Spoilers ahead.

Starting a new little project on this blog and going to try and watch every film released in 2011 (at least as listed on Wikipedia) and as luck would have it, I must begin with a Nicolas Cage film. Now normally I like to do a video review of Cage’s films but I’m having some technical issues in that department so I have to resort to something barbaric like typing out the words with my fingers rather than speaking them with my mouth parts. Enough of my problems, on to the review!

The film opens during the crusades which were apparently fought by quipping Americans who may or may not be trying to do English-esque accents. I honestly can’t tell if Nicolas Cage is trying speak with an English accent and just failing or if it’s just the way his voice goes when he’s trying to speak in somewhat faux Olde English. Ron Perlman, on the other hand, doesn’t even seem to bother and honestly, his performance is more enjoyable because of it. Anyway, the two Crusadery chums are hacking their way through battles, killing for God and drinking with wenches and just generally having as good a time as two knights can. After a while though, they come to the realisation that they aren’t just killing deserving infidel warriors but also women and children too. They decide that enough is enough and leave the Crusades and go on the run as deserters.

So they find themselves wandering around medieval Europe. What are they doing? Well, that’s never really explained. Probably going from village to village and righting wrongs where they can. That’s the ind of shit that righteous outlaws are always doing from Robin Hood to The A-Team. Anyway, they come across a kingdom blighted by the plague where they are recognised and arrested. However they are given a holy quest by a plague-ridden Christopher Lee (in one of the more bizarre cameo appearances in film history). The quest is to deliver an alleged witch to a monastery where a rite will be performed that will remove the curse of the plague. Cage is reticent to sign up and work for the church again but ultimately relents in exchange for a guarantee that the accused witch will receive a fair trial and that he and Perlman are given full pardons.

They are accompanied on their quest by a priest, the unfortunately named Debelzaq, a swindler/merchant named Hagamar, another knight whose own land has been ravaged by the plague, causing him to lose his daughter, named Ulrich and a young aspiring knight Kay. They set off and, honestly, not much actually happens on the way. There’s a few deaths and few things which are possibly meant to make you wonder if the girl actually has supernatural powers or not whilst actually makes it pretty fucking obvious that she has supernatural powers. What happens could best be described as dude gets stabbed, there’s a rickety bridge on which no one dies, some demon wolves and then bam. They’re at the monastery.

Sploich Reviews The Rugrats Movie (1998)

in Film Review

I'm reluctant to say whether I was ever a fan of Rugrats on Nickelodeon. Honestly I remember spending more of my childhood on The Disney Afternoon or on Cartoon Network. I guess I was a fan to some extent though because I do remember seeing this movie in theaters, and this is pretty much the first time I've seen it since then. And while I have a really hard time bringing myself to call this a "good" movie, it's definitely a very cute film that has a lot of heart behind it.

As his new baby brother is brought into the world, toddler Tommy (E.G. Daily) and his friends Chuckie (Christine Cavanaugh), Phil and Lil (both Kath Soucie) are not too happy with the addition. But after an accident sends them flying into the woods, they must put their other problems aside and find their way home.

I do have to say that there is a lot of stuff about this movie I don't like. It is an incredibly juvenile film, which is to be expected with the humor from the show. But I don't remember ever liking those jokes on the show either. While I like the idea of the kids having a hard time pronouncing words, it's constant and gets really annoying. Even the Smurfs and their incessant insertion of their own names in place of verbs and pronouns isn't quite as grading to listen to. There's plenty of talking about bodily functions and for that matter body parts that are sure to make the kids giggle but that's just never been my style of humor. There's always been another side to the humor that's a little more subtle that I've always appreciated, even when I was younger (I've, uh, never had many friends) and that's present here. There's also a few jokes that went completely over my head when I was little and most of them work for me now. There are a lot of really good laughs but there are also moments when I just sat there groaning at how much they were pandering to their demographic. And I guess that's fine but I'm nowhere near that demographic.

I have never liked Klasky-Csupo animation style. I've always found it to be just grotesque to look at. Even with a much bigger budget here, they weren't able to shake that, and there's a lot of little animation things that I really didn't like. Some of the character's movements are way over-animated, making it look very unnatural and being generally unnecessary. Speaking of unnecessary, this movie is a musical. Yeah, that wasn't necessary at all. And the songs are really awful too. There's a point about halfway through the movie where they stop writing their own (awful) songs and start doing renditions of established songs. I began to pine for the simpler days of them writing their own material. I can't even say this idea could have worked because the way the babies talk would have made it impossible to make the film a musical worth listening to.

Sploich Reviews Scary Movie (2000)

in Film Review

Scary Movie has to be the single greatest idea in the history of cinema. Let's take a movie that was a self-aware comedy and make a self-aware comedy referencing it! Genius! Yeah, I don't know what brought this film to fruition but it sort of hurts my "there are no bad ideas" philosophy.

