Movie plot = Audrey Hepburn's Roman Holiday...Iiiiin spaaaaaaace!

    Cast & romantic plot: Robotech (1st & 2ed seasons).

Hibiki Kanzaki = Rick Hunter (torn between two women) & Joe Bradley (a photographer for the news).

Ishtar = Lin Min-Mei (Singer from Robotech), Musica (War Singer from Robotech Masters) & Princess Ann (A runaway pretending to be local).

Silvie Gena = Lisa Hayes (Bossy stubborn unexpected last minute love interest replacement).

You'd better take it easy on Tenchi, I'm warning you!
  • Legendary Emerald  - Ehh
Speaking as a fan of TV Tenchi and the first two OVA series, it's far from perfect. In fact, you could say its a perfect example of a stupid harem anime. But if you're into that stupidity, it's probably the best of its kind. Doesn't mean it isn't stupid, though.

Edit: Oh god, it's "Tenchi the Movie" that he's going to review. I'm looking forward to all the "Back to the Future" jokes. I've never seen a less creative time-travel movie in my life, anime or otherwise.
  • Shadowstorm87x
Sped up KMFDM is bad news, Should have just left it the way it was.
  • Legendary Emerald  - Agreed
This intro is almost painful to listen to now. I appreciate the new video footage/editing, but I think it needs to be redone again if it'd allow the song to play at normal speed.

I like the new version of the intro song.
  • Xandermorph
It's sped up? I never noticed... I gotta say I don't think I hear it... I'll have to listen to my copy of Ultra again.

Holy shit, if I was Ishtar, I would probably stab that guy in the throat and run like a bat out of hell.

But not before I found my clothes.

hack yeah this is the universe where earthlings get thousands of girls just because we're handsome Devils, seriously the new series that's falling the police section of the series, shows a clumsy cursed with extreme bad luck, getting not only 1, not only two girls, no he's got three lovely ladies! In the first season and none of them is below the legal age. I really wish I was in the Tenchi universe right now I would get so much Sex, and I'm already 16% Elvish that gives me 10 more points in the charisma score!
  • jycool
Actually I would say that it's not exactly the power of your boss being a dick that defeted the enemy. I would say that it was the mighty power of stopping for a micro-sec and asking your self why.

great review, sage :) looking forward to hearing what you have to say about tenchi.

also, woot! i love macross plus! XD

that was the first non-childish anime i ever saw :P

Loved the review, Sage. I still have my old VHS copy of Macross II. It was disappointing, compared to everything else Macross I've seen, but not totally unwatchable. But I'm surprised you didn't touch on the romantic subplot between Hibiki and Sylvie that comes out of left field, when you think it's Hibiki and Ishtar that were going to get together (Macross is FAMOUS for its love triangles, after all). Oh, well, I guess there's only so much room for dickery in a review.

And don't worry. I reacted the same way to Mash.

Tenchi Movie's up next? I LOVED that anime! Can't wait to see your thoughts on it. :)

So the thing I'm getting from this is that Sage:
    1) Missed the part where "wild" Zentradi are so culturally starved even J-pop moves them into inaction and surrender.
    2) He has a thing for transgender Zentradi with careers in hair-styling.

Bennett, you buffoon. It's not trying to be Master of Puppets. It's trying to be 2 Minutes to Midnight!

It's definitely somewhere between the two. Master of Puppets is chromatic, whereas the little riff in the movie there is more minor pentatonic/bluesy, like 2 Minutes to Midnight. However, the rhythm and accents resemble Master of Puppets more.

I'd say it's actually more like Demon Sweeney Todd by Saxon.

As bad as this was I can never bring myself to consciously hate anything Macross related.

We can forgive the series for this flub if you think about all the awesome things they have done since. Basara flying a valkyrie with his guitar and saving giant space whales with the power of 90's J-pop for example.
  • Archedgar
Akira, Eva, hugely credited for this!

I thought that we would get to Tenchi at some point on this show. Have fun with it Sage. Also I have another request, could you review the Yu-Yu Hakusho movie. You know the one, the one that doesn't have the Funimation dub?

New intro, not bad. Not bad. It definitely looks more professional looking than before.

As for Macross, I've never watched it, but only know of it by name. I'm sure my cousin knows a whole lot about Macross.

As for next month, please be nice to Tenchi. This was my childhood, or rather, my junior high years. And I was growing up to learn about human physiology, if you know what I mean.

I kinda scares me how many movies I like & own end up on this show....Does this mean I'm the Obscurus Lupa of Anime?

You know that when this came out, there were only three kinds of dubs; bad, agonizingly bad, & hilariously bad.

But uh...Any part of the show focusing on the emperor is just...I don't even...

Loved Robotech. Someday I will see all the lost episodes from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. Someday I will watch Super Dimension Fortress Macross raw or subtitled. But first I need money.

Song warfare would make sense if they were using the right kind of music, but soft pop hardly gets the adrenaline pumping. Now something like "One: Always Hardcore" by Scooter or Norman Bass' "How You Like Bass: Warp Brothers Club Mix" are some blood-pumping songs you could set a fight to.

