I got to admit Joe, it looked like he wanted to take your head off.
I spent some time with the demo after Penny Arcade talked about it...but I deleted the thing off my hard drive.
The driving controls were okay (though the npc ai seemed really suspicious and swerved a lot. The cops were pathetic. I stole a car, shot three guys in the face and even killed a couple cops with out any trouble.
The actual mission wasn't as epic as I wanted it to be. I couldn't prematurely explode the distillery AND I COULDN'T SHOOT THE WORKERS. They might be innocents but I'm supposed to be a hitman: Nobody who isn't paying is allowed to see me and get away alive and anyone who who gets in my way gets taken down. Considering the cops are on the way so quickly following the explosion, I'm pretty sure one of them fingered us. =_=
The gun controls were okay but my character used guns like a wimp (the shotgun flew up to ceiling each time there was kick back). Also, my partner ais were okay but developers need to learn to not make ais annoying (they constantly yelled at me to hurry up (while they were behind me...which led to me taking a clip to the face) and got in my way causing me to die twice on the bit after you get out of the elevator.
The camera thugh...the fucking ear fetish camera is what pissed me off...WE ARE IN 2010...GET YOUR CAMERA TO WORK RIGHT. While it was fine for car scenes and mounted machine guns it seemed to really focus on my characters bald spot and ears all the damn time, making my character take up a third of the screen...kinda like Dirge of cerebrus. Toughest part of the Demo? GETTING OUT OF MY FREAKING HOUSE.
Also, it had cutscene power. When you enter the warehouse: you can't kill one guy till he hops behind some boxes and when you finally are at the target, it goes to a cutscene where one of your boys screws up royally instead of just blasting away (I hate when developers and writers use that gimmik).
With no co-op or multi player to maybe add some fun to the mix, I'm giving this a full pass...no buying, no rental, no sweepstakes entry.

Errr.... No. Just.. No.
You're not a Hitman, you're a gangster. A wise guy. You don't kill Innocents when you can avoid it; that's bad for business and makes it harder to bribe the law later on than if you wacked a couple other criminals.
And where do you get that "Nobody is allowed to see me" bullshit? First, you shoot a fucking MG-42 in the middle of a street. People will notice that.
Second, it's always good to let people alive, so they know what happens if someone crosses you, your partners, your family or your Don.
If nobody should know about a hit, you'll do it at night, not in broad daylight in the middle of town.
Have you never watched a damn mafia movie?

Maybe the full game handles this whole stuff differently - we'll see when it comes out, i guess..

The games are not like gta. The city is in between missions or sometimes part of the mission. In the first game, the city had side quests, chases and escapes, trailing, and a optional free ride mode to do whatever you want and a Mission mode once you beat the game. Once you go to a certain area, the game becomes linear mission mode. The story is at the forefront of the game and your primary focus.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to write off most games that do not have multiplayer in some fashion without seeing much else. There are some notable exceptions, but that is the general rule.
As for the game, I'm probably not going to get it, but I'll keep my eye on it. I wasn't too interested in the first one and this one doesn't excite me too much. However, who knows? Maybe we'll all be pleasently surprised. Nice little interview Joe. =)

I got to try out the demo, and it feels very tight control wise, and you can upgrade the cars, but I hope the story missions are more varied and not holding your hand throughout the game. Also, cops have a line in sight, so its possible to hide from the cops, but still be wanted which is a plus in my book.

08.17.2010 - 23:48 | SorvallThe first Mafia was probably one of the most underrated games of the last 10 years with innovative gameplay and an awesome story, of course once you got into it!
Mafia 2 is looking awesome! And I have tried both the PC and Xbox 360 demo. The story is looking good and the driving and shooting sections are improved, but still tactical and realistic like the first game. The story also seemed on par with the first game which can only be a good thing.
My only disappointment was with the 360 version and the fact that it had issues with the frame rate when you where in tight interiors. Oh and I still worry that it might turn into GTA, I just hope the story is as tight as the devs claim that it is.
Either way I am looking forward to Friday the 27th when it comes out over here in the UK.

The game is set from 1945 to the mid/late 1950's, which is why it has the rock and roll OST, and why that song is included.

08.18.2010 - 03:36 | Churchy99I loved the first Mafia (The PC version) - SO many things made it great, the story, the characters, the controls, the music and the more realistic approach made it fun and interesting. I like it more than most 3D GTA games.
But from what I've played of the demo, I'm really let down. It isn't just the gameplay. It's actually the style of the game and the story. So far none of the characters really seem that interesting and so far I don't really give 2 shits about them. So far it's a bit bland and boring. Also that damn camera was so frustrating!
I'm going to wait a bit before I even consider picking this up or perhaps just rent it!
Also I loved how much Joe was taking the piss in this one. Size doesn't really matter in a fight if you know what you're doing!
-
I've played the demo and it seemed fun. Right now it's a fine game. Although doesn't look to ambitious. Quite Frankly I hate how games try to live solely off multiplayer. So the fact they said single player only while a bit disappointing, hopefully since they only have to work on this they will have a better story than most these games. Also where else am I suppose to go for my 50's style mafia game?

I played it,shooting sucked, driving sucked, and the cops do shoot you for speeding.
That guy was about to kick your ass Joe. =)

Don't get me wrong, I did like Bioshock 2, but I really felt it lacking...

I downloaded the demo for this a while back, I can't wait for this game.
Also, I applaud Jack for actually giving straight answers about the game instead of just maybes. I'm also glad to hear that they stuck to single player only. I hate it when the single player campaign gets half-assed and ignored because the devs want to implement a generic online mode.
Definitely buying this game.
