You pointed out the critical flaws in the VGA's, but as you well know, it's impossible to convince marketers to develop sensible content - left-brain people doing right-brain jobs. Don't waste your time writing letters to the VGAs.
The only way to play this one, imho, is to develop a NEW pitch for a NEW game awards show that incorporates all your great ideas of integrity, celebrity and good honest gamer-fun and bring it to Spike's competition.
It's a billion-dollar demographic and an 'easy sell' to the cash-strapped networks ... but as always, networks are waiting for SMART pitches.
You guys are brilliant writers, so team up and get'ur'done fellas! I'm rootin' for yuh!

06.01.2010 - 02:58 | shrederman38Joe, you should make your own game of the year awards, rather than having to rely on those incompetent morons.

12.16.2009 - 04:50 | cb19882000the only good award show so far is gphoria now they should bring jack black back he wouldnt be in brutal legend if he wasnt a gamer and 50 cent bulletproof did suck but trust me blood on the sand is a better game this game came out of nowhere and is one of the best games of 09 too
-
12.18.2009 - 16:09 | cb19882000i mean now at least no freakin celebs and they vote for best wii ds and strategy games amd shut up ruiner xplay liked 50 cent too it was up for an award
-
12.18.2009 - 05:56 | RuinerXXSinCityDon't take this personal, but honestly the only good thing that can be said about "Blood on the Sand" is that it was functional. The plot was absolutely horrid. The replay factor was nil.The worst part is that it borrowed everything in it from other better games, mainly Gears of War. Making the only reason for someone to purchase it is if they wanted the exclusive 50 cent tracks.
I think the reason PC games are non-existent there is simply because their developers write them off in terms of possible profit. Unfortunately for the exclusive PC gamers most companies are setting their sites strictly on console titles. It's fucking ridiculous how under appreciated PC gamers are. Not only are they treated like shit these days, but when they do get new titles they are forced to jump through a massive number of hoops because of security software.
It's pretty clear that Spike's VGA is nothing more then a long ass commercial. It's the same way with the Academy Awards. However, the difference between the two award shows is that the Oscars are much more subtle, where VGA shows shove the cash they make in your face. The Golden Raspberry awards are more professional then this crap

I actually tried (key word: TRIED) to whatch this "awards show" several years ago. As an avid gamer I felt insulted.
As a human being I felt angry that someone thought this was entertaining.
EDIT: JOE, you and the blister thumbs team need to get to gether and make a proper videogames award show! THAT would be fucking sweet.
That's my vote, Spoony as co-host, Goggles as annoncer, Benzaie as foriegn games expert. Make it happen!
-
12.16.2009 - 22:54 | BigDwhat? spoony is horrible when it comes to videogame reviews
-
12.17.2009 - 00:15 | ThatCreepAtYourWindowJust because you don't agree with Spoony's opinions doesn't mean he's bad. He's very good at stating his opinions clearly with good reasons why. He's funny in that funny-guy-you-knew-in- high-school kind of way: he doesn't try to be funny. He just is.
Also, Joe rocks. Spoony and Joe need to do a review together.

Dude Joe I love yours vids but whats with the Nhl hating? you say that you wish that the fans didn't vote for the winning games and then you ask how the fuck a hockey game could win "cause no one watches hockey" Nhl09 is probably one of the best sports games of all time and 10 just improved on it, Nhl10 deserved the sports game of the year award and Uncharted 2 deserved the game of the year, The vga's, I'll agree are stupid and quite boring but they're usually good when it comes to picking the winners, as I said, USUALLY.

I was thinking maybe they should do a tribute to certain video game companies that have been a classic to the gamer audience for example a tribute to Bioware, Show PC games for once as well because there are a lot of PC gamers.
Another thing on my mind and I want to get this out of the way, Out of Trials HD and Splosion Man
how in the FUCK!!!??? is the game Flower fueled by Mountain Dew???

They keep trying for this show, but it seems like it just doesn't add up as well as X-Play with the way that it does their awards show low key.
With some of the previews that they show, it's not too bad. The overall presentation, meh.
Only thing I can think of that could work, if at all, would be to use "legit" star power of actual gamers, rather than the ones they've used by far on the show.
-
12.16.2009 - 02:58 | Father TimeMy mom has a friend who is actually on the Academy Awards panel. From what I understand the number of people on the panel is really big (and still hand picked) so perhaps something like that can work for video game awards.
The celebrity picks made no sense, they had Mike Tyson there, why wasn't he presenting the best individual sports category? Is it because he was actually in one of the nominees (Fight Night Round 4)?
Besides GOTY Jack Black is the high point of the show and it shouldn't be that way (I'm not saying Jack Black is bad, he was good, the rest of the show should've at least been 3/4 as good).
Having gaming experts play the nominees or winners is a great idea and would be a great way to differentiate gaming as a medium.
Oh and one more thing Spike, please for the love of God stop pretending that only guys play video games when you give the awards, it's embarrassing.
-
12.16.2009 - 03:05 | corleone23i agree with almost everything yo said except for NHl10 that game is just toooo awesome, but for everything else joe you hit the nail on the head.
-
12.16.2009 - 03:05 | Mr MadheadJoe You are my hero
-
Also I was shocked Megan Fox won best female voice. In a truly just world the voice of Chloe would've killed everyone as you said (I think she did the best job of anyone in the entire game).
This is an example of fanboy bias at disgusting lows.

