One of the earliest memories I recall that I once had an action figure of Master Splinter…I took him to Preschool with me one day…I never saw him again after that. What ever happened to you, Master Splinter? Did a child take you? Were you tossed away by the janitor? Perhaps donated to Salvation Army? Or perhaps you ironically ended up in a sewer somewhere…I will never forget the mere hours of playtime we had together…I will always wonder and lament for whatever did happen to you after that fateful day…for that was the day I permanently got a splinter in my heart…(okay, that was bad) But I miss you, and wish our farewell hadn’t been so untimely…Adieu…Adieu…

The original post, with fancy pictures n' videos n' everything can be found here

I know some of you are going to argue with me over this. You might say the biggest mistake in film history was anyone handing Ed Wood some money, the invention of “Smell-O-Vision” or, at the time of writing, the handing of a TMNT reboot over to Michael Bay

You might say that those are the worst, but I disagree. Ed Wood, however terrible, can be incredibly entertaining. And although the others, in my opinion, have no redeeming qualities, they will make the movie studios a “fuckload” of money, which I believe is the technical term. No, the biggest mistake has nothing to do with the above. It does involve Robert Zemeckis though…

In 2011, Zemeckis’ film studio, ImageMovers Digital, released the movie Mars Needs Moms through Disney. As you probably remember (it was only last year), it was a complete and total failure, both commercially and critically, and is currently the biggest box office bomb in history, not adjusting for inflation. If you haven’t seen the movie, and I can’t really blame you for not doing so, you should know that the film used the motion-capture computer animation that was seen previously in films like The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol (the Jim Carrey one). While the animation looks very realistic, there’s just something off about it, looking kinda creepy. Mainly in the face.

No, the biggest mistake is not that Disney/Zemeckis approved it, although it always seemed like a stupid movie, who’s advertising (at the time) did absolutely nothing to help it. No, the mistake is this. At the time, Zemeckis was planning (and gotten approval) to do a 3D remake of Yellow Submarine, the animated movie from 1968 which starred the Beatles. Now as you may know, I am a “Beatles fanatic” and, when I heard about the remake, I appropriately wet my little panties in anticipation.

It was hoped the remake would be released in-time for the 2012 London Olympics, the cast already chosen. However, when Mars Needs Moms failed and Zemeckis’ friend at Disney, former Chairman Dick Cook, left, the project was scrapped, the reason given the lack of faith in the motion capture technology and it’s ability to make movies that will earn lots of moolah. All okay so far, I guess.

Although you can justify the rationale behind Disney cancelling the movie (and, subsequently Zemeckis being unable to sell it to anyone else), I still call bullshit. You could slap ‘The Beatles’ on anything and it would sell. A brief look on ebay.com yielded a few interesting pieces:
A (stained) Beatles table clothe, selling for $850
Yellow Submarine slippers, $50
Ringo Starr’s drumsticks. $80,000!
If you need something, any old piece of tat, look for it and you will find one with The Beatles stamped right on there

This is why it was, in my opinion, the biggest mistake in film history. Disney could’ve gotten me to animate it for free, used clips of the horrors of the Holocaust as advertising and cast 26 harmonious-farting chimpanzees as the voice actors and the movie would have made 100 times the budget instantly. You know why? Well, because The Beatles are kinda universal. Going back to the Michael Bay TMNT, that’ll make money because the Turtles were everywhere in the 80s (with the same tat-magnet ability as The Beatles) and, even though it’s probably gonna be terrible, curious people and people with nothing better to do will see it. People will see it just to see how bad it’ll be. And it will make a shit load of cash.

As I said, The Beatles were universal. Every country, every town, every house in the world that has music, everyone has at least heard of The Beatles. Except for maybe a small minority of the population of the world who didn’t know who Paul McCartney was when he performed at the last Grammys, but they’ve probably gone for a bath with their pet toaster by now.

So there’s the reason why it was stupid for the production side, but what about consumers? Well, the cast had already been decided, the highlights being comedian Peter Serafinowicz as Paul and (apparently) David Tennant as the Blue Meanie. If you haven’t seen The Peter Serafinowicz Show, he does a sketch called “Ringo Remembers” which is AMAZING. In one episode he played Paul as well as Ringo, and his impression is spot-on. Tennant, of course, was the 10th Doctor and was AWESOME (although I prefer Smith).

As I said earlier, Zemeckis has since tried to bring it to other companies, like Dreamworks, but nobody would touch it, and there hasn’t been any news on it in a long while. Which is incredibly depressing. However there is hope. It was announced in the last few days that the original Yellow Submarine will be re-released, digitally enhanced frame-by-frame, on May 28th on Blu-Ray and DVD. I already have the movie on DVD (1999 official release) so I’ll be buying it on Blu-Ray. Hopefully there’ll be a special edition with cool things, like the Help! special edition from a few years back. And that will earn billions upon billions of moneys. And then, hopefully, the biggest mistake in film history will be righted.

