You know this feels like it's trying to be "Mass Effect" and it fails greatly. Or maybe it's trying to be a more hard core version of Mass Effect, which is interesting but honestly what makes Mass Effect so good with it's "Loyalty" idea is that the AI will always listen to you regardless if your on good terms with a character or not. Also you can at least win the loyalty of those characters down the road if your high enough on either Paragon or Renegade.
It doesn't look that bad but honestly it is suffering from the whole "lack of ammo drops" problem. If your going to give waves upon waves of enemies, at least give the player enough ammo to stand on their own if they can't get their AI teammates to listen to them.

Jo - You CAN pick up weapons on the ground like that big chain gun that black painted robot had.
Jo - You CAN also pick your shot to spare ammo instead of panic shooting.
Jo - You CAN also get to the upper floor clear that area then ambush the rest.
Jo - You CAN also call an ally to heal you while you are down.
But im not blaming you for all this, the demo is missing the tutorial present in the japanese demo. They kinda thought americains could handle it lol.
Go get the full get to FULLY understand the entire gameplay mechanic.

03.01.2012 - 10:44 | TrencherThis game looks really cool but I hate haveing with me squad members so I will pass.

03.01.2012 - 10:51 | sjneowThe demo of course is not a good representation of the RPG-ish relationship system, I think ME3 demo is not a good representation of it's combat system as well, squadmates fights better when their trusts level is high. I actually thought this is going to be a full review Joe. I'm very disappointed that you already trying to assign a score to this game by just playing the demo. Everybody can play a demo and decide whether to buy a game.
I thought you would have gone better because your last few reviews are actually very good and informative, Why don't you take your time and play this game then come back with a review.

03.01.2012 - 11:10 | ThePsychoGamerNo, the command system worked pretty well, you just have to use a microphone. This also allows you to single out squad members and give them specific instructions.
Any ways the fact that this is from the same team behind Yakuza is enough for this game to be an instant buy for me. Yakuza 3 and 4 where some of the best games this generation.

The damage system for the enemy robots is pretty impressive, but the rest of it looks pretty generic, if challenging. Challenging in that "we barely know how to make CPS's (Covered Person Shooters), but we played Gears of Wars once" kind of way.
And I for one friggin' hate rep system. I can kind of tolerate them in a game like Mass Effect because they have decent writing and you're running around taking down checklists of people's problems to solve anyways, but really, what place does it have here?
A military squad, even a mercenary one, understands the necessity for cohesion during battle regardless of your personal feelings for someone. Letting your buddy get flanked because you're tired of him taking the juice box out of your bag lunch is going to get YOU killed just as fast as it gets HIM killed. On top of that, why the hell should a squad leader have to pander to his men? He doesn't.
I'm not gonna join in a subordinate's dick-waving contest to make you feel better about your juvenile sexual fantasies. This is a combat zone and you will get your head in the game, do your goddamn job and shut the fuck up, or you can walk home right now. I don't have time for this bullshit.
A squad should respond to a leader's choices, not the other way around.

Oh so it your leader shoots at you when as you are commanded to take point, you would really follow his orders again?
If a squad leader has a shit personality, has shit tactics and prefers to go solo instead of building teamwork with his squad members, then he aint much of a squad leader. Its just like a FPS clan/team - No one listen to the one going Solo in the battlefield while accidentally friendly firing other teammates or not even bothering communicating with them.

I'm sorry, you're assuming that a squad of professional soldiers - even fake ones in a video game - should act like petty children with schoolyard attitudes? That these men somehow became hardened soldiers by sitting in a plush chair sucking back cheetohs and Mountain Dew and getting the highest kill score in CoD:MW3? You seem to be, because you're insinuating that an actual military squads are great galloping douche-bags, opening fire on one another and tea-bagging female squadmates. That sniveling juvenile bullshit wouldn't survive basic training: if the drill instructor didn't beat seven shades of it out of you, then your squad would for all the punishments the instructor lays down on all of them because of your actions.
Go watch actual soldiers playing multi-player games in training scenarios. No, go watch actual soldiers in ACTUAL firefights, the videos are all over YouTube.

03.03.2012 - 23:58 | Mokuu
Oh those fine military soldiers spotted pissing on Iraq corps?
Now back to the original point - First: Team building is essential to a good squad. If YOU cant control your aim nor be coherent with your then you shouldn't be in the field at all.
Second: From the game aspect, after testing it out, you have to be a complete douche as well as fire at your allies more than 70 rounds to get their trust to the level where they wont obey your orders. You literally have to go out of your way to get them to hate you and even then you can easily get their trust by head-shooting, multi kills and reviving them. So you really REALLY have to dig yourself a hole to have the entire team against you and EVEN THEN you can get alternate story branches with that.
So frankly, there is nothing to wine about unless your gameplay skills are really lacking.

this game seems like vanquish without the fun. I can appreciate the middle of the ground aesthetic. Not too japanese or american in character/robot design. But the gameplay looks ho hum.
Damn angry joe cusses a lot. His reviews show off his vocabulary but his lets plays (if this counts as one) sure make him sound like someone on XBL. yeesh, you'd think the guy was mad or something...

