Film Review: "Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead"

in Film Review

If I ever get to achieve some sort of Internet celebrity status in my current life-time before reincarnating into a “Sweet Transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania”, one of my goals would be to round up into one room all the most infamously renowned video-reviewers of the moment (such as Oancitizen, Phelous and JesuOtaku, to name a few), sit among them on a comfortable sofa and get them to watch a 2011’s Japanese flick by the name of “Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.” Their frightened and painful expressions and sudden tendency to ritual disembowelment after witnessing the sheer level of unworldly grotesqueness this film has to offer, would indubitably make my own sorrow feel slightly less grating.
If the actual title didn’t already work as a (not so)fair warning of horrible things to come, the piece in question can better be described as a “proud” member of the alien tentacle/zombie exploitation sub-genre (yes, there is one), a brand of hardcore trash gory b-movie finesse that director Noburo Iguchi seems to specialize with.
Genius at work...

At this point I could easily stop writing this review and tell you to avoid any physical and/or psychological contact with this particular product quite literally defecated from the dirtiest bowels of Nippon. In fact, I should be absolutely clear about the point I want to make without circling it ambiguously for too long: you don’t want to see this film. You might be inclined to seek it out of genuine curiosity or just to “enrich” your personal “things I’m never going to show to anybody” collection, but, truthfully, it’s just not worth it. This little gem will not only pulverize every perceptible ounce of your grey matter, but it will disgust you, repel you and push your mind to the edge like only the best “So Bad it’s Not Funny” movies will ever manage to be.
Let me put that statement into perspective by proposing a unique comparison with a rather heated milestone of filmmaking controversy. Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Salò” (which you might know of if you studied cinema) was a fierce, unapologetic, rage-induced denunciatory outcry against modern society that chose a very peculiar Marquis de Sade-inspired allegory in order to represent said resentment. To be more specific, this magnum opus was a three hours-long 1970’s “artsy” exploitation film that depicted the symbolic figures of all the economic, political and religious powers torturing young people via mass rape, faeces-based meals and sadistic dismemberment.
Now, if said film’s level of uncomfortable horridness was not only a hundred times superior but also completely deprived of its underlying theme in favour of an insanely gratuitous form of kinky comedy that utterly fails at being remotely funny, you would basically have the heavily-censored version of “Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.”
With that said, let us delve into it.
Our story begins with a group of stereotypical teenagers entirely comprised of an otaku with severe stomach issues, an imposing harlot that constantly acts like she owns the place, a very generic airhead, her ridiculously thug-ish boyfriend whose favourite activities are either rape or drug addiction, and the even more generic sailor-type school uniform-wearing main heroine with a tragic past - you know, otherwise we wouldn’t know this film takes place in Japan.
Xenophobia +999

Apparently, the “princess-type” of the lot is after some sort of parasitic worm that should prevent her from gaining weight upon ingestion, therefore she has the “brilliant” idea of dragging the rest of her so-called friends to the usual cell phone-incapacitating, undisclosed location that you might have seen in any horror movie ever made. She finds the aforementioned parasite, she swallows it and later on she gets caught by exploding diarrhoea - way to go, Captain Genius.
Epic Fail

It’s pretty much at the time were she exposes her fine air-expelling behind for a “sexy” close up inside a hillbilly cesspool in the middle of the forest, that this movie really starts to show its “cinematic prowess.” To be precise, a perverted zombie covered in human excrements comes out of the shithole in order to grab her dirty booty.
On that note, I really, really do hope you love fart jokes more than anything in your life, because the rest of the movie pretty much revolves entirely on gas-leaking shticks and several more “colourful” props coming out of human anuses for about two hours of total running time.
It turns out that a local psychotic scientist made a pact with a race of alien ultra-bodies in order to prolong the life of his even more psychotic (yet sickly) daughter: in exchange for hosts to possess (a la “Ganados” from “Resident Evil 4”) the worms would provide some sort of contrived death-delaying symbiosis with the little girl. Luckily for us, the improvised Sailor Senshi of the movie is on the case and she happens to know martial arts.
Insert "Master of Martial Hearts" joke here

