I never even heard of this. I guess I have to turn in my anime fan card now.

For Anime's first cyborg he does have allot of negative side media aside from the American version of his original anime. This isn't even the worst. That's the 8-man toku. GOD ITS THE MOUNT EVEREST SHIT!!! So boring so badly acted.

Btw for anyone not knowing this, 8-man and Gavan are both the inspiration for Robocop. Its also one of the first anime to have aired state-wise, though it was at a time when no-one really ever noticed.

Gonna call bullshit on that http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ RoboCop#Inspiration_and_s cript

". Edward Neumeier stated that he first got the idea of Robocop when he walked past a poster for Blade Runner. He asked his friend what the film was about and he replied saying, "It's about a cop hunting robots". This then sparked the idea for him about a robot cop."

"The character of RoboCop itself was inspired by British comic book hero Judge Dredd[3] as well as the Marvel Comics superhero Rom."

I Liked this Movie.. Except the Fact I was pretty confused in the Beginning when she knew 8 Man before meeting him in her Flashback.. Thanks too Ur Little Back story.. Now I know I just forget the fact she even knew him.. That was Kindda stupid but every thing else was totally Bad Ass..
  • Sarras  - Nicely taken apart, great references to recent ani

I am always amused by the fascination with and glorification of voice-acting. I maintain that one should merely watch any given anime in its original language with subtitles if you have issues, but this is not possible I assume with the original 8 Man because of its vintage.
I am extra amused that you take exception with the voice acting in the original 8 Man, but cigarette-smoking-to- gain-powers gets a pass. I would estimate that the voice-acting is on par with most television shows from its era (as you point out with the cigarette smoking being on par with its era Bennett.) Fun and funny.
Great review, I really liked the pared down story that revealed the gooey nonsensical core.

No Matter how bad the english dub may be (oh hi there Chaos Wars), i will always listen to an english dub when available over the Japanese version, for the sole fact i prefer hearing my own language. Your point means nothing when there are people like that.

@ 25:30 naw, that was just lazy localization/translation editing, I hope.
  • Vobore  - Just an observation
I found it interesting that the character paralleled the show. The character is superficially similar to the original, but isn't really the same, just as the show may appear connected to the original. Just like the character, nothing really remains but the name.

If 8 Man is named for being the professor's eighth attempt at creating a crime-fighting cyborg, and the main character of this movie is the successor to the original 8 Man, then shouldn't he be called 9 Man instead of 8 Man? Since he is the professor's ninth attempt at creating a crime-fighting cyborg rather than his eighth attempt.

I'm the Escaflowne fan among Anime Abandon's viewers! Just in case you couldn't tell from previous comments. April O' Neil/Megan Fox is almost as irritating as Escaflowne's Hitomi. I say "almost" because at least Hitomi is capable of heroism at times. Once her heroism is spent, however, she turns into a complete pacifist and chides anyone for attempting to fight.
  • kyren0
If 8-man was named 8-man because he was the eighth attempt, shouldn't this new guy be 9-man? Or is that too close to cyborg 009?
  • NightmareLuffy719
pet shop of horrors and bastard are two anime very much in the 90's style of anime.
  • satireknight
My dad recognized the opening of "8 Man" - apparently he saw it when he was a kid. He says it wasn't that dark when he was young, so I think it's darkened due to poor storage/age.

I never really thought about it before, but Sage (and other reviewers) giving some character's nicknames is actually a really big deal. It lets me easily remember who is who and gives us some basic character traits as opposed to having to memorize up to 6 new generic/random name every vid.
  • Shawdawg  - Is it me or does the face of this 8-Man at least..
Look kind of like Frieza from DBZ?

Aw come on, April O'Neil wasn't this stupid. And at least she was just trying to get the best story, even if it meant risking her life. This dumb bitch just ruins everything! I thought I've seen women written stupid, but my God, this has to be the worst I can think of. I don't know, this anime seemed to have potential. It was a good idea at least, but was implemented and written so horribly. Though i am now curious about the original 8 man. The style is adorable and I like that it's black and white.
  • Souledge94  - yup
I think if they just left out the orginal 8 man and said this was just a brand new start proboly it would suck a little less. Since you wouldint have them acknowledging the orginal character and just crap all over him and tossing him aside without any weight towards it.

A Sage anime review the same day Spoony takes a swipe at Final Fantasy Unlimited. My luck day ^.^

This anime is super forgettable; The only things I remember about this movie is that I saw it back-to-back with Casshan on Sci-Fi, & that there's a similar sounding anime called Eat-Man.

Died & was reborn as a cyborg. Hmmm...Didn't you already do the WTF-fueled All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku, or the disappointing alternate universe Nuku-Nuku Dash?