Why do we call them "emos" when we should be calling them Eores?"

Sage! Please give us a really REALLY bad dub this year. I'm talking House of the Dead 2 so bad it's funny.

Tenchi Muyo...Not a fan. & I SHOULD be, because I enjoy Unwanted Harems with crazy scary bloodthirsty bitches, like Happy Lesson or Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan season 1 or the Love Hina Fanmade Sim Date....that was hilarious.
  • CheeseoftheApocalypse  - Not Really
No, not really the Obscurus Lupa of anime. You have to remember Sage is mostly just entertaining. His ability to analyze is anything but decent.
  • Clinton
Holy shit, that was Steve Blum as Lord Fehhhh. Must've been a very early role.

Also, looks like early appearances of the Fahn family as well.

I actually watched Robotech as a kid but didn't know was anime. One of the first anime I saw knowing was anime was maybe this or plus. I can't remember exactly. This was available on Netlfix in both formats as was plus. I think both are still that way on Manga Entertainment's x-box 360 app. Clash Of Bionoids. Yeah that so obscure that it gets one little mention in anime encyclopedia book in macross section. First tenchi movie? Oh boy. Other then a little confusion which universe takes place it's best of three tenchi movies. This should be interesting but good way I hope.

The music the pop singers were singing wasn't to inspire the troops in the Robotech timeline. It was to confuse and disorient the Zentradi who had never heard music before; they became enthralled and disturbed by the unique and unusual sounds.

The Zentradi soldiers also had no concept of male-female relations, so the broadcast of something a kiss drove a wedge into the alien forces and caused them to reconsider their existence as drone-like clone armies.

Macross II in its OVA form was first entry of Macross franchise that I saw and I used to love it.
  • Seneschal

I like the encouraging-the-troops angle a bit better. If they were supposed to confuse the Zentradi, couldn't they just switch radio channels? Or did the humans just broadcast on all frequencies? I mean, you can opt out of j-pop blaring through the speakers, you don't have to listen to enemy propaganda if you don't want to.

In Frontier, I think they explained it with the singers being genetic experiments, like queen bees, whose singing disorients the vajra hive-mind (though, the initial purpose was to control them). I think. It's a bit hazy, haven't seen it in a while.

i have not seen this "movie" in ages. i remember catching on TV one morning back in my young teen days and i liked it quite a bit. over time i forgot what it was called and only remembered the word "macross" and i even have a shirt with a guy that kind of reminds of Feth or that emperor guy on it. this one hit me right in the nostalgia Sage...good work.

Ah, I remember getting macross II when I was only vaguely aware of the macross tie to robotech.

And yeah, Macross is one of my favorite franchises, though the idea from the original that the 'culture shock' introduced by creativity (as represented by music) to a race that only knows war become an actual weapon in macross II is still kind of daft. (though frontier uses the idea much more effectively).

as for tenchi... ok, I loved the first six oav episodes, the 2nd series had some great moments, and some distinctly insulting ones (hey, lets have all these girls fight over what a great mom they can be to impress this tenchi, let s have a beautiful moment between two sisters be overshadowed by the elder being mentally jealous of how much the prettier than her the younger will be when she grows up), and by that point I couldn't build any interest in the tv series or its spinoffs.

I loved the original series and the fan wanted seventh episode, but sadly they didn't explore how far Tenchi (the teenager) could've been. He just became the farmer of carrots to the last episode.

GXP was somewhat of a dream project by the original designer, but even that one. Them Japs think big.. but never want to win. Watch any Japanese anime show and see how often the main team LOOSES the final match. 'Ashita no Joe' was and still IS the prefect template creators of now and the future will FOREVER follow.

Fan love gave us the third batch of Tenchi Muyo, that's right FANS (in Japan) wanted the original series to go on! Maybe.. just maybe we'll get a continue.... not

25:38 there was also starblazers which, apart from some censoring [tanks being piloted by robots, people escaping "in the nick of time"], stayed faithfull to the original plot of it parent series space battleship Yamato.

For such a "fan" of robotech, you start off the show by taking a dump on the min-mey attack? That wasn't designed to rally the troops, but to cause panic and confusion on the alien attackers! Careful w/ --Macross Plus-- buddy because in my opinion, it's the most MATURE series in the ENTIRE Macross(Canon)series that had GROWN ADULTS as the the mains w/ nary a sight of teen angst.
    +
In fact, the first series never went on! When Macross Plus came out, they ignored the original and went with the MOVIE as the starting point which followed by Macross 7, Macross ZERO (prequel to Movie but was thick of tree huggery) and Macross Frontier.
Scissor fun fun and faaags~~~ we know where you stand now.

Also; Japanese animation companies love inserting characters who are female in design but have male voice actors.. guess Japan don't have hang-ups you north american foreign devils have.

Maybe he had flashbacks to Robotech's dub of Minmei? That voice caused panic and confusion in me every time she opened her mouth, let alone when a song started. :p

I thought Macross was about giant robots fighting IN SPAAAACE!!! - not love triangles and stupid mushy stuff like romance... What a disappointment.
