No, actually this one was featured in Nintendo Power! I will never forget how excited I used to get when my new issue arrived in the mail each month. That subscription surely earned me some of my earliest friends.

But this game was tough, regardless. I personally didn't like it enough to get very far. I loved the original Zelda, and this was such a far cry from it that it kind of turned me off. I played it again on an emulator when I got to college, and realized it's actually pretty enjoyable for what it is. But for me, the embodyment of Zelda games lies within the intricate dungeon puzzles and Link's ever-growing (and inexplicably large) bag of items. Since these elements were absent in this game, it always felt segregate from the series. No surprise that they immediately returned to the standard formula for A Link to the Past. And, man did that game kick ass...

Nice work as always.

Great movie! I could never beat this game.

Me either, playing it as a kid it was almost impossible.

Have you ever played a game that was just so damn hard that you didn't beat it?

Wow, this went up early.

This game was always pretty rough, and unforgiving... but hated for all the wrong reasons. Easily NOT my fav of the Zelda series, but hardly a trash game.

Kudos on the victory, but this was probably child's play for you.

Great review, though I must admit I could never get through some of the levels, which resulted in me quitting and forgetting it existed. I'm not sure if I want to try and see if I can beat it now though, too many bad memories.

I always liked this Zelda game because of it's difficulty. I remember getting the port on the GBA years ago, and got all the way through it, but had trouble killing shadow Link. I did remember about some trick of crouching and stabbing, but I guess I wasn't doing it right.

Ha, ha this game was a pain, but fun, it may be the black sheep, but it's also so satsfying when you beat it.

Also on a note. I am a Zelda Fanboy and I don't know why so many other fanboys have problems with this game. It's not like the Zelda Forumla was set into stone at that point and it did keep parts of that formula.

I just think it's a good game, I mean it could've been worse guys. Could've been the fail that Zelda had with CDI.
• Gozar

I've been playing Zelda since the release of the first game and your right. Those guys don't have a right to complain about the second game. Zelda II was just rediculously hard though back in the day. It was also double hard because it was an entirely new format for the game so what you did in the previous game you kind of had to forget.

• Dundore77
despite this game being really different its one of my favorite zelda games though i never got around to beating it.
• poisontongue
For all the crap Z2 gets, it really isn't a bad game. I think it speaks to the strength of the franchise that two different styles can make for games this good... kind of reminds me of all the hate heaped on Wind Waker simply for its graphical choice, which made for an utterly stupid "controversy". There was nothing wrong with that style. Can imagine how rabid the fanboys would get over a true core reinvention.

Anyways, I'd like to see Z2-style make a comeback parallel alongside the regular series.
• NowYouDie  - Ah yes...
The notorious Wind Waker haters. I don't understand why they hated the cel-shaded style of the game. It gets even funnier a few years later, when they think that Twilight Princess is too "mature" looking! Make up your freaking mind!

I have to admit, I didn't really like WW, but not because of the graphics. I'm just not a fan of the 3D Zelda games. I've bought and played them all, but could never get into any of them. The overhead, 2D Zelda games will always be my favourites. Z2 is one of my favourites, second only to Ages and Seasons. I never beat it, but that's okay.

GJ and otsu as always, LordKat!
• MPSolo
Ha ha, a game I've beaten! Albeit a couple years after I initially started playing it, but still. Remarkably, for all the suffering this game put me through, I beat the final boss in one try.
• George
I know Nintendo will never make another Zelda like this, that always gave Zelda 2 a special feeling. I wish they would give Zelda games an optional difficulty setting, though, they're all good, but most are too easy, with this, and Zelda 1 being the acceptions.

I still recommend F-Zero GX, I'd send it to you myself if I had the money.
• Nayue

Zelda 1 does have an alternate difficulty setting. It's called F-you mode. Just input the name "ZELDA" or beat the game once. There, hard mode. I mean, it's not that hard, but it's harder than Zelda 2.

Allow me give a tip to anyone who EVER decides to play this game. Jump-stab the knights. The knights will NEVER block a jump-stab. Simply jump, attack, and land with your sword outstretched on their heads. It hits them every, single, time. It even works about 75% of the time on the lizalfos. Never works on the skeletos, but they only block high anyway. I don't see why you didn't use this little trick, LordKat, when you were fine using the hide-in-the-corner trick on Dark Link. As a matter of fact, it's the actual intended way to kill Dark Link, though it's much more of a decent fight with him than the knights.
• TuKy  - Until We Win, turned into a Walkthroug show?
Is this a Walkthrough show or a show showing how difficult and how desesperated was to you to beat the game?

I really loved your show, the early episodes, but recently you simply lost touch and started to do walkthrough episodes.

I don't really wanna know how to beat Zelda 2, there are a lot of FAQs on the internet, and I don't want to see footage of you playing it without nothing appealing to the eye or some joke rolling. I want to see why you suffered and laugh. What i saw was you fast explaning how to beat the game poorly, it was very uninteresting like the previus episodes.

PLEASE LORDKAT, review your show, watch your early episodes and see that the show turned to bad. I really miss what Ultil We Win used to be.