12.16.2009 - 03:13 | GuywithTheBigStick
this VGA was the first I ever watched and will be the last I ever bother wasting time on, I'd rather watch ever screwattack top 10 in tandem, atleast I know then that I'll actually be watching something made by people that actually played something more that just peggle.
why can't these people just let the nerds, geeks, and true gamers handle this.
-
12.16.2009 - 03:20 | Father TimeUh bigstick it's open voting on gametrailers, so trying to leave it up to the fans didn't work.
On a positive note, I did think this year was much better than last but why the musical performances? If you need music at least make it relevant. Have a live orchestra play the score of the best music winner.
The only time other professional award shows have live music performances (when they aren't music awards) is when they're relevant to the medium (I believe both the Tonys and the Oscars hand out awards to musicals).
-
12.16.2009 - 21:00 | GuywithTheBigStick
Did I say "Leave it to Fans?" NO.
I meant real geeks nerd and gamers, the ones that saved the 8-bit princesses, had 12 notebooks full of passwords, could wear out a Nintendo controller in an hour, spent their life as social outcasts. Not the ones that play guitar hero and halo and got into the group. They don't count to me. those are the ones that make the absolute crap the number 1 game for years just cause it looked good. being a fan and a real gamer are two different things.
Edit: course we need musical performances... The Minibosses or The Protomen would be great choices.

I suggest that the winners be chosen by a panel of critics, each one from a different major game website or magazine or whatever, as long as the business is considered credible to the public.
Also, have the guests be actors who appeared in a video game (contractually-obligated movie tie-in actors don't count). That's why Jack Black was a good choice.

-
12.16.2009 - 03:22 | OneFreeManThe show was and remains dismal, a real slap in the face to games and gaming community which the show should be focusing on.
Joe, I think you might be on something regarding the show being rigged. That BS with Uncharted wining the best game of the year and not in it's own category suggest to me that they were just trying to please developers and/or sponsors. Everyone gets a piece of the pie and that is just BS.
And the worst thing of all is what kind of image this donkey shit projects on gaming industry and gaming culture when it's being treated like some kind of bad joke.

Thanks Joe I agree I think that pc games and gamers should be recognized more! I mean come on there are way more video game reviewers (Xbox Nintendo ps3 Etc.) than pc game reviewers but this dosen't include you of course you review bolth.
Keep up the good work Joe

I say keep fan voting out of the process. When you let the fans vote, fanboys spam the polls regardless of the other nominees. I stopped Gphoria when something like 3/4 of the awards went to Gears of War. Don't get me wrong, I loved Gears. But when Lester Speight (the guy who played Agustus Cloe) beat ACADAMY-AWARD WINNER Linda Hunt for best vocal performance, you know that something is wrong.
-
I've been waiting for a while to hear somebody bash the VGA's, that corporate hellspawn of a money-grubbing show, and you were quite spot-on.
You should've mentioned that the nominees were prety much bullshit too ; left for dead 2 game of the year contender...really? What about Dragon age origins? Killzone 2 anyone? bah...the best 360 game nominees were a joke too.
Oh yea, and fucking 'plants versus zombies' nominated for best PC game of the year... might as well throw in bejeweled or fucking 'insertflashgamehere' while you're at it VGAs !!!
Oh and yea, apparently Hugh Jackman's grunts own Bill Murray and Vin Diesel's voice-acting put together. At least Shi(t)a Labeouf didn't win.
I could go on like this for a while, DAMN that show sucks ! Southpark let's go tower defense best game based on a TV/movie franchise? Really?? A TD fucking CLONE won over Ghostbusters ???ARghblbg
Oh and joe, the burger king call joke was hillarious *thumbs up*

me and all my friends thought the black guy announcer was Ludacris at first. We were rather embarrassed.
I also wtf'd at them giving away the fighting game award to SF. I mean, It was probably gonna win, yea. but they didn't even try. There was KoF, Tekken, Blazblue etc. It could've still had its little category.
Anyways, as mentioned, the show is a popularity contest. And on top of that its aimed for the casuals so its not surprising we only get the shooting games and stuff like that. however if you aimed it at the gamers it'll still be unfair. For example, Look at Gamefaqs. They hold the Character battle for the best video game character. the same 9 characters usually win (with some exceptions here and there).
It really should be up to a panel. However, it doesn't stop it from being rigged, The panel will end up being bribed anyways. There really can't be a proper way to hold a game awards show.
-
For one, Spike SHOULD NOT TOUCH the VGAs, and also, I don't think fans should vote, I do think experts should experts being NOT magazine editors funded by MTV or anything, or like heads of game companies (bastards would vote for their games anyway). As for the supposed ceremony on Spike, they cater to the meat-headed jock demographic (the creme de la creme of douchebaggery). I just don't know if there should even be a unified awards ceremony for gaming, there's just too much bullshit, too many fanboys, too many misconceptions about gaming that YOU KNOW advertisers are going to screw up. *facepalm* voice acting... Meagan Fox? I am at a loss of the sheer stupidity.