Thus, in between sporadic scenes of lesbian fan-service with the airheaded best friend, ludicrous death scenes and the customary flashback that revealed her little sister committed suicide because bullies forced her to fart (there we go), she manages to survive the alien zombie outburst and kill off the parasite queen by using her own inner gas as rocket fuel for a mid-air “Dragon Ball Z” battle to the death.
It should be also mentioned that the rest of the flick is filled with memorable scenes such as our heroes getting attacked by said ultra-bodies drilling their way out of the Ganados’ decomposing posteriors, more farting shenanigans enriched by surprisingly dull fatalities, and a girl getting raped to death by tentacles coming out of another girl’s anus…
I cannot show you... sorry, it's for your own good

This movie is confounding to say the very least, not just because of its over-the-top contents of utter repulsiveness, but also due to its tragic lack of consistency. The brain-damaging amount of juvenile humour and “old-school” misogynistic portrays of women in this type of gory bottom-of-the-barrel grindhouse production, although thoroughly unfunny, annoying and repetitive, would give this flick the somewhat idiomatic feel of a meta-linguistic parody. Sadly, the presence of multiple anal tentacle rape scenes and the suchlike, drastically turn the tides of the movie from “trying to be funny in a lazy, ineffective way” to just plain “uncomfortably cruel for no good reason.” The ideal coup de grace comes in the form of the heavily misplaced climax, where the main character and the villain go Shounen Jump on us: it might have worked well (not) if the rest of the film had the kind of self-amusing grotesque Gainax-like vibe to be contextualized with instead of regurgitating the worst bits from the more hardcore segments of the hentai genre.
In the end, director Noburo Iguchi just went on and threw whatever he wanted into his movie, thus resulting in an atrocious display of wasted talent (because he seems to be pretty good in handling montages and cheap special effects, apparently) that wants to be funny but it’s not, and wants to be sexy but it’s definitely not. This sort of mind-derailing blob can only be enjoyed by a very “dedicated” kind of audience.
I did not like it, by the way. Live-action tentacle porn just doesn’t work for me.
-
My score for “Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead” is:
“Just a Flesh Wound”: That darn bad.
-
Just avoid this movie. Go find “Deadball”, instead. It’s Baseball with cartoonish ultra-violence and spectacular bloody jokes.
You should be able to laugh at it.
Bye.

As a quasi follow-up to my previous lists based on oddity in video games (Enemy attacks and customs/tendencies), this time, we are looking at game elements that have real world applications yet have dissimilar effects in video games. Whether it is deliberate developer design or just whimsy on the programmer's part, I'm sure we can all agree that these following objects don't do quite what they should!

Using well-known power-ups that just have odd or unrealistic effects (SMB Mushrooms/Mega Man 2's Metal Blade) but are limited to video games would make the list too long and probably not very interesting. For example, you can't say that PacMan's power pellets are odd because you can't chew animal food pellets and have a similar effect in real life, but no one would expect them to. (Don't forget alcohol in a myriad of games; sorry college freshman...)

As always, this is my list and only includes games that I've played. If you have a suggestion, make a comment below or consider making your own list on the topic.

So, as part of a New Years resolution, I set out to have an active YouTube channel, and I quickly settled on making videos about games because... well, I like games. This is my second effort at a video, so I'm still new to the whole process, but I'd love some constructive feedback on how to improve my style. I'm making these for fun, but there's nothing wrong with trying to make them enjoyable for others, too.

Right, first off lets clear up any confusion you might have by the title; I’m not talking about last years (2011) film Drive, that stars Ryan Gosling, nor am I referring to the very short lived TV series that starred Nathan Fillion (though that was awesome itself). I’m talking about the 1998 film DRIVE starring Mark Decascos (yep the Iron Chef) and Kadeem Hardison. It was a direct-to-DVD release and if you’ve seen it your opinion will probably be affected by what region you bought the film in…

DRIVE was one of those unfortunate films that was unlucky enough to have been tampered with by a producer before release; so from day one it was 22 minutes lite of character development and sporting a fresh new techno soundtrack:… because action films apparently don’t need character development, it’s not like you want to care about them or have a varied soundtrack that fits the mood of the scene at hand, people want action so let’s get from one fight to the next ASAP… Right I’m drifting off topic, 2 versions of this film were released, the producer’s cut that America got and the director’s cut (The director being Steve Wang... but more on him another time). The director’s cut was the film as it was meant to be, soundtrack restored along with the missing minutes, and that’s what I’m mostly reviewing, I’ll summarise the plot differences, and if you haven’t seen that version or the film at all just go buy it… I got mine for £1.99 of amazon a few years ago.

