe its because I played the PC version but graphics? Really? Didn't see any glitches and while the graphics are not groundbreaking they are decent enough to say who gives a shit.

I'll agree with everything in Sage's review here. The only difference?

Lockpicking is retardedly easy and quick in the PC version of the game. The mouse is just infinitely more precise than a thumbstick in that scenario.

'Probably the most disappointing title of the year?' Amen to that, Sage. I haven't played much of it so far, but I find the slowly-responsive controls and clunky AI pretty irritating. I hate how a headshot doesn't always count as a headshot; Alpha Protocol shouldn't have allowed your statistics to determine the accuracy of your aim.

It's a shame, I've waited so long for this one, thinking it might be like Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect put together. It kind of is, but not in terms of quality.

Why is that reviewers still say that the aiming based on character stats is shit? Its a rpg and is not to review like a shooter. If you player skill aiming play a shooter not a rpg.
Why do we have the genre when you review them like shooters? Makes no sense.
Character stat aiming is one of the best things in gaming. I like it very much, and thats why i mainly play rpgs and not shooters.

ME2 was a huge dissapointment for me. Didnt want to buy a shooter. And after realising i couldnt even sell it again...damn drm policy.

Good to hear your opinion on the game Sage. I gave this one a pass because I felt I had too many games of this kind and I really wanted to save my money for something more up my alley.

It's good to know I didn't miss too much because bad gameplay kills much of the enjoyment I can get out of a story. There are exceptions of course, like the Xenosaga series which, although the gameplay was good, felt like an interactive story over anything else. For me though, the story was well told, built up a good mystique, and interested me enough to make that series one of my favorite games series, the second one nonwithstanding.

This game doesn't seem to have that quality. The story seems pretty cool, but the gameplay is far too clunky for my tastes. I tried it at a friend's house and that assured myself that I had made the right choice.

Wow, that was a long-winded explanation when it wasn't meant to be. Oh well, I look forward to your next video Sage. :)

this is just another example of the evolution vs. innovation conundrum. AP was designed to be innovative and it is but because of that they don't have as much $$$ or man hours for polish so people complain about that. every one who says the game industry doesn't want to inactivate punch yourself in the face, because they do and they try to but instead of thanking them for the inactivation they put in you whine about the lack of polish. guess what your to blame in this case and plenty more.
  • The problem is that games should have a certain degree of polish, whilst evolving/innovating at the same time. No polish = no immersion for many gamers. So instead of complaining about how people review games, how about you figure out a decent argument first?
  • DeRa1s
Nice review, although I have some nitpicks:

    1. You do not spend APs on perks. Perks are automatically given depending on your playing style (number of stealth kills, pistol kills etc.) or dialogue/story decisions.

    2. After playing through the game twice it seems to me that the dialogue stances available to you in the campaign depend on your dialogue choices during the tutorial.

Did anyone else notice that the voice of the main character sounded a lot like Cinema Snob, or is it just me?
  • Victuz
Good review but I'd like to point out just one thing.
The terrorists didn't get their hands on WMD's but on advanced AA rockets. There is kind of a difference when the AA ones destroy an Airbus and when the WMD one destroys entire city :P.
  • momo6  - awardness
I agree that lockpicking is easier on the PC but there hacking is a pain in the ass.
with awardness on master sneaking is much easier because you can see where an enemie is and where he is looking, so you can avoid him or take him out quietly.

Correct. Unfortunately the sneaking mechanic is a bit dodgy if you played other stealth focused games. There is absolutely no indication how good your visibility is and while there are items and perks to reduce enemy sight, you have absolutely no idea how that influences the game. Basically you have to resort to the Shadow Operative ability everytime someone isn't standing alone in a hallway, turned away from you.
  • Setu_Firestorm
I haven't played this game yet. I've had it on pre-order, but have to get my car fixed before I can pick it up.

Honestly, though, I'm more of an RPG fan than a shooter fan, but I agree that your accuracy should not be dependent on a stat IF YOU ARE SETTING YOUR COMBAT SYSTEM TO PLAY LIKE A SHOOTER. If you have the best shooter skills in the world, but low stats, why should you miss your target that you're aiming for? Don't create a shooter system and then make stats take precedence over skill. It's counterproductive to the combat experience.

But anyway, because I'm a big stickler for the Bioware way of RPGs (in that Alpha Protocol adopted the whole Mass Effect conversation system), I'll probably still play this game and possibly enjoy it.

Hell, I loved Dragon Age and the gameplay in that game is hella clunky.

Because your character isn't great at it.
That's really all there's to it.
  • That's a bullshit argument. If you're reticule is right over the enemy's head and you shoot, it shouldn't miss due to the stats. It should depend on the player's level of skill, not the game character's level of skill (aka the stats).
  • tyrong kojy
The game's made by the same guys who did KOTOR 2 and Fallout 1 and 2. Put it simply, it should come as NO surprise that the game feels unpolished and unfinished.

    On the other hand :
When a game is not delayed it often feels rushed and half assed or unfinished. Thanks to the publishers telling the developers that a delay will be unacceptable.
  • Ohsha  - Atleast Fallout New Vegas will kick ass
    It's a damn shame this'll be a rental.

They specifically said in promotional material they didn't want the shooting system to be based on dice rolls in the background. Why'd they lie?

Instead of wasting resources on content no one gives a shit about (like appearance customization) Obsidian should've hired more folks to work on getting the gameplay tight. The way the multiplayer for every FPS in history has worked is you don't need a story if it's fun.

Sega should've given Obsidian more time to develop but -given their track record of buggy games, maybe they needed some executive meddling to tell them to cut content. All those clothes? Could be DLC for whoever gives a shit.

I loved the stories of Planescape:Torment, Fallout 2, and Knights of the Old Republic 2 more than anything Bioware did but Neverwinter Nights 2 was a mediocre tale.

Mass Effect 1 had a bland story and gameplay. I wonder how it'll fall on the balance vs. a game with a better story and worse gameplay.
