Great review Dena. It's funny you talk about Halle Berry because just recently I was thinking, "Hmm I haven't seen anything from her in a long time." Seems her acting career has kinda fizzled out, which is a shame I think. She's not one of my favorite actresses but I still generally enjoyed her in what movies I remember her from.

When Patience is acting so full of herself, I think what they were TRYING to go for was how cats seem to act rather vain, but naturally they didn't pull it off as well as they had hoped.

The way she's afraid of the rain is a bit overkill; some cats actually don't mind water as much as others. One of my cats, Monkey, actually likes playing in the shower, just sort of pawing at the little puddles of water. (It's so cute!)
Besides, Patience's reaction is a little more suited for the Wicked Witch of the West; it's not like Patience is going to melt.

On that note about how "Jurassic Park" had a smaller budget and used puppets and animatronics, I actually didn't realize that puppets were slightly cheaper than CGI. (Because movies nowadays use it so much I always thought CG was cheaper. Shows what I know about film production. :P)

Regarding that footage from the Razzies, as bad as this movie is, Halle Berry is still awesome! What a class-act.

I think I said it earler - but I really liked the movie. Why? Because of the exact same reasons, you said. Because the characters are arche-types, but, honestly, I didn`t care much.

I thought, it was relatively entertaining, and it was at least better then "the incredible Hulk". Seriously - a guy, turning in a big green monster, when he is angry? Yeah, right.

Awesome! :D You completely nailed so much things wrong in this movie - but at the same time admitted there are good elements in it that could have been great if it was in the right directing hands. :) That is why I think you're a true reviewer. ^^

It's kinda funny how people hate Catwoman here being a Mary Sue character... but, no one complains about things like that in Kill Bill or Hellsing. :P OH NO - THEY are SO flawless. XP LOL

I guess that has less to do with them being Mary Sues more like they are awesome characters.

Also, it's mostly because in films like Catwoman or Resident Evil for that case, the hero makes the rest of the characters look like a bunch of incompetent morons. Heroes and villains alike.

    Worst movie ever.

    Good review though ^_^

Swooshing makes the movie look like it has failed.

I had forgotten just how bad Halle Berry's 'purring' or whatever she was trying to do was when playing Catwoman. The dialogue is awful, yeah, but she's even more cringey than I remember! She was 'better' playing Patience when she was pathetic and drippy. Her Razzie acceptance speech seemed to be "It wasn't my fault, everyone else is to blame!", but maybe I'm just biased because I've never liked her. Whoever played Patience, they'd have to do a lot to make her a likeable character. As you point out, she's pathetic, she's dumb, and she can be a total bitch like the way she was to that guy who asked if she was OK after she landed in front of his car. And this is meant to be the heroine.

I agree with you entirely about Laurel, she is one of the more redeeming things about this film. I also sympathised and sided with with her more than I did Patience, it says something if you end up cheering on the villain at the end. The way she set Patience up was pretty good, and Sharon Stone at least seemed to be trying. Laurel still isn't the greatest character ever or anything, but she's one that could have worked well with a better script.

I had no idea that they did so much merchandise for this film or that they spent so much money on it. It is a bit of a fail all round. This was a great, detailed review though.

If you're going to judge her speech, watch the whole thing--I cut it down to about 1/4 of its original length. It's pretty easy to find on YouTube.

It's a roast of everyone involved with the movie, including herself, since she makes fun of her own performance twice, not to mention making fun of how she acted when she won her Oscar. She's definitely taking some of the blame--some of it might be in a "See, it wasn't all my fault!" way, but it's clearly not meant to be taken seriously.

She also had Alex Borstein come out with her at one point--pretty sure that wouldn't happen if she was just throwing everyone else under the bus.
  • Magmabear
It takes guts to admit when you've created something terrible, and after seeing Halle Berry's speech in the Razzies I can say only this:

    *stands up and starts clapping*

Bravo, miss Berry. You have earned my respect regardless of any film that you play in. Godspeed to you, and may you live with a full and happy life.

I saw the new Dark Knight Rises trailer last, and have watched it so much since then. It would seem that Hathaway has nailed the part, from what I've seen.

When the CGI dinosaurs look more convincing and real than CGI cats, you have to wonder why they did not use real cats, when they could not do better CGI effects?