So yeah, I decided to talk about 1992 after all.  1992 is a year you should familiarize yourself with when it comes to gaming.  Sure, there were a lot of cool things going on in the console world, but the PC gaming market was especially interesting.  I already briefly went over Terminator 2029 and Gun Buster, so let's go over what ELSE came out this year.

While it is going to be fairly obvious who takes home the gold this year, this was the first year to actually have a lot of FPS titles, many of which are...well, at least passable.  Okay, no, there wasn't anything mindblowing this year, but it was still a decent year, all things considered.  With that said, let's hop right into it!

Blake Stone - Aliens of Gold

Blake Stone's not a bad game, actually.  It's got some fairly interesting concepts to it and it's made by Apogee, who did plenty of oldschool PC action games, including the older Duke Nukem titles.  Great game?  No, but still pretty fun.

Retro review for the beloved computer roleplaying videogame Chrono Trigger (1995) for the SNES / SFC by Square. This version is the Playstation re-release that was part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles (2001) bundle with FF4.

Chrono Trigger was created by Square's "Dream Team" division, which was led by Hironobu Sakaguchi (who created the Final Fantasy series). The game was written by scenario writers, Yuji Hori (creator of the Dragon Quest games) and Masato Kato (later directing both Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross; wrote much of Xenogears and XenoSaga I & II), and character designer Akira Toriyama (of Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball and also pretty well known for his Dragon Quest concept art). All of the game's music was composed primarily by Yasunori Mitsuda (later known for his breathtaking music in Xenogears, Crono Cross, and XenoSaga) under the watchful eye of Nobuo Uematsu (the best known Final Fantasy music composer).

As a result of this combination of legendary talent, Chrono Trigger is often regarded as one of the best games for the Super Nintendo / Super Famicom.

Horrible Horror #19 - Mega Piranha (2010)

Well, as promised, I finally return after several setbacks to bring you more fun. In the spirit of last episode, we're focusing on a couple more production companies that keep spewing out crap - this time, The Asylum gets a jab as we take a look at the atrocity that is Mega Piranha.

Yeah, I count monster movies as horror most of the time, even if this doesn't always quite look like a straight out horror flick. That oughta change, however, when I take a look at Full Moon next time. I have a couple in mind, but you're more than welcome to suggest a Full Moon movie you'd like to see covered - who knows, you might be aware of one more horrible than what I have in mind.

As a continuation of our last show, this week we go into the 5-man raid and look at it as a team event.  We explain the jargon used, the positions of the players, and give some tips for new players on surviving your first dungeon.

In other related news, I've been livestreaming the MUD2MMO show live from Azeroth!  You can find that on twitch.tv for now.  Also have a facebook page as well.  Feedback is, as always, welcome and encouraged!

After the last episode we thought maybe we should tune down the bit of controversy in Episode 5. Then we thought “Fuck that!” It’s funnier this way.

So this week we talk to a good friend/editor eXthMODE. We talk a bit about The Deadliest Warrior, Zombies, some controversial idea and South Park. And just when you thought it was all done, what is that in the distance? Puppet porn?

That's it! I can't find a real job so I look and look and look some more! I've been searching for nearly half a year, again! And yet I can't find a steady job! I have no gas in my car, my girlfriend is all the way on the other side of the country and I can’t afford things I need like shoes let alone things I want. I worked and have been waiting 3 weeks for a check that should have been here a week ago! That's it I'm going Postal 2!

Alright after a week or so I have finally gotten Friday done! And that is the end of Postal 2, so let's get down to business.

P.S. I apologize for the bits of silence during the first mission. I was concentrating and upset. It got better.