I'm disappointed that so many people are not giving this game a shot because of first impressions. I bought it the day it came out and beat it on a marathon session. I LOVED the friggin'game, and here are reasons why:
-The plot is PURE CLASSIC CYBERPUNK. It actually had some plot twists that I didn't expect, and it has classic philosophical cyberpunk themes all throughout. The characters are interesting, with defined personalities, and interacting with them actually lets you see there's more to them than meets the eye. The game's world is also interesting as hell, with an interesting sociopolitical situation and a sense of importance to the characters' actions. The cinematic presentation of the game is also badass, but what else do you expect from the guys who made Yakuza?
-The action never lets up. There's rarely a moment when you're not blowing shit up, and the calm moments are always in service of the plot. For those people who complain that it can get repetitive... it's a friggin' shooter game, duh. Gears Of War is just as repetitive, and you don't see people complaining about it, it's hypocritical. As for Joe's complaint about ammo being scarce... huh? The vending machines sell ammo, and there's plenty of ammo boxes in the game. You should also scavenge from enemies as much as possible. For example, I use the enemy bots' assault rifle instead of my default one constantly, since ammo's plentiful, and if I run out of ammo for it I still have mine fully loaded and ready to go. The only weapons that might have scarce ammo are shotguns and sniper rifles, but those weapons are rare and hold little ammo anyway, and even those can be replenished with ammo boxes. Weapon selection has good variety: assault rifles, submachine guns, pistols, light machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns... and grabbing a minigun and going apeshit on the enemy RULES.
-The loyalty system works. Many small things help you develop loyalty with your characters, and they react positively and negatively in a natural way. Grabbing a minigun and blowing through the enemy, for example, will make your buddies cheer you on for being a badass, while slacking off in a firefight or getting wounded a lot will piss them off, since you're being a load. People might complain at how sometimes they might get in the way while fighting, but pretty much any game of this type has that kind of problem, and it can be resolved with a little situational awareness. Talking with your buds between scenes also helps you know more about them, which fleshes out their character. For example, Charlie is an avid reader. I betcha half the people who've played the game don't even know that. Also, although I haven't tested it out by doing a second playthrough, your teammates apparently can actually die for good if your loyalty's not high enough(at TV Tropes, someone mentioned that Big Bo died in their campaign, and he didn't die in mine).
-The enemy damage s...

Damn word limit!
-The enemy damage system is awesome. Limbs are targetable independently, like in Dead Space, and it actually pays off to know which limbs to target depending on the situation. Shooting a robot's weapon arm obviously disarms it, and it'll try to grab its weapon with it's remaining good arm(or ANY weapon, I noticed they'll try to grab a rifle even if its not theirs!), which distracts them enough for you to finish the job. Targeting the legs obviously cripple them, but also their accuracy goes to shit because of bad positioning, especially useful against enemies with riot shields. Targeting the head can actually help you out a LOT in hairy situations, since it might not instantly kill them sometimes, but without a head the can't tell friend or foe and open fire on their own buds! Many of the tougher spots in the game can actually be made much easier by being precise and targeting the head.
Seriously, guys, if I can't convince you to buy the game, at least give it a rent or borrow it from a friend, I assure you you'll be pleasantly surprised. The game's fun, has a very intriguing cyberpunk storyline, and it's pretty much the best Terminator game ever made :p It also reminds me a lot of Snatcher, too.
Next up, Yakuza: Dead Souls. Can't wait! :)

03.01.2012 - 18:35 | EldejotSomehow Joe manages to be pretty terrible at just about any game he ever records himself playing.
Which is tragic, considering the fact that once he really gets a game, he is quite entertaining and insightful.
Please, Joe, do try and explore a game and its controls, instead of just going Rambo on everything.

If you hold down the grenade button it does give you a throwing line. And you should never be out of ammo for the main gun as the venders sell main gun ammo.
I hope we get a real review of the game instead of this hold over demo review. We didn't even get to see the whole demo.
Surprised that Joe didn't like the game as I thought it was fairly good demo. The gunplay was meh but the enemy selection (for the demo) was solid and the environments were cool. And the bosses look like they are cool too. The squad combat looks like crap but the characters seem really cool, mainly Faye and Mr. Frenchy the Robot who is really cool.
And the robot damage was really unique. If you blow off their legs they crawl towards you. If you shoot their gun arm they drop their gun and pick it up with their other arm.

I picked this game up a few days ago and I must say, it is really a lot of fun.
I get an Isaac Asimov feel from this game. Anyone who doesn't know who Asimov is, remember the I, Robot movie that came out a while back with Will Smith? That movie was based off Asimov's Robot novel series.
So far, I'm in Chapter 3 of the game and its really fascinating. The gameplay is fun and challenging. Dealing with your squad can be a little challenging at times but its far from the worst squad based shooter I've ever played. Its not difficult to build a rapport with your teammates. The choices you make are pretty simple if you want to build comraderie. The graphics are pretty solid (as shown in the video). I really like the soundtrack of this game so far as well as the voice acting. The story is pretty good from what I'm able to grasp of it. They sort of throw you in the action first and then sort of slowly fill in story to give you a break in the action...which is actually a good concept to me. A lot of FPS or TPS gamers don't want to get bogged down by CGI movies before the game even starts. One of my favorite aspects of this game is the tactics you need to use in battle. This isn't a game where you can just run around and shoot at enemies willy-nilly. You need to take cover, operate cranes, take out armor with rockets, place grenades in the right place, have your comrades take appropriate action.
Overall, Joe is not very good at this game and didn't really give it a fair shake. Granted, I can't really blame him since I can't understand why there wasn't a tutorial system showing him how its supposed to go. In the actual game, there is a tutorial system that shows you how you should play the game. My final word is, don't take Joe's words too seriously. The demo really did not do the best job of showing you how to play the game, nor did Joe play very competently.

Joe does not do it justice. It was a very good game with an excellent story. I think even Isaac Asimov would be proud of the story that was put into this game.
Of course, this game does have a few flaws (like the AI of your teammates) but it isn't as bad as Joe makes it out to be. On top of that, Joe did not play this game very strategically. This isn't a game where you can just run around and shoot like crazy like Modern Warfare. You need to take your enemies down with strategy.
Just so you know, they did sort of leave this game open for a sequel. A sequel that I most certainly would pick up if it were every created.
