Spoilers ahead.

Starting a new little project on this blog and going to try and watch every film released in 2011 (at least as listed on Wikipedia) and as luck would have it, I must begin with a Nicolas Cage film. Now normally I like to do a video review of Cage’s films but I’m having some technical issues in that department so I have to resort to something barbaric like typing out the words with my fingers rather than speaking them with my mouth parts. Enough of my problems, on to the review!

The film opens during the crusades which were apparently fought by quipping Americans who may or may not be trying to do English-esque accents. I honestly can’t tell if Nicolas Cage is trying speak with an English accent and just failing or if it’s just the way his voice goes when he’s trying to speak in somewhat faux Olde English. Ron Perlman, on the other hand, doesn’t even seem to bother and honestly, his performance is more enjoyable because of it. Anyway, the two Crusadery chums are hacking their way through battles, killing for God and drinking with wenches and just generally having as good a time as two knights can. After a while though, they come to the realisation that they aren’t just killing deserving infidel warriors but also women and children too. They decide that enough is enough and leave the Crusades and go on the run as deserters.

So they find themselves wandering around medieval Europe. What are they doing? Well, that’s never really explained. Probably going from village to village and righting wrongs where they can. That’s the ind of shit that righteous outlaws are always doing from Robin Hood to The A-Team. Anyway, they come across a kingdom blighted by the plague where they are recognised and arrested. However they are given a holy quest by a plague-ridden Christopher Lee (in one of the more bizarre cameo appearances in film history). The quest is to deliver an alleged witch to a monastery where a rite will be performed that will remove the curse of the plague. Cage is reticent to sign up and work for the church again but ultimately relents in exchange for a guarantee that the accused witch will receive a fair trial and that he and Perlman are given full pardons.

They are accompanied on their quest by a priest, the unfortunately named Debelzaq, a swindler/merchant named Hagamar, another knight whose own land has been ravaged by the plague, causing him to lose his daughter, named Ulrich and a young aspiring knight Kay. They set off and, honestly, not much actually happens on the way. There’s a few deaths and few things which are possibly meant to make you wonder if the girl actually has supernatural powers or not whilst actually makes it pretty fucking obvious that she has supernatural powers. What happens could best be described as dude gets stabbed, there’s a rickety bridge on which no one dies, some demon wolves and then bam. They’re at the monastery.

Prelude to the 21 Jump Street Movie Review: A rant and explanation

Here's my review in a nutshell:  THIS MOVIE SUCKED!

And you know what scares the shit out of me?  I'M IN THE MINORITY ON THIS!

I guess in order to understand why I think this movie sucked, you need to understand what frame of mind I'm in.  So before I go into this review in detail, let me explain where I'm coming from.

I've been out of work for the better part of two years.  I've only been gainfully employed for the past month.  I have had no disposable income until this weekend.  So I obviously haven't been to the movies in awhile.  Also, I don't watch television (well, not on a TV, anyway), and I don't voluntarily watch movie trailers.  I just don't.  There are better things to waste my time with than commercials.

So if there was a hype machine for 21 Jump Street, I MISSED ALL OF IT.  All I knew about the movie was that 1) It was based on a TV show I happen to like, and 2) Johnny Depp would be reprising his role from said TV show.  And you know what?  That was enough to sell me.

Gokaiger has finally come to a close, and what a year it’s been has finally come to a close, and what a year it’for Sentai! While it’s not hard to see that the show has been nothing short of nostalgic bliss as well as all round entertaining but what the finale as good as what the lead up to it had been promising or was it not able to match its quite wonderful legacy that precedes it?

Is it me or does this reminds you of another certain anime series? Or is it a coincidence?

Xam'd: Lost Memories, released in Japan as Bounen no Zamned (亡念のザムド, Bōnen no Zamudo?, lit. Zamned of the Lost Memory) was released exclusively first in the US (completely in the original Japanese dub) on the Playstation 3, when it launched its PSN video service during E3 2008. It was the most downloaded video during that first launch, although after that, I haven’t heard any original scripted content from the PS Network ever since. So let’s dive right on in.

Knight of Five Reviews 34

Hello and welcome to the review, what is there to say about the game of the year of 2006? One simple thing, simply awesome and amazing, game play, graphics, storyline, everything about it was high quality and done well. What game is this, well of course it is Gears of War, a military third person shooter based on a fictitious world fighting, what else, an alien race. So let us dig into the 5th best selling Xbox game to date.

Though it was high selling I did not have an Xbox360 when it came out so I never got to play this game when it came out, and when I finally did get my own 360 the gears hype had died out since gears 2 was already released and had faded from public eye. At that time Assassin’s creed had taken the limelight, but when a friend of mine had heard that I had not played it, he quickly got out the game and we played through it.

Good day, people of the Internet. Yes, I still capitalise it, because I have drifted in from the Thirties when this sort of thing was still done. Not literally, obviously, at least not with the Internet, but... oh, you get my point. My name's Colour Coded Chaos, and I'm going to be writing reviews about things that I watch, listen to, and steal over the course of my time here. I will attempt to amuse you and likely fail miserably, but my therapist said it was a good idea. Some would question the use of a therapist who happens to be an old sock with three googly eyes stuck to it, but they're just being racist. Nothing wrong with being a sock.

So, I suppose I should get the ball rolling with some brief, bite-sized reviews of things. What have I watched recently? Well:-

Habemus Papam! (Cinemas) -- Habemus Papam is a satire of the Catholic Church's means of electing a Head Paedo Pope, and it's one of the cleverest there is. Oooh, that sounds like damning with faint praise. Trust me, it only got a limited release in the US but it is worth checking out, especially if you're no huge fan of organised religion in general. Perhaps that made me more amenable to it, and it does feel like it could've used a little tightening up in the ol' editing department, but it had me laughing almost throughout. Highly recommended.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part 1 (Cinemas) -- I know that the Bum did a review of it. I like the Bum's review of it. This does not dissuade me in the slightest, though some people in the comments will probably say it should have. Listen, guys, nobody here likes Twilight films. None of the actors involved in it like them, the audience that got the films made (the third one by David Slade, one of my favourite directors and therefore now the one I feel most guilty about liking) is dwindling into insignificance as they dredge their Team Insert One-Note Bellend Here shirt-clad bodies out of the mire of middle school and towards some semblance of adulthood, the critics by and large hate them for being shot like perfume ads and having a special effects budget that consisted of three ham sandwiches and the contents of the back of the grip's sofa... we should, as a culture, leave them to die horribly. In over eight hours of film, I found maybe ten minutes of OK footage. You people are doing it wrong. Avoid like the venereal disease it resembles.

And I've been listening to:-

Hello all! I am The Original. I have been a long time fan of film, TV, games, etc. I love all internet reviewers, and a member of TGWTG's website for a long while now(probably going on a fan for about 4 1/2 years). Anyways, I digress. I recently finally acquired the want and time necessary to start what I truly have been wanting to do, which is to review and just be a part of the "scene" that's been rising(at least since I've been seeing on the site). All I want is to be able to come on here, write some thoughts, articles, etc. Hopefully I will be allowed because this is a general passion of mine. With due time I hope to start doing videos(which I would make versions for some of sed articles of mine) and have my own show, which would be a dream come true. Oh and in case any of you might comment, NO! I do not call myself The Original based on any sort of ego trip or sort of "claim to fame" I'm trying to gain, it was just a nicknamed that spawned onto me....THAT IS ALL! Haha. Anyways, I hope to start writing on the site, and I hope you all can take the time to just let me express my opinion as I will let you express any of yours.

in Film Review

Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart), Howard (Walter Huston) and Curtin (Tim Holt) are three down-and-out men looking for a profit when they decide to go looking for gold. The three of them set out into the mountains of Mexico to find their fortunes, but along the way they have to deal with bandits, tag-alongs, wild beasts and worst of all: Their own greed.

I don't believe I've actually seen a whole lot of Humphrey Bogart films in my time but this is certainly a change of pace from something like Casablanca. Dobbs is a corrupt, weak, devious man who is most easily tempted by the harsh wilderness and high stakes at hand while panning for gold. He gives a performance that I would call "outstanding" if he wasn't up against two actors who I'd give the same label to. Huston sadly passed only a short while after making this film, but it was a great mark to be made so late in his life. And Holt is great as the much more level headed of the two younger miners. I thought it was great watching Dobbs and Curtin go at each other, with Dobbs constantly worrying about his share of the loot and Curtin being more sensible and trusting of the others. Meanwhile Howard is just an old man out for some fun, not caring if he gets even an ounce of gold in the end.

It's interesting getting into the minds of three very different people and how they handle their situation. At first I was wondering if it would just end up with all three of the characters fighting over their shares, with a message about how greed is bad. But the message is more about how greed can take ahold of somebody and push them to limits that others would never dare to go. Dodd starts to really break down as the story goes along, and it's nice to see Curtin along with him contrasting this rather than giving in to it himself. Add to this some rather intense moments with the bandits and some decent gunplay and you have a pretty solid flick.

