New Cutie Honey wasn't the only part of the franchise we got. Bandai released the live-action movie a few years ago.

Cutie Honey Flash, which kinda sounds like the disappointing Dirty Pair Flash. & then Re: Cutie Honey.
  • Dragon_Nexus
Dirty Pair Flash is my favourite, dammit 8C

yeah i just saw it today at my local comic shop

Actually the origional 1973 Cutey Honey series is going to be released subbed this fall.

Also one thing you forgot to touch on is the Opening Theme. Even though you don't usually, it's worth noting that EVERY SINGLE VERSION OF CUTEY HONEY uses the same themesong with a little retooling. That's the origional in 1973, New Cutey Honey 20 year later, Cutey Honey Flash which was basically Cutey Honey reworked along the lines of Sailor Moon, Gainax's crazy over the top RE: Cutey Honey, and the live action movie and TV series. Every one of them used the same theme song with a few changes.

Isn't Honey voiced by Erica Schroeder?

I may have laughed a little too hard at the Bible Black nod.

Oh how I would love for Sage to review that god awful dub.

Or other nudity-high classic warrior women series like Kekkou Kamen & Devil Woman & that actually good panchira action flick called Blitz Tactics Nazica.

Stop trying to turn me into a lesbian, Sage.

Do you mean Devil Lady? (also by Go Nagai)

Kekkou Kamen Was also done by Go Nagi

As would I, but I am sure like with Violence Jack, he is going to probably save that anime for something special and not just a regular review.

At least, that is my understanding of it.

I waited for so long for the original to come overseas when I was little, it looked so awesome and that music was so damn catchy. Ah well, thank you Sage for doing the new justice. This was a very good look at some high quality fan service done right.

What about Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? That was fun!

OH MY GOODNIGHT YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I HAVE WAITED FOR YOU TO REVIEW THIS!!! SCORE!!!!
  • DaisyHead
I remember only being able to see the first episode of this incarnation on tv. They never aired it after that. I find the concept of this one very interesting.
  • Samsneeze  - Catchiest theme song ever?
No really, the theme song is completely addictive and probably the most suggestive thing you can hear in an anime opening.

Also, I think Cutie Honey was either the original fan service anime or the first magical girl anime. Could have been both, I'd have to check dates with a few other shows from the time period.
  • rowdycmoore

Yeah, the most recent version of the song by Koda Kumi, made for the Re: Cutey Honey show, seems the most addictive version of it. I wish they'd dub that, because from what little I've seen, it's 1000 times even MORE insane than this series.
  • paradiseandfaries  - New Cutey Honey is the worst of the bunch?
    avatar
Hey, I'm a long time viewer and i love your work, but i honestly didn't enjoy New Cutey Honey all that much. Really, it was the setting that kinda soured me. i freely admit that it's a fun little show, but Cosplay city always seemed to be clashing with the hold overs from the original 1973 honey. After reviewing it myself, I went on a pilgrimage of sorts, first looking at the 1973 original (http:// www.screwattack.com/ shows/fanservice-fiesta/ fanservice-fiesta- original-cutey-honey) and then looking at the 2003 Gainax reboot (http:// www.screwattack.com/ shows/fanservice-fiesta/ fanservice-fiesta- recutey-honey-madhog) these are some of my older videos, so perhaps they are a little rough around the edges, but i hope you check out both of those, even if they never got a release here. i enjoyed them because, as you said, they're fun, even more so without the gritty, distopian city.

that's the name of the game when it comes to fan service. . . mostly it appeals just to that ONE demographic

unless it's JUST THAT MUCH FUN !!!
  • Youngbountygirl
Wow lol. Cutie Honey, the only show where you get your cheesecake and have fun with it.
  • Souledge94  - On fan service
So basicly your only fine with fan service if you like the character. My view on it is that it doesint make a difference. Why you ask because fan service doesint enhance or lessen a character no matter who they may be. its just good ol t&n and it serves its purpose.

I didint see the big problem with those girl bravo scenes you showed. I guess its just sexy or slezz im fine with ether. It doesint hamper it however it makes me make sure the coast is clear before it happens.

That wrestler's mask is none other than Jushin Thunder Liger, one of the most recognizable Japanese wrestlers. He wrestled for a time in WCW as well.
  • cannedfury
And he was tied to a gore and nudity-filled Go Nagai bio-mecha anime of the same name. Ghost chicks making out with horses, monsters ripping out and eating each others' eyeballs... It was a good show for kids.

Go Nagai - He's crazy, knows he's crazy and he LOVES every second of it! The guy who pretty much brought us mecha, magical girl and fanservice animes that we know today!
  • shadowmaksim  - This reminded me of Queen's Blade
For some odd reason, alot of what you attributed that made "New Cutey Honey" enjoyable to you kept making me think about Queen's Blade.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Queen's_Blade

On the surface, it's a fan-service heavy series with an almost all female cast battling one another while getting nude in the process, bare uncensored breasts included (in the anime only though). And it's one of my most favorite series, to the point that it is one of only three things that I will openly admit to being a fanboy of.