The movie is a parody of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Matrix for some reason and a bunch of other movies from the year or two before it came out. Anna Faris plays Cindy Campbell, a teenager whose friends start getting killed off by the Ghost Face killer from Scream. It's basically the exact plot of Scream, beat for beat, with a few jokes thrown in here and there.

I do find it kind of funny that Faris' performance in this is actually more entertaining than Neve Campbell's (gah, I just got the reference in Faris' character's name) in the Scream series. She's the highlight of the film because her comedy is the most subtle, with her constant screaming at every little plot twist and how she runs like a complete idiot. She's the only strong comedian among a bunch of generally annoying people acting out a very lazy and mostly unfunny screenplay. It's bad enough that the movie feels like they took the script from Scream and just altered it a little bit, but they even go as far as to flat-out say that it's the same dialogue as in Scream at one point. It's a terrifying look into the future of the franchise, with two of the writers going off to do Date Movie and the ungodly Meet the Spartans (they even sold Date Movie as being "from two of the writers of Scary Movie").

Most of the humor is forced and extremely juvenile. One character's entire gag is that he just gets high throughout the whole movie and another's is that he may or may not be gay. Some of the jokes work well at first but by the fifth time they shove them in your face it just gets old. If you thought it was odd that I said Faris' part as being "the most subtle" of the film when I described it earlier, trust me, I was being serious. There's nobody in the movie that stands out to me as just being completely and utterly annoying like, say, Matthew Lillard was in Scream, but there's just this overall feeling that the movie was scrictly made for the fun of it. And I'm okay with that but I'm a film critic and I have to say that what they came up with is only fun for them.

There was an idea called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people so they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to fight the battles we never could.

Please visit leetNEET.com for this review as well as other awesome reviews/nerd-related news!

My rating system:

5 = Perfection.

4.5 = REALLY good, but lacking that oomph to make it 5.
4 = Great.
3.5 = Above average. Definitely worth a look.
3 = Average.
2.5 = Below average. If you like its genre, you probably would like it.
2 = Not terrible, but not something you would like.
1.5 = Bad, but still worth checking JUST to make fun of how bad it is.
1 = BEWARE! EVIL! NOT EVEN WORTH MAKING FUN OF! WILL LITERALLY MAKE YOU SICK!

for those who are interested, heres the ENTIRE PLOT for the avengers 2012 film. I still have my doubts on this film. im trying so hard to ignore the fangirls/fanboys point of view, because it's still considered a movie. I'd rather watch film brains review first from TGWTG, cus I've seen him review "The Raven " before it came out in the states. I'm watching clips of the film, and all I'm seeing, is the hype factor. no emotion of it being fun for me, whatsoever. even the medeocer reviews such as robcheskord from youtube, and his alternate reviews as batman youtube channels, that are nothing BUT fan hype and just using only descriptive words like "its awsome, funny, hot guys, hot girls, special effects amasing they are wut? lets dance" ......be honest with yourself. casual film watchers, or not, still add factors that our to your liking, not the fact of what the people want to here. anyways with out a further adue, The Plot:

Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., arrives at a remote research facility during an evacuation. The Tesseract, an energy source of unknown potential, has activated and opened a portal through space, from which the exiled Norse god Loki (Tom Hiddleston) steps through. Loki steals the Tesseract, and uses his abilities to control the minds of several S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel, including Agent Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), and the physicist Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), to aid in his getaway.

In response to the attack, Fury reactivates the Avengers Initiative. Agent Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) travels to India to find and recruit Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), while Agent Philip Coulson (Clark Gregg), visits Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and requests that he review Dr. Selvig's research on The Tesseract. Fury himself approaches Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) with an assignment to retrieve the Tesseract from Loki. During his exile, Loki met and allied with a warmongering alien race called the Chitauri. In exchange for the Tesseract, the Chitauri agree to help Loki subjugate Earth.

Iron Man, Captain America, and Agent Romanoff travel to Germany to apprehend Loki, who is stealing iridium needed to stabilize the Tesseract and demanding that the civilians kneel before him. After a battle with the heroes, Loki surrenders and is escorted to a S.H.I.E.L.D. plane. However, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki's adoptive brother and the Norse god of thunder, arrives and takes Loki from S.H.I.E.L.D., intending to reason with him on his own. Thor gets into a confrontation with Iron Man in a forest, and after Captain America breaks up the fight, Loki is eventually taken to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, a flying aircraft carrier, and placed in a cell designed to contain The Hulk.

