I love the whole concept of being able to play as a horseman of the apocalypse. This may not be the most outstanding game out there, but as a hack and slash fan who enjoys the general mythology, it looks like my kind of thing!

I like your style of reviews more than the usual stuff; you're very objective and precise with your words. Thanks.

I watched the review on Blip a little while ago, and I've gotta say, Sage, as often as I tend to agree with you, I'm totally opposite on this one. I loved the game, and I didn't think it was that much like the usual action games. I mean, the combat was, sure, but the adventure elements were fantastic. I just beat the game this morning, and I've gotta say it's easily one of my favorite 360 games in a long ass time.

You know, I've seen all of the reviews of this game online, and they all say the same stuff.. but this is the only game I've seen in ages where watching the reviews makes me want to play it.

Despite the panning it seems to be reviewing by critics, I want to play this game, and when I get my new 360 (damn OTE), this is one I'll be picking up, despite all of the hard knocks it's recieving... it looks like this game is just going for something different, despite it being derivative. It's a game you have to play for the Setting, and we need to support games like that. Brutal Legend and this both seem to be selling their setting, and I for one applaud.

Defeating the boss of each world with the specific weapon you gain in their level... wow, never thought a game would rip off both God of War and Legend of Zelda.

This seems like a pretty generic epic action game that I might consider renting, but not buying. Though having Mark Hamill voice another dark psychopath does elevate it quite a bit.

Please go finish my immortal. It's just not as funny without someone reading it.

Sounds very Legend-of-Zeldaesque. So I think I would enjoy this game

In my eyes Darksiders is nothing special. Its just standard action game with plenty of hack and slash. Sure premise is intresting but it takes more than that to make great game.

  • TheRoboNinja  - what?

I have to say I hated this review, i BOUGHT the game and i couldn't have asked for a better game(in my opinion) I thaught it was exciting and compelling.
  • Apathetic One  - HEY!
It's ok...he offers an opinion and it's not the end of the world if you disagree with him. Play the game and enjoy it...

  • Apathetic One  - Well..
It looks like a weekend rental, which is kool and like The Sage said, appealing to someone SICK of fucking FPS (me).

I always enjoy The Sage's reviews....

"Forgettable but harmless." I knew I didn't want to play this game, and now I have at least one review backing that up.

What really differentiates this game from God of War and/or Devil May Cry? Those two series were helped by being the first to do what they did. This game and Bayonetta are truly just rehashes of the former two series, bringing very little new or, and most importantly, exciting to the table.

Can't we come up with new kinds of 3D action games instead of poorly recycling the 3D action games of last generation? We have HD capabilities, doesn't that account for something?

    (Hint: No.)

Nothing against the game itself, but Sage, man.. you know why people like Angry Joe and Zero Punctuation and even X-Play? Because the reviews are lively. This review, or rather, your reading of the review, sounded just as dull and tried as the game itself. At least some amount of energy as you read would be a great improvement.

It's meant to be more informative than entertaining, think of it as a gaming website, written, review being read out loud rather than a performance related to the game.

When I'm on the fence about a game I would rather hear everything about it, flaws and strengths, then wait through each joke or skit that the reviewer does before telling more about the game. When I've already decided what I'm going to do with a game is when I like to see the entertaining reviews that either bash or praise parts of the game I like or dislike.

Though I can't say I would recommend this as a buy, simply for the fact that you can beat the game in 15 to 20 hours depending on the difficulty, and that it doesn't have alot of replayability or any online modes, I will say that it is a HIGH MUST RENT.

Also you watch the footage and then hear Bennett talk about it and he makes it seem rather dull, when the game keeps you involved, combat and story wise. I played it in two days and only wanted more. Yes the combat is familiar to God of War and the overworld/boss dungeons are similar to Zelda, but they work so well, it's easy to look past them and enjoy the game for what it is. And you do some repetitive runs back through the world at a few points, but it's all quicker the second time through when you get the teleport pads and a horse.

Definitely go play this game if you like action games at all. You won't be disappointed.

