11. SF Debris.  Him and Nash really helped me get into classic doctor who.  Being able to look where to start as he done videos on that.  Plus who's who of doctor who and great look at missing episodes.  Plus whole thing on how the episodes are missing what happen to them.  Also does some fun reviews of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows.
10. Derek The Bard.  I really like his reviews because there are few out there that look at comically at books as he does.  Plus he gets a bonus in my book for loving Atomic Robo.  He did remind me of a book I been meaning to get for a while.
9. Phill from The Bunny Perspective.  What can I say there isn't anything like watching a review of movies and anime (sometimes) from puppets perspective.  He is funny and enjoyable to watch.
8. Video Games Awesome.  It is fun to watch them play and review the games live, on blip, or youtube.  Help them out and hey if you are in chat your comments on the show sometimes.
7. JewWario.  I love look at import games and not just.  He tries to help you find way play on it your system.  I love the fact branching out to Kamen Rider movies and stuff like that.
6. Phelous.  Even though I disagree with him turtles forever but love his look at bad horror movies.  Hey he doesn't even have problem making fun of his own Mortal Komedy.  When you look back at Lost and the Man In Black like he did he has a point about it.
5. Cinema Snob.  I just love watching his tearing apart some of the worst trash in cinema.  Though I have to keep sound down on some videos.  I hate to hear someone I live with some of noises from the movies he reviews.
4. Obscurus Lupa.  From Howling series to Subspecies series to even We Wish A Turtle christmas (which I didn't even know existed to her review).  I just love her videos.  From stupid action to stupid horror to whatever.  April fools star wars: a new hope was great.  Scott Shaw be damned.
3. Nostalgia Critic.  What can I say as the guy the site That Guy With The Glasses is named is very funny.  Even if you agree with him or not always finds ways to entertain.
2. Nash.  Why Radio Dead Air?  Well his Doctor Who review are fun well WTFIWWY is one of the funniest shows I watch weekly.  Oh heck despite chat not loading for me right I still watch live edition ever week.  Oh heck he introduced me to Derek The Bard videos as he showed them from time to time.
1. Linakara.  I am a huge comic book fan and always nice to find someone who comics that hates One More Day as I do.  Someone also who hates some of things marvel and dc do as I do.  Well we might not always agree on books but story lines are fun and well references to Doctor Who, Pokemon, Star Trek make me geek out.

Hello, everyone, and a happy 2012 to you all.

Around this time last year (give or take a month) I created a list called "The Top 10 Shows/Personalities on TGWTG."  A list that to this date remains the most commented on of all my lists.  I really did not expect the response I got.  And while I understand that lightning rarely strikes twice, I still feel that the time has come for a new improved list of my favorite TGWTG shows.  Things have changed between 2011 and 2012.  Shows that I initially liked fell by the wayside for one reason or another while other shows burst onto the scene to my surprise and delight.  And here are the shows, let me know what you think and feel free to add your own favorites in the comments section.

10.  Bad Movie Beatdown 3 - I’d still like to know what happened to Bad Movie Beatdowns 1 and 2.  Only a complete idiot would start a series on a sequel and then do origins, but that’s neither here nor there.  Film Brain’s one-man review show feels plenty generic.  He doesn’t distinguish himself from his fellow reviewers by doing anything different.  Whether he chooses not to or is incapable of doing it I don’t know.  But half the time it sounds like he’s whining.  And there are few things more ear gouging than hearing a Brit whine.  Not to say he doesn’t have his good moments, but his opening feels like he’s trying to hammer home his point that Transformers 2 sucked (considering about 80% of his clips in the opening is from that particular movie).  Okay, we get it, you didn’t like Transformers 2.  But don’t forget, I’ve seen people who are die-hard fans of the l/a Transformers franchise and if they heard your review about it... I can only pray for you, my friend.  If he steps up his game (and perhaps do a little diversifying) he can definitely go far.