The Avengers argue amongst themselves over how to deal with Loki, and Rogers discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. are planning to harness the Tesseract's power to develop weapons. Fury admits that the events in New Mexico a year before made S.H.I.E.L.D. aware of other extraterrestrial races that may threaten Earth. Weapons developed from the the Tesseract would form a means of deterrence. As the group argues, Hawkeye, along with Loki's other possessed agents, attack the Helicarrier and disable its engines. As Iron Man and Captain America attempt to restart the damaged engines, Dr. Banner transforms into The Hulk (voiced by Lou Ferrigno), despite Romanov's efforts to calm him down, and runs amok inside the ship, battling Thor. During a fight with Hawkeye, Romanoff discovers that knocking him unconscious breaks Loki's mind control. Meanwhile, Loki escapes, traps Thor in the cell that contained him, and ejects it from the ship, but Thor escapes as the cell falls and crashes into a field. Agent Coulson tries to fend off Loki with an experimental gun, but Loki stabs him in the chest, killing him.

Fury uses Agent Coulson's death to motivate the Avengers into working as a team. Stark and Rogers realise that defeating the team will not be enough for Loki; he needs to overpower them in a public way so as to validate himself as ruler of Earth. Using a Tesseract-powered device built by Dr Selvig, Loki opens a portal to the Chitauri fleet over Manhattan, summoning an invasion. The Avengers rally in defense of New York, but quickly conclude they will be overwhelmed as wave after wave of Chitauri soldiers descend. Captain America, Thor and Hawkeye evacuate civilians, while Iron Man battles with enormous, flying serpents covered in metal Armour, and Dr. Banner transforms into the Hulk again and goes after Loki, beating him into submission. Agent Romanoff makes her way to the portal device, where Dr. Selvig, freed of Loki's mind control, reveals that Loki's staff can be used to close the portal.

Meanwhile, Fury's superiors attempt to end the invasion by launching a nuclear missile at Manhattan. Iron Man intercepts the missile and takes it through the portal toward the Chitauri fleet, where it detonates. Iron Man's Armour runs out of power and he falls back through the portal, quickly plummeting to the ground, but The Hulk catches him and he survives. With the Earth saved, Thor escorts Loki and the Tesseract back to their home-world of Asgard, and the other Avengers go their separate ways. Fury notes that the Avengers will most likely band together again if and when the world needs them.

During the credits, the Chitauri leader approaches his master and tells him that humans are not the weak race that Loki promised, and attacking Earth again would be an act of suicide. A shadowy figure turns around and smiles menacingly.

END.   Well there you have it. thought the movie, it seems like they leave out alot occurring to the characters Bruce Banner/HULK, and seems like hes hardly in it. not saying he should or shouldn't, just from this writing retrospective, dosent seem like alot. sure I havent seen the movie yet, but I can gather from the scenes, I will not be interested at all or have a sence of "The Fun Factor". still if it's your feel of being sucked into the vast storage of and if I'm correct, it's being illegally downloaded as we speak, as movies always are when it comes to the interwebs. at the beginning of the story, its just what we've been seeing, nick furry gathering a team. I just hope that for when hes doing this, it's not showing scenes from the other movies, of when he's doing so. stalk footage in other words, or using the stalk footage, just shooting the scenes in different locations. smart movie, smart..... anyways, it also seems like it drags. on too much. we don't even get to see an epic fight scene till the end. I could be wrong, or maybe they wernt hoping to have a gigantic fight scene untill the next movie. yes, I'm talking about the end credits. I have no idea who this character is, but I'm assuming it's Mandarin, cus rumors have flown that the sequel to avengers, will be tied with, Iron Man 3, or its just gonna carry out to be either title avengers 2 or some creative name fallowed by the avengers, or simply titled Iron Man 3.

All-ah-wanna-say-issat, they don't really care about us! Aaaaaaah!

Well, well, well. We meet at last. I remember being so busy defending would be turd Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, I barely had time to defend Dragonball. I certainly didn't want to watch it. My Dragonball experience is roughly two weeks of Z, which taught me that the franchise takes it sweet time to make stuff happen. The movie has much less time to develop an arch, yet somehow manages to waste what time it has.

The film opens to narration, but you can skip it. It's repeated wholesale later. But if you must watch it, it says that once there was an alien bad guy named Piccolo, and he and his minion Ozaru pretty much had the earth by the balls. But then some mages did a suicide spell and cast him to the center of the earth. But he just escaped. I would have liked to see the escape.

This is not a review, its a first impression.

The Avengers is as good as it's going to get for an established franchise-superheroes-team movie.

Marvel and Joss Whedon did a great job in walking the thin line of unifying all established movie-continuity into this grand spectacle while at the same time providing everyone with their moments and (small) character-arcs.
Don't be fooled, this is not Nolan's The Dark Knight, its a summer blockbuster spectacle with your favorite Marvel characters.
Its a funny, action-packed, and fast-paced romp thats a pleasure to watch.

The movie is not without flaws of course, and some characters are obviously weaker than others, but this is as good as its going to get for a ~2,5 hour movie featuring 6 main characters with their own established movie-continuity.

There are two main flaws I really need to address here and spoilers might follow(!!!!)

The death of "Agent Phil" is played straight but seems comical and does not seem as a very good motivation for The Avengers to "avenge Earth".

If you frequent Muvico theaters you often see the "Movie Theater Etiquette/Promotion for the movie theater you already paid to get into" video right before the film.