First Impressions: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012 TV Show)

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today's first impression will be of another remake based off a classic animated TV show from the 80's,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, it will not be done by me, but will be discussed by my friend/second co-founder of Old School Lane, Kevin. Aside from the interview I did with him about his upcoming movie, Collector, and the collaborative interview that we did with Caseen Gaines, author of Inside Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Untold, Unauthorized, and Unpredictable Story of a Pop Phenomenon, this will be his first post at Old School Lane. Please make him feel welcome and enjoy.

When I first heard that Peter Laird had sold the rights to theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise to Nickelodeon, I was very skeptical to say the least. Nickelodeon, once a proud network that released classic animated shows such as Rugrats, Doug, Aaahh!! Real Monsters, Hey Arnold, and so much more is now known for taking other creations such as Dragon Ball Z, Power Rangers, Voltron, and even the Winx Club and putting it under their banner. This just proves to me that Nickelodeon needs to rely on other creations to stay on TV just to survive. After all, Nickelodeon hasn't had a huge hit in a while. But like most people, I was judging a book by its cover. I wasn't patient enough to find out what Nickelodeon was going to do with the franchise and I came to find out that they were taking the franchise to a whole new level, which is a good thing. Similar to what Disney is doing with the Muppets and Marvel Comics, Nickelodeon is not keeping the Turtles at bay. They're giving the turtles a fresh clean slate that will please new and old fans of the show by having elements from the 1984 comic books, the 1987 and 2003 TV series, as well as a fresh new take. It will be a CGI series simply titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The show, from what I've seen and heard would be similar to the 2003 series in which the voice actors from the series will be new. Jason Biggs will be voicing Leonardo, Greg Cipes will be voicing Michelangelo, Rob Paulsen, surprisingly, will be voicing Donatello, when he voiced Raphael in the 1987 cartoon. Sean Astin will be the new voice for Raphael. Hoon Lee will be voicing Splinter, Mae Whitman will voice April O' Neil, and lastly, Kevin Michael Richardson will be voicing Shredder.

in Top # Lists

Well after doing two lists of favorites I had to one for least favorites.  Yes there are two comics to fill out but they are so bad.  Why 12?  Why not it's christmas!
12. Santa With Muscles.  Oh Hulk Hogan.  How was this movie a good idea?  Hulkester playing a rich guy who loses memory and thinks he santa.  This was stupid and not even in a funny way.
11. Power Rangers Zeo Christmas Episode.  Ever wonder why there hasn't been a Power Rangers' christmas special for a long time till this year?  Well maybe have to do with this really badly done episode.  Were rangers start get controlled and argue over holidays.  It really just breaks down into how bad Zeo season was at times.  I didn't like a lot of season rangers for this season and this episode didn't help.
10. New Kids On The Block The Animated Series Christmas Special.  Ever see linkara's review for the Christmas comic?  Yeah they had a christmas special for there short lived cartoon and let just say it was worse then the comic.
9. Grandma's House We Go.  Oh Olsen Twins.  This was part of series of made for video movies.  It hasn't aged well for me as the story looking back is bad as Twins try to sneak there way to there grandma.  Simple plot the way they go about it sort dumb and really paint by numbers movie.
8. Home Alone 4.  I will say this better 3 but I am not totally sure I count 3 as christmas movie.  This horrible.  Stick in plot of bringing parents back together with rehash stuff from first Home Alone Movie.  It really doesn't work.
7. Power Rangers: Alpha's Magical Christmas.  Another christmas special made to try to cash in on hot property but at least Power Rangers was hot at the time unlike #6.  Just alpha and kids singing carols in commander center.
6. We Wish You A Turtle Christmas.  Why does this exist?  Why?  I mean terrible songs, terrible costumes, strange time skips.  This was a weird way to use the turtles.
5. Santa the Barbarian.  This Maximum Press comic book is two 8 page stories and they both really suck.  First one features Santa going all barbarian due to naughty list big about million times longer then nice list.  So he goes and starts killing people.  No not kids but grown ups we don't know what they did but at the end of the story it features a pile of bodies including Hitler.  The time when this is suppose to take place?  No idea.  Second story features elves on strike and drunken santa fight a robot with horrible artwork.
4. Dexter's Lab Christmas episode.  There was a short episode where Dexter decides to prove santa is fake.  How you might ask?  Capture him and shave off the beard to prove it was dad.  As you might believe it didn't go to well.
3. Johnny Bravo Christmas.  Really dumb.  I hated this show and Christmas special was just as bad.
2. Santa's Slay.   Pretty sad when the best actors movie are killed off in 5 minutes.  James Caan is not even created for the movie.  I don't blame him.  I mean a Santa going evil isn't bad idea with a good story and play off how close the name isn't bad either.  This is really insane.  Bill Goldberg play Santa.  I liked Bill as a movie but he is wrong for this movie.
1. Warrior Christmas Speical.  Yeah I am cheating with it as not tv but there isn't anything as bad tv or comic wise then this piece of garbage.  Barley a comic but as linkara and spoony mention it's impled that Warrior rapes santa!  WTF?  You know if I talk to Warrior in person I like to ask him about this and rest of the series.
