Ha! I see Sean there.

General consensus is that the game isn't worth 60 bucks.

...I still don't own Halo 3. I should... probably get it eventually.
• dsprox  - No you shouldn't
If you already have halo 1 or 2, you don't need three. There's really no need to buy the same game over and over just slightly different every time.
• RPGaholic
Wow, thanks for the review, Bennett.
• vid3oman64
Nice review. Nice video, well written, well executed.

Gotta say, ODST, outside of the insane commercial, is turning out to be disappointing.

Yeah, this is the one game that made me regret selling my 360, but I can now see that I wasn't missing much. I'll wait to reacquire one until at least when Halo Reach comes out.

Luckilly I've found this game for $50 at Wal-mart's online store and it comes with a $10 gift card so I, technically, got it for $40. I was definitely not going to put down a full $60 on an expansion pack just for one new game mode, a short campaign, and to get the remaining 3 maps that I don't have.
This game is, at the most, a $40 game but to anyone, who isn't a die hard Halo nerd that is constantly blind to the ways of the big M, $60 is waaaaay to much for this one.
• NecroArmorLink
This game was such a let down...i hear everyone complain about the game's price and here i am...the genius who thought it was a good idea to get the $100 special edition because it came with a controller and i was in need of a new one... :(
• aerocheder
dang missed first cause math homework but nice review i think it is over priced thank god i only pwn a ps3 and wii or i might have been suckered into buyimg this 30$ game

First time I've seen you review a 360 game, get one recently?
• Guiscard
I knew what I was getting into when I got it and can't be happier with it, especially since I've got a few friends that I'll be playing firefight with. That and I skipped over the map packs for Halo 3, so having those is nice in case I want to jump into multiplayer again.

And really, if you breezed through the campaign in 3 hours you must have been playing on the easier difficulties and/or rushing past fights, which if I recall was why people bemoaned Halo 3's campaign for being short because it can be completed fairly quickly on easy/normal. I just know it took me longer than that even on normal difficulty. /shrug

I don't get, why everyone is bitching on ODST.

First of all, I never saw it anywhere for 60 Bucks. In Germany, where I live, most stores sell it for 50 or cheaper.

Secondly, I have no idea how you can complete the game in 3 hours - except from playing on easy and simply running through all the levels and running from all enemies instead of shooting them.
If this is what you wish to do, don't buy the game, because you don't have interest in it anyway.

Also, the campaign has a lot of replay value. You can play it alone, on Legendary with a view friends and at least once more to get all the audiologs (wich tell a great sidestory by the way) and do some other achievements (if you want).

I don't see why it's a problem, that you can only play Firefight with your friends, because I think you need so much teamwork that it's impossible to play it with strangers (who maybe don't even have a headset) and you where dead in like two rounds.

I also liked the multiplayer-disk. I never would have buy myself all the mappacks, but for people who buy ODST it's a nice addition.
I started playing Halo 3-multiplayer again and it's still a lot of fun.

I'll stop now, because I've already written way too much text. Bottom line - I enjoy ODST and so do many people I know. For me it was already worth the money and I'm still not done with it.

avatar
replay value? like playing the same level twelve times and then beat the last one? (i mean it in a repetitive way.) i think firefight might just be less repetitive than the campaign
• you are reading this
avatar
hard difficulties are standard, multiplayer is standard, achievements are completely standard now, and collectables and firefight type gamemodes are very common. none of these things are really done much better or different than many other shooters, so why get halo for them?... hype, i guess. plus, euros, pounds and other currency ARE NOT EQUAL TO DOLLARS.
[EDIT] wow, i saw this review a while ago and forgot about it, now i just noticed that i already replied to this guy..
• NowCompleteWith  - If you are a Halo geek. Good for you.
avatar
The rest of us will simply continue to ponder why you paid that much money for a freakin expansion pack. Spoony and Sage have both summed it up nicely. If you disagree, then congrats. If you bought the game in Germany for 50, and have no idea why we are going on about it being 60 bucks. Take a gander at the conversion rates fella. Note that you did indeed pay 60 bucks for that game. Take care. Wash your hair.
• keNNy
Two things:
1. I bought the game for 40€ not for 50€.
2. You can't argue with conversion rates. The normal price for a game here is 60€ just like your 60$. Therefore games in the US are ALWAYS cheaper than games in Germany simply because of the conversion rates. You can't simply convert our prices to your currency. Normal price for a game here 60€ = 87,69$ by current conversion rate. You ever imagined paying that much for a game? I think not.
If it weren't for region codes and shipping costs, I would be ordering every game from the US. So consider yourself lucky.