In this vides there is a guy(?) that as soon as he shows up makes you want to say "Ugh! what the heck is that?" the person's name is Travis Oscarson.

this dude looks like a cross between Billy Joe from Green Day and a hermaphroditic insomniac vampire.  I'm sorry but that's what he looks like.

With a bit of research I found out that he was one of the Van Buren Boys from Sienfeld and has done a bunch of other minor things. But I don't really give a crap about all that. The thing is IMO I think Muvico needs to get someone else to do the vid because I just can't take this guy seriously when he looks like a reject employee from the record store.

I love the original Planet of the Apes movie, I do not love Tim Burton’s re-imagining of it. I’ll tell you why.

1. The original movie presented a lot of the ideas and themes in an intellectual and engaging way, one of my favourite scenes is the trial, it carries the tension while still showing the apes ignorance in their intelligence, all through dialogue. The Burton film vaguely pulls from these ideas but casts most of them aside for a more action oriented revolution movie (we are pretending the sequels to the original don’t exist).

2. I don’t think it is so hard to believe that apes can evolve in a natural way to be as intelligent as humans. So why does Burton need to fly an ape training space station into a time vortex nebula cloud thingy? It is unnecessary and makes the whole story even more convoluted than it ever had to be.

My Take On Watchmen: Comic & Film

A Canadian nerd, that spends too much time on the internet.

in Movies

My local comic shop is moving, so they are having a sale. Hard covers are 10% off and I decided it was time I purchased my own copy of Watchmen. So I picked it up and decided to look into it and the movie (I borrowed the Ultimate Cut from a friend). I am certain this will contain spoilers, so read at your own risk. Also this is not a recap, but reactions as I watch the movie. So if you haven't read the original or seen the movie, it won't make much sense :p

My Previous Experience With Them

When I was first into comics around the age of 15, I tried to read Watchmen. However it didn't speak to me at the time, and I realized I wasn't in the right place to read it. I didn't care about global matters, the questions of morality didn't really speak to me. So it simply wasn't for me at the time. So I didn't bother to continue past the 1st (maybe 2nd) chapter/issue.

When the movie came out in 2009, I had no interest in it. I cannot stand Zack Snyder as a director. To me he is the epitome of style over substance. He works with subjects that I love and am interested in (comics [300, Watchmen, Man Of Steel], things all in the mind [Sucker Punch], zombies [Dawn Of The Dead]) and fucks them all up in my opinion. I HATE, HATE HATE, HATE, HATE, the slow down and speed up stuff, it really does bother me, and I am well aware of how irrational that is. I did end up seeing it when it was released on DVD, since my housemates decided to watch it. They loved it, but I disagreed (just like Avatar and this group actually). I thought elements of it were great. I can't remember the details clearly, but I did enjoy small sections of the movie, or little touches here and there.

A Ghost Rider 2 Review

Grab some Twinkies and laugh you’re arse off.
--------------------------------

*Tunes of the Day: Metallica Enter the Sandman*

Guess what I did the other week? I saw Ghost Rider 2. Why? Because I had free tickets.

know that the first Ghost Rider the movie is pretty much despised by the nerd community... but as per usual, I actually... kinda...liked it.

WAIT, WAIT COME BACK!

I could go into the many reasons why I liked it, but it really comes down to how the first Ghost Rider was created in an era where comic movies hadn’t quite found their niche yet, so I'm a little more easy going with them. Plus, it’s Sony. We’ve all figured out by now that they mainly make the movies to make money, and sequels, to keep the money-making licences.

So here comes Ghost Rider 2, the movie that features the Rider pissing a stream of flames in it’s trailer. And once again, has Nicholas cage, who is even more “unique” then he was during the first movie.

So, when I happened upon 2 free tickets, I figured, what the hey? It’ll be stupid, will have nothing to do with the source material, Nicholas Cage would be flippin insane and everyone in the nerd community was going to hate in anyway.

And guess what? <_< >_> *leans forward and whispers*

It was awesome.

HEY! GET THAT CURSOR OFF THE BACK BUTTON!

Did it still have nothing to do with the comics? Yes. Was Nic Cage insane? Yes. Was it raunchy? Yes. What is stupid? Heck yes!

But it was also more fun then a monster truck rally! Including the part where he starts peeing flames. (Wow. I just said that. What is wrong with me?)

Ghost Rider 2 is one of those movies where you have to turn off your brain if you have any hope to enjoy. That means that you just need to just ... let it go. Just relax and admit what the movie really is. Is it there for the explosions? The camera work? Just focus on that, and you will be fine. Uh, usually. Forget the nerdom, forget the ignorance of the source material, forget all you’ve ever learned about writing and film school, forget what kind of movies you actually like. Treat it like an alternate universe, a What if, or a one shot. Comic movies rarely affect the actual comics, and if anything, it’ll increase the amount of people looking up Ghost Rider on Google.

