01.11.2010 - 07:09 | Richard WeskerI tried to tell my buddy at work about this game, but he just kept going on and on about Darksiders, which is apparently awesome if the reviews are anything to go by. I'll have to check that out along with Bayonetta, but Bayonetta comes first. I've been chomping at the bit to play this for awhile now. Great review, Sage!

PS3 version ain't that bad. Aside from menu loadtimes it's just like what I see on your vid.
BTW, the Hard mode is challenging, but not overly hard and the Very Hard (in Bayonetta titled Infinite Climax mode) is simply Hard mode without Witch time.
And it's actually easier than DMC, cause anytime you die, you don't have to restart the mission, but start off at a checkpoint.
And I SO KNEW you'd choose Joy's Torture Attack for demonstration. You're getting predictable, Bennett.

a vid is locked at 30 fps...60fps is twice as fluid...and it's established the PS3 version barely reaches 30 FPS + suffers from lower texture quality... (the vid is 640*480, the game runs at 1024*720, so you won't tell on this little vid) so yeah the XBOX 360 is far superior, many magazines rated it above the PS3 versions, because the difference was too bad...

It looks like an awesome cross between Devil May Cry and Veiwtiful Joe, because Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Bayonetta, also created the original Devil May Cry, Veitiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand. I bought this game the day after it came out and I love it so fricken much. It has awesome Clover Leaf Studio references and also Sega Genesis references. Platinum Games is actually the new name of Clover Leaf Studios.

01.11.2010 - 10:01 | FelcisWow, the OST really is polarizing...I saw another review a few days ago which called the music "the best part of the game" even before the battle-system (and he also loved the game as a whole). I rather like it too, but I can see that it´s not for everybody. But no one can deny that it fits the game perfectly.
Anyway, great review Sage. I really like the way you talk, in contrast to all those "woah, awesome dude"-style reviewers out there.

Thanks for the reply Benzaie, but really.
so yeah the XBOX 360 is far superior, many magazines rated it above the PS3

Ironically it sold better on the PS3. ("PS3 version sold 135,242 copies and was the top-selling game during its week of release there, while the 360 version sold 64,325 copies and charted at number seven," from duh... wikipedia)
I beat my PS3 version and yeah the menu load-times and occasional hiccups in the cutscenes were present.
I played the 360 version at an event in a store and really found no difference beyond that.
So PS3 owners really shouldn't get discouraged and buy this great game. Trust me, it's well worth it.

great review I agree with most of your points but I don't understand this whole ps3 version bashing it plays and looks fine and I don't feel or see any frame rate slow down at all but whatever not a big deal. Also I don't know if you knew this, you probably do but you can have a custom sound track if you don't like the in-game music, I like to put the boss battle music from different games while playing. anyways great review.

How does one do that?
Also the BAD moments of Bayonetta, which still don't ruin a great game.
1. QTE. You die and it's mission over, no "health-damage-and- retry". I remember when you first fight Fortitudo (it the Church) I had Platinum on all fights and suddenly QTE in a cutscene... I'm like WTF. And it immediately fucks you your overall rating. Also notorious in the last Jeanne fight.
2. Verses 1 and 2 in Chapter XIV. Just no. I hate that particular genre and having out of nowhere was... bad.
But that's more IMHO.

From what I can tell the game is supposed to be hammy and campy, and I LOVE that aspect of it. It lampoons so many Japanese and American tropes alike. I didn't find the voice acting that bad and I've had the game's rendition of "Fly Me to the Moon" stuck in my head for days.
But it's true, no matter what you think about the rest of the game no one can deny that the action is the best and most fluid there has ever been in the game. I haven't unlocked Hard mode yet but I've expected it to be brutal, because it seems to me you CAN'T button mash with this battle system, it's all about timing and if you manage to master it you could get through every battle without getting hit.

01.11.2010 - 13:19 | vid3oman64I watched my friend play the demo for Bayonetta and... it seemed like it was just Devil May Cry, and that's it. It's Nekkie Witch Librarian With Giant Tits May Cry. It seemed to bring nothing new to the mechanics of the 3D beat-em-up, as my friend performed Stinger, Thousand Stab, the... sword throwing boomerang style move, I forget the name, standing in one place shooting her guns in different directions (and same with her shoes)... I understand it's made by the same guy, but this game is virtually identical, at least, from what I can take from the demo.
-
Bayonetta, a button-mashing sexistic game = good
But left 4 dead 2 = bad? (Then again, you didn't play left 4 dead 2 or 1, seeing how you said that left 4 dead 2 had no story in it, but left 4 dead did. That made me lol.)
Sage, Sage, Sage. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

01.11.2010 - 14:07 | OneFreeManWhile the action is worthy of praise, there are some nagging problems that soiled the game for me. The characters were pretty shallow and the story was not really worth mentioning. And as Bennett pointed out, this drags the game because it shoves down your throat a good amount of story and dialogue cut-scenes which are tedious. While the action cut-scenes are really beautiful to look at and easy to enjoy, the dialogue cut-scenes are usually made in this cheep filmstrip with still images. The second problem with cut-scenes is that sometimes the game will expect from you, out of the blue, to push a (usually only one) button in an action scene in quick time event. This is quite unexpected since it's not a constant implementation in the game and you can die just because of one f-ing button. Other than shitting on your score, I can't find any other reason for implementing this in the game. Bayonetta does much crazier things in cut-scenes without your input, so what's the freaking point of that?
I must also say that the sections when you ride a motorcycle and on a rocket were dragged out for waaay to long. They weren't really that much fun to play either.
As it was pointed out before, I would suggest playing Bayonetta on Xbox360. I have played both versions and it plays much smoother on Xbox. Although, you'll see some hiccups in frame-rates on Xbox too, but not as much as in PS3 version.
The PS3 version is exactly the same, so don't worry about choosing which system to get it on.
From what i played of the ps3 version, There were some quite noticeable frame rate issues. Even the games standard frame rate seemed to be about 5 or 10 FPS lower than the 360's, as well as the game actually playing a tad slower. So...i tend to disagree on that Opera Guy

01.11.2010 - 17:47 | YukiruIt looks so damn confusing. :-(
I don´t know, I just don´t like such 360 games like Bayonetta or even Prototype. Give me a good PC, a couple of Ego-Shooter, WC3 or Prince of Persia (SoT,WW,TTT) and I feel fine.

01.11.2010 - 17:58 | MagglesGah, I wish I could play this right now, but of course, money is my problem. Oh well, maybe someday. I found the raping horse thingy combo funny as hell.
Great review Bennett. :)
