08.31.2010 - 22:01 | SqueejeeWord: Epicgasm. A "gasm" of epic-ness.
Actually, I can't help but disagree with everyone on this site's apparent adoration of this movie - I found it above average at best, painfully dull at worst. So to present my views in a way that won't result in my internet castration, let me "compliment sandwich" this review...
So the movie has a LOT of ideas that are great - almost every aside and reference joke works without getting old, and result in the first 30 minutes being my favorite part of the movie.
But the action sequences, while each interesting in their own right, really drag after the third one. They should have cut out more of the boyfriends (my suggestions, #2, #3 and #4) and focused more of the movie time on character development while also developing the remaining fights further. I honestly felt cheated by the ending to every fight sequence, even though #3 was funny.
The music was AWESOME OH MY GOD THE SONGS WERE SO FUCKING GREAT THEY COULD HAVE EASILY SHOVED IN SHIT BUT THEY DIDN'T!
Back to the characters, I found everyone except Scott himself (and that guy Niel) forgettable and poorly developed and as much as you say you like Knives I can't help but feel like she was a doormat compared to everyone else, and her crowning moment at the end came out of left field.
The story was still fun and relevant despite the poor development overall, but suffered because of poor pacing - a natural result of transcribing the comic directly to cinema without shuffling the plot points around to make the movie go faster. There were long stretches in between the jokes and the action where I played with the gum stuck to the underside of my right arm rest because GOD did they drag!
But thank that same "god" character that the director here had the balls to innovate with the art style and jokes - my favorite being (spoiler alert... well, not really) where Scott is about to lie about remembering when he last had his hair cut and everything goes to silhouette while the narrator and an animated bit explain the situation. That's exactly the kind of humor I'd like to see more of in my cinema because it's fast, it's relevant to the plot, and it's funny!
Overall I'd award this movie a 7/10 - if you're into any one of the following things: indie rock, the internet, the 90s, anime, action, and/or video games, it's a MUST SEE, but most other people (including the person I was with) will walk away only mildly amused.

the songs???
god at the beginning of the movie the songs were horse shit (at least played by the bands)
the kardashian twins had an awesome bit
and the bass solo was pure epic
but the music didnt 100% hit me like i wish it did

Personally? I can't agree with you on the first 30 minutes things. I thought it set up the characters well enough to be explored in depth Post-Pattel, and again apparently I connected more with the story for whatever reason. However, I couldn't agree with you more on everything else, and either way I really enjoyed this movie, and in turn, your review good sir.
So yeah, I'm not going to argue a lot over the whole "message we don't want being bad" thing, *CoughcoughNeonGenesisEva ngelioncough* and I'm proud to say I respect your opinion as highly as my own, in that this movie still rocks. ...Spoony, on the other hand, might not take the negatives in your review so well...
What does "we don't want being bad" mean?
As in, A message that we don't want to hear (Like real life relationships and people aren't perfect, we're all gonna die, et cetra) being considered bad (As in the message itself considered "bad" simply for being negative.

09.01.2010 - 11:04 | mr_rubinoI say "meh" on the first 30 minutes. I thought the first 30 minutes was supposed to be a romantic comedy/date-movie bait-and-switch.
This is another reason why I feel there should have been 2 very focused trailers instead of the... mush that was the theatrical trailer.
Of course, remember Shaun of the Dead's tagline? A romantic comedy... with zombies. This is a romantic comedy... with emo kids jumping around kicking asses.

First off, the first 30 minutes were the best part of the film IMO. I won't go into it because it would take pages, but the first 30 minutes were definitely hilarious. I will say, however, without the first 30 minutes, the rest of the movie wouldn't have meant jack shit outside of action sequences.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best films ever made. It manage to largely capture the nostalgia and sentiment of a generation, work as an effective homage and parody of 80's, 90's and modern culture, incorporate many different artistic influences into one cohesive whole, and serve as an allegorical observation about the shortcomings and relational behavior of young adults in our current society. Not to mention it's completely hilarious and totally badass. The fact that it performed the way it did at the box office is a travesty and I hope someday the general public will realize what dumbasses they are and start throwing money at Edgar Wright in hopes he might make something half as good.
-
08.25.2010 - 22:58 | DreamingWingsI'd highly recommend reading the graphic novels. Ideally before you see the film. While it works on its own; I can understand not totally feeling a sense of connection with the plot and characters.
You really wouldn't think a film would have to cut so much story depth from 'only' six manga size volumes; but I for one kept having to mentally inject stuff from the source material to fully get into the plot. Fights scenes however; still freaking awesome!

There's like a 4 minute animation that was made for the movie that adds more backstory shown on AdultSwim.com. It pretty much emphasizes the mindset Scott Pilgrim is in at the first portion of the movie for those who haven't read the comics. I found it funny how average Natalie was at the beginning and how she turned out, then how it went with Scott and the drummer going out.
Maybe it'll be added back on in the extra features once it comes out on dvd.

