• Apathetic One  - Thank you.
GuruLarry, you're awesome...you continue to bring obscure games to my attention and further broaden my overall knowledge of the medium. I thank you, from California/Vancouver.

Dude, both the entirety to California and Vancouver got together just to write a comment on your video. Good for you!

Seems fun! I wonder where I would begin looking for that remake...

That game would have me screaming in frustration for hours...and that's a good thing.

I'm from the USA and I remember playing the crap out of that game back in grade school. Somehow my grandpa got a copy for his Commmodore 64. I'd always get stuck in the same parts (of course I had nightmares about the f'in The Banyan Tree). There were some insanely difficult rooms that required impeccable timing, but I'd keep coming back for the addictive gameplay and kickass music: If I were a rich man...

I actually downloaded the remake a few years ago and I finally mastered The Banyan Tree (I don't know if they made it easier or if my hand-to-eye coordination is better). I ended up beating the game and it was quite the retro flashback.

Is that actually the background music for this game? Isn't that "If I were a Rich man" From Fiddler on the roof? Or was that just added in after o_O

That is the music to the game!

It's actually the music of the remake though as the original Spectrum's is all buzzy and would be annoying to listen to in a video.

The remake music sounds beautiful.
• NegaJoe  - Looks familiar............

I don't know why (maybe it's just the name of the game) but this reminds me of Leisure Suit Larry, minus the sexy polygons.

2:34- I thought when giant feet in England stomped you it made a farting noise.

Great show, Larry. I want to play this game now.

How come they can't make an MMO like that for Castlevania?
• Guru Larry
avatar
I dont' see why they couldn't.

Especially something like Symphony of the night with a huge castle to explore, that'd be awesome.

Why not suggest it on some fan sites?

Another game that non-british have not even heard of before this.

I wish you'd mentioned that Jet Set Willy is actually a sequel to one of the greatest 80's platformers - Manic Miner (you can play a pretty faithful yet unfortunately soundless Flash remake here - http:// www.darnkitty.com/manic/ , or a bit more polished Windows version here: http:// retrospec.sgn.net/game- links.php?link=mm but watch out kids, in the old days video games were HARD). The 'stories' are also connected - in the first one, Willy searches for treasure in an ancient mine, and ultimately gets rich so he can buy a huge mansion, throw a big party and get harassed by a housekeeper who will not let him go to bed before cleaning up the house (btw, isn't that what SHE is payed to do??) in the sequel.

I preferred MM since that game was actually beatable (eventually). In addition to being punishing as hell, JSW on C64 was shipped with a bug that made the game unfinishable - entering a room called 'The Attic' effectively corrupted the game. Frustrating, that. I also preferred the more constrained level structure in Manic Miner as opposed to free-roaming Jet Set Willy gameplay.

But still, thanks for briefly bringing back this old bit of nostalgia.

P.S. This game is hardly 'obscure'. This and Manic Miner were very popular back in the days.

A respectable opener for what has become a definitive series on obscure gaming from a British perspective. :)

If that was what I'd have to go home to, I'd get a divorce and an apartment posthaste.

How come you didn't mention the fact that the game was actually impossible to beat considering at one point in the game you are forced to jump down to the next room and land on a ledge but since you aren't able to move while falling it meant you couldnt catch the ledge. IIRC after my own research into this game, during it's original run only 2 people actually completed it. They had to hack the code and put the ledge alot closer (i think).

Anyway good vid guys!

The crushing foot looks like that of the Monty Pythons. Somehow the cycle is complete...

You know, despite never having played this, I couldn't help but feel the setup, layout and... well, not the PREMISE, but the general feel of the game was still very familiar to me.

Then I remembered.

So with the Addams Family SNES (and NES/Master System) games, the U.S. kinda did get a very loosely connected version. More of a throwback, really. We just didn't know what it was.

Well that was made in Britain too, so chances are they were influenced!

But I loved that game, especially the SNES version, so much so I went out and imported the US version.
