I've reviewed them for my podcast. They work. Problem fixed - now you can watch any showing you want, and not be bothered by unnecessary/lousy 3D:

the director fucked up a lot in this movie
in the comics thor does not remember who he is when he is sent to earth and donald blake was a paraplegic. He actually spent ten years on earth and gained an md and developed a relationship with jane foster.
Had the director hinted at any of this the love intrest would be more believable but it would have also been hard to transfer to the big screen. Although I agree with your review I dont understand why everyone keeps saying they stayed with the comics and all that bullshit.
Anyway all that aside great review Joe.

05.10.2011 - 16:34 | DisappearingBearsQuite frankly I'm glad they used the "good" parts of the Ultimate Universe while also cutting out the "bad" parts. Mark Millar can write some pretty epic stories, but too often he veers into the offensive simply for the sake of being offensive. He makes it difficult to root for the heroes since they're often little better than the villains they're fighting. That's not the sort of thing most audiences want to see.
Also, (possible SPOILERS ahead) completely agree with Joe that Odin's rationale for banishing Thor was farfetched. It would have made more sense if the Frost Giants were set up and collectively not at fault for the attempt to steal the casket. That way, when Thor stomped the hell out of them and returned to Odin, Odin could say, "It wasn't really them, you hotheaded idiot," and he'd have a perfectly good reason for banishing Thor. Unfortunately, the way they did handle this makes Odin look like a weak leader.

nice Review Joe.
Would like to rebuff some points and offer insight.
Yes Thor at the beginning is a War Mongering Douche, but he also loves his friends family and Asgard very much. You can probably think of him as a Cosmic Red Neck.
The reasons he stops being such an ass are not limited to his interactions with Portman on earth.
SPOILERS
First of all comes the shame from Being depowered.
Then realizing that He is never going to see Asgard again.
Getting taken out by the medics which just breaks down his pride even more.
Sharing a bro moment with Dr Elzig.
Realizing he is no longer worthy of using Mjolnir.
And the biggest issues getting told that Odin was dead and his Mother doesnt want him coming home.
This last one in particular can hit people pretty hard, losing a parent and then being told you cannot come home by your mother, I cant even imagine how I would react to this.
On regards to the romance subplot, yeah it could have used a bit more time, but the movie was already 2 hours long, so sticking in more love scenes would have not been that good.
Besides you already stated it yourself, the women in the theaters swooned when they saw him with his shirt off. Physical attraction is always important in relationships, anyone who says otherwise is lying, add to that, That Thor was practically living Proof of all of Jane's lifetime research, made her fall head over heels for her, the finishing blow was Thor getting her notebook back for her.

Each to their own opinions, Joe. But I gotta say, my own opinion is summed up more by boag. I thought it was a pretty good movie.
On a side note, I'm very lucky to have three theatres close by. One doesn't do 3D. Another theatre charges $2 for four different movies that have left the recent lineup, and doesn't do 3D. And the big, awesome theatre we have runs both 2D and 3D. They devote four theatres to a popular movie, two in 2D and two in 3D. And the 3D glasses are disposables that come in plastic wrappers. It takes a review like this to realize just how pampered we are in my town. =P Here's hoping that such a theatre opens up in your area, Joe.

I think what we need to keep in mind about the Thor movie that not only is it the origin story (obviously) but that there are so many ways it could have gone wrong, that maybe it's best that it came out as "alright".
Personally, I believe it's pretty good (thank the gods I saw it in 2D though, I hate 3D as well), but to each his own.
I do disagree, however, on skipping the end credits scene. I can GUARANTEE that it'll be the focal point of the Avengers movie.

Weird, here in Florida, we have multiple theaters where we get to chose in 3D or 2D, and we have no tables. I think why people enjoy this film a lot is because of simplistically, it wasn't over-done or underdone. The acting was great for everybody, and the comedy relief isn't annoying. Plus out of all the anti-climatic fights of the lion's gate marvel film universe, this was the best, maybe because there was better buildup, and Thor also fought Loki, so 2 fights. Also Thor's home world looks "purteey".

05.09.2011 - 00:09 | ScytheRexxHey Joe, I never noticed you lived in Austin, we probably went to the same Alamo. Maybe we can hang out sometime. =P
I agree a lot about the 3D, I didn't understand why the Alamo didn't give us other options. I ended up getting stuck in the front row with my wife and swear I was going to have a headache. I kept finding myself putting my glassed on and taking them off depending on the scene. Took away more from the movie then it added.

