So far, I love this game. The customization is awesome and the multi-player has been loads of fun with the new armor powers. The daily and weekly challenges actually give me something to aim for and the rewards add up nicely. So yeah, completely bad ass.
I do agree that there a number of small technical issues that detract from the game's score, but overall is not a deal breaker.
The future is also open for further expansion on game types, so we will see what happens. Maybe Joe's dreams of ship-to-ship warfare will happen.

09.18.2010 - 22:27 | dyiYea, I wanted to buy a Halo game for the first time with all the ads and whatnot, I decided not to after this review. If it's just a refurbished Halo 2, meh. After playing CS for years now, I don't see me liking the shooting mechanics of this game (just spam the gun with occasional hiding; sorry if that's not the case; just looked like it in the gameplays I've seen); although riding the space vehicles seem really fun.

09.19.2010 - 15:35 | dyinot really. i understand why people downvoted, but from what I've seen, even in the gameplay from Joe's vid, all you do is hold on your attack button and just auto fire (again, this is what it SEEMS; thats what my friend does and he owns halo 1 and 2). doesn't work like that in cs, where although definitely not realistic, recoil comes into factor immensely and you can't just spam your guns. Feeling more realistic is more my style; although i do feel like i know where halo fans are coming from.

09.19.2010 - 15:33 | dyiFunny how stating opinions can get downvoted immensely. AngryJoe states for new fans to give this game a go, and this is my reply and it gets downvoted. Didn't even diss the game; just said it's not my thing and angry fans are all up at it huh.

09.18.2010 - 22:32 | Worst PlayerThough it seems that there is not a Legendary ending, there is an easter egg that is only available on Legendary. It is quite an interesting part, well worth the effort put into finding it. And nice job on the review. I already bought Reach and liked it immediately, and seeing your review made me feel better that I was not just seeing Reach with Halo-fan goggles.

09.18.2010 - 22:35 | YablukeNow, I wish I had the money to buy it now. Space Combat? You got me there, Bungie.

A good review.
Personally, Halo kind of just ran dry for me. Especially with the mediocre Halo 3(ODST). So I will be skipping this one. But good review anyway.
Though, I would be very interested to see another Halo Wars. Mostly due to the fact that the largest faults of the first game stemmed from how incomplete it was. If we get a sequel to Halo Wars, we could get the console RTS we always wanted.

I'm of a similar mind as VioletZer0. I never gushed hugely over the Halo series, but I didn't really mind it. I liked the first one well enough. It's enjoyable enough. I felt Halo 2's campaign was worse than the first's and I never could get into any Halo's multiplayer, so that's when I kind of stopped caring. I didn't pick up Halo 3, ODST, and I probably won't pick up this one either.
I'm not denying that it is probably quite a good game. I just can't get even remotely exicted for it. I'm just not interested anymore.
I'm glad Halo ended well for all the fans, at least as far as Bungie is concerned. Personally, I really think they should just stop here and leave it as is because, like you implied, it seems like a last hurrah for the series and it's good to end on something like that. However, Halo is too much of a cash cow for that to happen. It's going to be milked beyond dry, and I don't see any way for anyone to avoid that. Ah well, still, good review Joe. =)

09.19.2010 - 04:09 | ThatWhiteGuyIf there was one thing i disagree with , its that i don't think this is an appropriate way to end the franchise. i want to see how the fuck Master Chief gets back to earth and what the planet he was drifting towards was

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that would be a bad idea. It's like how The Force Unleashed tried to tie the Star Wars prequels and original trilogy together. Why would you WANT to remind everyone of the franchise's worst in terms of story and characters? Halo 3 was like that; it had many opportunities in terms of plot, but Bungie missed every single one of them, probably due to Microsoft pressure.
The main one was that the Prophet of Truth in Halo 2 seemed to be a lot more concerned about power than the Covenant religion, which was kinda interesting, but Halo 3 threw that out the window (along with his awesome voice) in favor of making him an outright delusional religious fanatic with the voice of a dried up old geezer. Due to this and other slip-ups, many levels felt like padding, the characters never really changed even in the ways anyone expected - like the Arbiter and MC not ever reconciling, or the Arbiter never mentioning that MC ruined his life but indirectly saved it - and very little was accomplished besides wrapping up the conflicts. There were only three good scenes: the storming of the Ark's control room, MC rescuing Cortana, and the end as they try to leave the Ark. That was really freaking far from saving the game's story.
All in all, Bungie made a smart move making their big bang to end their franchise (f Microsoft) a prequel, and not trying to salvage the main story where Halo 3 left off. Good move on their part, and may the Halo franchise rest in peace, because we all know that Gates' hellspawn will kill it and bleed it for money from here on out.

09.18.2010 - 22:36 | IAmAManjoe there is something in reach if you beat it on legendary, as the ending is playing hold the right stick to the right when you flash to one of the ships you see master chief in his tube all set up from where we came from( thank you rooster teeth =D )

Persistant war is probably the best idea I've ever heard. Do better = rank up = better armor and shields, and maybe the ability to eventually command your own ships and fleets, so you can go from planet to planet glassing all who don't accept your supreme leadership!
If they made only that a game, I would buy it.

