05.17.2010 - 00:03 | vid3oman64Ehh... I dunno, as much as this game does sound really cool... It sounds like it'd get repetitive. The free roam sounds like it'll be limited: "oh look another wild animal, oh, well, it's dead now", "oh look a computer-controlled gang this'll be hard", "oh hey a team of actual people, suddenly i'm playing a standard third person deathmatch shooter", etc.
Basically, I don't know what will really make this game actually stand out. It being set in the west means virtually nothing. It's still a shooter, and it'll still have the standard gun types, and anyone that is getting just maybe a touch past sick of shooters (myself and I'm sure others included) is going to be bored by it, regardless of it's setting. The most intriguing thing in those videos were the mexican stand-offs, but that's awfully limited. The story sounded like it really had potential, but if the majority of the focus is really on the multiplayer, I know that's going to weaken the single player (added to it being what appears to be a standard shooter).
Dead Eye may be their attempt at a new shooting mechanic, but it's worthless in it's unchecked power. Just hold a button, swing the right stick around, and kill everything in front of you. Wha? That's not a mechanic, that's just automatic aiming.
I dunno. I'll have to check some reviews (Kotaku's, and certainly yours, Joe!) before I think about vomiting the sixty bucks.

WHAT? LOL. What makes this stand out?
Its a freaking western - that alone makes it stand out. Dead eye stand-offs, Mexican Staredowns - Lassos, horses - WTF are you talking about. WOW.
If this game doesnt deserve your money than no other game that has "computer controller opponents" does. its a game.[/b][/color]

05.17.2010 - 21:46 | vid3oman64@AngryJoeShow: I don't think it being a western is enough of a difference. That's a setting, not a gameplay mechanic. It's interesting, but not critical. I also like riding horses, but, I mean, that's just transportation. Besides the mexican standoffs and lassoing (both of which are only in a limited role) there doesn't sound like there's much to differentiate this game from the sea of shooters out there.
Don't get me wrong. I want this game to have a good story (the exact setting, the end of the western times, is very interesting and, as far as I know, hasn't been done in a game) with good mechanics to back it up (a lack of automatic guns could really make the game less of a spray and pray and more precise and strategic.) But I don't know if those things will happen.

This is like saying that in Grand Theft auto you just walk around and drive cars. That's it.
It's pretty damn successful though.

can i say did you play the other red dead :0 since if you did the whole comment is wrong, the dead eye has been in the past ones and the last review you realize its a LARGE area with alot to do, and the red dead series is trying to be a good western that doesn't exist yet plus the story has been always the important point (to vid30man64)
-
05.17.2010 - 21:47 | vid3oman64@jjmara813: No, didn't play the first one. The dead eye still seems like it will either be over- or underpowered. It being a large area easily emphasizes the possibility of repetitiveness. I don't know that the story is the important part, given all the marketing about all the multiplayer modes.

05.17.2010 - 01:29 | mexicanwaluigiThe only concern I have is if enough people will be playing it for real encounters. I mean that multiplayer sounds awesome, but if the game doesn't sell well then its gonna probably be one big open world with not much people.

05.17.2010 - 02:14 | HimWhile I would usually HATE this kind of game, I REALLY want to play it now. Excuse my inappropriate use of capitals. The point being is that it looks genuinely brilliant.

05.17.2010 - 03:54 | McBeaverI'm glad you mentioned the shooting mechanics. They look ominously similar to those of GTA4. The shooting mechanics, I think, held that multiplayer back because it was too restrictive. Lock-on targeting sort of defies the essence of a shooting game. Regardless, I hope if it is similar that the developers adjusted the mechanic based on a wide base of player feedback. Maybe I won't mind the targeting so much if I'm engrossed in the objectives they seem to have spent a decent amount of time on. Not to mention free DLC! I can't remember the last time I heard those words together.

I heard VALVe tried to make DLC free on the 360, but had problems with Microsoft about doing it. It sounds like the same problem may happen again for this game.
I have a hard time finding interesting games for my 360, but this game looks fun. If it turns out to be a TF2 or L4D situation, I guess I may just get it for the PC too.

05.17.2010 - 09:12 | chewee123After seeing your videos on Red Dead Redeption, I think I'm going to have to play this game, but on PS3, I just can't rely on my 360 anymore.
P.S. Sorry to bring this up AngryJoe, but GTA 5 isn't out yet.

im confused. angry joe seems to be happy joe.
hmm.
this sold me. not for talk of multi-player (looser with no friends, barely go online)
but the donkey-ridin'! rafts! cannons! more of the land seemed to have been shown in this video.
and free dlc also sounds fun. gold is great, but not too sure if its worth my life.
i really hope they allow us to attempt to ride wild animals. maybe tame them. imagine how cool you'd look riding into town on a dog! talk about get a long little doggy!
or a pig.
hope we can slaughter pigs and make bacon! maybe run around a chicken-coop and bite the heads off each one.
yeah, i think i am going a bit overboard.
but riding donkeys and rafts sure is fun.
:o hope we can dance on the raft! or control the oar or paddle or stick or whatever. and be able to hit people with it on the river-side as we go down the river. bopping them on the head. or knocking the hats off of them.

Very MMOish, this is the kind of multiplayer I think I could get into. I'm holding off on the game sadly, since I have an usually high concentration of releases over the summer and fall I'm buying (sims 3: Ambitions in June, Civ 5 in September, Fallout: New Vegas in October, Fable 3 in November or December), but I intend to rent Red Dead and Alan Wake both, and knowing me if I rent a game and end up really liking it I tend to buy it anyway.
