I've been wanting to play this game for a while. I loved BF2 and this game looks really close to bringing out the team warfare fun again. Sorry MW2. You've been replaced.

This game, IMO..is crap..just as the first one was.

You obviously haven't played Bad Company 2, so your oppinion doesn't matter.

i love how you say "it's okay that it supports dedicated servers"(not with those words, i know) like it's just a detail, yet the dedicated servers is what makes this THE FPS to play on pc...
• Sylari
Definitely this a thousand times over.. The lack of dedicated servers is one of the biggest killers for MW2... which is BC2's main competitor.. although I still play both since.... they're pretty damn different in multiplayer.
• Hiro09  - i gotta agree
half the time the squad did something while the other half was just shoving their thumbs up their asses.

I like how you finally used some sound from the actual game in the review. You should do that more often.

After being disappointed by Halo 3 ODST and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 I'm done with military FPS for a while so I won't try this one. Good review tho Sage.

what dont u like about cod and halo
• Dorfus9  - Health replenishment
Can someone PLEASE tell me why the hell almost every new combat-oriented game these days has the "take cover and wait" health replenishment feature? I don't see why it's so popular; it's unrealistic (even more unrealistic than health kits that cure a dozen bullet wounds in a second) and is very obnoxious when deteriorating health puts a bunch of red shit on the screen to obscure your view.

I really don't see what's wrong with actually working to get your health back rather than just waiting for it to fill up.
• dreapster
avatar
Actually, that's an easy one. The take cover method is more realistic on the battlefield. I mean it's highly unlikely you're just run out and shoot everyone dead, and then just stick a med pack on yourself to heal back. So besides being more realistic, it also gets rid of that annoying health bar that remains on the HUD 24/7, and it allows for much smoother gameplay.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather just pause to heal back, then sit behind a wall or something holding cover, knowing I have to mow down ten more foes before I can regain even a single percent of health, so it allows for much more fun combat.

If you're going for straight up reality, go join the army. :D
• dyi
this doesn't make any sense. how is the taking cover method more realistic? when you take cover, the enemy cant see you, but WHY are you able to see the enemy? not only are you able to see the enemy, but u regain health just by standing still? it's more of a handicap to the opponent, and i'd rather play in the Counter Strike style; requires more thinking and that IS the true fps
• Getsuga Tensho
That's a pretty bold statement right there. I don't believe you can call any fps "the true fps". The all vary so much and have something different to offer.

Counter Strike is a hardcore game in it's own right and is the main scene for competitive play but it lacks features which many others have.

Halo, Battlefield, Team Fortress 2 and many others do so many things which make them stand out and great in their own right but that doesn't make them the true fps.

In regards to healing, I think the cover system is more realistic. When in cover you are avoiding taking damage, it gives you a moment to recover and could even be used to patch yourself up quickly. Health packs just instantly give you more health which means you can just run out into a battlefield, guns blazing, take lots of fire and survive because there is a health pack near you. I don't know about you but if I was in a fight I don't think I'd by surviving long by running out in the open and touching a pack to try and heal.

Doesn't Battlefield have health packs as well though with medics and if I remember correctly you can inject yourself to heal? This game pretty much incorporates both healing systems at the same time. Even more realistic. You take cover to recover slightly then heal with something to regain health.

You've got to give this game points for that.

The game is worth buying because of its online.
• thepirategeek
ODST was a joke.
MW2 has turned seriously cheap, unbalanced, and lame (How it's still in MLG is beyond me).
BC2 is epic. Awesome. The online is deep and full of stragety given the right team.
To FullmetalNinja25, give this one a shot, you won't regret it.
The single player is meh but hey, it's not the true reason to get this game.
You don't play this like MW2, it's a team based game and sadly, people online play it like MW2. Too many people want to be snipers when you need to be offensive. MORE TALKING. So many people online (360 mind you) need to talk more. Get a mic or something damn it.
360/PS3 need System Link-up for this to be perfect as we console people don't get Dedicated servers ala PC.
It's nice to know DICE is still supporting PC by providing dedicated servers (unlike say...MW2 and Starcraft 2 with it's no LAN).
Local play at some level allows the game to survive long after the company ditches it and move on.
Any 360 players: GT is the same as name (thepirategeek). Hit me up! Play mostly BC2 and SF4 atm

The online multiplayer is fantastic, bringing back the class based gameplay of old with some welcom modern improvements. The campane is no ware near as good as the first, since th second vertually ignores the ending of the first game.

Battlefiled: Bad Company had a great Kelly's Hero's like story that respectfully poked fun at warfare (I thought at least). It's sequal ignores the first and instead trys to parody Call of Duty's latest installment.

WHY! The first game had grat characters and atmosphere, why change it all so drastically for the next game? I hope they drastically step it up for the inevitable B:BC3 and change it back to the stlye of the first.
• Chunkie Homie
I played through this game, and then played the first's demo and thought it was more interesting than the entire second game. Trucks with radio stations??? BC2 is all about parodying MW2, which makes it worse.