Are there really no theaters that show the 2-D versions of 3-D films in Austin? Wow... I've never had any problem finding 2-D showings; most theaters have several times as many 2-D showings as 3-D showings, if they offer 3-D at all. Then again, I don't live in Texas, so the people around me are actually sane (zing!). I'm not sure it's as big a conspiracy as you make it out to be.

Up here in Iowa, (or at least the multi-plex in the city where I live) you have a choice whether or not to watch it in 2D or 3D when you buy your ticket, if you choose the 3D movie they had you both the ticket and the glasses. (most choose 2D basically because its just more cost effective) but that is based off of the last time I went there when they had "Alice in Wonderland" in theaters both 2D and 3D. But I think that should be something more theaters should do.

I'm thinking you're problem should be with the theaters Joe, not the companies or movie creators. Up here in Calgary, it's really easy to find a 2D version of a 3D movie. Also, I'm not sure if it's just Canada, or the theater you go to, but all 3D glasses are brand new, and pre-packaged and are then recycled (or taken home) at the end of the movie. So no goo and the extra cost makes a little more sense since your basically buying a new set of glasses.
I did see the 2D and ya, I've heard there is very little difference. But some people just like the 3D effect. I personally don't.
One of the reasons it's being praised is because the director didn't go super dark or into deep psychological crises or drinking problems, etc. like Iron Man and Batman (and just about every other super hero movie lately). Its fun and it's for kids as much as adults. And for the beautiful design on the movie.
I don't really agree on your opinion but I agree on a few parts, like the pacing. And ya, the ending after the credits wasn't THAT good. But I, personally, agree with boag more.

15:23 - Holy crap! You can totally see part of the boom mic in the shot with Thor speaking to Odin. At one point the mic operator even realizes this and you see it move out of the shot but then back in.
If you don't like the 3D Joe, then you should come to El Cajon, California. The majority of the films they show are in 2D but they give you the option of seeing it in 3D as well. Plus we're getting an IMAX theater too!
"I'm Thor!" - Love that line!

WOW. You're right. Considering all the man-hours that probably went into the special effects, that is TOTALLY inexcusable. Nobody noticed it or thought to edit it out somehow? Really?
We have similar conditions up here in Escondido. I think the fact that nobody wants to pay $12.50 for a movie when they can pay something around $9 probably has something to do with it. I saw someone post they paid $7.50 and was like.. wow, I wish we could get it that cheap even with only a student discount, but I guess it's just pricier in general here.
I was BUSTING. A. GUT. At the "Ka-bloom!" part myself. I would be more inclined to see this movie if he actually did talk like that.

People in general are fucking disgusting, I'm the kind of guy that would literally clean up my table when I'm done at Mcdonalds, I'm also the kind of guy that wouldn't leave disgusting goo on the 3d glasses, I'd have the decency of trying to wash them in the bathroom or something. And 99% of people would point and laugh at me, what a fucking world we live in, THEY'RE FUCKING ANIMALS

U can't find 2D in your local theatres?? Geesh. I always make sure there's a 2d version. My theatre had both. And the glasses are always brand new fresh from the package.
I saw the 2D version. They're usually played first thing in the morning (9:30am in my case...) while 3D is shown later in the afternoon.

The 3D wasn't just in the Asgard scenes. Unless your projectionist screwed up. Which wouldn't be the movie's fault, but the movie theater's fault. Not that hard to believe when they don't even clean the glasses and when you can't see what's happening.
I saw it in 3D, and it was awesome. Very clear picture quality, very convincing depth effect. And it wasn't even close to double the price of a 2D movie ticket. Does the 3D add to the story? Of course not, but neither did the surround sound. Or the HD. Doesn't mean that any of that is pointless.
So don't confuse your bad movie theater with a bad movie.
Oh, and the epilogue obviously sets Stellan SkarsgÄrd up for a slightly bigger role in the sequel and/or The Avengers. As for the "what just happened" effect of that scene, things will be much clearer after Captain America.

I've seen it with two groups of friends, first in 2D then in 3D.
Not generally being a fan of 3D, I thought it was decent. Not sure what you meant about there not being much in the way of 3D effects. I had to take my glasses off occasionally (due to it pinching my nose some), and it was fuzzy without them on.
Still, all told I think I enjoyed it better in 2D only because the glasses are uncomfortable.
Oh, and on the subject of the glasses, the ones I was handed were fresh out of the dishwasher or whatever they use to clean them. Had no trouble with cleanliness. Next time that happens, just go up and demand a fresh set. Make a big enough stink about it and they may give you a free movie to placate you. Ah, nothing like the threat of bad press. :P

05.09.2011 - 02:02 | Bauzi*sigh* Sometimes you're so ridiculous. You act like a whiny little nerd. You know what? The 3D works GOOD in this movie. Here is why:
Because you hardly notice any side effects when you put down your glasses. You hardly will notice the double images. That's because not a lot of stuff is made like cardboard cutouts, but like actual 3D objects with depth. So the 3D enhances the image without distracting and I have to say that it really does this well. Be thankful that 3D is not mandatory for watching a movie!!!
You think 3D is pointless? Well than I say that 20:11, 16:9 widescreen, surround sound is pointless too. Oh 3D vision in life is kinda pointless too! You can live without it easily >.e internet.

05.09.2011 - 05:22 | nnecron
But the thing is, 3D rarely works on movies. In case of surround sound it almost always work. 3D effect hasn't developed enough to implement on a movie because it really requires intricate video adjusting.
And hearing a lot of people saying that 3D sucks means its effects aren't apparent for majority of people. Its still a thing that can only be enjoyed by people with acquired taste. This movie may be the exception, but it doesn't prove that 3D effects are useful for film making.
-
but he is a very entertaining nerd. Nevertheless, once you bring up Spidey 3 being better than Thor, I just sort of JEJ you, and walk away. Seriously, this movie is tremendous, Portman and Hemsworth have stupid level chemistry, and you get to go to a theatre where they serve you steak. Hush, sir! HUSH XD!

Actually... I'd say the post-credits bit worked, and you can kinda decipher what happened with the cask of endless winters after Loki brieefly used it to kill the gate guardian guy and then killed off the raiding party of frost giants tht had killing Odin on their minds, presumedly before they could ask for it back.

You'lld be surprised how many ambilexic people there are who simply CANT see those gimmicks. The day they charge me extra for a 3D presentation that will only make the movie look blurry to me, I'll verbally bitchslap the manager of that place...
-
05.09.2011 - 03:45 | NelaNReally nice review, really :)
You summed up nearly all important points. Good job there.
To me the "romance" also felt like: "You hawt!" - "Oh, you hawt, too!" - "So, let's make out?" - "Okay!" And the thing was clear.
It was really a pitty, since Portmans character was supposed to be clever, but she... Never was. Not really.
And about the 3D: That was really, really bad. I mean, the worst part is: I am living in Berlin, the biggest city in Germany. And NO THEATRE played the movie in normal 2D for the entire first week! And here are like 20 to 30 movie theatres!
But those theatres with 3D played it in 3Ds. Those who didn't have 3D didn't played it at all. And So I had to pay the double of what I normally pay for this shitty 3D-Effect. I mean, Asgard looked nice, but every thing else, as you said, didn't use the effect.
I really, really hope they won't do the same for PotC4. Because I swear to god, even if I have to wait a week to see it (and I am really, really looking forward to that movie) I WONT SEE IT IN 3D. I just wont!
-
05.09.2011 - 04:17 | Kaibaman
In Virginia the particular Theater I had to see with my dad, had both 3D and 2D, the interesting thing is in my theater(God know's I got pissed finding out I'm seeing the 3D Version) it strangely worked for me. Plus the action scenes didn't have a Jerky camera you seen all the action.
Funny that in the Cartoon Universe I think in Marvel Super Hero Squad, Loki even mentions to the effect that why is his adoptive brother still speaks in ancient Asgardian.
One interesting thing is in my Theater only has the 3D versions of Rio and Hoodwinked 2 BUT only 2 airings but I agree with Joe here, Y is the populace forced to go to other theaters, cities or even states just too see 2D versions.
OH and Joe in the Comics in the first avengers assemble Loki had control over Hulk I think it showed that ability in post credits+the Cosmic Cube is the main plot point in Captain America. But hey you do got to like Fury's talk of History telling us one thing and current events telling another.
One more thing, The guy that plays Loki is going to be in 4 more Marvel films due to the Contract he signed, The avengers being one of them.

I absolutely agree with Joe concerning the 3D-rant for this film and in general!
Unfortunately, one has to go to his AGS-page to watch this video, since all I get is the message box "Sorry, we're unable to play this episode." on TGWTG.
Some sort of ip-block, censorship or just some corporate guys easily offended by a little honesty? ^_^!
As for the ending I didn't find that confusing (WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T SEE THOUR IN THE NEXT FEW LINES). The Shield Agents recovered the Cosmic Cube (something that will be in the Captain America movie) and Loki uses Selvag to find out information on the device. Since that will also play a part in the Avengers movie where I'm sure we'll be getting more info on the cube and what it has to do with the plot of that film there.