Just sit back and enjoy the explosions and pure, unbridled Nic Cage insanity from the creators of Crank. We know it’s gonna suck, might as well enjoy it.

So, stating that, are the critics are being too hard on it? Pshahaha! Of course not! As an overall movie, Ghost rider 2 is not good. It might one day be considered “so bad it’s good”. But probably not until a better remake show up or the fires of hate have died down. (No, I will not excuse the pun)

(And for reference, this is different from Transformers 3, which was so bad, no amount of “turning off the brain” could have stopped it from being so mind-numbingly boring. And Avatar, which despite not have the most original characters or script, is actually really good and deserves most of the phrase it’s gettin’.)

Ghost Rider is dumb, but hilariously so. I knew it. And everyone in the theatre knew it too. We laughed at parts that were meant to be serious and scratched our heads at the scenes meant to be freaky. There was one scene in particular where something... really weird happens to Cage and when it was over, the entire theatre went dead silent, before one person loudly said, “What?”

The movie style changes almost every 5 minutes. Nic Cage has gone from being tortured to being psychotic in a silly way, the plot is obvious, the ghost rider himself is suddenly a flaming woody woodpecker, there’s one whole scene that is only there to make fun of the edibility of Twinkies and they take the phrase “takes over anything he rides” to extreme levels.

In fact, I’d say the only thing going against this movie’s monster-truck-rally tone, is when it tries to slip in some kinda of social-political commentary, which... was just eye-roll worthy. That, and it needed more heavy metal.

... What? Everything is better with Heavy Metal!

Should we demand a true Ghost Rider movie? Well, duh. I WANT a true Ghost Rider movie.

But until then, turn off you’re brain, gather some friends, some popcorn, and watch Ghost Rider 2 burn, with a beer in your hands, a twinkie in the other and your favourite heavy metal playing in the background. Who cares if its stupid? I just saw a mobster get killed by a giant, demonic construction vehicle on fire.

Yes, I do know about the incident with Gary Friedrich. You can check out my thoughts here

As for the boycotts, my official stance is that the movie and the incident with Gary Friedrich are two separate events. Should the creator of Ghost Rider get some rights to the movie? Yes. Should Marvel have gone after him like that? Fudge NO! But the people working on the films production, nor the many other creators working at Marvel, were not the cause of this mess. Marvel Comics (or at least the nameless suits at Marvel) were. If you want to boycott Marvel or the Ghost Rider movie because of it, that’s fine, but I should warn you that comic boycotts aren't that as effective as banding together like-minded individuals and getting the word out to those not in the know.

OH! And see the new thing at the top? Tunes of the Day? I pick a song that acts as a mood setter for the article or something to listen to while reading. I adore music, and I usually listen to it while drawing and writing for inspiration, so I'd thought I'd incorporate it here.

And, please please please don’t think that I am trying to insult heavy metal or Metallica by mentioning it in the same article as Ghost Rider 2. All I'm saying is that if I’m watching a film about a demonic flaming skeleton, riding a flaming motorbike, and killing people with flaming chains, explosions and even more flames, it needs to be accompanied with awesome heavy metal no matter what.

Nazis on the moon. Do I have you attention now? If I do, you're probably wondering what I'm talking about. I'm talking about Iron Sky.

Iron Sky is a Finnish film that going to be release this April that involves Space Nazis, Nazi on the moon. And I am personally excited. I am excited because I have seen the creators' previous work and me likey. Watch the trailer for Iron Sky and let me know what you think:

The creators of Iron Sky, the team of Samuli Torssonen and Timo Vuorensola, were responsible for the Star Wreck series. For those who don't what I'm talking about, Star Wreck is a Finnish Star Trek spoof series. It started 1992. Torssonen had heard about the new Star Trek film but was unable to see it because it took so long for American films to be released in Finland. So he created his own series. The first four films were animated, then they switch to live action.

The main character is named Captain Jame B. Pirk of the starship C.P.P. Kickstart.  The rest of the crew include Mr. Fukov, Mr. Spook , Mr. Dwarf (Wuf), Ensign Shitty and Mr. Info. Does that sound like a fun spoof/rip-off or what?

How to Write a Romance

Romances are very complex and often difficult to write. It's easy to write a romance, don't get me wrong. But writing a good romance? That can be near impossible, especially in these days when the majority's views on 'romance' differ so strongly from any previous ideals. In modern day, when Twilight is considered the epitome of romance to hordes of teenage girls who are soon to be women, I have to wonder how thatbecame the new ideal. I have made it quite clear in earlier works of mine that I detest Twilight. I don't use the word detest with any hyperbole; I honestly find myself sickened and concerned with my own age group when I think about the Twilight series. The 'romantic' element is the main reason for this.

Perhaps I'm too young to even give my viewpoint on this. I'm not even out of my teens yet, in fact. However, when I look at the way the media panders to my age group, it feels sometimes like I'm the only one who goes 'This is bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.'

