I really havent heard that much about this game, but it's kind of a groovy idea

Sounds like an interesting game, though the plot seems strangely reminiscent of the first Silent Hill game.

Cool to hear another opinion on this game. Personally, I was rather interested from the point when I saw light combat in this game. I always like games of this type and I can't see this one disappointing me.

Hmm...Quite interesting. Seems like a strong mix between Max Payne (with it's straight forward story) and Silent Hill 2 (with it's thick tension and rather anxious monsters). Most likely pick this up at some point. Hopefully Max Payne 3 will have this strong of a story.

I beat this game and there's supposed to be free DLC coming near the end of July and another "paid" DLC coming later on.

Personally, I liked this game and is very familiar with Max Payne regarding to the way it conveys the story with the TV shows and radio shows sprinkled throughout the game.

Your so righ about the lip syncing, it totaly killed the mood of every cut-scene, because rather than paying attention to the story, i was just laughing at the crap i was watching on screen, it felt more like i was watching some foreign film not originaly released for an english speaking audience.

I also think you missed one of the larger critisisims of the game, in that its very repetitive. (most games are, but in this one, you really start to feel it straight away, and thats not a good thing).

you fight the same set of bad guys, in wave after progressivly more boring wave. Once you have mastered your dodge ability there is literaly no challenge to these fights at all.

Also the game doesn't inspire horror or fear, as you have unlimited continues. lets say you fail to make it though a wave of bad guys, you will just respawn a short distance before them, with your inventory refilled. if you know you have an unlimited amount of time to get it right then the encounters can never be threatening, because you have nothing to lose.

If anyone out there's like me, who can't pay for games or afford what's new and popular, or you just don't feel like it's worth buying but still want to see the storyline, I highly suggest DarkSydePhil's playthrough on YouTube of the game, which I enjoyed very much.

You can find him on a channel called 'DSPGaming'.

Its good game as could had been expected from the Remedy. Sure its not perfect but what game would be.

You didn't mention this game was in development for the PC originally,Bennett.Shame it was canceled .The gameplay seems to have taken a few notes from Alone in the Dark 4 ..

The metacritic views come across as favourable, however on Amazon.co.uk customers have savaged it.

No no, lipsyncing is bad. That makes it irritating for any nonenglish speaking nation that gets the game dubbed. Lip-flapping is perfectly good.
• dennett316

The thing is though, they were actively trying with the lip syncing as sometimes it does match a little, then the stiff animation ruins it. Some areas look fantastic - light animations, general atmosphere etc, but there are really rough parts that make you question the long development cycle.

Then again, I read the game was at one point going to be sandbox style with you free to roam the town and then that was scrapped, so perhaps that explains the rough edges.

Huh, a game centering around a writer getting away with his female MacGuffin to a small scenic town where he inexplicably gets into a car accident, wakes to find said MacGuffin missing, and is forced to traverse the fog covered landscape while fetching various keys, solving riddles, and battling hellish interpretations of the townsfolk? What an original concept! :woohoo:

 Alright, I realize that Silent Hill borrows a lot from American horror and psychological films and novels and that the developers were probably just using the same source material, but it's hard not to draw parallels between it and Silent Hill 1. Still, from what I've seen of the reviews and trailers so far the game does look genuinely engaging and I'll at least rent it for a weekend or something. However, if the game suddenly throws in ghostly little girls and the birth of some demonic entity then I'm calling shenanigans!

I seriously love this game a lot because it reminds me of John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness, one of my favorite John Carpenter movies. I also love the games that Remedy makes like Max Payne 1 and 2.
• birkling
Their is a good reason for the lip sync being bad. The guy who's movements was Finnish and the voice actor was English. The languages are si diffrent that it is hard to make your mouth move corectly to the sound.
• Cornbredx

Thats a fair statement but I have to assert, from what I could tell watching the making of stuff and all the videos they've released with the LCe and online. everyone there speaks english. It is then a good thing to assume that the motion capture actor speaks english (which I believe the video he spoke but I dont remember now) and would be given the lines to mimic in sync. Being that the sync is so off I actually blame it on the animations. I dont think it had any thing to do with the motion capture, from what I saw they didnt even motion capture lips- but then again, that part I could be wrong on. B)

Good sir, you've convinced me to give this a rent. I'm not too bothered by bad lip syncing (growing up on 80s cartoons will do that). I've been waffling on giving this a try for a while, but for once, you've tipped me to a side.
• SatyrFace
It looks like a really powerful game! Especially against living things.

Ahh... finally it's coming : ) Here in Finland we've been waiting for ages.

It was definitely good as a weekend rental. I beat it in about two nights, I took a bit longer since I was listening to all the TV and radio shows and exploring alot.

I'm baffled by the decision to have downloadable episodes later and not just put these in the game. The lack of replay value also doesn't work in its favor even though it is a really good game.

yeah, the girl in the car was barely syncing up her lines in a stupid :D face, But i've still seen worse.

Well Sage , congrats for the review .
I'm surprised that Alan Wake ended up with a rental score from you .
Since i've heard of it i expected top marks from it .
Guess I was wrong .

I hate it when people compare games, music or movies with other games, music or movies. Just stick with facts. Good review. I don't have a 360 or a PS2 so I won't be able to play this unless it comes to PC.

What's up with games having 8-10 hours of gameplay value these days? For $60!? Fallout 3 was badass because at 100 hours in (first playthrough), I was nowhere near completing it. And randomized games like civilization and the total war series have unlimited gameplay value. If you've barely got one work shift of material in your game.. if I can beat it and still have half my weekend free, you need to come up with more material rather than tweaking your graphics for a full year. Eyecandy is great but I'm not going to stare and marvel at a beautiful waterfall for more than a few seconds when I have people to kill.

I found this game to be extremely cliché and predictable. For me, there were no surprises whatsoever and the gameplay was very stale aswell.

Though the combat sounded original and interesting, I was always skeptical of whether or not the combat would be genuinely good. It is good to hear that I was wrong.

This game is nothing like Silent Hill. The Twin Peaks references are actually more apparent. You only get the silent hill vibe because of the car crash, and the fog. Both have important parts in the story and both are nothing like Silent Hill. If you dont believe me, at least rent it to see for yourself. All the silent Hill references are way off the mark.

This game is more like Twin Peaks meets Max Payne in that it has cinematic dodges and a small town atmosphere. while he [Allan Wake] is no combat professional, he tends to shoot very well depite this (also relevant to the story).

If I say to much, I would spoil a great story. Sage has done an ok job outlining the games goods and bads (which it has a good list of both) and ultimately it will be up to you as a person to decide if you want to play it. Its heavily centered around the story, but dont let this fool you; it is a shooter and it is fun. Those that say its repetitive are not wrong however I did not personally have a problem with this (I only mean to say I was not bogged down by its repetitive combat).

Ultimately if you like a good story, you might like this, if your only interested in the combat look else where. While I love this game, I wouldnt know who to recommend it to as mentioned it has its flaws, but if nothing else its definitely worth the rental.

Again, its nothing like silent hill. If/When you play it that comparison would seem short sighted. B)

This was a great rental as Bennet stated, loved the music/score in this game.

Once I realized the manuscript pages were telling me stuff that would happen I stopped reading them to try to keep a lot of the suspense and excitement going, and it worked, this was one of the more fun games to play in the dark!