The Treasure of the Sierre Madre is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. It's a must for just about anyone, although I can't imagine any woman I know sitting through it. It's worth a watch if only for Bogart's performance, or to finally hear how that "We don't need no stinking badges" line actually plays out in the movie. The payoff for that line is so much better than I was expecting.

Knight of Five Reviews 33

Well here we are, after a long wait and a few demands, we have finally arrived at the review that I have promised for such a long time; all the way back to review number 3, Startropics for the NES. What a journey it has been trying to get this review done. So how about we just get down to the nit and gritty, Hello and welcome to the review, and let us dig into Startropics.

My sister handed me the NES cartridge about a year or two ago and asked me to review it, back then I really did not give it the fair chance that it really deserved and kind of blew it off. That is until here after the last review I buckled down and played it, and to my surprise it is the type of game that I enjoy, from the very first dungeon it is out to get you. This game was produced in 1990 by the Coca-cola company, actually it was produced by Nintendo, and the same development team that made the Punch out game series; but they must have really enjoyed cola soda do to the fact that this game has the annoying trait of naming places and things words that ended in cola, Shecola Castle, Americola, Chief Coralcola, etc.

Sploich Predicts the 84th Academy Award Winners

in Movies

Hey there, Sploich here with my final Oscar predictions for the 84th Academy Awards. I got a 56% accuracy rating on my nomination predictions so I'm hoping to get even better with my winner predictions. The thing is, this year is a bit tricky. My head and my heart are telling me several different things based on the other award ceremonies this year (not including the Golden Globes because, as I've stated before, they mean nothing) as well as the way the Academy typically votes. I'm just going to tell you now that my predictions might be a little controversial. But what do I care? They're my predictions. If I'm wrong then I'm the only one to blame. BUT ENOUGH RAMBLING! ON WITH THE PREDICTIONS!

BEST SCORE
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

How can the silent film NOT win Best Score? There were some really great scores this year but when it comes to memorable...War Horse wins. But if memorable scores were the ones that won this award then the score from the first Pirates of the Caribbean would have been nominated. Like it should have been. But yeah, The Artist, hands down.

BEST SONG
What I Think Will Win: "Man or Muppet" from The Muppets
What I Want To Win: "Real in Rio" from Rio

This category is very strange this year. I literally have a 50/50 chance of getting it right (hey, there's a movie that got snubbed at the Oscars this year: 50/50). I figure they'll go with the Muppet's song because, well, it's the Muppets. That and it's written by that guy from that show on HBO or Showtime or whatever that I've never watched. I'd love to see "Real in Rio" win but I'm pretty confident the Muppets will take it, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

BEST SOUND
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: Hugo*

BEST SOUND EDITING
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: Hugo*

Hugo may not have struck me the way it struck other critics, but you'd find it difficult to find a soul who doesn't praise the film for its technicals. It even got some of the most cynical, dismissive critics to admit that the 3D was great (though admittedly, I didn't see it in 3D myself, yet). Both of these could go to War Horse, or maybe even The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I'm siding with the most marketable answer and saying Hugo takes both.

BEST FILM EDITING
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

Film Editing is always an interesting category. Well, not on the surface for most people I guess, but it's one that I personally am always interested in. It really could be any of the five nominees, but I'm saying The Descendants because it just seems like more the type of film the Academy would pick. You can have your fancy gimmicks like with Hugo and The Artist, and they work great for those movies, but I like to think the thing the film editors look for is subtlety, and The Descendants is graceful, to say the least.

BEST MAKEUP
What I Think Will Win: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
What I Want To Win: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2*

Did you ever realize that not a single Harry Potter film has ever won an Oscar? This is the last chance for them to give one to The Boy Who Lived and this is the perfect category to do it in. It's up against two movies that were not only not very strong with critics but movies that didn't do a whole lot with their makeup. HP, on the other hand, was tasked with creating a battlefield of sorcery, and the makeup works wonders for that goal.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

This one is really tough this time around because all five nominees have an equal shot at the Title. I might be taking a bit of a risk with this one because usually this category goes to a lesser known film like Jane Eyre or W.E. I can't imagine they would give a Roland Emmerich film an Oscar these days but they have done it before. And then there's Hugo, which could take it I guess. I dunno, I'm sticking with The Artist, for no reason other than that I just can't choose between the five.

BEST ART DIRECTION
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

Once again, the silent film is sort of the obvious winner just on the basis of it being a silent film. The art direction is what makes The Artist such a lovable film, and the Academy is more than likely going to award it for this.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
What I Think Will Win: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
What I Want To Win: Real Steel*

Alright, I'm being pretty bias here. You have no idea how excited I was to see Real Steel nominated in this category. I loved the hell out of that movie and totally didn't expect it to get such a lousy welcome. I know Rise is easily the most technologically advanced film in the group, with some of the most astonishing CG I have ever seen in a movie, but for my personal pick I've just got to go with the one I didn't expect to show up. Now if only my favorite movie of the year, Captain America: The First Avenger, had been nominated for anything...

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: The Artist

I really don't know about this one. War Horse has some beautiful cinematography, but Terrence Malick is one of those guys who could easily steal this one away. I think Hugo wins if only for that opening shot and the allegedly (again haven't seen the effect) masterful 3D work. I'd definitely like to see The Artist take it though, considering, again, that cinematography is sort of one of the major benefactors to a silent film.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

Easily the front-runner due to its sheerly masterful pacing, humor and grace. I'm sad to see The Ides of March only got nominated in this one category, but if it belongs anywhere at the Oscars this is where it belongs. Seeing as it is the only nomination for the movie, however, it probably doesn't have a chance. I'm honestly not even sure how Hugo got in here, but that could be my own feelings on the film poking through. Meanwhile I really did not like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but I totally understand what it's doing in this category. I just disagree. But none of that really matters because this is going to be a very easy win for The Descendants.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
What I Think Will Win: Midnight in Paris
What I Want To Win: Midnight in Paris*

I wonder if Woody Allen is going to show up this year. Anyway, this is probably the category with the most surprises, with only two of the nominees having even been on my radar for the category. It's nice to see A Separation on here as I've heard very good things about it and I'm looking forward to seeing it. But Margin Call? Really? I've heard nothing but BAD things about that movie. And then there's Bridesmaids. Ugh. If you're one of the handful of people who have been following my reviews then you know I do not like Bridesmaids. Nay, I loathe and despise it and refuse to even call it a film. Why people think this is funny, why they would think it's good writing, I will never know. Anyway, Midnight in Paris wins this one easy. I need to get off of this category before I burst a blood vessel.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
What I Think Will Win: Octavia Spencer for The Help
What I Want To Win: Bérénice Bejo for The Artist*

And I get right into another category featuring Bridesmaids. Joy. Actually I'm not at all upset with Melissa McCarthy being nominated. Well, okay a little bit, but I do really like her even if I couldn't stand her character in that movie. She's one of those actresses who should have gotten a bigger name for herself a long time ago but just didn't have the chance until now. This one is a hard race between Chastain, Bejo and Spencer, but I'm going with Octavia mainly because of her Globe win. I know that goes against everything I say about the Globes but honestly I just don't know what to think of the acting categories this year.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
What I Think Will Win: Christopher Plummer for Beginners
What I Want To Win: Nick Nolte for Warrior*

All I've been hearing for months is how easily Christopher Plummer is going to win this award, so I figure that's probably the best person to go with. I'm sure I'll regret it if Branagh takes it, but then I'll shrug it off since Branagh totally deserves it. I don't have a review up for Warrior for technical reasons (I will eventually) but Nick Nolte gave the performance of a lifetime in that movie and I'd love to see him win. But really? Jonah Hill? I mean, he was good, but Oscar-worthy? I don't know...

BEST ACTRESS
What I Think Will Win: Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn
What I Want To Win: Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn*

I have to admit that this is a somewhat bias opinion. I feel like I'm the only person who really just didn't see a lot of acting from Viola Davis in The Help. Don't get me wrong, she's a great actress who deserves plenty of Oscars, but for that movie specifically I just do not see it. She's barely in the movie enough to even call her a lead actress and when she is on screen she's just looking kind of mopey. Michelle Williams on the other hand was considered a casting catastrophe, but what she did with the role was magnificent. She embodied Marilyn Monroe in a way that is so unique and graceful that I really want to believe the Academy won't overlook her the way they did Frank Langella when he did the same in Frost/Nixon.

BEST ACTOR
What I Think Will Win: George Clooney for The Descendants
What I Want To Win: Jean Dujardin for The Artist*

Clooney really gave two of his best performances in 2011: One in front of the camera in The Descendants and one behind the camera making The Ides of March. And since this is the only one that he got nominated for, this is the one he's going to win for. Honestly, it could be any of the five nominees, but The Descendants is just the right movie in just the right year to win Clooney the Oscar for a second time. As for my pick though? It's tough but for now I'm going with Dujardin because I just really loved him in The Artist.