I don't really agree - I am having a blast with this game. The combat is kind of stupid, but the Zelda-influenced puzzlesolving is really good.
To me this feel like a Zelda game mixed with God of War.
I really like it. There is no replayability whatsoever, so I will still recommend renting it.
If you are waiting for the next Zelda, this might quench the thirst for a while.
  • Kurvos
I am very, very sceptical this satisfies anyone waiting for the next Zelda game. It's not the same without any single element from Zelda. It's like saying "If you are waiting for the next Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry 4 might quench the thirst for a while". I mean, it makes no sense.
  • SpecterM91

It's a good thing there are plenty of Zelda elements, then. I mean, the dungeons, the horse back combat, the items, the puzzles... More or less everything outside of combat is EXTREMELY similar to the Zelda formula.
  • MSH-Hitman

Zelda is a very particular style of action game and this is honestly the closest game I've played to the same formula that wasn't just Zelda. I'm a big Zelda fan, mostly just the console stuff since the handheld games are getting kind of sad, and this was a big thrill for me since I've been waiting for a Zelda game or something similar for awhile now since Twilight Princess.
  • m60berserker

    Have you played the game?
It feels SO much like Zelda. I can honestly not think of a single gameplay mechanic from Zelda, that is not somewhere in this game.
  • Kurvos  - What the..?
The design is not just inspired by - but it's a pure rip-off of Warcraft. That's cheap.
  • MSH-Hitman
    avatar
Except it isn't? Sure I guess similarities could be made between the Merchant of Darksiders and Kel'Thuzad, but things like the Angels, demons, and monsters are pretty original. Hell if any thing, Samael the demon looks abit like Tim Curry from Legend lol
  • Wulfenlord
So you play as War, the 'foot'man of Apocalypse? I want mah Deathpony now!
  • MSH-Hitman

I'm not that impressed with what Darksiders has to offer. I would rather play Bayonetta.

Or if they made a game based around My little Apocalypse Ponies ( a robotbot chicken idea).
  • firudesu  - ERRR
Normally I like your reviews sage but this one just seemed way off. You talk about the game being like god of war or devil may cry. I would have to disagree yes they have combat and there's probably a lot of it. This game is clearly more like Zelda.
The comment you make about using whatever item you picked up to kill the boss as flawed gimic. Thats every boss in Zelda and no one complains about that. Also you moan about exploring, again there's lots of exploring in Zelda. I think you went into this game expecting it to be a God of War or DMC and its not the game has more with Zelda then DMC or God of war. The only thing it shares with them is the combat, the dungeons overworld puzzles and you even get a horse. Its more like zelda. Im sorry Sage but I just didn't like this review it just seems you missed the whole point.
  • EvilAshTwin
Why is it that all the game reviewers are tearing into this game for borrowing gameplay elements from other games? While turning around and praising Bayonetta for its fresh and fun combat? I may not have played DMC, but Ive watched enough gameplay footage of it to know that Bayonetta ripped more from DMC than Darksiders did.

By the point in the gaming universe, you'd be hard pressed to find a game that didnt borrow elements from other games. The games that do try to stand out as different and innovative tend to get beaten down by terrible reviews. One such game was TooHuman, it tried to do something completely different with the Hack n Slash genre, and it was torn apart in the reviews simply because it was different.

Sage, I understand this is all based on your own personal opinion. But c'mon, if youre not going to atleast hold Bayonetta up to the same scrutiny you held Darksiders up to, then maybe its time you took a step back from reviewing to get in touch with your inner gamer again.

Whatever God of War makes a good game , Darksiders can do better.

Darksiders=God of War Reloaded for 360

Since GOW3 isnt out yet this game could take over that...

i am interested in Darksiders Characters i like my heros wearing a robe and looking emo :D

To people who think its a rip-off...
its not like its totally ripping off the story of any game...

If its the the controls for a game you should be happy then Nagging about how "Its BAD!"

you might as well say every JRPG game ripped of FF...or the other...way round...

but anyway im gonna try to save up some cash for that game... ;)

Its a 99% Zelda ripoff in a fantastic setting using God of War combat and Warcraftesque styleguide. This review was worse than the game thats for sure.
It reminds me of Batman Arkham Asylum as in being a really good core game with an original story only with underdeveloped combat.

This is a much more original game than Bayonetta with 15-25 hours of gameplay. Why on earth would you want to skip out on this purchase (renting a 15 hour campaign seems ridiculous aswell, buy it, complete it and then trade it in for storecredits instead).