Azuma = Ozma. Purinsessu Azuma abu Azu.

Huh...I wonder if the other side of 90s Kid's orange cap says "Nickelodeon."

While I'm actually fond of the cold bitch types you dislike, I've got to agree that this woman really takes the useless dumbshit cake.

Hmmm, which to vote on...Legend of Lemnear really wants to be hentai but never goes there, & Apocalypse Zero is WTF, 60s character designs, & gargantuan granny tits. Either way, plenty of editing for you!

Devil-Man's not so bad. Not his best work though...Go Nagai knows how to do ecchi right; the sexy heroines are strong & powerful, don't need a man to save them, & the perverts die horrible deaths.

...and I'm glad I don't remember it all that well.

I've seen it be shown like a handful of times before everything else was shown and that was it.

Now to look back on it and to see how much bullshit was on this was just...UGH!

Now, for the next review of Devil Man....HOO BOY with this one coming up. I've seen it in subtitled format once and can barely remember that one too, but from what I can somewhat piece...it's definitely going to be a doozy.
  • Ahess20
Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my God! Devilman is next! Sage I've been waiting for you to review it since Anime Abandon premiered. Don't let me down! Knock this one out of the park!

This review was hard to watch because this anime seems soooooo bad!

It's the kind of bad that's actually pretty hard to make fun of...
  • SwiftSwerve65  - Come for the review, leave to rant over Lady "Over
Great review Sage, I loved it. I Hated "April" quite a bit, though I kind of feel like we're insulting April, she had some stereotype to her but she never had this sanctimonious bullshit spewing out of her mouth XD.

I figure the writer may have been a bit of a naive type, no real critical thinking skills or reasoning for writing the issues meant for the anime... BUT I am making only assumptions without evidence of the time the anime had to be made or knowledge of the writers, but it certainly feels like the writer had said problems.

Otherwise the animes other qualities felt around meh, the art and animation were alright, above average perhaps but only by a few stray hairs, voice acting wasn't bad at all, plot was pretty crap in a lot of ways. This anime is a good typical example of reboots made just to be gritty and get on popular band wagons of the time.
Not to say gritty reboots are automatically bad, they can be fine if they have good focus and careful thought put into them, same as any other reboot.

The funny thing is, Robocop that came after.... you can just as well say that IS a good Eight-Man movie, far better then this crud, and far more enjoyable. I don't know Eight-Man much save for a arcade game I played a few times as a kid >.>, but after seeing this, I like to think Robocop was the true successor to the legacy.

Very good review Sage, I look forward to the next review. I've given my vote on the site.

P.S Old 8-Man getting his powers from smoking is HILARIOUS, I honestly think in "Archer",they should have Barry take some power from some uranium-coated cigars, that would be a good reference. ^^

Sage is gonna look at Devilman next? AWESOME! I've been waiting for this one for ages. I think it's time for me to dust off my happy dance.

The brain in the jar is Baxter Stockman from the 2003 TMNT cartoon. There. I'm satisfied.

and none of my suggestions made it into your poll XD awww. Oh well. I don't know any of the other films/OVAs up for voting so I'll just wait and see what happens :D

And as a lover of OLD old school anime... this OVA hurt my feels :'(
  • Mothmouth
Boy, I have to say Sage, you have reviewed some of the worst garbage in anime that I feel am blessed to have never even heard of for as long as I have known anime, but it must be one hell of an achievement to consider this anime, out of all other ones, to be "garbage".

Frankly, I think they all deserve to be inside a trash compactor regardless of the varying qualities of bad that they have, but that's just me.

On this anime, all those action scenes with 8 Man just seemed dumb. All he was doing was just squeezing criminals 'till blood started spurting out. This guy doesn't give a shit.

Also, I have never heard of a single anime that's in that poll, so I'm not sure if I'm illegible for voting. But, considering that people want them on the show, I think I'm glad I don't have to vote.
  • TBTabby
Joey Wheeler gave us a better tribute to 8-Man!
  • Bronx Prodigy  - Things to say
"The Last 8 Man paid the ultimate price for forgetting that."

"Yea, he paid the price by being dropped from his own series and replaced by a bland D-Bag. Don't let that happen to you."

See DMC: Devil May Cry for proof of that.

Great review. I remember seeing pieces of this anime on Sci-Fi. Now, I'm glad I didn't see all of it.

As for the ballots for the upcoming vids, I'm pulling for Art of Fighting. Sadly, that's all I can ask for since you haven't gotten to what I hoped for...yet: your review on SFII: The animated movie.

I hope he reviews "SiN: The Movie". Apart from the characters, it has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the games XD