To Do:
Get Alternator
Pick Up Package
Uncle Dave's B Day
Go to Clinic

Ok so that was the end of Postal 2, and if I get my way when Postal 3 comes out I'll do it again! but for now I need a new side project, which is what these are to me, a fun side project. So hey here is another video asking what do you want me to play next? So here is the video! Let me know, please! Thanks for watching so far! I love you guys.

Episode 34: Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon Protagonists.
 • Baba Yaga cosplays as Diana.
 • Hank the Ranger
 • Diana the Acrobat
 • Eric the Cavalier
 • Presto the Magician
 • Shelia the Thief
 • Bobby the Barbarian
 • Uni, who appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
 • Character Sexuality
 • Conclusion
Upon review I made a couple of mistake; (1) the characters do uses the weapons directly against an enemy, such as when Hank uses bolts of force from the bow to know away lizard men. However, this is rare.(2) Second, I mispronounce a couple of names, including the title of the Citadel of Shadow episode and Cosar, Diana's apparent soul-mate. However, editing this episode was a bear and I did not want to have to rerecord the audio and edit it all together again.

Twisted Metal is a game after my own heart! Seriously the game is trying to kill me!

But ever since I was a kid I liked this series, and that is really all because of bad parenting, seriously a 9 year old playing Twisted Metal 2? That would fuck you up! But seriously Twisted Metal won me over as a kid for the twisted view of the world and outrageously intriguing characters. Mr. Grimm being my absolute favorite but since Twisted Metal Black I've had a serious problem with the series. In my opinion and that is all this is I really would have preferred them to keep the less than serious feel of the games where the Grim Reaper drives a motorcycle, a flaming headed clown demon drives an ice cream truck and a man is trapped between 2 wheels that would put any monster truck to shame.

So to go a little further in my thoughts let's cut to me in a car!

I guess you could say I'm being a little childish wanting this game to be like the old ones and hey this could be the best Twisted Metal to date, but I'm still just a little disappointed that Mr. Grimm has to (Still Opinion) suffer for it.

Rendering the shortest video is taking my computer longer and longer and really it's kind of annoying to wait 2 hours for a 10 minutes video. But sadly my job won't call me so I can't either buy a back up hard drive to clear things out or see if there is a way I can actually fix it. And really if I don't get some cash soon I'm going to go Postal 2! So in honor of Thor's day, let's smite people.

TO DO:
Get Napalm
Get Krotchy
Get Steaks
Pay Ticket

Fun Fact other than Thor's Day is actually the original of the name of Thursday. I actually messed up on editing and forgot the opening to Thursday. It wasn't anything special but it threw off the time frame and sadly it wasn't there. Friday's will be there but I'm an idiot and I'm sorry! So please enjoy Thursday!

Friday comes next week!

What a week...

So this week's show is about marketing and branding and how it relates to paintball.  This show was actually spurred on by a different video entirely from last week.  So some backtracking is needed here.  I know that some of you folks don't play paintball, I'll try to not go too far over the head here.

This all comes from a video last week.  A viewer of the show gave me a link to a "Paintball Sniper" comp that's being held.  I have a long standing disdain for the so-called "sniper" crowd for many reasons.  One of the biggest is that they use the term "Sniper" and most don't know what a sniper actually does.  They put on the funny suit and pretend to be a bush all day, shoot 1-2 people, and be incredibly happy about it.  For reference, this is kinda like showing up to a race track, putting on the cool logo suit, and hanging out in the driver's seat and never starting the engine.  But that's another thing entirely.

So making a video thats' critical of a sniper event, this brings out the "Douchy McNitpick" of paintball, where it's all about their expectations, their wants and desires, selfishly all about them.  So I wrote, recorded and started editing a q hour rebuttal to them about why what they claim to do is not what they do.  Then I realized it was an hour long.  And even my hardcore fans won't watch an hour of programming.

These are the situations where things are just unfair for seemingly deliberate reasons, like the devs wanted to make the game harder, but not hard in a fair way. I tried to avoid any multiplayer antics, as there is always a cheap way to play with friends.

Combat Arms Review

in Video Games

There's a lot of free First Person Shooters out there, too many to talk about right now, but today I want to talk about my favorite... Or former favorite. Whatever! This, is Combat Arms!