BEST DIRECTION
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

I really truly honestly and thoroughly can't stand that they would nominate Terrence Malick, one of the most pretentious, laziest, hacky-est directors working today, who isn't Lars von Trier or freaking Baz Luhrmann, for Best Director. But I digress. This year it's being considered a race between The Artist and The Descendants for the big awards, and I just think The Descendants is more the kind of film the Academy chooses. That's not to say either of them is better than the other. In fact, I gave both of them a 9/10 on my site. But The Descendants is a much more down-to-earth, less gimmicky film. Gimmick has never won a movie the big ones, and that's why The Descendants is the only movie in this category that makes sense for the win. But hey, what do I know? They might want to give it to Scorsese again, even though he only won six years ago.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
What I Think Will Win: Rango
What I Want To Win: Rango

Puss in Boots really got 5% of the vote? Really? Anyway, Rango gets it unless one of the lesser known films, A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita, make some sort of surprise win. They don't look like they will though, so I'm saying Rango takes it. And why shouldn't it? It's a beautifully artistic, hysterical western that treats kids like adults and allows adults to be kids again. And really, what more do you need than that?

BEST PICTURE
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: Midnight in Paris

And thus we come to the grand finale, with my most controversial pick of all. As I stated before, I just don't see The Artist getting the win. Send-ups like that don't win. It's actually kind of funny that we have a silent film, making homage to the history of film, Hugo, making homage to the history of filmmaking and War Horse, which feels like it should have come out in the '90s, both nominated for Best Picture alongside Midnight in Paris which is about how much B.S. nostalgia is. The Descendants is the strongest film in the running that seems like something the Academy would give the big award to, and it deserves it. Really, about half of the movies on the list deserve it in my mind. If you see my reviews on my site, I gave the other half a meh-to-awful rating, and the only two I absolutely loved were Midnight in Paris and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The reason I choose Midnight in Paris as my personal hopeful is because it's a highly enjoyable film with a powerful message that everyone needs to receive, especially today. It's my second-favorite movie of 2011 and I'm just glad to see it nominated. But as for winning, it's between The Artist and The Descendants and I think The Descendants is just stronger among Academy voters.

Welp, that's all there is. I may make a post-Awards blog to express my feelings on the results and tell you how completely wrong my guesses probably were. Or maybe I'll be back to gloat. Oh how I wait for the day on which I can actually gloat about getting these predictions right. Curse me and my taking chances with my predictions. Oh well, it's fun all the same. If you'd like to see a full list of the nominees as well as a few predictions I didn't state on here, go to my site at Spoich.com. And while you're there, you can check out my reviews, watch me eat a cupcake (you'll understand when you see it) and follow me on Twitter @Sploich and @SploichCom and Facebook!

Now a lot of people aren't going to be familiar with this film choice. The Tokusatsu series Kamen Rider W (Double) had been a great success after the rather horrid Rider season that preceded it. It did so well in fact that the titular character appeared in a number of Rider films in cross over, as well as having their own films. However Toei decided to have two direct to DVD, or V Cinemas about the secondary Rider of the series Kamen Rider Accel and the villain of the movie Kamen Rider Eternal, but today's subject is just the first one:

So imagine this, its 2007 and you see a trailer for what had the potential to be one of the greatest martial arts films of the decade, potentially all time. It, for the first film, had Jackie Chan and Jet Li starring together in a big fantasy action epic. Well I never saw a trailer for it again; somehow it went straight through the cinemas in the blink of an eye lid… and I was more than a little annoyed. Still I eventually got the DVD; saw the film and it became one of the greatest martial arts films I’d ever seen, but with the benefit of experience how does it hold up? Let’s have a look:

Following on from my review of the first episode of Power Rangers RPM’s first episode review; seemed fitting to cover what at this point may well be the last appearance of the RPM rangers. Now before I start I have more than a few issues with this ‘film’, however my issues are personal but the issues are justifiable, even to me but I’ll get to those later.

Clash of the Red Rangers is a team up TV movie between the RPM Red Ranger (Ranger Operator Series Red in the shows terminology) and Power Rangers Samurai, only Series Red RPM ranger and the RPM ultrazord appear aside from some of Vendrix’s army, however aside from grinders the villain is a new character. The movie is a mash up of 2 Super Sentai movies; the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger movie, Shinkenger vs. Go-Onger and new American footage.

Today I'm looking at Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, the 3 game in a currently abandoned series by CAPCOM. Onimusha is a great series that just unfortunately never made the sales to keep new games coming out. While not an RPG either, the earlier titles having more in common with Resident Evil games, they do incorporate more RPG elements as the series goes on enough to warrant reviewing as well as the poor sales leading to an under appreciated series that needs more attention.

The first game was a release title for the PS2 and sold very well, enough to guarantee a sequel and told the tale of Samanosuki Akechi (modelled after real life actor Takashi Kaneshiro and is the fictional brother of the real life Mitsuhide Akechi) as Nobunaga was revived after making a pact with demons. He's granted a magical gauntlet that allows him to fight the demons and become an Onimusha to fight them. So people are rescued and the lord of demons is destroyed, so moving on

The second Onimusha introduced a whole host of new characters, new protagonist Jubei Yagyu, (modelled after the late Yusaka Matsuda) takes up arms against Nobunaga who escaped Samanosuki in the first game when his village is destroyed by demons. Yagyu is half-Oni as his mother was an Oni so he has access to the same abilities as Samanosuki without the need of a magic Gauntlet. Eventually after working with a group other other playable characters Nobunaga is defeated and all is well.

I was a big Power Rangers fan in the 90s, millions of kids were and I was at the younger age of Bandai’s (PR owners for first 10 years) target audience. I drifted off after a few years with a few occasions bringing me back to watch specials, the killing of Zordon, the 10 Red Ranger team up anniversary episode, Tommy’s return for the 12th season, you the idea but Power Rangers RPM (17th series) was first and to date only series I’ve ever found myself watching every week for the duration of the series run.

As a change to my general formula for this review I’m going to try and explain why RPM was so revolutionary to Power Rangers (all my opinion but I believe a lot of my views are shared) as I narrate the events of the first episode and discuss a broader area of information relating to the future of the series, PR in general and Super Sentai (The Japanese series PR uses footage from, I’ll assume you’re familiar with the general ideas of what’s borrowed from the Japanese counterparts.)

Don't know what half those things are? Don't worry, we won't hold that against you. The show is designed with both a casual observer and a serious fan in mind.

In this preliminary "episode zero," we take a brief look at the big three tokusatsu (special effects) series: Power Rangers Samurai, Pirate Sentai Gokaiger, and Kamen Rider Fourze. Future episodes will focus on more specific topics with in-depth analysis.

A/N: "Moe-tality" is a combined term of obvious origins I came up in order to define a certain kind of Japanimated extravaganzas featuring a classic "Moe" scenario (the inexplicable fascination towards archetypical elements of cuteness derived from specific personality traits and/or aesthetical presentations applied to anime logic) that actually manage to be good and enjoyable for an audience outside of their typical fans. Reviews marked under the "Moe-tality" sign are dedicated to the positive analysis of said, possibly underrated series.

If you happen to be a hardcore, niche-oriented gamer with a particular taste over unique Japan-imported interactive extravaganzas, chances are you might be familiar with the name of Yui Haga. If you're not familiar with the name itself, you're bound to at least be aware of its most renouned visual products - specifically, the outstanding artwork for the acclaimed Tactical-RPG meta-series known as "Disgaea." Which also makes him responsible for giving actual shape to everyone's favourite demon penguin slave, the Prinny.

If you are wondering what kind of projects does Haga-san busy himself with when he's not drawing pictures of flat-chested half-naked succubi... well, he's actually drawing and writing stories about flat-chested half-naked succubi. Yui Haga, as an independent artist (and I use the term loosely), is quite renowned for his huge lolicon fanbase. In other words, his stories are made for an audience of paedophiles - I am not even kidding here. The person that provided a unique aesthetical dimension to the self-aware, self-bashing satyrical bonanza that defined part of the appeal of the "Disgaea" franchise, when left alone and without direction, actually conceived and published a serialized manga about a 10 years old girl discovering her "love" for a young male adult. Thus, something like "Lotte no Omocha!" (literally translated as "Lotte's Toy!") was allowed to exist in this world.

WARNING: Not entirely SFW.

Animation is for kids. It's as simple as that.

Of course, some of us know better. For one, some of the earliest animations out there were theatrical shorts, preceding movies for all audiences--and since these audiences weren't composed entirely of a bunch of ten-year-olds, but also not certainly entirely of grissled barflies, they HAD to appeal to everyone they possibly could.

But then, in about the 60s or 70s, cartoons went to television, and their target market slimmed like a praying mantis with anorexia. Cartoons were for kids, money was for Hanna Barbera, and depression was for adults.