Also I love how everybody who likes Halo is considered a Fanboy or like you said "Halo geek". I never touched Halo 3 for like a year or even longer before ODST came out, so I see no reason to call me a "Halo geek".
Does the simple fact that I enjoy a game and this game accidentally happens to be a Halo game make me a Fanboy? I think not....well, at least I hope not...

  I'm sorry, you are just wrong. While I don't own the game, Some of my friends do, and they have alot of fun with it. First problem, the campaign isn't three hours you dummy, I know it's been said, but still, second, you said the game was alot like Halo 3, then went on to say how different it was, and it IS different, you're slower, weaker, and you did'nt even mention no regen. Also the multiplayer is a nice bonus beacuse IT COMES WITH THREE MAPS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE DOWNLOAD. And finally Firefight deserves way more credit than you gave it, It's the same basic thing as GoW 2 Horde, which was amazing, but it's got the halo twist to it, in fact, gametrailers called it the best iteration of a survival mode type to date.

Well that ends my rant, srry if I went really long, but I'm tired of people badmouthing this game, when it's a good freakking game.
Also the multiplayer is a nice bonus beacuse IT COMES WITH THREE MAPS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE DOWNLOAD.
And this warrants the full $60 price tag because...
Seriously, almost anyone who owns a 360 does or did own Halo 3 and most of those who own it probably bought the map packs that came out for it. So, basically, ODST gives you those same maps that you already bought plus the three remaining maps that should have been DLC at the same time as the release of the game and this is all worth the extra $20 to $30 that you're getting ripped off for?
Sorry to say, but I already bought most of the Halo 3 map packs and I really don't feel like being forced to buy them again just to get the last 3. Call me crazy but that sounds like Microsoft and Bungie saying, "Screw you for your support now fork out more dough for our maps like a good little slave."
Like I said, I've found the game for a good deal. I'm not paying full price for this game and neither should anyone else. It's a $30 to $40 expansion pack that is being sold for $60 because Halo retards will buy it because it has Halo in the title and Microsoft knows this.
• RedBird

ODST DOES have multiplayer. There is a multiplayer disc, seperate from the regular solo disc. If you rented this, then you probably won't get the multi-player. Same with all the other bs online rental game systems.
• HopeWithinChaos
Dude...it says in his review that the rental didn't come with the Halo 3 multiplayer disc. But even so, to just throw in halo 3 without the campaign is just lazy.
• Gretnablue  - What the hell

First of all, the only way you'll be able to finish this game in 3 hours is if you are playing this on easy and skip all sub-missions, in which case what do you expect. second of all I bought my for £37.98 in scotland. Thirdly without reapeting anyone, it seems a lot of the problems your having is with microsoft, it seems to me that is any other company that tries to give it self a mascot like nintendos mario games, they are put down. It seems odd now your complaining since quite a few of the nes games were simply like this.
• Wendell

A glorified expansion pack indeed. And also i think it takes allot from the fun of halo. if i want to be a paper man that gets raped by aliens i would be playing something like resistance 2. IMO the appeal of halo is that you are a walking man tank. Nuff said.
• JohniBoi
Am I the only one who thinks Halo 3 epicly failed to live up to expectations? I mean Halo was a revolution, and Halo 2 was even better, so why did Halo 3 suck?

I personally beat this game on legendary in 3 hours. 4 hours with Bennett here. And both of those runs including not skipping ANY cutscenes.

Secondly, with his comparing to halo 3, He was perfectly truthful, stating it was just like halo 3 with only a few exceptions, such as no duel wielding, etc. very few changes.

On the 3 new maps with the Multiplayer disc, While they've stated that Mythic 2 maps will NEVER be DLC, 3 maps to bump up an otherwise 30 dollar price tag, to 60 dollars is just plain criminal in my opinion. I bought ALL the old DLC, and now after having ODST, it makes all of my previous purchases absolutely meaningless.

Please be aware also, this is an OPINION. this is HIS view on the game. Everything stated on a fact basis though, is 100% true.