For those of you none the wiser, Combat Arms is, (of course), a free first person shooter developed by Doobie Studios, and published by Nexon, (who also created the well known Maple Story). It was released in 2008 after a short beta. The game has become rather successful, garnering around 5,000,000 players, not bad for a free game! It also has generally positive reviews.

Enough with the history, let's talk about the game, starting with the lobby system.
One thing I was going to talk about with this game was the AMAZING lobby system it used to have. Easy to read servers, easy to understand lobby system. If you played it, you know what I mean, it was better than lobby systems in mainstream games like Call of Duty, or even Valve's games... Then they had to ruin it. They released a major update that completely redesigned it, not what do we have. Grey, grey, and, you guessed it, MOREFRELLING GREY!!!! Not only this, but everything is SO much harder read, weapons are impossible to sort through in the store, and now al the NXweapons are mixed in with the GP weapons... Ugh, NX points. We'll get to that later, but I should probably explain the weapons system.

The way the purchasing system works in this game is quite different than most games. You still get money, or as it's known in game, GP, (gear points), to get your items. The thing that is different is that you actually RENT your weapons and items, the longer the rent, the more expensive. This is actually rather nice because you can spend a small amount of money on a weapon to try it out before you invest in a longer rental. You can also get things like a bigger backpack to carry more weapons, bigger grenades, or jackets to make you run faster or take less damage. It's not a bad system, but one of it's major flaws is the NX system.

The NX points system is your average, "real money," currency to buy in game items. I get that, it's a free game, they gotta make money somehow right? The problem is that there are SO many exclusive, weapons that have MAJOR advantages over the normal weapons. Like the ability to purchase a character that runs significantly faster as a normal character, equip her with a minigun, and a grenade launcher to completely demolish all the normal players in the lobby. It's annoying. Speaking of this character, take a look at this: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20101107051411/combatarms/images/thumb/f/f6/Viper%27s_Reveal.jpg/180px-Viper%27s_Reveal.jpg that makes sense right? Covering your whole body, EXCEPT YOUR CHEST AND HEAD! But of course we HAVE to have tits in this game right?!? Anyway, back to the NX system, if they balanced it more, I wouldn't have a problem, but as it stands now, you can make yourself a super soldier and squash the normal players like bugs.

The gameplay is pretty standard, you have traditional modes like Free for all and team deathmatch, (Elimination and One Man Army respectively), as well as other classic modes like Search and Destroy or Capture the flag. There are also a few special modes like fireteam, (a campaign style set of levels, or infection survival levels), and Quarantine, (a "zombie" mode very similar to the counter strike mod).

In the regular modes, you kill all the enemies until a set score limit, enemies take more than a standard amount of damage, more than games like Call of Duty, but less than games like Team Fortress 2 or Halo, (in regards to player health, not gameplay). There is no regenerating health and a pretty straightforward stamina system that drains when you sprint. As mentioned earlier, you can use a large selection of guns that can be unlocked and rented from the in game store. You can equip these with attachments like silencers and acog scopes, and extended mags (the only time you get to aim your weapon is with some kind of scope). Your character can usually carry 2 -3 weapons, which can all be primary or secondary weapons, depending on what you want. It's straightforward old school FPS fun, it can be very enjoyable, and VERY frustrating. Like when somebody keeps killing you from the same camping spot before you can fire off a single shot at them. GOD that pisses me off. When it comes right down to it, this is the games core and it gets most of it right.  A few mechanics could be tweaked, but its still quite playable and enjoyable, even if you have a library of retail games.

