I played it for a short while at a friends house, and was not impressed.
My largest complaint, something has seemd to plague every fighting game except SF, is it's roster of generic and arbitrary characters. Most fighting games always seem to have a ninja of sorts, a chick, and a hulking brute.
I wasn't really impressed by the gameplay either, and i don't see the game adding anything so the genre.

08.13.2009 - 02:18 | Commissar JakeIt does look really empty and bland compared to other fighting games.
-
08.13.2009 - 02:27 | YigSnakeDaddyFunny how you tend to use the PS3 versions if you review a mediocre or bad game.

For a fighting game, I think using the PS3 version is actually giving the game a shot, due to its controller being more suited.

08.13.2009 - 05:23 | NiGHTS NoobHow? I'm sorry, but do you even play fighting games?
The PS3/ every Playstation controllers are easily some of the worst controllers for fighting games in recent memory. Probably only topping many ancient systems. The problem isn't the button placement, that's nice enough and it gets the job done, the problem is that freaking D-Pad. It's horrendous, because it's just the directional arrows sticking out it's really hard on your thumb and particularly unresponsive. It needs the rolling circular D-Pad of the Genesis, Saturn, and even the 360 (although it has terrible placement) to be effective.
I went out and bought a rather expensive Logitech PS2 controller with the rolling pad simply because my thumb quite literally started peeling off skin from being so raw after playing King of Fighters XI for a few hours.

05.01.2011 - 22:48 | SilverFoxRYou're insane... or the "Noob" in your name fits well.
The PS3 (and prior Playstation model) controllers have time and time again been considered the best controllers for fighting games, partly because of the D-pad you so ignorantly bashed.
Unlike the 360's D-pad disk, the PS3's D-pad is precise and accurately reads the movement commands you are trying to put in. The 360's disk is quite loose and unprecise, which is much more noticible if you're a REAL fighting game player.
My suggestion to you is to not jam so hard on the pad... yes, it can hurt if you're really tensing up on the pad, but you don't need nearly that much pressure to get precise controls.

@CentiZen
Nice
This review was a bit quieter in volume than your other reviews for some reason. And I can also agree with some points in your review seeing I have played KOF before. It did have a small ammount of characters seeing there were in fact a large number of character back in the other games like Orochi and K or Maxima. But if this was the direction they were going they should atleast make an story mode

Great review though Bennett, the volume's a bit funky though.

08.13.2009 - 06:50 | First Person ShaneI'm only now getting into KOF, and I can already tell that this will be a disappointment to the fans. Not much change besides the aesthetic, and leaving out VERY popular characters like Mai? We're better off downloading '98 SE. This whole thing just looks like characters slapped onto a game engine, and another case of confusing new people like Angry Joe and myself, and annoying the long time fans.
Also, I must agree with Mark Ross. As Paw said in his LP, "Put some life into it, man!" I love your very professional reviews, Sage, but you do tend to take on a droning tone. Work on that, and you'll truly be one of the best. :cheer:

08.13.2009 - 07:28 | ScottDevonKaneWow, no story mode?
For the past five or so KoF games, I've bought the game for the STORY first and the fighting second. Only other fighting game I can honestly say I've done that for is Mortal Kombat, and even then, in its last few installments, the story in MK is pretty 'bleh'.
I might add... what in the world did they do to these characters?!? Clark looks more like Ralf now. Did you see how fat Goro Daimon was? And once again, no Mai. I'm not sure how they can continue to add characters to the roster like Andy and leave out Mai. What happened to Leona and Whip? If your game can include 40+ characters in a previous game, then they really should include as many in the next.
Looks like a total disappointment for KoF fans...

Its not their fault. They we're bought out by Capcom and then they bought
themselves back. Then within a limited amount of time, they were supposed to re-draw every chanracter, which could take months each since they had lost everything. There's rumors that the Mai script is in the game, so with an
update, im sure she'll be back, and some other characters as well.
As for the story mode, they really cant do anything right now, but I'm pretty sure the lag in the online mode will be fixed.

If that's the case, then they should have pushed back production until it was finished.
Companies are getting lazy and pushing things out before they are done. Angry Joe addressed this in his Fallout review I think; they want us to buy the game and stay for the patches. BS! The game should be done when I buy it. Fixing glitches is one thing, but leaving out entire modes and characters is just ridiculous!
Oh, and if you don't think they are gonna charge people to play as Mai, you're very optimistic!

If you want oooodles of story, play blazblue or MK vs DC. If you want visuals, play soul calibre and if you want shotos gays and scrubs, play sf4.
this game was a new design concept, a prototype of sorts, cause the developers are trying something new. The fighting is good. this is a FIGHTING game, so it does the job.

Uh... no. Hell no.
SNK went defunct in 2001, the founder created a new company called "Playmore," which then merged with what was left and created the entity which is currently known as "SNK Playmore" in 2003.
So, SNK Playmore has only themselves to blame.
The PS3/ every Playstation controllers are easily some of the worst controllers for fighting games in recent memory.
I'm not all that sure, dude. Everyone I know would much rather play a fighting game on a PlayStation controller than a 360 controller, especially since the 360 d-pad is essentially just another joystick with a d-pad face, making supers and ultras way harder to pull off than normal.

when theres a whole bunch of new things being imputed into an old game, the end result always seems like it isnt enough. (like gta 2 to gta 3) Hopefully they'll make another dream match with ALL the characters (BRING THE YAMAZAK BACK!!!) I somehow figured this game would be a dissapointment, but didnt expect it to be THAT bad. Overall, IMO they need to Follow a their classic Themes with some addons(Beat Em up mode would be really sweet)

but in saying that: One thing that i always liked about KOF that SF hardly did with every release, is they actually changed stuff around radically instead of just updating a little bit then rereleasing SFII 16 times [i did the math]:
New Characters/No~Show characters
Different arenas every year
Different mid+Final Boss fight
Different use of the Specials and the supermeters sometimes changed
Most characters had different endings every year
As opposed to Street Fighter:
All the characters specials changed slightly
New characters every couple of years
Some characters/boss fights have broken infinity combos
Different chapter=different roster
Ryu clone again
I actually thought the KOF Maximum Impact series was a pretty competent and enjoyable game, except for the shitty loading times and craptastic boss fight.
