Nice review of the game Sage. Was gonna pick it up but I might spend my money on other games instead.

This game is really good, I recommend it to anyone who hasn't played a GOW game or someone who can not wait for GOW3!

I don't mind it looking so much like God of War, since I adore the franchise and its gameplay. It may sound shallow, but having it resemble Go3 in attack design and such actually makes me want it all the more.

I also read all three works of Dante, and from what I've seen so far, it beautifully done (if having taken some creative leeway). I'm not just renting this game, but buying it. It may be a tad tried in some areas, but the sheer scale of Hell and haunting feeling you have after you put the controller down make it worth it.

Well I'll say this about what I've seen of the game, they don't hold back on making it feel like you're in hell.

I always wonder why none of these reviewers actually go to the trouble of actually READING the poem before calling the story "unoriginal" although it's not the parody of the political parties of the 12th century as it was it did like it was supposed to but it did have a kind of original way of portraying it. Not to say it was good, but it's probably one of the few times that you can have a save the princess type situation plus it's got a better plot than a lot of other games that are out there. Ok I think that I'm being generous there, but at least you acknowledged that the story was actually a part of the game. Kudos on that! I actually met a guy who thought the game was based on Dante's Peak, he was immediately slapped.

Let us pray that someday there is a game that faithfully follows the "Divine Comedy" and it better not be a hack/slash, although I can't think of an apropiate style of game that would suit this story. Thelevel design is marvelous, I would like to think that if the game is ever created, it depicts hell as this one has.
• Oeruli
You just made my own point by contradicting your own. How can you make a game that is completely faithful to the divine comedy, and then still have it be fun? It'd probably be ok as a point and click or something, but I mean... that would be kinda boring! Might as well go on the Dante's Inferno website and do the Explore Hell stuff.

I'm pissed off. What does this have to do with the actual Dante'sInferno? Dante's original poem had nothing to do with this crap. If they wanted to make a video game based on Hell, fine, cool, whatever. Hell is a great starting point. Great graphics, gameplay, whatever. But this is like making a video game with a 38DD-chested nun wielding a grenade launcher and killing zombie fornicators and calling it 'Shakespeare's Measure for Measure'.

I know, I'm being picky, but if the developers actually read the fucking comedies and picked up on what was going on in Dante's actual world (the Florentine civil unrest, his exile, and the universal tragedy of the human condition), PLUS his vivid depiction of Hell, that would be a compelling and terrifying game. Instead, the story is written around bland characters who say bland things and have bland voice acting, while the game itself just rips off God of War.

Dante deserved better. Save great literature. Read a book.
• Shihan42
While I partially agree with you, I wouldn't be quite so harsh. I've read the Divine Comedy and while the game takes some MAJOR liberties with the story, that was inevitable. The actual poem doesn't really lend itself to a good video game, and I think they put in a good effort. This was a lose\lose situation anyway. Make the game just like the poem, and it's boring to play; take the path the developers did, and you piss off the actual fans of the story. I do have to say however, that making a game based off such a classic took major balls.

I agree. It looks cool and all, and obviously INSPIRED by the book, but it shouldn't be called "Dante's Inferno" with all that was changed.

I actually had the idea to adapt the story somewhat more accurately--I would have kept the enemies being the way they were described in the story. The only thing I would have changed was to have a different main character who is taken on a tour of Hell the same way Dante was, rather than use Dante's name on a character that is clearly nothing like Dante, and I would have just called the game "Inferno".

I was really hoping that Beatrice wouldn't have been Dante's wife, and I still hope that key figures in Italian history (especially Pope Boniface) show up, but at least Hell looks beautiful by itself.

I hope beyond hope that the final boss really is Satan, and that he really is as huge as the epic poem describes, complete with his three mouths.

For average God of War clone this game got huge hype and even Super Bowl commersial spot (those are not cheap) so clearly EA thought that those are more important than actual game. Of course average dosen't mean that it would be bad game but its not just worth all that hype either. I take Kratos over Dante every day.

I have to say that this game is enjoyable. The whole "god of war ripoff" stance most people have is a bit over played. God of war set a new standard in this genre and being that there really is only a hand full trying to be as great as God Of War, Dante's inferno has done a nice job. My beef with the game is that i have no sympathy for the character Dante. His wanting to be redeemed for things he knowingly did just does not make him a likeable character. If he succeeds, great if not, i could care less.

I have already rented and finished this game so i am not in a big hurry to make it part of my game collection but at some point i will but it. It was a nice distraction to tide me over until God Of War 3 comes out.

Now, if this game was set before God of War, you would more then likely have nothing to compare with this in your one sided review of a good game. Adding pieces here and there on the side still doesn't add much informative information we can use on deciding to get the game or not. I would have to say to try it and if you like it, then keep it and play it again and again.

Pro-tip: addressing both good and bad points about the game does not make his review one-sided. Stop hearing only what you want to hear.
• MerlintheSage
Okay the whole stance of God of War ripoff is even more overplayed when God of War itself is not a original Idea even in the slightest. Yes it set a bar in doing it well. But it isn't a original, do people not remember the reviews of the original God of War when people were complaining about it being not original. Yes this game isn't as epic as God of War. But it is still fun. Is every hack and slash going to be called a God of War rip off? If you want mind numbing button smashing go play Dynasty Warrior, but this game gives you some fun story and change of pace in combat with impressive backgrounds can it get some credit.

okay rant over. Bennett great review like almost always.
• Niisanchan
This is what get's me in these reviews about Dante's Inferno: why complain about the fact that its gameplay is so similar to GoW? If you're going to complain about that, then you should add it as a minus to every FPS (war game) too. They're all the same game if you look at the gameplay, over and over and over again!