Do note that I'm not talking about just the anime but as an entire franchise and then some (3 seasons, 2 OVAs, 4-5 manga, 2 PSP SRPGs, ect).

I also saw a couple of parallels. A fairly large cast, each with their own motives and quirks which make them likable and a little more than just walking breasts connected to bodies. The fanservice, at least in the anime, is shamelessly shown over and over again. There are even some times where the series makes fun of its own character designs. The character Reina, for example, wears a breastplate that covers only her front but there was a scene where she got slashed at her sides where the armor doesn't cover her and gets wounded from it.

To be fair, it isn't without its faults. While the animation is, in my opinion, very good, the fighting scenes weren't really impressive at times. I also have experience from more than just the anime alone so my views may be skewed.

I can just keep going on why I like this series beyond just the fanservice but I'll stop here since I'm mixing and forgetting points.

Oh yeah, regarding "Girls Bravo", I rather liked it. It wasn't anything special but not utter sh*t. Maybe it's because I'm remembering the manga more than the anime (I don't remember that scene you showed for example) but I liked it.

Nice review. I will definitely have to check this one out.

Also I really liked you talk about the difference in Sexy and Sleezy fan service.

I've seen a few cases of Sleeze fan service and most of the time it just ended up bothering me and my friends more than anything else.

I am a feminist but to me if the fan service is done right and done equally who he fuck cares.

It's like how I really liked the fan service in Star Driver. It was REALLY over the top *cough* drill nipple lesbians *cough* but still done in a really fun way that I ended up enjoying.

Bennett's announcement last month was a coincidence for me since I found out about Go"GoGo"Nagai from a panel not to long ago & his..."impact" on anime...& excessive use of sideburns XD~
Character Cameos-Yup, this actually happens in every, single one of Nagai-sensei's manga. There are supposed to be two cameos in the Violence Jack anime but judging from the short clips I got from the panel I'm afraid to check :( It's also quite possible that this is how the CLAMP verse was originally conceived since they noted Nagai's work(mainly Cutie Honey) as one of their influences.
Good Fanservice/"Sexy over Sleazy"-Yes! As a woman, I know exactly what Bennett is talking about! Granted I'm not attracted to women, but I know what he means by a likable personality and some amount of subtlety equating to a more sexy character rather than the physically "sexy" aspects being shoved in the audience's faces(space hooper boobs, endless panty shots, etc.). And with this concept in mind, I'm usually a good judge of what makes a female character attractive as well as a male. Although, us gals got the opposite problem. Man-service is SO underplayed to the point where it's practically nonexistent-_-
Overall, Cutie Honey has flown under my radar too long and Bennett just might be the man who convinces me to finally sit down & watch it. Also, if Tezuka is the father of anime then Nagai is da Godfather who gave it a gun and pack of cigars! May the devils be in favor of that crazy mofo when he leaves this realm.

This is a great show mostly be cos of the sexiness
I really don't like the lesbian parts it is not sexy its a turn off
Thanks for making me want to watch Girl Bravo less ass

The only version of Cutey Honey I've seen is Cutey Honey Flash, which unlike any other version is more child oriented, though.. there was that one passive-aggressive breast fondling scene... there're also a lot of other differences; Cyber-granpa is just Honey's school principal, and Honey is technicly human, not an android.
  • B-Navigator
When the original Cutey Honey came out in 1973, the series which was aimed at young guy's (and did have as much fanservice as a tv series could get away with back then), was also much beloved by the gals in the audience. Probably because she was one of the first women in anime to take on evil directly instead of acting as the support for the guy who did the fighting. Also as mentioned, she was a fun character who was dedicated, and focused, and yet also upbeat and cheerful.
As mentioned, Honey changed a ton of things for anime aimed at girls, and inspired a lot of later series, of which Sailor Moon was the biggest example.
Then after Sailor Moon's last season ended, it's production crew got tapped to step in and redo the origional inspiration, Cutey Honey, with a nod to all the magical girl series that were so inspired by it. And thus Cutey Honey Flash was born.

Oh, and Grandpa also wasn't a cyborg in the original, they added that in New to justify him still being around after 100 years, and so they could reference Mazinger Z with all his cyborg powers.
  • LHG
Huh... That's possibly the best advertisement for the NRA that could possibly be made ever.... Except maybe Trigun.
  • ladydiskette

Wow, that scene with the metal bra shield and the breasts was definitely what I would call breaking the fourth wall in anime.
  • B-Navigator
Well the origional dialog was a bit more subtle, Honey just went, "How did I survive?" Opened her top to reveal the metal bra shield and said, "If these perfect breasts were damaged, there'd be grieving fans around the world."