NOTICE:

I am the Hatena Critic, I criticize/review Flipnotes from the website Flipnote Hatena. For those who don't know, Flipnote Hatena is this Youtube-like video sharing website so that people could share their Flipbook-like animations called "Flipnotes" online. These Flipnotes are created, written, painted, animated, spit and colored with the free DSiWare application, Flipnote Studio, for the Nintendo DSi. I am well-known on the website for being one of the first to share constructive criticism to Popular Flipnotes there. I got hate, I got love, I got everything an opinion-giving enthusiast can get when giving a free speech. So, not very long ago, I wrote one of my longest reviews, inspired by the Nostalgia Critic's humorous style. I got very positive feedback regarding my review. So much, it turned out to be my most famous review of all time. So, its matter of time that I start using TGWTG's blog community so that I could share it with more people. Without further due, here is my review. Thank You.

“Hello, I’m the Hatena Critic! I review/criticize Flipnotes from the website Flipnote Hatena and welcome to another post of Flipnote Hatena ‘Read N’ Laugh’ Reviews. You remember my last one, right? The most longest review I ever made? Well, I decided to make another one, and this one uses one of the worst attempts of Flipbook making, ripping off edit me’s and its such a laugh and joy to read these types of Flipbooks. It’s so bad, you find yourself having everlasting laughing and humorous orgasms from how bad this shit it is. So, recently, there’s a new one who, apparently, was on the most Popular. I guess people thought this was good as “Escaping Star” or “Gravity”, but whatever. It’s called, “It Just Happens” by ß•や2 (id:MissyLovesYou). And what can you predict with this title? THAT’S RIGHT! Teenage pregnancy! That’s right, folks! We are going to enjoy crappy-made nude people having sex in this comic… Maybe not, and you’re boner just disappeared from that statement. So, sit back, relax, enjoy this review, while reading the comic on your DSi/DSiXL system. This is

So, we start off with the title. No, you’re fantasies about shitty-drew teenagers making love is not going to happen, so zip your pants up! Turn next page, and we see the credits!… At the beginning at the book… weird. So, it just says that the creator just gives credit for the “bodiees” by creator named Bubbles, Yeeaah no clue either. Hell, even she celebrates herself that she gave credit. That is so wrong. I mean, I made a comic and I made every fucking frame in it and did I ever said “HOLY CRAP I MADE EVERY SINGLE DRAWING! THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!”? NO! So, whatever the hell your name is, MAKE YOUR OWN SHITTY DRAWINGS! Turn next page, and we have the character introductions. Did ever wondered what kind of shit is that below the word “Characters”? It’s her uncreativity made into life. So our first character is Melody, who is 16, sweet, Lelani’s BFF and has a disfigured head. Then it’s Lelani, who is 16 as well, nice, Melody’s BFF and has a disfigured smile on her cheeks. Then it’s Jenni, who is 17, mean/…. nice? … What’s with this stupid irony? She’s also snotty and hates Melody and, like every snotty little bitch, she has her left side of her bra to be noticeable, OOOOH… STEREOTYPES! Then we turn to Sean, who is 16 and… “niceeeeeee” *clicks tongue* Did even read his T-shirt? What does it says? “Aero NYC”?… I guess they live in a time where New York was in the clouds… Just like the creator when she was shitting this in the sink. Then we turn to Sky, who is 17 and nice but not “niceeeeeeeeeeee” nice, he’s just nice.
Creator: “HOPE YOU LYKE IT!”
You bet your ass I won’t. *chuckles* Did you even noticed that on every single character description says the word “nice”? I guess Aero New York City is the exact opposite of how people are in actual New York. So now we get into our story, where Melody, with her amazingly expressed face, screams: “SUMMER BREAK!”
Oh pudding…
Melody: “How lovely” (with her amazing expressions) “Except I moved! IDK no one how am I supposed to enjoy summer break! (with no question marks)
So she walks around like every other person who has a life and she hears foot steps running and then (just like that) BAMM! (with the most cheapest action balloon ever made) She kissed Sean!… Out of the blue… Can someone explain? I mean, this only happens on cartoons. In real life, you don’t accidentally smooth someone’s lips off just collide with her/him, you (according to the laws of physics) you fall off to the ground along with him/her. And if it’s you on the ground and her against you’re body, be sure to act smooth and take your boob-feeling moment with respect to her.
Sean: Oh God I’m so so- (*Ahem* Manwhorish?)
Melody: It’s fine. (Since when people blush their faces in blue?) So why did you bump into me? or so called bumb?
Uhh lemme guess, he was running and, perhaps, he didn’t saw you. But, since the creator said FUCK YOU to physics, it’s better to end it up with a kiss, because kisses turn people on (No wonder Twilight was a box office hit)

Sean: Me and my friend run everyday at this park. (Yeah, cause that’s what normal teenagers do these days in a park)

Melody: Figures… [I wonder if he has a six pack]

(Note: This post was previously published in my personal review blog. As I've been unable to work on a video in a little while, I'm posting this instead.)

WARNING: CONTAINS OPINIONS! (also spoilers)

Not too long ago, I wrote a post discussing a few things I found irritating about many review series. One of those things was the mindless praise that some series end up getting. I mentioned how it hurt the review process by both reducing the amount of valuable information the viewer gets and bundling all viewers into a single group, which hurts no matter how you feel about the work. But there’s another thing that bothers me about this kind of praise, and that’s the effect it can have on anyone who doesn’t feel the same way.

Have you ever had a series that everyone around you enjoyed except for you? The reason you don’t like it could be anything, but it’s something that can’t easily be changed. It can make you feel annoyed or possibly disturbed when everyone else praises it for reasons that have nothing to do with you. I’ve seen it happen before, particularly when one review disagrees with the others and gets shunned for it.

With that in mind, I thought I should tell you something about myself. It’s going to illustrate my point, but more importantly, it’s going to help me say some things I should have said long, long ago. I’ll start off by giving you the short version:

I hate Madoka Magica.

There may be some people out there who find that hard to believe. If so, then congratulations, you’ve proven the point I’m trying to make. Yes, I can understand why some people out there like it, but I understand even better why I don’t.

I should start off by explaining how I started watching this series, because it’s a little different than what most people would expect. See, I used to go to an anime club. It was a good club, and it got me into quite a few series, but not everything they showed me was great. Partway through one meeting, they turned on a show about magical girls. This was before the hype-wagon started up, so I had literally no idea what would happen later on in the show. And my overall reaction to that first episode? “Eh.” The characters were bland, I couldn’t find anything to identify with, and even the trippier visuals reminded me of the episode of Dream Eater Merry we watched half an hour before.

Of course that didn’t last forever, and eventually we got to that moment. You all know what I’m talking about. It’s the moment that, in my opinion, best solidifies the difference between how I saw Madoka and how everyone else did. Because when most people saw that scene, their reaction was “Oh wow, I’ve never seen anything like this before!” And when I saw it, my reaction was “Oh God, not this again!”

Anyone who knows the name Mohiro Kitoh (or Joss Whedon, I guess) knows about stories that pretend to be something they’re not. They present their audience with an established setting and then, with all the subtlety of a Michael Bay film, take something away to reveal how serious the show is. Maybe they’ll kill someone or nuke something or, in one case, have a cute side character put a knife to her own wrist. I’ve seen it happen enough times now that, frankly, it’s gotten old. If a series wants to impress me, it has to do more than that.

That’s another big problem I had: I didn’t care. What I saw before that moment was a set of stereotypical characters (the hero, her BFF, the mentor, the furry thing, and the dark one) in a stereotypical setting. After that, the series suddenly decided that I cared immensely about them without giving me any other reason to. This is why I find it funny when people say that non-anime fans would like this show, since it was clearly tailor-made for the magical girl audience and the reactions they would have.

But even after all that, I had difficulty finding anything to connect to. I didn’t think it was possible, but the characters felt flatter after episode 3 than before it. Apparently in this world, “deep characterization” is equivalent to “has a single-minded obsession with one other person”. It really felt like Sayaka’s immediate reaction to anything is “Yes, but how does this affect my relationship with Kamijou?” Hell, her witch fight seemed to loudly shout at the audience that there isn’t one other thought in her head.

Homura was even worse, since her obsession seemed to greatly cloud her judgment. I actually asked a few people about her odd actions during the show, and I was told that she doesn’t care who dies if it doesn’t affect her relationship with Madoka. I have two very big problems with that, though. One, how does that make her likable? Two, how does that explain her letting Kyouko kill herself when she’s the one person who could help her?

And as for Kyubey, you could argue that his obsession is the entire point of his character. Maybe it is, but doing it on purpose doesn’t make him any more likable than the others.

Madoka herself had a different problem, in that she had almost no personality of her own. It’s a common problem in a lot of shows, and simply having her cry a lot doesn’t fix it here. At least other bland leads know how to fight or get some kind of romantic subplot or something. Madoka, for most of the series, never felt like more than a MacGuffin with feet.