The environments may be impressive, but saying that they are faithful to the poem is quite a stretch.

To the two guys I quoted and to everyone else:

RPG, Adventure, FPS, Third Person Shooter, Top Down Shooter, Railshooter, Puzzle, Trivia, Platformer, Action.... There's a lot of choices.

Dante's Inferno could have been taken as an Action Adventure Platformer a la Shadow of the Colossus or more Action Adventure RPG a la Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls, mind you, feels like it would have made for a better gameplay system and, unlike the current depiction of Dante's Inferno in a videogame format, could have been far more thematic, without requiring to the tried and true cliche of the "Save your girlfriend/princess".

Additionally, the "Main hero seeks redemption" is no longer all that moving for anyone who has played a large amount of videogames of highly varying quality. It's like the japanese MOE, it's a character trait everyone is accustomed to and will eventually link back to the first character who they fanboyed/girled over who had that same character trait. There are many different ways of answering any troubles as per motivations or any other reasons why the person is moving forth.

Presentation can be dealt with in a grand variety of manner and this game could have easily been something as simple as an adventure platformer in a mario galaxy-esque style or a zelda twilight princess genre and would have been equally fun, incredible and lend itself the ability to showcase hell in various ways as well as move forward.

Now, as for the actual story being given, there are various ways to have the story be given while also having challenging gameplay, the sensation of dread and also the whole movement through hell. Goodness gracious, they're avoiding the one genre that could have solved their problems easily.

Horror adventure action game.

Placing far more of an accent on the hopelessness of being able to escape hell alive and playing far more on the horrors. Putting on the subtle card along with the blunt card. Paired with the ambiance they provide as well as with Vergil who is the only one who could lead him out (By having Vergil face the courage to plunge deeper into Hell for whatever reason it may be, of which they could have chosen that he was a person whose fate could allow him to save the earth from casting itself to hell in which they would provide him with the appropriate knowledge needed to become an earthly messiah... I dno)

There are so many genres out there, so many different manners of showcasing hell in different genre of gameplay...

It's simple, they made a mistake, and down the line, they simply couldn't fix it. Stick with your guns, the show must go on. Someone will buy it, people will hate it, but it will sell... And that's all they'll ultimately care about. They're too unknown a company (Visceral) in too dangerous a corporation (EA Games) to be able to risk using creative thinking and originality in tel...

That and... They really cheapened out somewhere down the line...

"Our hero has a grueling past! He needs to absolve for his sin! It'll be great, you'll be redeeming a hero!"

Going for the underdog sensation. Cliche's are starting to show

"Our hero is in a love triangle with Satan himself!"

Going for the love triangle/Princess got kidnapped. Signs of desperation are showing...

"We depict hell in many ways, and we're not afraid of censorship!"

Is that why you guys keep on trying to shove titties in our faces at every chance you get... Oh look, gore and titties, that's what gamers like, right? Another sign of desperation. When they overfeed you with nudity (And I'm a pervert with a great love for breasts, but even I found that they were just ridiculously showing too much tits in what should have been a far more serious game)

"We believe we made a great game and that we were incredibly faithful to the story, despite what everyone says"

Denial, Denial, Denial.

Might be worth a rent, Don't bother buying brand new. If you want to own it, wait till it's used...

Be aware that the real Dante's Inferno IS about a hero redeeming himself, and it IS incredibly gory. Furthermore, it IS new and original. Maybe not to the game world, but the story was written centuries ago. Just because you haven't looked into it until now doesn't mean that the story was actually written in its entirety this February.

i find it weird that these kinds of games are referenced to GoW when really they should be referencing Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, since it came out first and had the midair compat, hug bosses, puzzles. Only thing GoW added was the fixed camera.

Except Ninja Gaiden played out more with a Devil May Cry and Prince of Persia flare than GOW did.

I bought a PS3 a couple of weeks ago and got this as a special offer and boy am I glad for that.

A lot of the negative aspects that Sage mentioned are probably true but they didnt bother me at all. I have never played GOW so the intense action didnt feel copied or boring at all. I also feel that the classic "save the princess" plot was also a good choice because it came pretty close to plot of the source material (go through hell to get to beatrice), they just changed it enough to fit the hack&slash genre.

What really impressed me though was the incredible setting. Now when I think of hell, I think of what I saw in this game. It was creepy, it was gruesome and it had tons of well-designed enemies to hack into pieces. Getting the choice of absolving poor defenceless souls or damning them to an eternity of suffering is also fun.

All in all this was a great game, they went as close to the original story as possible without making it boring to play (lets face it, simply going through a sightseeing tour through hell isnt very exciting gameplay). I cant wait for the downloadable content to come out. If its anything like what i have heard it will definetaly ad the much needed replay-value.

Uncharted 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, and now Dante's Inferno. The list of current generation games that are derivative of last gen games grows.

What were Uncharted 2 and Darksiders deriving from? I know Dante's Inferno is a God of War replica, and Bayonetta is just insultingly bad with it's constant lack of originality and it's obsession with ripping off of Devil May Cry in every possible way. But I never played Darksiders or the Uncharted games, so I don't know what those would be ripping off of.
• ayezersky
 I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, but wasn't God Of War a rip off of Devil May Cry. The only difference being the button sequenced finishers, that is a rip off of so many other games. :?:
