If you're looking for a good flight game, Ace Combat 5 for the PS2 was flipping [i]sweet.[/i]

Seconded the entire Ace Combat series could wipe the floor with Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. Even fires of Liberation had better storytelling and emotion than H.A.W.X 1 or 2.

Let's hope that the next game that I think is slated for next year is good, I am iffy about the removal of the "made up earth" setting for "real earth".

Great review, Joe! It was very informative and very funny (kudos for using Hot Shots!).

I've never been a flight simulator fan, simply because I could never get used to the controls. I prefer arcade/fantasy like shooters.

HAWKS is worst game ever, why? because it does nothing to envoke any sort of emotion for the player (expect regret for paying it). I found myself not caring about any aspect of this game and being bored as hell.

Could you recommend some flight sim games? The closest I've played are StarFox 64 and Warhawk.

Tho all Ace Combat games since 4 has been really good. If you like combat flight sim games, you should give this series a try.

Joe, you missed to mention what planes are available. I could guess that the F-18 is available, which is considered to be the fastest plane on the "market" at the moment. F-14's have been discontinued and have been sold to IRAN.

Anyways, it is very theoretically possible to escape a missile at mach 3 speed, if you got some skills I guess. I guess that flight simulators will never really get the physics engine they deserve, the military doesn't want you to know that the F-18 can go as fast as a a Stinger missile, and boy, they sure don't want you to know, it handles just as well, at those speeds.

F-18, a flying missile, that sure is crap. I hate that plane. And no Joe, you don't have the neck for it, :P , te cuidas vato.

I believe I haven't enjoyed a combat flight simulator as I much as the original Air/Ace-Combat series of PlayStation. These days the genre has really gone down, a mainstream flight sim games comes out about once a year top. HAWX 2 really doesn't sell it for me. Also loved the Hot Shots part =D !

My heart dies a little every single time I see or hear the word "Simulator" uttered on this page. Understand that Combat Flight Action Games =/= Combat Flight Simulators!

I am one who does in fact play some flight sims i.e. the Falcon 4.0 'descendants' Allied Force and FreeFalcon as well as il-2 Sturmovik. In fact, I'm also one of those looking forward to the upcoming DCS:A-10C. (Wanna taste of what's in store? Here's the manual http:// www.pantherden.net/users/ downloads/DCS%20A-10C% 20Flight%20Manual% 20EN.pdf. It's in Open Beta for those who pre-ordered apparently)

Now, my main gripe here is that these games here are being referred to as sims when they are most certainly not, even in the loosest sense of the word. I'm not dissing on the games themselves though. Hell, I thoroughly enjoyed HAWX 1 and Ace Combat X myself (no console other than the Wii and I lost my PSP a few years back). Just, please, refer to them by what these games are: Action games feat. Jets!

WTF are you talking about? NO [b]combat[/b] jet in the world can outrun a missile, much less go Mach 3 (except the MiG-25 that could theoretically reach Mach 3.2, but had a limit of Mach 2.8 to prevent the engines from dying). Missiles are evaded with maneuvering and countermeasures (jamming included). Besides, even you should know that the F-22 and F-35A/B/C are the newest and 'hottest' US jets now.


One last thing. This game (and any other Flight action games for that matter) gives the impression that dogfighting is just going in circles. That's somewhat true but there's more to it than that. Have you tried Blazing Angels? I rather liked that. Number one that is... Also a classic PC one you might enjoy is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. And I still own and use a joystick with Rogue Squadron. It's much more fun than with the keyboard.

I would not call HAWX 2 combat flight simulator as its more like combat flight shooter. Its not actually simulating flying fighter planes unlike actual combat flight simulators. Besides, in combat flight simulator air combat is only one part of game while simulating actual flying with all its difficulties is far more important.

Regardless I recommend you buy Freespace 2 from www.gog.com for $5.99 and then get the Freespace Open project with updated visuals and new highly polished user made campaigns :)

For me the best flight simulator was star wars rogue squadron 1 and 2.
I loved those games.

ace combat, ace combat, ace combat, ACE COMBAT! ACE COMBAT!! ACE COMBAT!!! ACE COMBAT!!!!!!!!! preferably ace combat 4 shattered skies for the ps2. the belkin war, or ace combat 6 fires of liberation for the xbox 360. all three incorporate story and game play together in a much better fashion then hawx-2. did I also mention that the games take place in an alternate dimension were it's set in our same timeline but the continents are completely moved around and named differently. and one of the super weapons is a GIANT RIFLE CANNON used to shoot down meteors from space.

Joe, I don't know if you know this but there's a game called Ace Combat which do have the landing and takeoff sequence and pretty awesome storyline. Thought you like to check that out. =D

The next AC game looks much better than HAWX2

heh, Ace Combat 3 from PS1 looks better than HAWX1 (not textures maybe but quantity of different effects and variety of scenery) and i'm pretty sure any Ace Combat flight _arcade_ past 3 is better than HAWX2 in any aspect.