Then there’s Kyouko. Her introduction, in all honesty, was easily the high point of the series. She had a different way of thinking than the others, she provided actual personal conflict, and she seemed to have a pre-established relationship with the older girls. Sadly, this didn’t last long. At the end of episode 6, the show decided to throw out their conflict and her entire personality because those things weren’t dark enough. Kyouko got the same “deep characterization” as the others and became focused almost entirely around her relationship with Sayaka. I’ve honestly never seen a character this cynical, yet this easy to befriend, since her tragic backstory should make it far harder to get close to her than that.

That brings me to the other big issue I had with this show: the big shock moments feel overdone. I understand that finding out your soul is in the palm of your hand can be distressing, but was it really enough to cause Kyouko and Sayaka to have complete personality changes? After seeing and experiencing all that they’ve gone through, I find it very hard to believe something so metaphysical could affect them like that. This isn’t the only time it’s an issue, either. I officially have to call bullshit on the idea that Mami would shoot her own friends after learning the truth about magical girls. After the encounter with Witch!Sayaka, she didn’t say anything or even wait a full minute before shooting Kyouko, and yet it’s treated as such a hard decision. Do you understand yet why this show can be irritating?

It’s especially hard to believe in contrast to their indifference to what should be the most shocking part of the show: finding out the existence of witches in the first place. These girls walk home from school one day to find the world warping around them and horrible monsters emerging to try and horribly kill them. After the encounter, their first reaction to the whole thing is “Aw cool, you have a musket!” Throughout the show, I never got the feeling that witches were that big a deal. Even after seeing Mami die fighting one, they’re sad about the death of a friend, but it never seems to register that it was a witch that did it. Hell, they’re marching back into witch lairs the very next episode! Do these girls have strong wills or not?

I think, to conclude all of that, I should say what I think is really the problem with Madoka Magica: it tries way, way too hard to be dark and depressing. It resorts to a lot of tricks to catch the viewer off guard – massive tone shifts, multiple consecutive shock moments, trippy visuals, zooming in on a villain’s face for dramatic effect (did anyone else find that funny?) – but it felt like it was all just an act the show was putting on to look cool. I’ve seen and enjoyed quite a few dark series, like Claymore, Darker than Black, Psyren, or anything by Naoki Urasawa, but the difference is that those series didn’t need to try to be dark. They just put together a well written story, and that’s how it ended up coming out. I haven’t watched Fate/Zero (and after this show, probably never will), so I can’t say if this is what all of Gen Urobuchi’s shows are like, but it seems like he’s desperately trying to be a certain kind of writer, and for me, that just hurt more than anything.

That’s how I felt about Madoka Magica, and you might never have guessed that this was possible from the hype it’s been getting. That’s why I feel like mindlessly praising a series is a bad idea, because not everyone feels the same way as you do about something. I probably wouldn’t hate this series the way I do if not for the ridiculous hype it gets. Again, I can understand why people like this series, since the overall art-style is so different, and if you like those kinds of characters, it can leave you feeling very emotional. Or so I’m told. But you should also try to understand how not everyone likes the same sort of shows, and try not to shove your viewpoints down their throat.

in Film Review

I have just finished watching what may be the worst film I have ever seen. And that really is saying something. I’ve seen ‘The Room’, ‘Troll 2’, ‘Birdemic’, ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ and ‘Battlefield Earth’ but at least they had some redeeming features. They were all, in some way enjoyable. They fall into the category of film that can be described as being so bad that they are good. It is fun to watch them just because they are so bowel-shatteringly awful and the important thing to remember is that each film takes themselves completely and utterly seriously. Cheerleader Autopsy doesn’t fall into this category. It falls into the so bad, it’s bad category and one of the reasons for this is because it’s intentionally trying to be funny and as far as horror comedies go, it makes yesterday’s entry, ‘Horny House of Horror’ look like Shaun of the Dead.

So what makes Cheerleader Autopsy so painfully unfunny? Is it the crude, incredibly lowbrow humour that includes a close up of someone hacking of their own penis (is every film I review this week going to involve some form of genital mutilation?), pressing down just above a dead girls corpse to make a jet of water shoot from her vagina and a hillbilly mistakenly shooting himself in the head when he thinks there is something wrong with his gun? No, I generally consider myself to be quite immature but these jokes just weren’t hitting home. I think what it may have been was the constant stream of immature and gross out humour. I think back to the films that I love which have quite a high level of what could be considered juvenile humour, such as the films of Kevin Smith, and the reason I’ve enjoyed them is because whilst they do have that level of immaturity, they are well written and always have something else going on in them as well, something substantial that raises the level of the film as a whole. Cheerleader Autopsy is poorly written, cramming as many stupid jokes in as it can within it’s short (but seemingly excruciatingly long) 73 minute run time and it has nothing of substance to fall back on.

So what is the plot of Cheerleader Autopsy? Well, that’s kind of like asking what is the meaning of life. There could be many interpretations but the question itself is practically unanswerable. There’s a cheerleader team called the Stinkwater Beavers (oh, the hilarity!), they get killed, there is a mental mortician who also happens to be the sheriff of the town and his nephew who works as his assistant. The mortician has another assistant who’s a bit socially retarded because he has a small penis (he’s the guy who chops off his own in order to attach a larger member from a body that’s brought in) and now that I think about it, I think there’s only one actual autopsy… although I suppose the film isn‘t called Cheerleader Autopsies so far enough. Oh and there’s jokes and hints about necrophilia and eating the brains of foetuses littered throughout. Now that I think about it, maybe it is the crude humour that makes this suck. I mean, eating the brains of foetuses? I’m a man who regularly makes jokes about paedophilia and even I think that’s going a bit too far.

Of course, the humour can’t be completely held responsible here. There’s also the terrible acting, terrible editing, terrible sound, terrible camera work, terrible picture quality and terrible everything. If you’ve seen Birdemic, imagine all of these things being a fraction better than that and yet Birdemic still remains the far more enjoyable film. Look, I’m really sick of thinking about this film and I’ve got a pub quiz to get ready for. Time to get completely drunk. To sum up just imagine you had a really stupid friend with a camcorder and a worrying level of access to a number of Real Dolls. The result would be something like this film. To further sum up, just watch the damn trailer. 0 pints out of five. Laterz.

"What the?" and "I don't even"...

When we last saw All New Diana, she her timeline had been screwed with, turning her into a  had just fought the Dark Man, the one who lead an invading army through Themyscira, leading to the death of her mother. And with the help of said mother, Diana defeated the dark man, and retrieved the golden Lasso. And she’d discovered she could fly.

The next issue starts with Diana returning home and--- whoa whoa whoa! Where did these amazon’s come from? I’m not kidding, these aren’t the ones Diana saved earlier! I... think... Um, where did they go again? Never mind.

Apparently these Amazons have always been there. What happened to the cloaked figures? And... Diana now has a talking black cat? Um, Did I miss an issue? And why do I suddenly feel like I’m on the set for Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

Okay, so it takes a bit to piece it all together, but apparently, Diana wasn’t raised by the cloaked figures in the sewers, like I originally thought. She was raised by her Amazonian sisters in several safe houses all over the world. Now she lives in what looks like the Themiscyrian embassy from the last universe. Even has the talking lion statues.

I approve :)

The talking cat is actually Galenthias, an amazonian priestess of the goddess Hecate, who turned herself into a cat to. As far as I know, she never existed before this comic. But every story needs a pet sidekick right? Right? We also meet Adrastelia, who is guarding the entrance, also, didn’t exist before this comic and...

*Fangirl scream*

Eeeeeeh! It’s Philippus!

Shuush. I like the character. And I'm sure there won’t be any other awesome guest appearances in this series that will make me squeal.

Oh and apparently, Diana likes to listen to loud... punk(?) music. Actually, it’s a clever ploy to make everyone think she’s fast asleep, while she sneaks out the window.

The scene switches and the true enemies of the series is revealed: The Morrigan. And wow this reveal is anti climatic.

We get a few uninteresting poses as they stand in front of a battle scene in the congo, (though them talking about the deaths of children are a little unnerving), a few more uninteresting scenes in their headquarters and then some exposition. And... apparently the Dark Man’s name was Lucius. I think. Holy invisible jet, this issue is just burning question marks into my retinas...

Anyway, the Morrigan is the goddess of war made up by a trinity of goddess, Anann, Bellona and Enyo. They “feed on the horror of war” and “grow fat on the blood of the innocent dead”. However, Enyo was killed some time ago, leaving the trinity incomplete and weakened. They return from the congo to their headquarters, where several magical objects, including the severed head of medusa, and the two stoned humans (make your own joke), are waiting. Sick of the failures of mortal humans, Anann transforms the two men into new servants: Cernuinnos and the Minotaur. They order the two new hunters to destroy Diana “In body and in spirit”

While Diana is out, some of the other Amazon’s are investigating a destroyed amazon temple look-alike. They find a pit of skeletons and an alter with the Morrigan symbols. They discover dolls on the ground, dressed in different versions of a “garish” amazon outfit: an outfit that readers would recognize as Modern Age Wonder Woman costume. (“Garish” funny guys. Real funny.) A figure in the shadows steals one of the dolls and leaves.

