Before I begin the review, let me explain why there hasn't been one of these in a while. After my Fred rant a couple weeks back, I almost experienced burn-out from blogging. I don't know how, but I just didn't feel like it for a while. In fact, my last blog was on Manic Expression, and even that was about a week ago. But I think the main reason was that I saw a few reviewers who didn't limit their reviews to just movies or just comics or anything like that. They added more "media", if you will, to change things up a bit. So for the sake of variety, I'm not only going to review movies from now on, but also TV, music, and the occasional YouTube video, and hopefully it'll work out. With that said, allow me to introduce this new era the only way I know how:
Hello and welcome to Constructive Revolution, taking a stand against bad media. You know what's ironic about the new intro? This is actually going to be a positive review. After all, I like to mix it up. But what's really weird is that I'm going to talk about "Teen Titans" for the second time in about five blogs. And what better way to begin this new era than by doing something I haven't done yet: reviewing an episode of a show from about a decoade ago? Now, I said before that "Teen Titans" was a good show when it was around, but it wasn't until recently that I actually sat down to watch an episode on YouTube. What I found was a "Raven episode." Not only that, but it was probably one of the more serious episodes in the series' history. And that's saying a lot considering which character is the focus. So how does this episode hold up? Well, join me as we look at 'Spellbound.'
Now, since I'm dealing with a TV episode as opposed to a movie, this will be more linear than my other reviews. Also, in case you haven't seen this episode or "Teen Titans," there are major spoilers ahead. With that said, let's begin.
The episode begins with Raven reading a thousand-year-old tale of a sorceror named Malchior (voiced by Greg Ellis...like you actually care lol) saving a kingdom from a dragon. As she gets to the climax, the Titans are summoned to battle a...heart...monster. Foreshadowing? The Titans get their butts handed to them until raven quickly dismantles the monster, hurries back to the Titan's car (I don't remember what it's called, but I don't care either), and is desperate to get back to the tower to finish her book. As she's reading, though, she's distracted by the others. Robin wants to know why she was so anxious to get back to her room; Starfire wants to get makeovers with her; and Beast Boy and Cyborg want her to referee a game of what they call "stinkball" (it's just a ball of dirty socks...typical). She refuses each of their offers in order to finish her story. Beast Boy gets offended and, in a fit of rage, calls raven "creepy." Well, considering she's basically a demon voiced by a unicorn, I wouldn't be suprised (lol). ...What? Can't I have a little fun? Anyway, BB's words get to Raven and, heartbroken, she returns to her reading. As this is happening, the book starts speaking to her. It's revealed that the book is actually Malchior, who is imprisoned in the book because of a curse the dragon put on him. He says that he is the only one who understand Raven and even starts to compliment her. And thus, a "romance" begins that is 10 times better than Twilight could even begin to scratch the surface of. The next day, BB apologizes for what he said, but to his suprise, he hears Raven laughing. Gasp! Raven...LAUGHING??? IT'S A SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE!!! Again, just having fun with this. But I digress. She later answers the door and tries to hide what's she's been doing and tells him to leave. Malchior then reveals to her that she is the only one who can free him from the book, to which she accepts, telling him that she'll do whatever it takes to free him. He goes on to teach her everything he knows, and somehow, this brings peace to her life, as well as her changing her dark clothes to white. Might be symvolism for something, but I'm not sure. Afterwards, the monster returns, and it's once again up to the Titans to save the day. Raven does what she did the last time, only she does more harm than good (the monster had kidnapped a little girl before this happened). Realizing the damage she almost caused, she goes back to the tower to confront Malchior, telling him that the spells she had learned were a part of "dark magic," which she never uses. He responds by convincing her that the "magic," like Raven, is "misunderstood" and that she was still "alone." This breaks her, and she finishes the spell to free Malchior. However, in an interesting twist that even I forgot about, it's revealed that Malchior wasn't the sorceror in the book, but rather, the dragon. Of course, she tries to stop the beast from coming out of the book, but it's too late. The others find out what happened and try to stop Malchior while Raven has lost the will to fight. And of course, the Titans get their butts handed to them. Finally, Raven decides to join the fight and despite everything, manages to get Malchior back into the book. After everything is said and done, Beast Boy goes to Raven and tries to comfort her. In fact, allow me to quote part of what he said: "You're WAY creepy, but that doesn't mean you have to stay locked in your room. You think you're alone, but you're not.' And to the audience's suprise, she hugs BB, which pretty much ends the episode. And no, this doesn't mean a love relationship between BB and Raven. That would be weird, even for this show.
So what do I think of this episode? Well, even though this is the first episode of the show that I've seen in a while, I think it's actually one of the best. Sure, the show might be known for its humor, but this one keeps it tame. It's more serious than most of the other episodes, dealing with such issues as obsession, insecurity, and deception. On top of that, I want to say that this is one of Tara Strong's best performances...and I've sat through "The Return of Harmony"! All I can say is, the show's for kids, but this proves that it can take its audience seriously and that adults can get into it also. Will I try to watch every episode? Probably not. But I definitely recommend checking "Teen Titans" out, especially this episode.
