02.27.2010 - 00:46 | TamLinYou know, if any of those congresspeople had actually sat down to play Night Trap and seen how goofy and campy it was, this whole thing would have blown over in less than a week. I still shake my head at the flap over the supposed "sexual content" in this game; you see more T&A in a Victoria's Secret ad.
I never knew this game was filmed in '87; that explains a LOT. Night Trap isn't long on gameplay and the movie elements wear thin pretty fast too, but it's still good fun in a "So bad it's good" kind of way, much like the late-night cable movies it emulates.

I never played the game but I do remember the controversy that surrounded it because obviously, all the narrow-minded interest groups and politicians haven't played it either. But at least I knew more about the game than they did!
They thought it was a game where you kidnap women and rape or kill them or whatever, but the game had no rape scene and you are only there to protect the people. Ignorant dumbasses...

Also, you're specifically talking about the games that caused the ratings/censorship system being put in place for video games IN THE US! You must've heard the news that the UK had a certification system in place for video games since 1984, although the UK also saw much less controversy. The first video game to be banned in the UK was Chiller, and with good reason, it's disgusting.

I love Night Trap...it's so cheesy, but even the sounds of the crickets outside make me go into nostalgic overdrive.
Just to point out, that wasn't the Mega CD version shown, it was either 3DO or PC, the Mega CD video is worse quality and a smaller window. That adds to the charm though, makes it seem more like terrible security camera footage.
This game was rated as a 15 in the UK - despite zero swearing, no gore and it's cheesy tone. Ridiculous over-reaction to the game by politicians, and that continues now.

Yeah, this port is the 3DO version not not the SEGA CD/MEGA CD version. That port looks alot more grainy.
Night Trap isn't scary at all noir was in 1993. It's really weird and was actaully part of a scrapped 16-bit VHS console called Radio Shack/Hasbro NEMO( A VHS console? Yup. It was real and was suppossed to have launched in 1988.) In 1992 SEGA of America, brought all of the NEMO's software trademarks and most of the FMV titles for it.

I can tell you why the politicians took umbrage at this game. It's because Nintendo took the Sega CD version and made a carefully edited video tape and sent it to key politicians. You have to remember how brutal the game wars were back then. I love Nintendo's games but man, they could play dirty when they had to. It was an all an attempt to depict Sega as a company that allowed kids to play brutal games.
The politicians saw the video and actually claimed that you were supposed to kill women in the game. It wasn't just Night Trap, there was a lot of controversy over the original Mortal Kombat too.
After the controversy died down and the ESRB was created, Nintendo allowed Acclaim to publish an uncensored version of Mortal Kombat II which proves they aren't opposed to gore so long as they profit from it.