Now we get another flashback of Diana’s childhood, this time at one of the refugee camps she grew up in. When Diana found injustice, weather is was a child being beaten, saving a prostitute from a pimp, or a village from a army, Diana always “went to war against it”, even if her sisters wanted her to hide.

Right now, Diana is warring in another way. She’s pawning a Themiscyrian artifact, and then takes the money it to a single mother Brianna and her son . Diana had save them while back from a man name Greg, and helps them out now and again. Harry gives Diana a drawing he made of her: one with Diana wearing a very familiar costume.

Okay, comic, you can stop teasing us now. I kid, but this is one of my favourite scenes in the whole comic. We get to see Diana acting like the Diana I love: Helping with her heart and brain and not just her fists.

Philippus suddenly shows up at the window, and tells Diana that they must leave. But before they can, Cernuinnos and several soldiers show up and a battle begins. While this is happening, the Minotaur kidnaps Henry. The man from the temple sneaks into the apartment and draws a symbol of the Morrigan on the wall.

Philippus is eventually killed by the centaur, in a horribly bloody and graphic scene. And Diana, enraged again, kills him. She rejoins the other amazons, who recognize the symbol in the apartment as the Morrigan's. Diana decides to go to the temple, but not before promising to Brianna that she will rescue Henry.

We switch to the Morrigan’s headquarters, where the Morrigan finally reveal their plan. The attack on Themyscira and the amazon’s, chasing Diana across the planet; it has all been a ploy to darken Diana with hatred and vengeance, in order to turn her into there new sister, and complete their trinity. (We also get to meet there servant/slave, Ajax. I like Ajax. You will see why later.

Now they begin there next phase: They resurrect new servants to kill Diana: three resurrected amazon’s that died on Themyscira: GigantaCheetah, and Artemis.

Attack of the Cameos!

O_O

... Okay, that was pretty awesome. Also kinda a mind screw. But an awesome mind-screw.

Aaaanyway, the Morrigan “gift” the three with the sprits of vengeance, jealously and unceasing. The three amazons’ believing that Diana and the rest of there sisters abandoned them to die, begin their hunt. They reach the safe house, and begin killing each of the amazons.

The amazon’s take Diana to the ruined temple, where the dolls are. During a vicious battle with some undead soldiers, we can see that Diana is becoming more and more enveloped in rage after Philippus’ death.

... I suggest some warm milk. And anger management therapy.

They head down a secret path, into the sewers, and find a mural with an amazon wearing the same outfit Diana saw in Henry’s picture.

My gosh, this comic drops costume teasers more then Smallvile.

Diana and the amazons discover the Minotaur and rescue henry. Catching him in the lasso’s noose, he is forced by the lasso to tell Diana the Morrigan’s plan: They want Diana to become a vengeful killer so she can become their third sister. He is just a distraction. As they speak, the rest of the Amazon’s are under attack.

But the Minotaur, unable to bare what he has become, uses the golden lasso to hang himself. Diana can see that the true soul of the man is still trapped in the dead Minotaur's body. Diana is tempted to destroy his soul by the amazons with her but decides not to, deciding that if she was her mother, she would have shown mercy. Diana uses the golden lasso’s power to free the man’s soul. Diana decides that despite all the anger within her, she can control it and be a more loving person.

Diana and the other amazon’s return, only to find the embassy in ruins. Diana is forced to watch as the rest of the amazons around her are killed by Giganta, Cheeta and Artemis, before the three resurrected amazon’s begin to take there anger out on her. Diana is eventually trapped in an alley, and is given a few words form the cloaked figures. They warn her that the three resurrected amazon’s are not in control of themselves. Then disappear.

The Morrigan start heading towards Diana’s location when the spirit of there dead sister Enyo, appears and warns them not to go, and that Diana is too powerful to become their third.

The battle between the amazon’s continue, until Diana is finally knocked unconscious. The resurrected amazons prepare to end Diana’s life, when the shadowed man from earlier appears. He hypnotizes the three amazons and sends them away.

The man calls Diana his “Wonder Woman” and is revealed to be the famous Wonder Woman nemesis, Dr. Psycho.

End of part 3

-------------------------------------------

Okay, I did say this was going to be in 3 parts. But... I have been on and off sick for a while and this part would have been soooo much more longer if i didn't. Anyway, in a couple of days will be the final part

SS/OM: All New Wonder Woman Review Part 2: The Dark Man

All New Wonder Woman Review Part 2

And so it begins...

Since I'm going to be referring to them quite a bit, I'll be calling the “previous” Wonder Woman, as “Modern Age Wonder Woman” (MA Wondy for short) and All New Wonder Woman as, well, “All New Wonder Woman” or “All New Diana”. Duh.

The Story:

Now, to help fans along, issue 600 was a real treat! Including illustrations, letters and comics about Modern Age Wonder Woman.

And introduction from Lynda Carter (aka Patron Saint of Wonder Woman), illustrations by Adam HughesNichola ScottJason WrightIvan ReisOclair Albert/ Rod ReisGuillem MarchGreg HornFrancis ManaoulBrian BuccellatoPhil JimenezHi-Fi, JockShane Davis/ Jaime Mendoza/ and Nei Ruffino. We also get a few stories of Modern Age Wondy:

“Valedictorian” by writer Gail Simone and art by George Perez/Scott Koblish/Hi-Fi. It’s a great story that starts as team up with Wonder Woman and several other heroines (including Ravager and a few lesser knowns) against Prof. Ivo’s Cyber-sirens. After the battle, we get a few scenes of the other heroines having flustered fangirl moments over Wondy, before Wondy takes off to the graduation of Vanessa Kapatelis. Vanessa is one of the first Americans Wondy befriended when leaving the island in the Modern Age. She’s been through a lot of hardships ever since, including being brainwashed into becoming Silver Swan, another Wondy villain. The story is a great tribute to Wonder Woman, and the famed ally of hers.

Next is a short, cute story by Amanda Conner, with Paul Mounts colouring, where Wonder Woman, Power Girl and Bat Girl (Cassandra Cane version) teams up against Egg Fu (Not even kidding) followed by a scene of Wonder Woman giving Power Girl advise on her new cat. There’s also a gag where Wondy asks PG what a “manga monster” is O_o The story is a sweet pause before our next story.

“Fire Power” By Louise Simonson, with art by Edwardo PansicaBob Wiacek, and Pete Pantazis. One more team up between Wonder Woman and Super Man, against Nikos Augeus... who I think is another Wonder Woman enemy. It’s another goody and... strangely a little nostalgic of the vintage comics too.

And Then the reboot begins.

It starts with a prelude comic called “The Sensational Wonder Woman” by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins. The MA Wonder Woman appears to be rescuing a group prostitutes from some men in suits with guns. Typical day. While the battle continues, we get a couple of flashbacks of Wondy’s childhood. But in the mists of the battle, Diana sees a little girl in amazon clothing that we recognize as Diana as a child.. Wonder Woman runs after her, running directly into a portal. The whole time, there is a voice over of two or more people speaking. They muse about Wonder woman and how “Diana is far too undervalued” and that is is time to “Let the Odyssey of Wonder Woman begin” as MA Wondy is enveloped in light.

Its like we're hearing the voices of the guys behind this whole thing -_-;

Now we get to the official reboot by J. Michael Straczynski, I’ll get to the art of the story after my summery.

We are suddenly taken to an alley where the All New Wonder Woman, known only as Diana now, is punching out... more men in suits with guns.. She escapes and heads down to the sewers to where she speaks to... a bunch of cloaked figures? O...kay? Diana demands information as to who has been after her and why. They say she is not ready and walks off in a huff. Against the wishes of the cloaked figures, she goes to see the Oracle of Themysciria, who has taken the form of a punk girl who lives under a bridge. And... has a strange obsession for gum. Huh. Diana demands the same questions, as after some coaxing, the oracle reveals everything.

The Oracle shows Diana a vision of her homeland, Themyscira, and tells her that the way things are now are not how they were suppose to be. That time has been twisted.

When Diana was a child, the gods disappeared, leaving Themyscira unprotected. Then an army arrives, destroying the island, looking for Diana. Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta leaves Diana with the cloaked ones, and escape the island. Hippolyta stays to fight, but after a long battle, is captured by the leader of the army who we eventually come to know as the Dark Man.

With her final breath, and a very dark and striking scene, Hippolyta dives into the flames around her, with the lasso of truth, and dies, swearing that her daughter will kill the mysterious leader. The Dark man takes the lasso as his prize.

Diana comes out of the vision and swears to kill all of them.

