The Big 4: Live from the movie theatres (Retrospective)
In an attempt to prove that im not a snobbish exclusive viewer of british things only, and in a piss poor attempt to disguise the fact that I couldnt think of anything better to write about, i'll review my experience watching The Big 4 Live at the cinema.
For those who dont know, The Big 4 shows brought together for the first time the four bands who perfected the american thrash metal genre, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer & Anthrax. Their first engagement together was a short tour in eastern europe under the Sonisphere Festival banner, a travelling metal festival dreamed up by Metallica and their promoters back in 2009.
So that western european and american audiences didnt miss out on what was history in the making for metalheads, the show from Sofia, Bulgeria would be recorded and shown as live in cinema's across the western hemisphere. Up until a few weeks before the event, it looked as if Liverpool was going to miss out as the nearest cinema selected was in Ellsemere Port, on the other side of the river mersey and nearly 50 minutes drive away. Finally with a week to go before the event, FACT Liverpool announced it had secured the rights to show the event. So I was straight down there to secure a ticket.
Going into the show I was already a big fan of Metallica and Megadeth. I liked one or two Slayer songs and had only really ever listened to one Anthrax song (Caught in a Mosh). I also wasnt really expecting a rowdy crowd. The city responsible for The Beatles and Atomic Kitten isnt exactly a place with a booming metal scene after all. The event was however filled with surprises from the get go.
Firstly, it was my first visit to FACT. FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is a centre combining a local film and art exhibition centre and a cinema. The Big 4 show was being shown in one of the smaller auditoriums but it was still a decent size. The big shocker came that I arrived 20 minutes before the advertised start time and the place was near packed already and everyone had a shirt on featuring one of the 4 bands (the majority were Metallica shirts).