9.  Obscurus Lupa Presents - I think it’s safe to say that to make an internet review show on the level of the top tier of this list is not easy.  So for Lupa to do what she does with little to no outside assistance it’s quite refreshing (and inspiring for me).  Still, with the exception of her always-changing hairstyle, her show feels no different from Film Brain’s.  It always seems like she’s shy, unable to express extreme emotions like some of her elders.  Nevertheless, she exerts a positive energy that, in a network filled with ranting and raving critics, is a nice refreshing touch.

8.   Todd in the Shadows Pop Song Reviews - I was actually aware of Todd when I filled out my initial list about a year ago.  However, at the time, I was reluctant to include him on it since I haven’t really seen enough episodes to confidently gauge his review prowess.  Now that it’s been a year and he has multiple episodes up including several crossovers, I feel confident.  And I’m glad to say that Todd genuinely surprised me.  Todd has two unique things going for him.  The first is his review material, pop songs, something rarely seen on this web site (I mean you have multiple reviewers for movies, anime, and video games).  I have not met another pop or mainstream reviewer song.  Todd’s second unique feature is his gimmick.  You never see his face during his review.  And those few times he does step into the light, a majority of his face is covered by hid hoodie and black bandana.  I met Todd at the New York Comic Con in 2011 and even attended the after party.  He seems to be a nice guy in real life and his piano playing skills are better than portrayed in his videos.  And like his man of mystery motif, Todd’s non-descript appearance belies a hidden comic value.  Not to mention the dynamic he shares with both Obscurus Lupa and Nostalgia Chick is pure comedy gold.

Well, it's been several months since the last time I wrote up one of these so I'm going to go for a change of pace and pick someone that will be a challenge to write a critique about. Why would it be so hard, you may ask. Lupa is a wonderful reviewer with awesome jokes, great insight and has a proven love of film. That, my friends, is exactly why it is so hard to write this. As those of you who have read my previous reviews know, I usually put out all the good and bad for a particular main contributor on the site. I do love to watch all of them but even I am not immune to the charm that is Lupa, thus, I will be hard pressed to discuss anything I see as being wrong with her reviews.

That established, some backstory. Obscurus Lupa (which, by the way, roughly translates to 'hidden/dark/complex she-wolf) reviews genre films and, as her name suggests, many of them are very obscure to those who stay firmly within the mainstream film flow. Many of them are of the delightfully cheesy sort and Lupa helps to reinforce this notion by pointing out at the end of her reviews that the movies she watches are usually good for a laugh with friends, rather than being scintillating masterpieces. She revels in the ridiculous and silly, especially when it's trying to be passed off as serious and her attitude is rather catching.

Now for the hard part. I re-watched nearly all of her reviews to get a firm idea of what could be seen as good or bad. It was great and I enjoyed them while watching kettle-popped corn and playing Soul Calibur V. And that's when I realized what could be the first bit of work that is needed. Unlike many of the other reviewers who rely on sight-gags with edited images and the like, Lupa does not do this nearly as much, letting the films speak for themselves and stating how awesome the idea of what you're watching is going to be.

For instance, in her Robo Vampire review, Lupa exclaims just how awesome the image of Robocop fighting Chinese, jumping zombie-vampires is. The thing is, this type of gag requires that someone work on the same train of thought as Lupa herself. You have to be the kind of person that appreciates all that cheese and has a taste for it. If you don't and if you are more or less serious about film and what you're watching, you aren't going to see it as 'Awesome' but rather 'Stupid'. Her brand of humor requires a touch of immaturity that some people simply do not have or will not understand.

Another problem is her actual film choice. Despite how much fun she makes her reviews, I will be honest and say that, until I began doing this write up, I had not watched the majority of her reviews. The reason is that because the films are rather obscure, the desire to see someone review them is lessened. Everyone has experience with the Care Bears, for instance, and so when the Nostalgia Critic reviews something involving the Care Bears, everyone sort of jumps at it because we can relate. I don't like kung-fu and action movies and so trying to watch foreign action films with bad dubbing or subs makes me less inclined to watch her reviews. Once again, it comes back to needing to work in the mindset of Lupa, rather than being a casual watcher.