She hunts down the men who have been after her, but after hearing that they are taking a plane out of the country, where they have found and are planing to kill a group of Amazonian refugees in Turkey, Diana changes her mind, and sneaks on the wing of the plane. As she does, she gets a flash back of the cloaked ones telling a teenage (and very smug and sarcastic teenager) Diana that one day, she will fly.

She eventually falls asleep and sees Modern Age Wonder Woman, showing off her powers and a very disturbing glare.

Um... Hi?

When she arrives, she finds the hidden Amazons who have taken refuge in a Greek temple, where they are surrounded by soldiers and several tanks. While alone, one of the gods, most likely Aphrodite, judging by the statue, speaks to Diana. She condemns the gods for abandoning them. Aphrodite says that Diana cannot save all the amazons but the gods cannot help her. So, basicly, the Greek Pantheon are the same self serving jerks they were in... well, every incarnation of the DC universe.

Diana decides that she is done hiding and viciously takes on the army on her own, while the rest of the Amazons escape through the desert.

OH, SH*T SON!

As Diana fights the army. But when she is injured, another amazon who Diana just befriended, sends Diana a shield (with Hippolyta's face on it), saving her life. She is then shot down. Now enraged, Diana kills the rest of the army.

After the battle, Diana catches up with the other Amazons. But when they find the Turkish guides they’ve hired to cross the desert, they are already dead. At first they believe it was the army’s doing. But unknowingly to anyone else, Diana can see a group of female monsters, known as the Keres, attacking the souls of the guides. When the Keres realize that Diana can see them, they attack and eventually stab Diana, claiming that they now have Diana’s soul.

Diana wakes up in, of all places, Tartarus, a section of Hades, the Greek realm for the undead. Before the monsters can attack again, Charon, the boat man, appears and scares them away. He tells Diana that Hades has been in chaos since the gods disappear, allowing the Keres to do what they want with the souls in Tartarus. We see all the other souls are fighting an unending war. Charon says he no longer crosses souls across the River Styx, because it the other side is a far worse fate.

He tells Diana that the only way back to the living is to cross the gate protected by Cerberus. And after a few more lines of sarcasm, Diana heads out.

After one more battle with the Keres, (where we also discover that Keres were once beautiful woman that were cursed.) Diana finds Cerberus who... sniffs Diana’s face and then lays down and falls asleep... Okay then.

What she said O_o

Diana wakes up, alive again, a discovers the army has captured her and the amazons. In order to save her fellow amazons Diana makes a deal: she will meet with the Dark Man willingly, and the army will allow the amazons to leave, safely.

Diana goes to meet the leader in battle with her sword and shield embellished with her mothers face. From the sky, flames are shot from a helicopter, creating a ring of fire around Diana. The Dark Man is revealed: a man completely covered in scarring burns, holding the golden lasso of truth.

The Dark Man reveals that he was once a Colonel who executed and tortures anyone the several governments he worked for told him to--- and he enjoyed every moment of it. One day, he was captured by the other side and almost burnt alive for his crimes. Before he died, he made a deal with a mysterious woman, who said that she will save him if he finds and kills the amazons of Themyscira, and and more importatnly Diana.

The two fight, in what I got to say is a beautiful montage. Diana is eventually caught in the noose of the lasso. She realizes that the flames, can hurt the Dark Man, due to having “magical origins”. But it can also kill Diana. So why did the Dark Man bring a deadly, uncontrolable weapon to kill Diana when it can also kill him as well? Even though he already has the unbreakable lasso? Well, obviously because... uh... Irony?

Diana pushes them both into the flames, intending to sacrifice herself.

Suddenly, Diana hears her mothers voice. The spirit of her Hippolyta had been trapped in these flames all these years. She warns Diana not to let her soul be consumed by vengeance and hatred. The larger enemy is still out there but, Diana can stop them. Hippolyta forces Diana to leave the battle field, and destroys the Dark Man by herself. As Diana falls unconscious, Hippolyta tells her that she must find the Morrigan.

By the time Diana wakes up, the flames have died down. She emerges trumpet, with that Golden Lasso in tow.

Diana soon finds the enemies plane. When the pilots see that Diana defeated their boss, they take off. Diana runs after the planed, and leaps into the air, reaching out for the wing. Instead, she discovers that she no longer needs it:

She can now fly.

The scene jumps to a building where two men talk about what to do next, now they their boss is dead. They decide to ask “them” to let them take over. When they open the doors to “them”, both men are turned to stone.

And then things get weird.

End of part 2

All New Wonder Woman Review Part 1

It's about time

*SPOILER WARNING*

Okay, so I know the latest thing to talk about is the New 52. But I'm really really sick of thinking about the DC reboot. That will be later.

Instead I’m going to review a series that just finished right before said reboot: The All New Wonder Woman. It will have to be divided into three parts just because the story is so very long. With part 1 talking about the controversy behind the whole series. And then part two and three being the actual review.

See, I would love to start reviewing the actual comic now... but if I did, I’d have to stop every few minutes to talk about how “this caused a huge uproar” or where the advertising went right or wrong or to tell some of the nay-sayers about where they were right or wrong about the series.

So I’m gonna get it all out of my system and out of the way so I can do a straight up review of the whole series in part two and three

The Controversy:

Mistake number 1.

I say this because--- and I cannot stress this enough--- the All New Wonder Woman WAS NOT A REBOOT. It should never been advertised as such. And I will completely put the blame on DC for this.

Spoiler time: It’s a timeline story. When the series ends, it all goes back to normal. Not even kidding. And because of the New 52, we don’t even get to see long term repercussions. Wonder woman leaves the story learning more about herself. That’s it. Think Superman/Batman: Absolute Power.

DC even explained in the first announcement how Wondy’s timeline is changed by someone, creating a new origin for her. Now she’s growing up on the streets, in hiding, without her mother or the Gods. But by calling it a full on reboot, fans had no idea that this really was just a timeline story. So of course, chaos started. And I can’t completely blame the fans for this, since, well, how were we supposed to know how to react other wise?

Needless to say, everyone HATED this idea. Me included. Wonder Woman’s 600th issue, and they decided to change everything we love about her? Everyone believed they were trying to make her more like Black Canary. Or Batman. Or erase all the Greek myths and activism involved with Wonder Woman. And well, the costume didn’t help.

Ah, yes, the costume. One day, I will talk about Wonder Woman without having to mention one of her many train-wreck costumes. Lets look at this thing, shall we?

Uh...
Image is from the announcement at DC

Uh huh. What did that announcement say again?

It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.”

It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior,” “it’s a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century.”

No. No it doesn’t...

Yes, this is a real costume. We try to ignore it.
Also, heres the link
The bracelets are still there, but made more colourful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work…letting her enemies know that she’s getting closer.”

... That’s just... stupid. (And if you’ve ever seen someone get punched, you’d know that would never work because the insignia is on her wrist)

Okay jokes aside, I personally didn’t mind the outfit. But the overall design is just... weird. And, yes, a little stupid. It mostly had to grow on me over time but I would never want Wondy to wear it again... okay, maybe the bustier and Greek straps. The jacket was bad. The pants were okay except the odd boot design. (Alright, I didn’t like that they were black, but, luckily, most of the artists gave it a bluer shade) But she looks like she’s in her teens, when in-story, Wonder Woman is in her 20s. There wasn’t much of the original Wonder Woman left in this design. The motifs, like the stars and “W”, are there, but... it didn’t feel like wonder woman. I suppose the change was too drastic to handle.

But DC did listen to us. They continued with the story but changed the design a few issues down the line: Scrapped the jacket and the got rid of the silly “leaves a W mark” thing. And when we see her without the jacket, not only does she have Greek styled armbands-- but shoulder straps. Flipping straps. I know I wasn't’ the only fan happy to see that.

Heck Ya!
And for the story, the costume did make sense. Wonder Woman is being hunted down. Her outfit was weird, but it would have been easy for her to sneak into a crowd if she needed too. There’s even a scene where she puts a sweatshirt on, covering her emblem, and sneaks onto the streets.

But by then, the damage was done, fans were already boycotting the story. Which was too bad, because it’s actually a pretty good story.

Okay, this is where I stop giving DC a hard time and point my eyes at the fans. This was not our Wonder Woman. The origin and costume was different. We had no idea that things were going back to normal.

But honestly, I feel some of you guys over reacted.

I’ve already said, I don’t like comic boycotts. I hate them. They aren’t that effective and I would rather read a story first before I judge it.

If you read a story and it was really the most awful thing you have ever read-- that the story really did objectify the characters, insulted them, destroyed their image or say... made them into a walking blow up doll (I’m looking at you, Red Hood and The Outlaws), feel free to go nuts. Protest the slag out of it.

But if you are judging the whole comic, story and all, before you even read it, before it’s even published, by only a single character design and a couple of preview images: Kindly SHUT. UP.