Remember how I said in my last Twilight rant that I was finished with complaining about it? Yeah, I lied. I'm going to have to use it as an example of how not to write a romance because it's the greatest example I can get from modern literature that is both popular and that I have actually read. With that little addendum out of the way, I shall begin. I'm writing this in list form since a) it's easier, and b) I read Cracked articles far too much.

How Not to Write a Great Romance

1.) Your characters are unlikable or boring.

Well, duh. Your characters have to be likable (or at least relatable) for your audience to latch onto your work. Characters who do nothing or value, say nothing of value, or are nothing but self-centered pricks who walk around with blinders on are rarely liked. Sadly, in recent years that type of character seems to have taken off. I blame it on the Mary Sue complex. Story-telling is fascinating because of the way audiences react to works. We all long to see ourselves reflected in the images we see presented before us. We long for it so much that we excuse a work for having a character who is, essentially, nothing but a blank slate to press ourselves onto.

It seems that authors these days are afraid to give their romantic leads any kind of flaws, for fear that the intended audience of the work won't be able to connect to those characters. Here's my view - if a character doesn't have any flaws (at least intentional ones) then I feel a complete disconnect from them. I'm a flawed person. You're a flawed person. We've all got issues. Why do the heroines or heroes we're supposed to connect with have absolutely nothing we can relate to on a personal level? Why would we pay money for an overly long self-insert fanfic when we could always read one of those online for free?

I'm not just talking about the biggest self-insert fic of them all, Twilight. I'm talking about the movies that are made to pander to a certain kind of audience. See any Meg Ryan romantic comedy, excluding When Harry Met Sally, and try and figure out why she is the lead when she is the dullest part of the story in nearly every case. Sure, her frumpy and neurotic demeanor may be relatable to some women, but her personality is usually lacking any kind of flair. She's the self-insert fic to the middle-aged bracket whereas Twilight is the self-insert fic to teenage girls.

Since this section is getting to be long, I should probably wrap it up with an example of some positive romantic leads in books and/or movies. Read any Nick Hornby novel. Yes, any Nick Hornby novel, especially High Fidelity. His characters are deeply flawed and sometimes hard to sympathize with, but watching them develop as the story progresses is one of the best parts of reading his works. They'll never wind up as 'perfect' characters, but they don't need to be. They are themselves - fascinating, selfish, stubborn, mercurial, and always growing.

2.) The romance completely overrides any semblance of plot.

Also known as a Romantic Plot Tumor. Writing romance as the main plot of your story can often end in disaster. This is related to the point I made at the start. Anyone can write a romance, but very few can write a good romance. If the romance between your leads is all your story has going for it, then it's going to be a very dull story. Not to say a romance can't be interesting. It's just that more events need to happen to really make your story take shape. If all the story will do is show us all the various ways the leads love one another, or why they can't be together, or all the angst they have because they can't be together - well, that's going to get old very fast. Stuffing a 400+ novel with only that will be downright torturous. The same goes for movies. Unless there's a real action and conflict to push the story forward, then the entire work will be stuck in a rut.

Some examples of this include: Grease, wherein the 'will they, or won't they' romance was the only plot that made any sense and stayed consistent, so it has to be considered the main story-line; and Twilight, obviously. There's no point in elaborating by this point on what a snore-fest of romantic self-gratification those books and films are.

If the romance is going to be the main focus of your story, then try to spice it up a little. Have the romance be a chance to look deeply into the psychology of the characters. Have them question themselves and look into their pasts. Even if the current plot of the story is nothing but a romance, their recollections might be something thrilling and can add greatly to character development.

A good example of a romance-centered story is The Dreamers. Okay, okay. I know it's a French art film, but hear me out. The characters are not only complex and interesting, but the dialogue is quick and provokes thought, there is action interspersed with everyday life and romantic/sexual encounters, and it makes the audience question morality and society in general. Even if you're turned off by what the film shows you, you can't deny that it's hard to look away and even harder not to think about. The thought-provoking questions the main romance invokes in its audience is what makes this film so memorable.

3.) The 'will they, or won't they' element doesn't make sense.

So you have two characters who are truly, madly, deeply in love with one another. They would cross miles, sail seas, and fight armies to be with their one true love. Therefore, having an obstacle in their way would make perfect sense and make the story more interesting, right?

Well, in most cases, yes. Having two lovers torn from each other by the cruelties of circumstance makes for an interesting plot, most of the time. However, you have to make certain that the 'will they, or won't they' principle actually works within your story. Considering that every romantic comedy ever made ever has used this principle, it's become rather difficult to discern when it works and when it doesn't. From my point of view, this sort of conflict needs to be hinged on something of worth; animosity between characters should not be the main reason they are torn apart/are denying their feelings, a la You've Got Mail.