Why Is It Such A Dick?

The simple answer is because it's a cat.  Cats are dicks.

The more entertaining answer:

In the preface to his review of comic-book ads, Linkara used his new spaceship's weaponry to destroy the house of Douchey McNitpick.  Douchey, like all people who whine on the internet about the entertainment they choose to watch completely for free, was secretly one of the Squiddly-Dooes from "The Hidden".  Seeking revenge on Lupa for the way she so callously mocked his people and their traditions (like forcibly reanimating the corpses of the dead so they can pull people apart), the Squiddly-Douche leapt into the sleeping body of her cat one night.

Why I wanted to blog this:

Purely to imagine the child-like expression of nerdish joy spreading across Allison's face if she should ever happen to read this blog.

The PutzCast: Apollo Z. Hack Interview (Featuring the true story of why Apollo left TGWTG)

in What's Up?

When you think of internet reviewers a few names come to mind.

  • The Nostalgia Critic
  • The Angry Video Game Nerd
  • Apollo Z. Hack

And when you think of films makers other names come up like.

  • Quentin Tarantino
  • George A. Romero
  • Matt Burkett

But 2 of these people are one and the same. The Mastermind behind "The Reviewaverse Saga" and I do mean mastermind. But more recently there was a bit of controversy about the mysterious leaving of Apollo from TGWTG.com. And so far his reasons for leaving have remained a mystery. There were rumors but there is always more to rumors than are apparent.

So here to give the full story on why he left is Matt "Apollo Z. Hack" Burkett.

So I decided to give it a shot putting together an intro for Lupa. I sent it to her on twitter and she re-tweeted it to her followers. So it's been seen by her no need to send it along. I just wanted to post it here. (The description of each has much more detail, so I suggest you read them instead of having me copy it out :p)

This was my first attempt. One night, I couldn't sleep so I decided to put together a video. The song was a temp track and I agree (and replied) to the commenter. The song didn't quite fit.

Afterwards, I found a better song. I had to move the second video to blip, because youtube muted the audio because of the song.

Advice for Bronies

I'm sure many of us have seen Obscurus Lupa's newest review of My Little Pony: Princess Promenade, wherin Lupa is utterly annoyed by the cartoon. As with any negatively-slanted review, there's bound to be a few people cropping up to defend the work from what they feel in unjust criticism. Fine, okay. But the sheer volume of stuff I've seen from the My Little Pony fandom has been absolutely staggering, appearing to turn this into Lupa's own personal Mako incident. But while the fan dumb over Mako was at least slightly justified due to Doug's kinda insensitive crack about his voice and Mako's recent death, the reaction to Lupa's MLP review has been completely batshit crazy.

First off, I'll make it plainly clear, no I have never watched this Friendship Is Magic show. And I really have no intention of watching it. Until Saturday, I hadn't even heard of it or the fans of it, who apparently go by the label of "bronies." And I have to say, I now realize just how damn lucky I was to not have known about these things. From what I've seen, these bronies take this show about as seriously as Twihards take Twilight. The angry comments and tweets I've read and have heard about from Lupa and other people being harassed do not speak well for this fandom.

Now to be fair, I know that there are probably quite a few fans of this show who are much more level-headed and aren't taking up arms over the things Lupa said and/or didn't say in her review. So right now, I'd like to make a plea to all of you who are able to control your fandom enough and are still able to enjoy your show despite someone making a critical video of a special not even associated with the show from what I can tell. I urge all of you to GET AHOLD OF YOUR COMMUNITY! While you are remaining silent on this apparent issue, people of your ilk are going to war and in doing so are really pissing a lot of people off. I made the comparison to Twihards earlier and I can't imagine that you more sane fans would appreciate being painted with that same brush. So get out there and start denouncing these people and tell them to get back in line.