Great review Joe, that is the kind of rating I would give it too.
I've played the entire series so far, except for ODST; so I had alot of expectations when I first got this game.
So far, it delivers as well as you say it does. I reccomend to everyone here to buy it and play it! It gets a 3.5 out of 4 in my scorebook too; but it isn't a truly legendary game like many expect it to be.
There are still things that annoy me about multiplayer; being a PC gamer at heart really makes doing well difficult, especially since I don't trust auto aim at all and think I have to keep manually putting the crosshairs on enemies when auto aim helps me do that. I'll miss often.
My favorite modes are Campaign and Firefight so far, but I do enjoy the matchmaking, it just can get annoying and frustrating from time to time.

Space Missions are to AJ what cherries are to Pacman: not essential but always worth an extra few points.
To be honest Joe, I've always been one of the 'meh' people when concerning Halo. I played the games and enjoyed them, but they never made me crazy or enthusiastic for the next one. And I swear if it weren't for Nathan Fillion's voice in ODST, I would've tossed it into the bargain bin at our garage sale (I can't help it, Fillion makes me a little gaga... shut up).
That being said, I would've given this game an extra point, personally. I'm not as crazy about multiplayer space missions as you are (probably because they always end with me exploding in some fashion), and I grew to like the characters, flaws and all, pretty quickly (even chatty Jun). However, this is just my personal opinion, and I tend to be a sap when it comes to characters and hopeless situations (which would explain why I played Mass Effect 2 ten-odd times).
In short, thanks for the great review, even if I differ on my own sappy points. This game is something I'm gonna enjoy for a long while.

09.18.2010 - 23:23 | SengI did see someone say that there is a special ending if you beat it with all data pads collected and all secret enemies killed on legendary (Maybe you need to have all of the skulls on too. Bungie might want to torture us.). I have no way to verify that, however. Might as well give it a try if you want to go through the painstaking task of actually doing all of that.
Anyways, good review Joe. I am enjoying the game, and I also thought they should have done something more with the space fight mechanics. Easily the best Halo campaign since the first game.
-
I don't think there was a special legendary ending, but there was a legendary easter egg. On the final cut scene before you have the all out fight at the end, if you hold down on the d-pad, you'll go to a shot inside the falcon that is taking off, where inside you'll see Master Chief sitting in the tube that he wakes up in on the first game.

09.18.2010 - 23:33 | Formula FoxBefore long there will certainly be a string of comments bashing this game and hating on Joe for liking it. Before those comments start, I want to remind people of the one UNDENIABLY AWESOME thing about Halo Reach:

09.18.2010 - 23:44 | HimmelgeherI still violently disagree with your ODST review. I've said this before, but some of us didn't have hard drives or the money to spend on those maps before ODST, not to mention the fact that it got you access to the beta of Halo: Reach. Oh, and it wasfucking amazing. But oh well. There were things that could have been improved on, sure, and I hope they will be in updates and DLC, but it hasn't replaced Halo 2 as my all time favorite game (I doubt any game ever will). I pretty much agree with the review this time.

09.19.2010 - 00:31 | kyuuketsukiAlright... I have to admit... when I had an Xbox... I really liked Halo 1 and 2... I was a huge fan.
3 seemed reminiscent of 2 so I was largely unimpressed... After that I sold my 360 and proceeded to buy a PS3 (I had to choose... and the BluRay player, MGS4, and imminent GT5 was enough to sell me more than everything the Xbox had to offer combined). Honestly.... This review and game makes me want to buy a 360 again... or steal my friend's... Either one really...
Great review Joe.
And now... everyone may proceed to vote me down for even daring to sell my 360 in lieu of a PS3.
(PS: This seems really fair to me.... PlayStation had its major franchise in MGS, which lasted for the same amount of games as Halo did before it became multiplatform, so it seems like a fair trade. And no, I am not counting ODST. ODST was like... GT5 Prologue... a shell of a game that should have never been full priced...)
I look forward to see what Bungie has in store for the future... If they DO make a space shooter and it isn't multiplatform... I may actually have to buy a 360 again....

09.19.2010 - 00:59 | 803scdantesIt should also be noted that you can't play online Firefight, online campaign co-op, share any of your videos, or view any of your friends videos with a new Xbox Slim 4gb. You apparently have to purchase an official xbox hard drive for $130 in order for it to work- regardless of how much memory you have available or if you have a hard drive plugged into your xbox. $130 to play some of the extra games is an awful lot to ask. You'd think the newest Halo game would be fully compatible with the new xbox's. Guess they just want to try to force everyone to buy some hard drives.

If you haven't caught wind of this check out this demo footage of a new MMO called Infinity.

If it's space battles you want, imagine thousands of players on this game in a vast environment to do battle in. You should make a video about this
P.S. every star you see in the vid can be visited