The special modes are hit and miss, fireteam, which is actually more like two game modes in itself, is a perfect example for this. The goal is to get to a certain place, basically point A to point B, passing some checkpoints on the way, (this is where dead players respawn and extra lives are granted). It's all right, but the thing holding it back is its' difficulty. You face HUNDREDS of enemies, all of which are pretty deadly in the harder modes and almost always drop grenades at there death. You'll face some cheap deaths sometimes. It's annoying. Then there is the wave survival where you fight "infected", Zombie like creatures who have LOADS of health. No, seriously, your in a little house, (in the first map), fighting off these guys and they take a LOT of bullets to kill. Then the exploding zombies come, and the grenade dropping zombies, and the tank like zombies. It's hard. But... Surprisingly, it's kind of refreshing! It's hard to beat! Unlike a lot of wave defense where the enemies are MUCH weaker than you. Hard? Yes, Fun? Most of the time, yet frustrating at others. Then there is the other mode, quarantine. In this mode you start out as a group of humans, than 2 or 3 will mutate into the infected. In this form, you are stronger, faster, and can regenerate your health. When this mode was first released, it was near impossible for humans to kill the infected, but through a series of updates, it has become much easier. The coolest thing about this is being a human, becoming infected, and then turning on your teammates who were previously helping you. The goal is simple, as infected, infect all the humans, as human, either kill the infected, or survive the time limit. It's a BLAST to play, it's a very fun game mode and I absolutely love it.

Well that's the basic rundown of the game there are some more things to it, but you can find those out for yourself! Overall I'd give this game an 80% or around that threshold. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an old school type FPS with a modern twist. You can get it at http://combatarms.nexon.net/ (American) or http://en.combatarms.nexoneu.com/Intro.aspx (UK). Have fun!

Oh, and I can't forget this: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/nutshotcombatarms_580.jpg

As a followup to my previous list, here we are taking a look at the moments when it is THE PLAYER that has all the advantage, be it through abusable strategies or overpowered moves. For the most part, we are avoiding using unlockable super weapons or abilities and combinations you get from grinding for hours, as making the game much easier is kind of their point. Enjoy!

As always, I'm sure there are powerful weapons in games like Portal or Halo and others I haven't played, so no complaints that your favorites aren't on the list. Can't mention it if I haven't played it!

Just a quickie list style blog, just to put it out there.  This is stuff that I liked over the years, and wanted to share with everyone.  And yeah, this is a list of older stuff, I may do a more modern one later.  This isn't an ultimate list, I just want to toss it out ther as stuff that you should take an hour out of your life and listen to this stuff.  And I'm going a little "hipster obscure" here, because I'm assuming most people have HEARD a song by Rush before so I don't need to get into them.  Or I may have to do another of that kinda stuff too, no clue.

#5 : Masayoshi Takanaka : Plumed Bird

One of my favorite "who is this guy?" guitarists ever. Hiis work goes way back to the 1970's, but I believe this is him in 2009 (I think, I can't read Japanese).  I stumbled into him at a video rental store when I found "Rainbow Goblins Story", and then proceeded to scour the record stores for the CD.  Yeah, it was a long time ago.  Amazing player who really deserves more recognition outside of Japan.

This song is the climax of the album, which is a concept piece in itself.  If you can find Rainbow Goblins live at the Budokon, listen to it, it's well worth an hour of your life.  It's actually introduced me to his later work, which is more jazzy and blusey, and I wish I could show you some of that but most of those vids are down off of youtube.

in What's Up?

I guess I should explain myself here.  Kinda.

Yesterday's blog wasn't normal for me.  The thing is that the show I've been doing is not that controversial, usually.  Granted it's only in 6 shows deep, but I'm not hitting stuff like that weekly.  It was a part of the rainbow review project, and as such I knew going into it that it wouldn't be the most happy / fluffy thing in the world.  Am I backpeadling, hell no.  but I don't want to give the impression that I'm full of spit and vinegar all the time and this is my normal thing.

Well, not in gaming anyway.  I do a paintball show multiple times a week, shorts if you will, and those are a little louder than the gaming stuff but still not as "real world controversial" as the last vid.  If you guys wanna see it I'll mirror vids here as a "best of " kinda thing, but I didn't think that this is the audience for that.  But even there, I lkike controversy but just in paintball.  A lot of bad stuff happens in that sport that I go after, but nothing that really escapes the game mechanics.

So if you're poking your heads in hoping to see more of the "Anti-whatever" rants, I'm going to be disappointing you I'm afraid.  On one hand I don't mind controversy, I've dealt with it before and been trashed in an international magazine by editors with an agenda.  On the other, I don't often go after it unprovoked.  the gaming show that I do isn't designed for that, and I don't have an interest in going after politics, religion or social issues for the most part.

Yeah, I say that knowing I did a video talking about WOW and religion, but it's not a focal point.