This sort of conflict should really come from a much more complex reason, such as race issues, religious differences, cultural differences, feuding families/nations, or some sort of supernatural/beyond their control barrier keeping them apart. Psychological reasons for keeping characters apart can also be fascinating, as it's an inward instead of outward struggle and adds more weight to the plot; you wouldn't only be rooting for the romance to work, you would be rooting for one or both characters to find a healthier way to live and overcome their issues.

Sometimes 'will they, or won't they' works if the question isn't 'Will they get together?', but instead 'Will they have a happy ending?' Think Aimee and Jaguar, which has elements of both, and is also a deeply moving story without needing the romance to add further heartache.

4.) The romance is tacked on at the last minute.

Ginny Weasley, much? Okay, okay! Don't kill me. Let's be honest here, the Ginny/Harry subplot came right the fuck out of nowhere, at least in the movies. Since I haven't actually read all the books (shame, shame) I can only go by what I saw on film. One moment, Harry is crushing on a gorgeous Chinese-Scottish babe (who wouldn't?), and then the next moment Ginny is in the picture and Harry is macking on her like the last love interest never existed. And I'm left sitting there going, "Wait, what? What did I miss? Is my DVD broken? Who broke my DVD?! WAS IT THE RUSSIANS?!"

This usually doesn't happen in works intended to be romances. In most cases, this happens in a broader story, but the romance is still supposed to be an important factor. Now, I do enjoy Harry Potter, at least the movies; but I was so taken aback by the sudden romance that I lost a little love for the movies then and there. I understand the longing to inject romance into a story. People like romance, unless they're cynical (or pretending to be cynical so they don't have to admit they cried at Titanic. Twice).

Still, throwing in a romance nugget when the rest of the story was finely developed seems a little...lazy. If a story has a romance, it should be as well-rounded as the rest of the plot, or close enough that it doesn't stand out, even if the romance doesn't get as much attention or time to develop. I understand it's hard juggling various plotlines when you have a large number of characters you need to focus on. But keep in mind - if it's your main character and his/her romance seems out of the blue, your audience will notice.

5.) You don't follow through, or tease the audience.

Sex and romance often go hand in hand, wouldn't you say? Of course, there are always exceptions. I would actually love to see a love story between two asexual people, but that's probably too much to ask for. My point is, sexual compatibility is an important part of love and relationships. If you're not sexually compatible with your partner, there will always be a rut in the relationship. The same goes for characters. If there's no chemistry between them, no longing for each other that's tension-building and even sensual, then watching their 'romance' play out will be downright boring.

That's not to say a story needs sex. If the characters are young, I would suggest very strongly that you keep sexual tension down to a minimum (I'm looking at you, James Patterson). But sex is a natural part of any love story and shouldn't be shied away from, unless for some moral fears you have. Or unless you want your book or movie to be 'more widely marketable.'

I've seen a story that really should have a meaningful sex scene between characters completely glance over it. Sometimes a book will build up the sexual tension so much that I'm dying for the moment when the characters finally give in and let their desires take over; then, for no reason I can think of, it fades to black. I was lied to. I was teased! All that time I was hoping for a good resolution to the sexual tension built between the love interests, and all I get is a lousy "next morning scene." If your story already has profanity, drug use, and other adult themes...then why shy away from sexuality? It's nothing but a cop-out on the part of the writer and can be infuriating in some cases.

On the other hand...

6.) Porn, porn, porn...where'd my plot go?

Romance is not all about sex. Trust me, I like a good roll in the hay as much as the next hot-blooded individual, but I like cuddling just as well. Affection is not always shown in big, physical gestures. Sometimes a simple act of holding your partner at the right moment can bring an overwhelming feeling of love to your heart or his/hers. Characters need small moments like this to ground them in reality and make them sympathetic. If all they do is sleep with everything that moves, they become far less relatable. Smut is fine, of course. I've written some myself. However, pure smut makes for a poor novel. Don't base everything around sex, unless you want to alienate a large portion of your audience.

7.) Love triangles: the plight of the disposable love interest.

Have you ever read a book or watched a movie where the lead character has a love interest whose only role in the story is to be a small hurdle for the lead character to prevent he or she from getting together with his or her real true love?

Did your mind just flash with about a hundred different examples of this? That's because the character of the disposable love interest is so common in media that it's become cliche. Normally, the disposable love interest is a nice enough person; flawed, yes, but no more so than the protagonist. However, they just aren't perfect enough for the protagonist, who has apparently been gifted with a very high set of standards. A common trend these days is for the disposable love interest to let the protagonist be with his/her 'true love' because they only want happiness for the protagonist. This happens a lot in romantic comedies, such as You've Got Mail (though that was resolved a tiny bit better, if not lazily), Sleepless in Seattle (two disposable love interests in that case), and Sweet Home Alabama (I have yet to grasp why she would choose the other guy).