Heeeyyy. I'm a girl and I saw it during the first week. I thought it was okay. The beginning really threw me off. That and not really liking the main characters. The fight scenes were cool and the references were fun but overall I just couldn't get into it. I thought the movie would start off kinda like a normal nerdy love story, then turn into an epic video game saga after the evil ex's showed up. If they had done that, and made Scott more surprised by the video game aspect of it and made him more nerdy than jerky, then I probably would have loved it... But hey, at least I got wowed by Inception this year ^_^
-
08.25.2010 - 23:04 | JTown465I'm going to say that the first 30 minutes is supposed to be bad, but NOT because the book says so. I felt it was to sort-of lure you into a false sense of what the movie was just to SMACK YOU IN THE FACE and completely change your expectations.
I agree that the story wasn't well converted from comic to movie, as the comic's story went over one or two years. BUT! I feel the movie is the greatest adaptation I've seen, because it doesn't try to dumb it down for audiences, it just takes the exact style from the book, and adds similar instances to keep fans on their toes.

I was sort of the opposite of you, Joe. The first half of the movie kept me thoroughly entertained. Sometime around the 4th evil ex or so, I sort of started coasting. Don't get me wrong, it was a great movie, and I recommend it to anyone under the age of 30. Still, I was kind of pissed at the predictability of the ending.

I don't see why everyone hates the first 30 minutes. I was actually impressed how much they kept from the comic during that timeslot. I know the video game parodies are what we all love most about it, but I for one actually did care about the story. I thought the parts introducing the characters were brilliantly handled.

I don't understand why you say he was supposed to be with Knives. He was only with her because it was simple. He didn't need to try. Hell, she paid for the dates. When Ramona came along he fell in love and fought for her because he saw a real relationship with her. Knives was still rebound from Envy (Natalie). Scott and Knives are clearly meant to be friends.

I also think that Scott should have ended up with Romona.
There will be spoilers
At the beginning of the movie all his friends tell him exactly why Knives and him won't work, and why he is a jerk for even entertaining the notion. He's getting off of a horrible breakup with Envy and needs to feel better about himself.
In order to do that he decides to date a 17-year old girl who will adore him no matter what he does because she doesn't know any better.
"I just wanted something simple"
If Scott's life had a face I'd punch it.
Wallace tries to warn Knives but Knives being Knives. "Run. You're too good for him" "Huh"
Then Scott starts to get bored with Knives because there is no challenge. He doesn't need her anymore to feel better about himself. After that Ramona comes in, a girl who is a challenge, a girl he has to fight to win, literally and metaphorically. She high-lites everything that was wrong with the Scott-Knives relationship to begin with and even hints that she started dating Scott for the same reason he was dating Knives, "I just wanted something simple."
Knive's most awesome heartbreaking and heartwarming moment is when she realizes that she is "to cool for Scott" despite the fact that she still cares for him.
Of course all of this is opinion so yeah who cares what I think. It's all pointless shipping . It's still an awesome movie at the end of the day.

Scott thinks he sees something in Ramona worth loving, but I feel he's really looking to her as a means of guidance. Scott has little direction and sees an opportunity for someone else to give him one in Ramona. That's not love; that's dependency. I believe this is key to understanding why Scott performed the way he did initially near the end.
In actuality, Ramona is just as lost as Scott, but significantly more "world weary." She feels she's been around and back and still doesn't know what she wants. She possibly only sees something in Scott because he seems willing (by the end) to not let her poor past decisions define her. Once again, that's not love, that's dependency.
Knives started as a simple relationship about which Scott had to think little, but ultimately the two have much in common, particularly in that the both of them seem to be in the same place in regards to maturity and social adeptness. They both have a lot of room to grow and mesh well enough to grow together. From that love can develop as they learn and experience life together from the similar viewpoints.

I highly recommend the graphic novels. They have the same story but the plot is a lot more detailed.
I obviously preferred the graphic novels over the movies but I still thought the movie was awesome.

I actually want to see it, but currently it isn't showing at the local theater. I guess that's how bad it bombed. I might see if any of the other theaters are still showing it. If not, I'll just get the DVD when it comes out.
You know, these kind of things do happen, I mean Who Framed Roger Rabbit didn't do well at the box offices and didn't get popular until it was on video for about 3 years. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of other great movies that didn't do so well.
By the way, Joe, how was the video game verson on Xbox live?

I'm a girl and I saw it! Originally, I wasn't going to see it because the trailer looked awful to me and I'm not a Michael Cera fan. Boy am I glad my friend dragged me in to see it. XD
And I absolutely agree with you on the first 30 min of the film, especially since I didn't find anything funny, the jump cuts were annoying, it felt rushed, and I was getting sick of looking at Cera's face and wishing we had more Wallace. Then came the first fight and everything really kicked off from there. I understand that it was good for getting to know our characters and to get used to this surreal world, but I was bored to tears with it (then again, this seems more to be a 'your mileage may vary' bit).
