I got to admit Joe, it looked like he wanted to take your head off.

I spent some time with the demo after Penny Arcade talked about it...but I deleted the thing off my hard drive.

The driving controls were okay (though the npc ai seemed really suspicious and swerved a lot. The cops were pathetic. I stole a car, shot three guys in the face and even killed a couple cops with out any trouble.

The actual mission wasn't as epic as I wanted it to be. I couldn't prematurely explode the distillery AND I COULDN'T SHOOT THE WORKERS. They might be innocents but I'm supposed to be a hitman: Nobody who isn't paying is allowed to see me and get away alive and anyone who who gets in my way gets taken down. Considering the cops are on the way so quickly following the explosion, I'm pretty sure one of them fingered us. =_=

The gun controls were okay but my character used guns like a wimp (the shotgun flew up to ceiling each time there was kick back). Also, my partner ais were okay but developers need to learn to not make ais annoying (they constantly yelled at me to hurry up (while they were behind me...which led to me taking a clip to the face) and got in my way causing me to die twice on the bit after you get out of the elevator.

The camera thugh...the fucking ear fetish camera is what pissed me off...WE ARE IN 2010...GET YOUR CAMERA TO WORK RIGHT. While it was fine for car scenes and mounted machine guns it seemed to really focus on my characters bald spot and ears all the damn time, making my character take up a third of the screen...kinda like Dirge of cerebrus. Toughest part of the Demo? GETTING OUT OF MY FREAKING HOUSE.

Also, it had cutscene power. When you enter the warehouse: you can't kill one guy till he hops behind some boxes and when you finally are at the target, it goes to a cutscene where one of your boys screws up royally instead of just blasting away (I hate when developers and writers use that gimmik).

With no co-op or multi player to maybe add some fun to the mix, I'm giving this a full pass...no buying, no rental, no sweepstakes entry.

    Errr.... No. Just.. No.
You're not a Hitman, you're a gangster. A wise guy. You don't kill Innocents when you can avoid it; that's bad for business and makes it harder to bribe the law later on than if you wacked a couple other criminals.
And where do you get that "Nobody is allowed to see me" bullshit? First, you shoot a fucking MG-42 in the middle of a street. People will notice that.
Second, it's always good to let people alive, so they know what happens if someone crosses you, your partners, your family or your Don.
If nobody should know about a hit, you'll do it at night, not in broad daylight in the middle of town.
Have you never watched a damn mafia movie?
  • bojak90  - I'll concede
    avatar
Okay, I concede. You're right, you play a gangster which does mean that that part of my comment was full of crap

On the oher hand, I'm allowed to cap anyone I want on the street leading up to a mission but once I start, the mission suddenly makes innocents off-limits.
  • Gen
Well, you're right with that one.
Maybe the full game handles this whole stuff differently - we'll see when it comes out, i guess..

I haven't played the first, but from the footage in this video, it looks like yet another GTA clone. I don't think they'll get to make a Mafia III.

The games are not like gta. The city is in between missions or sometimes part of the mission. In the first game, the city had side quests, chases and escapes, trailing, and a optional free ride mode to do whatever you want and a Mission mode once you beat the game. Once you go to a certain area, the game becomes linear mission mode. The story is at the forefront of the game and your primary focus.

The first game was painfully forgettable, and I feel that the second will be the same. Oh and I love how when joe asks what's innovative about this game the guy says there's nothing like it...except for Saint's Row, Godfather the Game, Crackdown, and every single fucking GTA game!!!

Did you see the size of that guy? Joe may be Angry Joe, but pissing off a guy who could pass as a bouncer may have not been the best idea ... but i do agree to a point - no multiplayer will almost have the game killed in many minds before it's released.
  • whatever42
    avatar
Yeah, a lot of people seem to write off most games that do not have multiplayer in some fashion without seeing much else. There are some notable exceptions, but that is the general rule.

