i honestly think 2k has done it again personally, what with bioshock and bioshock 2, they have some great experience with the fps genre and xcom is sure to be another name to add to their accomplishments and all i can do is wait for them to release it so i can enjoy it, kinda strange switching the genre, but i have faith... and nice punch to james lol

First of all, it is really awesome how things worked out with James Rolfe. I guess, sometimes, things can work out even better than you plan, huh Joe? It was a great little cameo.
As for XCOM, I never played the original, so I have no frame of refernece for this. From what I've seen however, the game looks pretty cool. I'm having trouble getting excited because I am totally FPSd out at the moment, but I can see some real potential in this if they take it in the right direction.
Cool interview Joe. As I've said previously, always nice to see more of what was happening at E3. :)

I remember Spoony talking about how pissed off he was that the game was set in the 50's and didn't feature the old aliens like Sectoids and whatnot. I agree, it would have been nice to see those again in full 3D, but, if you think about it, the point of the original was to research these races, find out what makes them tick, where they come from, and how to take them out. If they'd kept the same aliens from before, the fans would already know everything. The way I see it, this game's new aliens, new settings, and overall new story will allow you to have the same mystery-solving experience from the first, but from a new perspective.

06.28.2010 - 00:39 | BlueGeminiI LOL'd on James' cameo
I like strategy games but not much in FPS so I don't know what to say about XCOM turning into FPS but like Angry Joe said, let's just wait for while til that game will release.

06.28.2010 - 01:16 | bobothegoatI guess what I wonder is why they even had to name it XCOM at all. The setting is different, the aliens are different, and it's not even the same genre. So why call it XCOM? No matter how I look at it, it still pisses me off.
There's a lot of time to go before this game comes out, but for now I'm holding a completely dismissive position toward this game.

Because its a great franchise that needs to return. If this game does well other possibilities open up.
Ever since the kotaku article, it seems alot of people ask this question. Its pretty simple, it has XCOM elements, just because its in a different time period and perspective doesnt mean it CANT be named XCOM. What about terror from the deep (underwater) or Alliance/Enforcer or Interceptor - they are all XCOMS.

...for what? To see if it will be a good shooter? A good shooter with "strategy elements"?
We have enough shooters on the market right now, thank you very much. But we could use more strategy games. So when I hear about a cult strategy franchise being turned into a fucking FPS, it fucking pisses me off.
What's wrong with the top down view? What's wrong with turn based gameplay? There's nothing wrong with them. It's efficient and it's fun. I shit you not.
There are people who tries to convince us that this type of gameplay is a relic of the past, that we should accept "change". In other words: shut up and enjoy games the same way as I do.
Yeah, sure.
This kind of gameplay just lost a popularity contest. FPS are more popular than strategy games, they sell better. Using a cult brand is good for the marketing, I suppose. That's about it.
Sure, can be a good game. Will it convince its target audience to try the old games? Will it create demand for strategy games?
I won't hold my breath.

06.29.2010 - 08:45 | Mousse420Apocalypse was my favorite X-Com, personally. I loved the pause-anywhere quasi-realtime thing, as well as the urban setting.
As for this new one, IMHO they COULD have something good here depending on how much they carry over from the originals. If it followed more or less the same formula, carrying over many of the original elements but just in real-time with a first person perspective, that might be something I could get into.
....But that would be in effect a pretty innovative game, something fairly unlikely to be done with an established license like this, due to a combination of the risk and cost of making an FPS engine that can effectively handle levels that are both randomly generated and destructible. Doing this would be key to the experience.
If you look at Rainbow Six 1 and 2, youll see how an FPS can be quite strategic and tense. I don't believe the perspective & real-timeyness alone equal failure; however I'm not holding my breath for this developer to take the kinds of risks involved in creating the game i just described.
If they don't have randomly generated and destructible environments, along with other already mentioned features (base building, loadouts, etc) we ARE going to end up with yet another cash-in FPS. If we're talking about Half Life/Area 51 style rail shooting with pre-scripted events and a storyline dominating the experience and coming before everything else, despite the fact that we ALL care more about the gameplay, then this game will suck. You can't be "afraid" of, or disoriented by, a scripted event.
If you look at the X-Com franchise as a whole, they have almost never re-used the same alien races from one game to another. The fact that they came up with entirely new aliens is nothing to complain about, Spoony. Having "familiar faces" would COMPLETELY go against the idea of "enemy unknown"
Oh, and the 1950s setting, to me, SCREAMS "we're imitating Fallout 3 and Bioshock because they made money. Being the corporate whores we are, we fail to consider the possibility that those games were liked simply for flat-out quality - we just want something we can ape for a quick buck, and you kids like this 1950s shit, right? Yeah, they'll buy that." (until they make us all sick of it like they did with WW2 and space marine shooters). In a few years we are going to be BEGGING all the big publishers to STOP PUTTING OUT ALL THESE FUCKING 1950s THEMED GAMES.... Or maybe we've already reached that point...
I originally said something here about how it might also end up in a gray area and be somewhat decent, but actually fuck that. If it's yet another run-n-gun shooter in an already over-saturated market, then it's just whoring out the franchise, giving us yet another mediocre FPS which most likely doesn't truly do anything new. The footage may be limited, but it gives me the impression of running and gunn...
