03.06.2010 - 23:01 | TalkingBananaHow you manage to complete all of these impossible games is a mystery to me. Meh, maybe I'm just getting old and slow.

03.06.2010 - 23:17 | mindlessI used to love this game as a kid, but was never able to beat it, good to see someone beat it
-
03.06.2010 - 23:24 | vid3oman64Whoa, what was up with the captured video? Something wrong with the game or the capture card?
Regardless.. yeah, another game that can go fuck itself. Seriously, I would just give the fuck up on a game half this ridiculous.

I'm guessing Marcus is going to have a really long wait. Seeing how just about anyone can beat the first Contra game. Just a little practice even without using the 30 lives cheat.
Why was that cart so glitchy? Did you drop your NES before playing this game or something? I tend to clean my carts and control deck if I ever see glitches like that.
Many of those spaces to stand on were half the width of your character. And those spikes were so close. That games environment is why allot of people insist on the Game Genie having Walk Through Walls codes.
So whats up next?

It's odd that it's called Kiwi Kraze on the US NES as it's called The New Zealand Story on all other formats and other NES regions.
Bizzare!
But you should look at the Mega Drive version sometime as it's actually the sequel to The NewZealand Story, despite it still being called The NewZealand Story :S
-
03.07.2010 - 01:42 | Cid_the_DuckProbably because most Americans don't know what or where New Zealand is, sadly. (Although, now it can be called ''that place they filmed Lord of the Rings at'')

Larry are you trying to build up to an AVGN Continuity rant or just offering confusion over corporate idiocy?
Why call a sequel the same thing only having it on a different system?
That would be like if Rocky 1 were only released on Film reels and Rocky II were only released on Betamax then Rocky III only on VHS with IV on Laser disc and so on but calling all the movies only Rocky. It just doesn't work that way!
Edit: Missed a Roman numeral.

03.07.2010 - 02:01 | TrencherThis was pretty easy on the Amiga. Great review.

I loved the arcade version of this game, despite it being hellish.
Haven't played the NES version, but on the arcades there were hidden warp gates that could potentially send you to any level in the world you were playing, including previous levels. So you could literally go around in circles.
Vehicles use in the game was fun, and the UFO kicked ass (It was controlled with the stick directly, instead of needing to tap the jump button, and had an integrated laser beam), and I loved how the Kiwi itself could fly if you tapped jump fast enough!

03.08.2010 - 13:15 | aozgoloThere's a reason they call it "Nintendo Hard" ;)
As for how he beats these games, I would presume, though due to the potential legal issues surrounding it, that he uses an emulator with state saves which allows you to save anywhere (despite the cartridge versions not allowing this).
-
A trick to save you a lot of grief: fire the water spit weapon when you are peaking out of the water to replenish your oxygen faster. A lot of "no-go" paths should open up as well.
That you apparently beat the game without it is pretty hardcore.

03.08.2010 - 13:17 | aozgoloI thought originally he was reviewing a game with Taz (The Tazmanian Devil) which I believe was a 3D worldrunner clone where you collected Kiwis, but I never played it so I can't remember the exact name.

Had The New Zealand Story on my old Atari ST.. Imagine haveing to play this with a joystick, having to push forward in order to jump.. Wow it was hard. Surprised though that you didnt show the death animation from those underwater grabber thingies (that looked way scarier on the atari with veins and stuff on em), it looked pretty gruesome!
I really enjoy UWW dude, keep up the great work!
