10.31.2009 - 05:02 | TekkenxerYeah its illegal in then and its still illegal until today. I know coz I live in Japan. I kinda envy the USA for having to rent a game first before they buy it. Here in Japan, you buy a game, you hope for the best. Thank God for free Demos of today. And speaking of Demo's. God of War 3 demo is out now and MGS Peace Walker Demo part 2 is also out now.

10.31.2009 - 01:23 | BlacksmithYou know, for a game that looks unbelievably painful to play through, there's a lot of good things to be said about it. The graphics look awesome, the gameplay is incredibly varied, and there are many neat-looking elements thrown in that are pretty innovative for an 8-bit game. Too bad I'm left with no desire to actually play it. Excellent review and commentary on the game, LordKat, although I wished you'd shown more corresponding game footage while you were talking about specific portions.

This video sure makes me nostalgic. I know a lot of viewers are going to say I'm full of crap, but I was able to beat this game over and over again back in the day. You see, I played the game so many times, I hardwired all the moves I had to do right into my brain. It took a little time and a lot of tries, of course, but once I played it enough times, I could beat it time and again.
Of course, I also had Nintendo Power to help me. The magazine had extensive coverage of the game, and without it beating the game would have been much more difficult.
It's true, I swear it! Let the hate mail begin!

Holy shit, I had heard battletoads was hard, but I had no idea...I wasn't really a NES or SNES (whos how much I know about this game) player, I'm more of the playstation generation, but man am I glad I wasn't around to play this shit.
You are a god of gaming and you have perseverance rivaling that of a fucking rhino on every steroid know to man, even if you are somewhat of a masochist :P
Nice review, was very entertaining and I learned to stay the fuck away from battletoads!

10.31.2009 - 03:53 | yakraIv'e beat this game about five times. Started out when I was about three years old (18 now) and could only play it for one month every summer in our summerhouse in Spain. As a kid, you don't have fast enough reflexes to make it through stage 3. Finished it for the first time when I was 16 and now it's actually a piece of cake, because I have memorized every single objekt in this game.
My record in multiplayer with my cousin is stage 9. If there is any way to play this game online I would gladly try to beat it in two player mode! ;)
-
10.31.2009 - 03:55 | AzazelloI must've been a really masochistic kid or something, but I remember playing this game a lot back in the day and while it was hard, it didn't strike me as "throwing my controller to the wall" - hard, like some others. I even finished it, eventually.
For me the hardest part was level 11, where you race away from the portal that was following you - man, was I stuck on that one for ages.

Im starting to love this segment here. Keep it up man. Its been 20 years and I just beaten Battletoads on my clunky NES2 and I feel so glad to have FINALLY beaten it then I saw this segment here. Its really like going back to the days where you get so frustrated on beating this game for many many many times.

10.31.2009 - 05:20 | grimfolseYou're lucky you didn't have a 2nd player. I read that there's a glitch that makes Clinger Winger impossible if there's a player 2. That might have driven you to do something...drastic.

10.31.2009 - 05:36 | ILikesToWootI found level 4, 6, 7, and 11, to be pretty easy. Especially 11, thats by far the easiest level in the game, which is odd considering that most people consider it to be the hardest. All because of one trick, pausing on the turns, oh yes, with this you can do the main part of the stage every time with ease. The end of level 5 was BULLSHIT, for obvious reasons. Level 10 is the hardest level in the game just because of that final race, knowing how to do it isn't nearly enough to cut it, although the boss is a joke. Also in level 7 on the part with the rockets if you stay on the very bottom of the screen the rockets going up won't hurt you. I bet you wish you had known this while playing :P
My hats off to you sir, you are one of few who can say to their children that they had conquered the mighty battletoads without the aid of warps (or 5 lives code?).

I'm impressed! Not only because you've beat the game, but also because I thought you were pretty funny. :)
I haven't seen your other videos, but if I can criticize one thing about this one though, it's that I thought you showed yourself a bit too much compared to game footage.
Except for that, good job! I'll be coming back for more. ^_^

10.31.2009 - 09:38 | xenxanderI owned this game back in the day - never got past the water stage actually.
Think you can do "Ghosts and Goblins" for NES, next? That game was beyond brutal. At least in Battletoads I had a "chance". But Ghost and Goblins doesn't even use lube... *ehem*.
(edit)
and I agree, a bit more game footage is required to keep viewers more interested. We as viewers would love to see how you got through some stages while you speak about them. Not to say showing 'you' is bad; there's a balance point.

10.31.2009 - 10:17 | hikari802Battletoads... I remember having this game on the NES way back in the day. I can remember the utter jubilation I found when beating level THREE for the first time. You didn't even TOUCH on the hardest part of that stage. The segments where you have to jump into the floor and HOPE you're in the right location for the jump platform to pop you back onto the track. Or the wall segment where it gives you one flash for each of the walls, and you have to memorize the pattern, AND have pixel-perfect reactions AND pixel-perfect positioning.
I never made it past the snake level. Never.
My hat goes off to you, good sir, for doing the impossible. You have my utmost respect for this feat.

I think the problem most of us had with this game was it was marketed as a beat em up and was 95% platforming and racing. This was at a time when everyone was trying to duplicate the success of TMNT. And as inconsistent as the turtles games were, at least they weren't exercises in pure torture like this game. I remember Nintendo Power having a walkthrough of the entire game in one of it's standard monthly issues.

My only real complaint is that at multiple parts in the video I found myself screaming at the screen, "SHOW US WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!"
I just found that there was a lot of face time, some levels almost completly described in front of the camera. While I'll almost always say that face time is a good thing, you REALLY need to bring up the game screen when you are trying to describe a difficult game mechanic. Especially for a game like Battletoads that really needs to be seen to understand the difficulty.
Other than that, awesome.