Sage I love your reviews they're honest and to the point, but with game in particular I've been getting too many mixed messages from different reviewers. Many Reviewers like your self as well as the "official" review websites seem to have 3 different ideas about how Good, Bad, or SUCKY Halo 3: ODST is. A good example would be the conflicting Hours of Gameplay note, in your review above you say about 3 hours, however other reviewers state that the game is 4 and some say that it can reach 5 to 6 hours or even 10 hours on the hardest difficulty. there are too many sources to list here, but you get the point right?
this game seems to have too many personal biases toward it both fan boys and haters and I can't figure out who's telling the truth and who's making stuff up.
all in all my main question is: "was it fun to play?"
• YourAverageJoe

Same here. Storn just invalidated his statement before even getting to it
• RocketGruntKenny
What most of you don't seem to realize is that his complaints aren't due to the fact that Bungie and Microsoft are cashing in on their mascot, Halo, but that the pricetag is too ridiculous for a game that is like the previous installment, but with a few subtle differences and maps (some previously available for sale, others not).

As for those who don't live in the USA, of course you aren't going to shelf out $60 for this game, but the exchange rates from our country to yours are basically asking for the same thing; you're paying $60 American dollars in your own currency, thanks to exchange rates.

As an owner of an Xbox 360, one reason why I hate the Halo franchise is because that's the only game that everybody thinks about when it comes to the Xbox 360's library. This makes the other games on the Xbox 360 look completely underrated
compared to any Halo or Gears game. All the other games on the 360 is shadowed by Halo's over-hype.

Doesn't any Xbox 360 owner talk about other great games like Crackdown, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Shadow Complex, or any other game that's only
for Xbox or Xbox 360??? There are a lot more better games on the Xbox 360 than Halo & Gears, if you just stop being a Halo-Whore and play a different game on the Xbox 360.

Seriously! Microsoft should seriously make better franchises than just another shooter game because that's what most people think of the Xbox 360 library. I'm yet to meet an Xbox 360 owner who doesn't own any Halo game.
• Vault Master  - Halo Free
avatar
I've had a 360 since launch and while I've played all the Halo games (thanks to my friends being Halo-heads), I've never owned a single one.

Then again, I've never really been a fan, so I may be biased, but Halo has just always seemed far too generic for me. The characters don't have enough personality, seemingly stuck lazily into "future space marine vs. aliens" cliche with no flair. And I have a really hard time getting behind a faceless main character.

The only games I've kept without trading in are Fallout 3, GTA4, Mass Effect and Oblivion.

But hey, if you dig the games, more power to ya. I don't mind playing them, I'm just not prepared to plop down full price for something I'm not feelin'. ODST, however, just seems to be a bad investment for anyone, excluding only the most hardcore fans of the series.

Good review, Bennett.
• Demon Lord1954  - re
well first Halo or Gears are Xbox only game that has multiplayer with more then two other player and the games you listed have almost no multiplayer and the Xbox 360 was made with online multiplayer in mind also CoD:4 is the most played game on Xbox and PS3 right now.
also hating a good franchise because it's overrate or because it has a big fan base is an asshole reason. It's overrate because people love it and that tells me that Bungie is doing some thing right
• RocketGruntKenny  - re:

I would have been one of those owners who didn't own a Halo game... if my system didn't come with the fucking thing! Seriously, I got a 360 as a birthday gift, and lo and behold, I get Fable 2 (NICE!) and Halo 3 with it. I detest Halo, so that's kind of a slap in the face to me.

Yeah 60 is too much too ask for. Especially coming from a guy like me who has more or less been on a DLC embargo. In a time where companies think that 800MS points for a darth vader or yoda, 400MS points for a lightsaber for your avatar, or 60 dollars for what is essentially a mission pack. Some people have to just say no thanks. Now granted I'm sure not enough people say no thanks, because otherwise they wouldn't keep pricing things like they are, obviously they are making a decent profit at their ridiculous price points. I'll wait till I can get ODST for about 20-30 bucks, and thats it.
• SirMarksalot

Meh, I just traded in two shit games for it and paid off the rest (which was $20), and well...the game is better than the shit games I traded in, let's put it that way.

Still, Microsoft has proven it can get away with this shit. The price'll probably go down in a month or two, but seriously...the fuck, man?