As for the game, I'm probably not going to get it, but I'll keep my eye on it. I wasn't too interested in the first one and this one doesn't excite me too much. However, who knows? Maybe we'll all be pleasently surprised. Nice little interview Joe. =)
  • BS Digital Q
Huh, surprised you didn't tear off Jack's head when he said no co-op/multiplayer, Joe. :grr:

I think Angry Joe was ready to pull out those MP5's when he heard "NO MULTIPLAYER" As long as it's a nice long and involved game then it shouldn't be too bad.

I got to try out the demo, and it feels very tight control wise, and you can upgrade the cars, but I hope the story missions are more varied and not holding your hand throughout the game. Also, cops have a line in sight, so its possible to hide from the cops, but still be wanted which is a plus in my book.

The first Mafia was probably one of the most underrated games of the last 10 years with innovative gameplay and an awesome story, of course once you got into it!

Mafia 2 is looking awesome! And I have tried both the PC and Xbox 360 demo. The story is looking good and the driving and shooting sections are improved, but still tactical and realistic like the first game. The story also seemed on par with the first game which can only be a good thing.

My only disappointment was with the 360 version and the fact that it had issues with the frame rate when you where in tight interiors. Oh and I still worry that it might turn into GTA, I just hope the story is as tight as the devs claim that it is.

Either way I am looking forward to Friday the 27th when it comes out over here in the UK.

I honestly never forgot the twenty minutes I spend with Mafia I :).

The game is set from 1945 to the mid/late 1950's, which is why it has the rock and roll OST, and why that song is included.

I've been wanting a 40s-50s mafia game that would be as well made and varied as Saints Row 2 or Red Dead Redemption .... but with no co-op or multiplayer, and then reading some of the other people's comments, i am much less excited.

This is more of a single player mission game with the city acting as a way to getting to point to point and for events. If you go into this expecting it to be GTA they you may be disappointed. Try the demo's for the first and second games and see what it's like.
  • Churchy99
I loved the first Mafia (The PC version) - SO many things made it great, the story, the characters, the controls, the music and the more realistic approach made it fun and interesting. I like it more than most 3D GTA games.

But from what I've played of the demo, I'm really let down. It isn't just the gameplay. It's actually the style of the game and the story. So far none of the characters really seem that interesting and so far I don't really give 2 shits about them. So far it's a bit bland and boring. Also that damn camera was so frustrating!

I'm going to wait a bit before I even consider picking this up or perhaps just rent it!

Also I loved how much Joe was taking the piss in this one. Size doesn't really matter in a fight if you know what you're doing!

I've played the demo and it seemed fun. Right now it's a fine game. Although doesn't look to ambitious. Quite Frankly I hate how games try to live solely off multiplayer. So the fact they said single player only while a bit disappointing, hopefully since they only have to work on this they will have a better story than most these games. Also where else am I suppose to go for my 50's style mafia game?
  • aem949  - The demo sucked.
I played it,shooting sucked, driving sucked, and the cops do shoot you for speeding.
That guy was about to kick your ass Joe. =)

That guy's demeanor alone is enough to make me not want the game. He didn't seem excited at all. "Yeah. Our game is there. buy it. I guess."
I'll save my money for those games that seem like the developers actually wanted to make them.
  • Lunar
I'm gonna listen to Joe =D My kinda movie :want:

meh as far as multiplayer goes, I would prefer a well done dedicated singleplayer then them to try and tack on a crappy multiplayer because people dismiss any game without it.
  • VoidKeeper
YES! They're not effin it up like Bioshock 2! Stick with the SP, that's my kind of developer!

Don't get me wrong, I did like Bioshock 2, but I really felt it lacking...

Damn, what a bad PA-Guy, its almost as he didn't want to talk about the game!! How does he expect to sell the roduct with that attitude?

Anyway, the game looks interesting, but I'm not into Mafia-Stuff...

I downloaded the demo for this a while back, I can't wait for this game.

Also, I applaud Jack for actually giving straight answers about the game instead of just maybes. I'm also glad to hear that they stuck to single player only. I hate it when the single player campaign gets half-assed and ignored because the devs want to implement a generic online mode.

    Definitely buying this game.