Story- being a Nintendo game it not much in the sense of story. Its just a boy who is chasing his dream to become a pokemon master.

Graphics- It actually has very nice graphics for the Game Boy.

Music- Excellent music, my favorite being the music is the theme of Route 11.

Controls- Very basic, plain and simple.

Gameplay- It's a rock/paper/sizzors RPG. The battle system is not for everyone.

in Video Reviews

it's rare that I have a lot of emotional attachment while making a video.  The editing process is pretty mechanical, cut it down to the useful bits, make it cohesive, make it so you don't lose people on the way to the main message, all that.  Last night was an exception to the rule.  As I Was finishing the video, the importance hit me.

If you're not on the forums, Arthur Knowledge started the "Rainbow Reviewer" project over there.  The idea was to tie into the "It Gets Better" project.  That was started when several teens committed suicide for being bullied in school because they were Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and so on.  If you look over on the youtube page there's tons of videos from all walks  of life talking about how "it does get better", but a lot of them are adults who are successful in a field that most kids wont' get into.

I've been doing an MMO review show, mostly about WOW up to now.  So the show is talking about LGBT issues in MMO gaming.  And as I Was finishing it up, I put in a slate with a phone number so kids who need help now could call someone, talk to another human being and work things out.  And that's when it really hit me.

There are a LOT of kids who play WOW, XBLA, Runequest...  all the main MMO's.  If there's a kid who's going to be reaching out for help, they're probably going to find this video.  And it's very, very possible that I could be savign someone's life and not even know it.  I've been making online videos long enough to know that this isn't likely, and if it is I'll never know about it, but the possibility was enough to make me sit back and think a moment more about what I was doing.

It was enough to make me go back and re-re-relook at it, make sure of things.  Most of the vids in the project are reviews with an "it's ok to be gay" message tacked on.  That's not my thing.  I'm weird, if I'm making a video I'm doing it to make change.  I'm not expecting global peace, but if someone watches my video and becomes motivated to help mentor a young kid, volunteer time, or pick up a phone to talk to someone who CAN help them out, that's a victory in my book.

Nintendo: State of the video game industry

Practically anyone you meet will always mention Nintendo as a great influence in home gaming. When I was a kid, just buying the NES felt like a life changer. Being the first to play Super Mario Brothers gave me no doubt that this system was going to change things. Then came Super NES which made me drool. But then they topped themselves again with Nintendo 64. It really gave new aspects of gameplay. Nintendo then change once again with GameCube. It finally entered the gamedisk era. But then Nintendo totally redid how one played video games when it released its Wii system. So what is going on today?A recent article posted the lackluster sale of its Wii system and also the recently released 3DS and it's not a good sign for them. Though Nintendo is hopeful it will come back with its Wii U, it may be DOA. Why? Well for one there are rumors going around about xbox is going to release its next gen system next year and PS4 might be coming soon after. The price of Wii U is still not yet known but either a huge price will drive people away or they will save it for the next xbox/ps4 system. Either way I think Nintendo needs to redo again how one plays video games. Remember when the iPhone and iPod Touch first came out? They became a video game platform. Many people were able to buy that game app when it became available. It was more affordable and it generated money to those who made it. For me, Nintendo can really take advantage of that. Can you imagine Mario game app?. I think Nintendo said its passed on it but game companies have made themselves know in the game app world. We will see though what move Nintendo makes. Will they be happy if in fact Wii U succeeds or will they have to change their business outlook if it fails?

Blood and violence aren't needed for a good game but they do help make things way more interesting.

Postal 2 is a game about going insane or rather so very sane that you realize killing people is the perfect idea to save the world. Also note that none of this should be taken as advice, or in any way a good idea.

I hope to do more with this game later but for now this is all we get.

I have a serious question for Channel Awesome. In general anyone affiliated can answer, just out of curiosity actually.

What's up with Fraser?

 Fraser

I mean I love the guy, video Games Awesome and Awesome Video Games are great! But I mean he is never affiliated with anything, he never mentions Channel Awesome or Blistered Thumbs. He has never appeared or been mentioned on Transmission Awesome. Where did he come from what is his purpose on the site?
