11.21.2009 - 01:17 | squareandrareUWW is definitely the most under-appreciated series on TGWTG.com. Awesome videos, keep it up, LordKat.

I actually had a copy of this game. I had it for about 6 years (age 6 to 12) and never figured out how to play the damn thing. Now I know why. It makes no friggin sense.

This is a terrible game. I'm a pretty open minded gamer really. I enjoyed Deadly Towers for a bit until I had a few games go to pot on me. Heck, I even like Silver Surfer. But this game is just miserable thanks to the stupid damage system. Ugh. You'd think that in the five years it took to get to the US they could have evened that out a bit. Instead we got a game that was almost as bad - Super Hydlide.

And LordKat did defeat the stinky dragon and saved the fair princess, who did then say, "Thank you, but our princess is in another castle. So sorry, but f#@k off!"
And LordKat did grow angry, and took the Dark Sword of Chaos for himself to rule the world (you know, just for spite.)
And then the Nostalgia Critic did appear, and he spoketh, "LordKat, the hell are you doing? You're gonna get all bent out of shape just 'cause some 8-bit bimbo played a practical joke on you? Get real!"
And LordKat thus spoketh, "Yeah, but I worked so damn hard to save her, and she made fun of me even though it took me thousands of continues to beat that badguy, and--"
And LordKat did grow ashamed, and did go and cry on the Nostalgia Critic's shoulder like a little girl. And then the Nostalgia Critic did pick him up and toss him down the Crack of Doom, and he sayeth, "HA, HA! I didn't come here to make you sorry; I only want the bodacious babe. See ya, sucker!"

there have been SEQUELS! *dun dun DUUUUUUN*
granted the second game wasn't released outside of Japan, but the third one was in a way, as Super Hydlide on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.
And then there was Virtual Hydlide on the Saturn, pretty much a remake of the first one far as i know
Anyway, great vids, i enjoy the UWW series very much!

Arg! Hydlide. Worst NES game I owned. Good review, though. You gave that game far more credit that I felt it deserved and reviewed it well. I liked the picture in picture and the cutout pics of the game systems. Your editing work seems to be improving.
The music, on the other hand. I think your music was both harder and louder than needed for the tone of the video and distracted from you dialog. It's probably better than Hydlide's endless chiming, but perhaps something less invasive next time?

11.21.2009 - 08:27 | Codiak723I remember this one. My cousin had it back in our NES days. I hated it then, I hate it now.
-
11.21.2009 - 09:59 | slayrideI never understood Hydlide, until after I had defeated Y's Book I and II on TurboGraphx CD, which is essentially Hydlide improved in every way, less difficult, great music and sound, anime cutscenes, and cool story. I went back to my copy of Hydlide and played it UWW style with the skills I learned from Y's and beat it. One of the final few NES games I defeated (The others being The Bard's Tale, Faxandu, and Might and Magic was the last one) before moving onto the 16 bit gaming era completely.

11.21.2009 - 19:59 | OgawaBurukkuHad to stop watching because there was awesome metal music in the background, and I realized halfway through I hadn't heard a word you'd said after it started playing.
Love metal, I really do, but for anytime you're talking it's best to either have dinky game music or silence.