I more or less concur. I realize that you haven't covered an RPG-like game before, but it's not like you mapped out the entire Clinger-Winger when you did Battletoads. Nearly half this episode was "go left, go right, drop down, go left two panels, take the elevator up, go right..."
I want to know what it was like to beat a difficult game. I want to know about the little tricks to controlling your character, the nastier enemies and how to get by them, the more creative and characteristic elements of the dungeons (bottomless pits in 6, how to beat those darn knights, walk-through walls, etc.).
I want to hear about leveling up sword, life, and magic, about which you feel is most important, about P-bags and good places to power-level.
I want, first and foremost, for your walkthroughs to convey the experience of playing a hard/broken/so- unbelievably-cheesy-it's- amazing game. When your primary goal is the walkthrough itself, especially a walkthrough of mazes, your show dies.
• Zyrox
Yeah, I always used little tricks to help me with this game (like the jump-stab trick on knights or turning into a fairy to go through locked doors). The boss fights in Zelda II were never really that hard, except for Thunderbird, who is extremely impossible (I recommend using thunder, shield, and jump, though your magic level has to be 8 to do that)

It took me forever to beat this game though. "Several days" is really inaccurate for your first time through. It took me a full school year (180 days) to finally beat this game.

The worst part is the middle, after you beat the first few dungeons and you're forced to leveling up. It takes forever. Another bad part is getting to the Great Palace. It's just an endurance round. Get there without running out of lives. Luckily, if you get a game over in the Great Palace, you'll start there too.

Now for the actual video, I thought it was okay, though the footage didn't exactly go along with your advice. When you gave direction you often used clips of you fighting a knight, or the boss (and I usually thought that the image was going faster than the audio). I thought it would've been easier for others to understand what to do if you gave more of a visualization other than just fighting a knight. The Great Palace especially, as that place is a labyrinth. You should've also mentioned the trick where you can go through locked doors as a fairy.

I've always felt this game was sorely underrated...It was hard when I got it for the NES but I played it..and enjoyed it. Seeing as how I never beat it, it was kool seeing the ending.

Man, I never realized how long that game actually was. I remember playing it a long, long time ago but never got into the change of style. From hearing your UWW, it sounds like a Hydlide in the Zelda universe.

Good walkthrough, I am a huge Zelda fan but I've never beaten it. I'm going to share this with a couple of friends, and I might go for a completion of it this summer.

And off topic, but has there been someone who just comes along and rates down comments on every video these last few days? Wth?

I've noticed it, too. I like to think it's either a very cowardly troll who's too afraid to outright say anything, or someone who wanted first post, and is mad at every poster above him. (What I oft refer to as a "butthurt-firstie")

What do you mean? Didn't you see his other videos? Basically they're all kinda like walkthroughs where he goes through the game, gives helpful hints, and ends up beating the boss. He does more than just beat it, he shows you what it's like and helps out. He is funny sometimes, but that's not the main premise of the show, is to make you laugh, but to help you beat the game.

I still like this game. Yeah it's very different from the other titles, but there were only 2 when it came out. I beat it when I was a kid, though, so to me that doesn't make it too difficult.

As others mentioned, I'm surprised you didn't mention the "jump and stab" technique for fighting knights.

Cutting through the game like you did does make it go faster, but kills the adventure. If you've already found what they want, it's not much of a quest.

Personally, I don't think this game was best suited for UWW. Now, take me thru Double Dragon III or Karate Kid...that's an UWW.

I've noticed it too...down-votes on comments that aren't even negative or controversial. The thing about TGWTG is once ONE person does it...the sheep follow the herd and do it too..even when it's not deserving. :S

Well, I'll bet this was a nice reprieve after all the bad difficult games you've been playing as of late.

Excellent video, and one that I am so glad to see... I never managed to get passed the third dungeon in this game when I was a kid, and even to this day, as an adult, I still can't get past the fourth, so thank you for helping me to conquer one of the hardest games of my childhood, lol.

BTW, if you're interested in a game that's hard but also awesome, I was totally recommend Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose for the SNES. It's an awesome game, but VERY hard.
• mhayes86
Regardless of how much people bash this game, I loved it, and still do to this day. My mother was a pro at it when I was a kid and finished it a few times. It took me MANY years to finally manage finishing it for myself, and I actually finished it again recently.

I would actually like to see another Zelda game using a similar formula as Zelda II, being a bit more RPG oriented.

The only thing I did not like about this game was its level cap at 8-8-8. It kept the difficulty of the game in check, and there are players who challenge themselves with low level runs, but as a kid I would have liked to have stood a better chance against some enemies... especially those annoying blue jumping/daggar throwing things. UGH!

Very good walkthrough here. Yeah, Zelda 2 is a tricky one to beat.

One tip I'll have that wasn't mentioned here: 1-Up Dolls. Yes, they are in the game. Yes, they do give you extra lives.

Do NOT go for them until you're ready to fight the final boss.

Believe me, you do NOT want to go all the way from where Zelda is sleeping to the final dungeon so close upon completion. Plus, they'll help you against Thunderbird where you'll die...a lot.

Awesome. I've never beaten the last palace, but I don't think I ever had that key to open all doors. I think there is a lot of innuendo in the game. Seriously every time Link needs his health refilled he goes into a girl's house and shuts the door. He getting sexed. Even the last scene with Zelda was racy, with the curtain coming down.
• Ghis  - Whoa!
avatar
What a coincidence! I was playing this game while I waited for today's new videos! XD

And yeah, I admit it's a pretty challenging game to finish on the first run (took me 18 years to beat it!). But once you've beat it once, you can restart from the start with all the levels and spells you had when you first finished it. Suddenly, things aren't so complicated! XD Though it's still gets chellenging once you reach the 4th or 5th castle.