No--NO! I’m serious. Shut. UP. Please. You have no right to judge a whole story you’ve never actually read. And yes, I've done it too. So I know that laying down such judgements only makes you look like a whiny hypocriteand you can miss out on some really good stories.

Didn’t like the costume? Fine, say that. saw a review that walked you through the whole comic and you agreed with the review? Fine again. The comic caused something controversial and insulting? Fine again. But don’t act like you’ve read the story when you haven’t.

I did read the story, and guess what?! It was great! There were good reviews about it! Wasn't for everyone, of course. But even though Diana might not look like Wonder Woman, but she definitely acts like it! There were Easter eggs that a lot of loyalists would get a smile at. Here's the theme of the entire book: What is means to be a “Wonder woman”

And then there is the other issue:

In issue 600 of Wonder Woman,  J. Michael Straczynski, talks about the same issues I've noticed (regarding the fans anyway): That while the other heroes have been given the chance to evolve, wonder woman has not. Most fans don’t want her to change even a little.

He mentions that In Batman Brave and the Bold #33 “many were appalled that wonder Woman told a joke... that she flirted...that she was relaxed and having fun. One podcaster said that Wonder Woman had become like his grandmother, and he didn’t like to see his grandmother being flirty.”

There is something very wrong there. But I've already talked about how fans need to accept change in my last article, so I'd just be repeating myself. And this section has been long enough.

It was a bumpy ride, wasn’t perfect, had a few hiccups but it was still good. And didn’t deserve the crap it got.

Okay, now that that is done with: On to the review!

End of part 1

Shades of Grey - Subjectivity in Reviews

in Thoughts

(Note: This entry taken from this site. To see the reviews I'm talking about, check these two video reviews, or this text preview. I reposted this here because my blog is more about manga, and I thought I'd show this to people who know a lot about reviews.)

Those of you who have seen my reviews have probably noticed that I use a different method of judging the manga than most other reviewers do. Instead of using a numbered score, a letter grade, or even a simple assessment of overall quality, my reviews end with a clear description of who would probably like a series and who wouldn’t. Well, I think it's time I wrote about this particular method of reviewing and why I chose it over the more common methods.

See, I've seen a lot of different reviewers in the last few years. I've seen game reviewers on TV, movie and anime reviewers online, and more than a few reviewer blogs. I've seen critical reviewers, casual ones, and quite a few people who just like tearing into things they hate. And because of this, I came to notice a few trends that I didn't enjoy as much as the other reviewers seemed to. In particular, there were three things they did that I decided had to stop when I started writing my first video.

The first of these concepts relates to the specific biases every reviewer has. Lots of people like to discuss the pros and cons of a work, but it can sometimes be difficult to tell whether a certain quality is good or bad. I know lots of people who shun anything with even the slightest hint of moe, but there are obviously many fans of it, or else it wouldn’t still be around. If a work is extremely childish, would you list that as a pro or con? Someone can spend all day talking about the artwork in a series, but if you don’t care about that, it just becomes a lot of hoots and clicks.

Then there’s the use of a grading system to decide the quality of a work. Oh, I’m sure we’ve all had times when a particular score didn’t go with what we thought of a series. I remember X-Play going on about websites that rank games out of 100, and that scores should just be generalizations to show the reviewers overall opinion. While I agree about the problem with larger numbers, the fact is that a review shouldn’t be a generalization at all, and using smaller numbers won’t fix that problem. If you’re just deciding on how a game looks to the general audience, it won’t help those people who don’t belong there, especially if you get the general audience wrong, as many reviewers do.

Lastly, the thing I knew had to change most of all. This is something that I’ve seen happen quite often, but which not many people seem to be aware is a problem. It can be best summarized in a single quote, which I made it a goal to avoid using in any video I make:

“You are not allowed to hate this series!”

I’m sure you’re all aware of the opposite of this, where angry forum-goers like to yell at you for liking something, but I think this needs to be addressed as well. When a reviewer gets so into a series that they want everyone to watch or play it, and they simply can’t fathom anyone disliking it for any reason. In the end, all it really accomplishes is a great letdown for a large number of the people listening. It’s another feeling we all may be aware of, but which not many have considered something that needs fixing. It’s difficult provide the audience with less information than to claim perfect harmony or perfect emptiness in a work, and it’s something I feel shouldn’t be repeated.

The most common defense I’ve heard regarding these kinds of reviews is that “it’s just your opinion.” That’s the idea that someone else thinking differently doesn’t take away from the genius of the story. However. this brings up an interesting point: can a series whose quality is subjective possibly be considered flawless? After all, if there are people who genuinely don’t like it, then there must be something it isn’t doing right. And if one opinion is subjective, then logically the opposite opinion must be as well. I’ll probably talk more about this in a future post, because I’d like to get more specific about it, but until then just know that there will always be people who don’t like something, and it’s a big mistake to ignore them.

Those were the kinds of things I didn’t want happening in my reviews, so I made my own system as a way of preventing them. I felt that by organizing the different fans into groups, for who would and wouldn’t like the series, I could avoid the problems of grading systems, I could account for even my own biases, and hopefully I can keep myself from gushing too strongly about anything. Personally, I don’t think there’s any manga or anime I’ve seen where I can’t find something to criticize, but I can still appreciate them despite that. Sure, I may not be able to critique truly terrible works this way, but I’m sure my brain will be thankful I don’t have to read that stuff.

I said a little while back that I have plans to eventually post reviews on Youtube (I've encountered technical problems as well as school since then).

Anyway, one segment I might do are reviews of old Russian language movies, mostly from the USSR (also mostly positive). I'm wondering if I can ever actually post them- America has fair use policies, but I don't quite understand the Free Use policy from Russia, and I don't want to get in legal trouble if I ever post the stuff on Blip. Can I do it legally?

Also, if it influences the law at all, I live in the United States, and I'm a U.S. citizen.

NOTE: This rant review starts off with a story and large amounts of side eye and rage.

Earlier this week, I was browsing Metacritic's highest rated games according to the critics and I noticed that GTA IV was still at the top with a 98 metascore. I side-eyed it a bit but I decided to move on. After all, different people enjoy different games and have fun with different styles and I can remember having some fun with GTA even though it wasn't my cup of tea.

But then I saw this.

Hello my name is Anthony and I am from Chicago. I have been watching That Guy with the Glasses before the website was even made. I was hoping to make a review series called “5,10,25, 100, complete”. The series will be me reviewing games after playing them for 5 hours, television series after watching them for 10 episodes, mostly anime, and after reading 25 chapters of a comic book or manga or the first 100 pages of a book. I chose those numbers because it seems like a good amount of time to be hooked by the thing or understand how well it is going to be. Then if within that amount of time the thing I am reviewing seems good I will make a review after I complete it incase latter it turns horrible. My reviews after the first couple, if people enjoy them, will be by video because as you can tell my grammar is not that good. Later on I am hoping to start the series “With nostalgic goggles off” where I review something that I would be too young to experience and review it based on the time it was made and not today’s standards. I will hope to make these reviews weekly or bi-weekly.

Though I have a little problem with starting these reviews and this is where the members of thatguywiththeglasses.com come in I need to choose what to review first. So if someone would like to make a recommendation to start me off it would be very helpful and leave your recommendations in the comments below. I want to start this series as soon as possible. Thanks for all recommendations and i will try to fill as many as possible.

Ps. Leave a comment if you rather have me do videos for eachone because my grammar is so horrible or if you have and recommendations. thanks to everyone who helps

Well, here is something completely different that I normally don’t do: a review of something!

I’ve recently completed the latest game from American McGee, Alice: Madness Returns and I do have some things to say about it that I find a lot of reviews are not talking about. Now I know I’m not a professional at this so if my opinions make you sad or angry, just remember that these are just MY opinions and you can judge the game for yourself.

*WARNING*: HERE BE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW! MAJOR PLOT POINTS WILL BE REVEALED FOR BOTH GAMES! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Let’s start off proper and get the back story of the first game.

In the first game, it starts off with the young Alice and her family sleeping in their beds when the family cat Dinah accidentally knocks over a lamp that starts a fire. Alice escapes the house burned but alive however her family dies the fire. This tragedy causes Alice to lose her mind and is committed to Rutledge Asylum. After 10 years of being catatonic, she receives a call from the White rabbit and is once again sent down the rabbit hole. While there she learns of the Queen of hearts tyranny. (Who is also called the Red Queen although this is a common mistake when dealing with the Alice in Wonderland stories as the Red Queen is the chest piece character in the second book.) She meets up with the Cheshire cat now looking mangy and severely wicked, who takes it upon himself to act as her guide in Wonderland. Throughout the game we continue to learn of the Queens cruel grip upon the land out as well as find out that some of Alice’s dearest friends have changed their way and have become more darker, sinister characters. After many hardships and tragedies that she goes through she eventually confronts the Queen within her lair. She eventually defeats the Queen, reclaims her sanity, and is released from the asylum.