It seemed that you saw Bad Company 2 as avarage game instead of that ass kicking game unlike Joe.

• SpiderSlayr
I'm loving Bad Company 2 and I haven't even played the original. I think it has a better campaign than Modern Warfare 2 and an awesome multiplayer experience that rates with the best. A must-buy FPS, in my opinion.
• McBeaver
Hmm, I think I enjoyed MW2 campaign just a little more. However, tip of the hat to BC2 for a really great sense of humor. I enjoyed the unit banter and subtle roast of MW2 within the dialogue. Like the "favorite predator scene" dialogue, or the units take on heartbeat sensors.
A cool mechanic is how you have to find ways to evade the cold weather whilst trying to find your squad.
Still, though, the situations you found yourself in with MW2 were more intense IMO. Without the sense of humor BC2 would have been terribly forgettable for me.

• Sturmrabe
Sounds to me the main complaint was the derivativeness of play... but its a FPS, ALL of them are derivative.

Destruction and vehicles are factors in the play that make it far less derivative than other FPS's on the market today.

• Greyjeth
No offense meant but i think your review was off in a few ways. For one thing the multiplayer is far more better than any other multiplayer ive ever played. And secondly the character models dont look blocky to me at all. However other than that your review is good :)
Battlefiled: Bad Company had a great Kelly's Hero's like story that respectfully poked fun at warfare (I thought at least). It's sequal ignores the first and instead trys to parody Call of Duty's latest installment.
That' s the thing though: MW2 became an instant pop culture phenomenon overnight that it probably overturned whatever Kelly's Heroes/Three Kings inspirations. Still, DICE should have at least just gave us some info about what happened; just a simple explanation (that doesn't even have to be in the game) would suffice.
WHY! The first game had grat characters and atmosphere, why change it all so drastically for the next game? I hope they drastically step it up for the inevitable B:BC3 and change it back to the stlye of the first.
That's also the thing though: it never really left in most of those serious bits, generally more subtle. It never really took itself seriously even when it did. This helps a lot given it's comedic roots. Perhaps the whole serious look and sound and feel (like the art or voice chatter in the menus and in game) just something military people can relate to versus the glorified, over-the-top slash taken-very-seriously approach COD has always done (which I'm not saying is a bad thing).

Another thing to point, for Sage anyways, is if you had total customizable kits or actually give the player WAY more freedom on what to do, wouldn't you just remove whatever identity you have in both your series and the genre in general? I mean, this is the Battlefield: the arcade simulation of combating in an army.
• Echelon730  - Sorry to disagree
I am going to disagree on the multiplayer. It is excellent, and for those of us who have grown tired of the twitch gameplay and solo xp oriented pacing of MW2, this is a tactical and team game that fills a lot of wholes. The Game used the destruction in such a way that it makes the multiplayer feel like it is more about battlefield awareness and team work that gun mastery.

If you enjoy team work and the sense of accomplishment that comes with that this game is a must buy.

• Bustosmate  - Agree and Disagree
I agree with Sage 100% on the fact that it is a great weekend rental. The only competitive advantage BC2 has to offer is the fantastic destructable environment but apart from that I don't find that it has good repeat value single player wise. Multiplayer wise, its great but still deosn't appeal to me to play instead of MW2. Great reveiw 10/10

Strange, the things he said about it you can apply to almost any game. I've rented it already so I'll probably just get my own opinion on the matter. When the servers are not dead of course. (dumb over population D:

Okay, okay. Bad Company is NOT a prequel to Bad Company 2.

A prequel, a merger between pre- and sequel, is something that comes chronologically before the events in a previous creation, but is made after it.

Bad Company was not made after Bad Company 2. It is thus a predecessor.
• MrRightclick
Apathetic One, I would really like to hear some reasons for the game's suckage

I, for one, really like this game. Apart from the problems with the server and Punkbuster connection errors (playing on PC), which sadly are MANY, the game is very enjoyable. ;)

In a nutshell:

The pros:
 Multiplayer squads, when you're not playing with the "MW2-rush style" players, the squad system is marvellous.
 The sounds of battle really make it feel like you're on a.. ahem.. "real battlefield". DICE has really succeeded in creating a perfect feel of war here
 Vehicles, really add to the game, they're powerful yet still easily destroyed with good tactiques
 Classes, they're nicely balanced, and I've yet to see any of the classes really have an unfair advantage over the others. And they're very versatile, too. Choosing Recon doesn't mean that you have to snipe all the time.
 The most important one: The feeling of war. MW2 missed this one, damn Arcade shooter. There's nothing like setting up an ambush with a squad of good players, then hitting the enemy hard where it hurts. Sniping from the rooftops.. And so on. :side:

The cons:
:!: Connection errors.. Hopefully we will get rid of these soon. The launch really sucked, since the servers were down for a good long time.
:!: A rather dull singleplayer campaign. I really bought the game just for the multiplayer. I never finished the SP campaign, neither in MW2 nor BC2.
:!: No prone position? This one was a shock.
:!: My computer seems to have some problems running the game. Seems that an update will be neccessary in a while :S (Flickering textures, mostly, and some FPS lag. Yeah this is the problem with PC when compared to consoles.)
:!: Knife.. It will take some time to get used to BC2 knife over the MW2 one. Even a small lag really makes it harder to hit with the knife.