I love bad movies but usually high budget bad movies don't work for me. They have ok acting and style but are usually just boring. I tried to watch this movie and made it about half way before I quit. It is so bad

    Hey Dena!

I'm repeating myself, but I really love your reviewing style. I love how analytic you get, and how you take the time to explain your point of view, and to demonstrate why a film fails. Keep up the good work! :)

As for this "Catwoman" movie, it just feels utterly pretentious to me, as if those in charge were absolutely sure they had THE PERFECT recipe for succes, and they were going to permit us to partake in their glory in viewing their creation. Most ironical, as they had absolutely no understanding of who was going to be their public, and had seemingly no respect for the fans (or the Catwoman lore, for that matter).

As for me, I'm absolutely fed up with the clichéed "hyper-sexualized-badass" female character. Acting bitchy does not make a character strong, it makes her, well... bitchy! And making your female character soooooo confident and flawless will not make her strong and endearing, but will make her annoying and cocky. I think people love the Catwoman character because she is dimentional. Yes, she is strong, confident and independant, but she is also aware of walking a thin line between "good" and "evil", and that is what makes her compelling. Even her portrayal as being deranged (like in Batman returns) makes her a complete character, because her quest for revenge is then seen as a tragic and desperate act, whilst in this film it is nothing but a selfish vendetta (trying to hide itself behind the fact that "beau-line is dangerous").

Well, enough rambling on my part. Thanks again for the awesome review!
  • NumberJenn  - Great Review!
Part one of this was actually the first time I saw one of your videos but i was actually really looking forward to part two and will definietly check out your next stuff (especially if all of your reviews are about things you seem to care about as much as this one). ^-^

    Ah this movie.

Remember watching it with friends and just wondering how the makeup that "causes you skin to disintergrate if you stop using it" made it past whatever the American equivilent of trading standards is. It makes no sense as to WHY the company, actively knowing it has a dangerous product on their hands, would try to push it through.

Hell the lawsuits alone after the side effects came out would probably be enough to bankrupt the company let alone the negative press and the federal investigation as to how this unsafe product made it to the market.

We actually came up with better plotlines that while as cliched as all hell:

    1) It was an experiment to make soldiers literally bullet proof but the above said side effects caused the goverment to pull out and take back all their funding, meaning unless the company just shipped the thing NOW they were going to go into bankrupcy, the villainess was simply going to take the money and run after the sales had come in.

    2) Feeling jilted by her husband cheating on her with a younger woman she goes all joker and decides that she is just going to make every woman ugly by creating the thing.

Halle was the first actor/actress that personally received her Razzie. Paul Verhoeven is the first period that received his Razzie for his directing of Showgirls, with the humorous speech (paraphrasing): "I left my home country where they hated my movies, so now, I'm truly at home. Thank you for embracing me as yours." The audience got a good laugh out of that.

"... and now she's completely empowered with no real obstacles." Yeah, I think that's mostly why this movie is so forgettable.

Uh hello they stole the sound of my farts without my permission when Sharon Stone went splat. Who do I talk to? Ungh, lowbrow, dat's how WE DO!
I'm surprised to see that Capoiera footage set up as if the 2 guys are actually fighting. I always thought it was a this silly activity created to keep in shape (like that ridiculous yoga). And I boxed for 2 years while next to a Capoiera club so I'm not just talking out of my ass. Then again I never bothered to ask them what they thought about their own "sport", we kind of looked down on them.
Really enjoyed this review; looking forward to more stuff from Dana!

Dena, I've always loved your videos, but as of this review I think you've become one of my favorite contributors to the site.
Calling this Catwoman-in-name-only couldn't be more accurate. I'm not even a huge Catwoman fan and I still can't stand how horribly her character was violated in this film!
Also am I the only one who thinks Sharon Stone's character has some similarities to BatmanTAS's Clayface? You know, getting addicted to a dangerous beauty cream and gaining superpowers from it? Meh. Probably a coincidence. After all it seems like the script was written based off a quick Wikipedia skim of Batman Returns' plot, so I doubt anyone involved even knows about TAS.

One good thing that might have come from this movie is Catwoman's actions in Batman: Arkham City.
