Hey guys this game is abandonware, so you can get it at abandonia for free... it is really a great game.
Ah dude unless Virgin Interactive, Westwood Studios or who else owns the copyrights which btw do not expire for 50-70 years after it is published then it isn't abandoned.
Most such called abandonware is not abandoned nor is it legal to download and if the copyright owners decide to enforce the law then you will go to prison or face stiff fines.
It's not like you cannot buy the game on ebay or trade it to someone in it's disc form which you are authorized under copyright to do.
-
abandonware also refers to games that nobody cares about copyrightwise. Can you buy this from any distributor? no? then chances are that you won't be sued if you get this from an abandonware site.
I can only guess who owns the rights to this game since Westwood does not exist anymore, Westwood was under Virgin interactive when they made Dune2, well, no Virgin interactive around either. EA? they took Westwood under their wing before Westwoods closure.
Who ever owns the rights should make this game available via Steam or similar service like the old X-com games are. But until then just get this game from an abandonware site, it's fine.
-
08.28.2010 - 03:58 | GaussRiemannIn some cases however, the game is legal to download and the copyright owners actually declared it as freeware. Revolution for example, who were among the first, gave away "Beneath A Steel Sky" for free. I do not know about Dune 2, but EA themselves declared the first three Command & Conquer games as freeware, so at least the chances are good that Dune 2 is genuine abandonware.

That doesn't make sense to me. Any company, which could in fact be defunct at this point, isn't going to make any monies or royalties from Ebay trades.

Haven't played MoM yet myself, but people have said that they're very similar.

08.28.2010 - 02:15 | tootiredOkay the implication of the House Ordos ending is that they have the lizard eat the emperor since he becomes prey in a hunt hence the game they speak of. Sure it happens off screen but it is somewhat more evil then just being blasted.
Dune 2000 a sort of remake with live action was a much better game with better endings and well better overall.

-
08.28.2010 - 11:44 | Cameron WinterI should say not, seeing as the Harkonnens like doing stuff like enslaving people by poisoning them and making people serve them in return for the antidote to keep them alive for one more day

LoL, you wont get a fine for downloading something in good faith that is within good reason to be viewed as abandonware.
Do you really think people will bust down your door because you downloaded a 20 year old game file from a site telling you it was free even if it wasnt?
Dont really see the point in trying to scare people for stuff the copyright owners dont even give a shit about. Allowing or not caring about people downloading the age old Dune 2 dosent invalidate the ip license. Also, a lot of the time there is a big mess of license issues with some titles between the maker, going bust closed down etc, and the ip holder etc. Which makes its virtually impossible to actually build a case against anyone downloading a title with such issues. You can download Dune 2 if you want to try without any risk is my assessment.

It's not about scaring people off, it's about giving a damn that some people actually put time, money and effort into this game. Sure, if you download it, no one in the world will sue you. So yeah, it's really up to you to decide whether or not you can just grab anything you want to play without paying.
Personally, I take pride in actually owning dvds and games that I love and from a collector's point of view, it's really fun to track those gems down. But that's just my opinion.

Well, what about Bethesda games like ES: Arena and ES: Daggerfall? you can get those games for free from Bethesda:)
-
Nice episode, your shows usually rock, but let me just correct a few mistakes you did there:
The unit prices at the merchants guild change! you can get better deals from starport than factories!
It's cheaper to build concrete under your buildings than repair them, so you could say that it's useless to build concrete if you expect that your buildings won't take damage. But did you know that windtraps provide MORE energy at full health? so unless you want to build more windtraps than you really need, BUILD CONCRETE UNDER THEM.

Ah one of my all time favorites :)
I did also waste a LOT of time into this game. I beat it with all 3 factions, and according to your video I did it the hard way (never build another base) But I had luck with the missiles.
I also liked the Harkonnen ending the most. The other two just were too lame, the Harkonnen did the same thing I would have done to the Emperor after this Hell fighting against the other 2 houses and himself.

WOW! Man that is GREAT! SInce I live in Europe, I never had a video game console at home, so I started playing video games on my PC. Seriously, Dune II, Prince of Persia and The Lost Vikings were the first games I ever played. I have a nostalgic feeling watching this episode. Dune II kicks ass.
@Fracassi - Isn't Wasteland the game that influenced the Fallout series? If so, it's got to be great!

Yeah, it's not like europe was console-free. But I do see a pattern in that. People add the words "since I'm European" or a variety of it and expect it to make sense. It doesn't. Stop thinking you are an exception to the rules or something special because you are European. And since I'm European, I know we're not.

08.28.2010 - 05:00 | LiosMan, I so miss Westwood. Dune and C&C95 were my iconic childhood RTS games, and EA had to go and devour the latter.
-
08.28.2010 - 05:21 | NightfishHm, doesn't quite fit the "Until we win" theme, seeing how those are usually hard games and I had no problem beating dune 2, even when I was just a little kid, but it's a great game, especially for it's time, no denying that.
Erm, you're wrong on a few things, too. Spice does not truly run out. When you harvest enough spice, spice blooms will occur. They look like little hills and if you shoot them, they explode and there's a bit more spice to be harvested. I don't think those ever stop spawning.
Heavy Soldiers aren't that bad to kill sandworms, btw. Or you could just feed the worm 3 trikes, that works too.
You seriously underestimate the fremen, too... I do remember them doing some decent damage. Takes a bit of skill to use them so that they don't immidiately get hammered.
Another thing you might want to mention is that the ordos can easily deal with devastators with their special rocket launcher as you can just self destruct the devastators.
Concrete slab useless? Wtf... for one you can use that to expand your territory, and place turrets where you really want and without concrete your buildings are at half life when dropped...

Thanks, Mr Kat! Or may I call you Lord?
That was a real blast from the past. I remember playing this when it was brand new. I was about 17, and hunkered over a friend's compy all night with headphones on. I was absolutely terrible at the game - I always need to cheat RTSs to win - but I do remember the mood of the game was awesome. It really felt like I was the guy in the command bunker, listening to tinny radio messages from the line units and the Mentat voice and struggling to control a battlefield full of crazy. Great days.
Anyways. I love your UWW posts. May you never lose!

What has that do do with Europe?
Video Game Console where big in europe too.
Yeah, eventually, but it took some time for them to be available. The NES for example too quite a while to be distributed, if I remember correctly, the SNES was already out when consoles began making their way into Europe (or Spain at least), so for those of us old enough to have known a pre-SNES world, consoles took a while to drop by.

Ah just because something is said to be abandonware doesn't mean it is. Lots of pirated material wound up at abandonware sites hence why the old rings got shut down and this is still a problem today. There is a site called gog.com that legally sells a lot of old pc games that have been recoded to work on xp and vista so what you are paying for is someone reprogramming these old games to work flawlessly or nearly flawlessly on modern pcs instead of you not being able to play the games. So yeah there is a market for old pc games.

Yeah he seems to miss some things. I wonder if he played dune 2000 or emperor battle for dune. Fremen in emperor were actually fantastic since they had the sound weapons and could ride meaning control the sandworms as weapons.

GOG.com doesn't just take any old game to put up on their site. They have to work out something with the company that has the rights to those games.
I felt I had to point this out, so that people wouldn't get false hopes that a game whose owners aren't around anymore would show up on a site like GOG.com.