Not much else comes into mind with such a short notice. If you can live with a few minor issues before they're patched up, you should definitely try this out. MW2 fans, beware, it's not quite MW2, but similarities are to be found. ;)
• The Ronald
punk buster forgot about that I got a ps3 now
• Chunkie Homie
No prone was done on purpose to make it harder to hardcore camp.
• firefang9212
Ive played the multiplayer demo for this and still do till i get the game but even the demo is fun, fully destrouctable and even tho you can only play on one multiplayer map it uses the normal multiplayer sever instead of a seperate demo sever so theres allways hundreds of people online.[/ color][/ size]

Another solid review as always Sage. However, it's just another generic war shooter to me. I love the "as long as you are playing with the right players the game is a blast" argument. I.E. as long as it's not MW2 fanatics. However, I bet if you approached the MW2 multiplayer with those same players that you claim are so great to game with you would have just as much fun. It seems like everybody is judging MW2 on their time playing with 10 year old noobs and then judging their BC2 time based on gaming with experience fellow friends. The only thing that is really stand outish in here is the destructible environments. I had more fun with it in Red Faction, but whatever. I could care less about the vehicles. The time I spent playing this game either the idiots on the team would take the vehicles and drive them around like maniacs or the game would turn into "spend the first 20 min. destroying the vehicles so we can have an actual gun fight" game play. This game isn't all that special.

Bad Company 2 does not replace MW2... BC2 is a good game and a fun game to play in the single player campaign but especially in multiplayer...but is not a game that gives me a full satisfaction like MW2 did...they both had short single player but the gameplay in MW2 is more fluid than BC2....I love destroying buildings and control tanks but over all MW2 takes the cake its in is full a more satisfying game to play and to spend hours apon hours additively :)
• McBeaver
I agree with most of your review, although I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

First of all, I thought your commentary on AI was accurate, but not emphasized as it should be. I found my company to be 100% useless. Enemies give you priority and allies may have taken out a total of 10 enemies throughout the campaign. The enemy AI is pretty bad. They will run haphazardly into the open, and maybe find some cover and sit there. The only strategically sound tactic they utilize is destroying cover you're behind.

Second, I completely disagree that your multi-player arsenal lacks variety. Motion sensors, tank mines, grenade launcher, defibrillators, red dot, 12x zoom scope, spotting scope, marksman training, ceramic armor, smoke grenade launcher, 12-gauge rounds, magnum rounds, vehicles and alternate fire, stationary MG and AT, the list goes on. If we are comparing BC2 to others in the genre it has as much if not more variety.
• dsprox  - DICE and EA suck hard
BF2 is a terrible game on the pc, yet I still play it. The console versions are good because the guns shoot straight, but not the PC version of BF2. It's good to know that the console versions of BC2 has guns that shoot straight, though I'm sure the pc version is still crap like bf2.
• MSH-Hitman
avatar
That's cause the guns have more realistic recoil and spray in the PC version. They dumbed down the gun play on the console versions by alot. While they aren't perfect in the PC version, it's far better than what they did with the console where you can basically just spray constantly and make every shot hit. It's just as bad as MAG lol

You were reviewing Bad Company 2 right? As it sounded like you could be reviewing any game and just add "bad company 2" in places.

There were vehicles in the original MP mode. mostly tanks, helicopters and jeeps.

As for the computer team-mate AI, it depends on the difficulty you play it on (as it says on the title screen) the harder you play it as, the less they'll do in certain situations.
• MSH-Hitman
avatar
I'm actually surprised by your review, calling the singleplayer basically good and the multiplayer lukewarm. I thought it was pretty obvious that though the story was solid (I liked the introductory level), singleplayer was a very quick and sadly disappointing experience. The interaction between the squad is just as good as before, but the ending felt thrown in though the levels varied terrain, it was all rather linear.

Also the multiplayer is far better than you say. Destruction and the spread out maps make for intense and exciting games, especially with things such as Rush. Instead of being stuck to one part of the map, you beat that part of the map and then it moves onto a whole new and fresh area to keep it going. Like if Domination in Modern Warfare 2 suddenly opened up a whole new area of the map for you to push into.

While the stuff multiplayer does could be considered standard fare for games, it's been really refined and makes it a much better game than Modern Warfare 2, which is more building up to killstreaks instead of just using what you actually earn such as multitude of weapons and vehicle options that you can change on the fly to help benefit the situation.