Then there's the direct opposite of the above, wherein the disposable love interest is a complete dickbag whom you know is going to get the boot by the end so the hero can 'rescue' his/her love interest from the disposable love interest's horrible grasp. This tends to happen in more male-driven sex comedies, such as Wedding Crashers, Revenge of the Nerds (which I liked, by the way), and Old School. It's the 'knight in shining armor' idea. The protagonist is anything but knightly, but his competition is such a bastard that the protagonist looks chivalrous in comparison.

I love when movies go against this cliche or put a spin on it. Check out movies like Wet Hot American Summer, The Road to El Dorado, or The Princess Bride. They have their own interesting way of twisting the expected, in some cases going against social norms to do this. Don't be afraid to do something new with a love triangle. Yes, sometimes you are presented with more than one option when it comes to love, but that doesn't mean it has to be a struggle like it is in the movies. And hey, I approve of menage a trois. Wouldn't that be a fun way to end a romantic comedy?

8.) Characters are together. Now what?

So you've finally wrapped up your big romance plot-line. Your characters are together, smooching it up big time and planning a wedding/party/orgy/whatever. The question is: what now? Clearly, if your entire story has been focused only on their romance, then a good ending can be hard to come by. Sometimes romance novels or movies peter out in an anti-climactic way because the writer(s) have no idea how to finish up the last bits of the story. Loose ends in the plot are left hanging. Questions are never answered. Your main goal was completed, so why should you bother with the rest of the plot?

Well, because your audience will be annoyed if you think story-telling is over just because everybody's getting laid (or getting paired up, however you want to look at it). Big, romantic endings tend to work considerably better in film because it's such a visual medium; a film audience will be far less likely to go "Wait, that's it?" if a film ends with the two leads kissing and it fading to black than if a novel tried to do the same.

It can be difficult to come up with a great ending once you have those romantic loose ends tied up. The two most common forms of ending a romance novel I've seen are with an epilogue, showing where the characters are now and how the romance has developed, or with dialogue between the romantic leads (sometimes with more characters involved). Both these ways can work quite well and can even be a heartwarming note to end the story on. In fact, I prefer these methods over one that has become more painfully common: the self-centered inner monologue of the hero or heroine.

Usually these inner monologues will be something along the lines of "I finally know what I want", "I won at the end", or "he/she is mine." I find this highly irritating, as it makes the love interest of the story into nothing more than a prize to be won, instead of a character in their own right. It makes the romance seem unequal and selfish on the part of the character speaking. Which brings me to my next point...

9.) The romance is unequal/selfish.

As stated above, I hate when a love interest is seen as nothing more than a prize to be won. This is why unexpected romances tend to warm my heart a little more because it's less about one or the other person trying to 'win' the other, but about how you can't really help who you fall for. There are so many examples of love interests treated as objects that listing them all would add a thousand more words to this already lengthy document. I point my finger of shame at Twilight, especially; I'm still amazed at how utterly selfish and possessive both leads come off as, though maybe that means they really are 'meant for each other.'

If a character has to beg for love, then what the hell kind of romance is that? The answer is that it isn't romance at all, it's a childish obsession. It's possessiveness taken to such an extreme that it's scary to witness. When you're past the sociopath age of nine, this sort of behavior really isn't acceptable. A character should not, under any circumstances, feel that stalking, pressuring, barraging with phone calls, letters, chocolates, anything is a good idea. Forcing themselves onto another person is not romantic or spontaneous, it's sexual assault.

The love interest of your story must be developed, or it will come off as if he or she truly is nothing but a prize. The story might as well be about winning a race or a spelling bee if that's the case. A romance should be created for the chance to meld two interesting, creative minds together to see what comes from it. A love interest who does nothing but stand there and look pretty won't capture anyone's heart. Or they shouldn't, anyway.

Some good examples of balanced romance: When Harry Met Sally, Two Weeks Notice, Sideways, Brokeback Mountain, Once Upon a Marigold, and The Importance of Being Earnest (yes, the characters are all quite shallow, but they're all equally entertaining and share amazing chemistry).

10.) Tragedy: It was all for nothing?

I despise tacked-on characters deaths. You know when I really despise them? When it's at the end of a romance novel or romantic movie. You spent the entire story with these characters and might be rooting for their romance to work out, then you get to the end and one of them dies. And all you can think is, "Why did I watch this? What was the point?"

My personal view is that unless the novel is intended to be a tragedy, a la Aimee and Jaguar, Bent, or Wuthering Heights, then you shouldn't kill off the love interest. Stuffing the love interest in a fridge serves no purpose, if it's done at the end of the story. If your story is meant to be a prologue for a tale of revenge, well fine. But that's not really a romance, is it? That's a complete tease that should never be labeled as a romance.

Spending an entire novel reading about two characters overcoming the odds and finally get together feels pretty futile when you discover one of them has an incurable disease and doesn't have much longer to live. Is this supposed to show the fleeting nature of life? Because most romances aren't that deep. Nor should they try to tack on a deeper meaning when they clearly aren't that profound. I'm looking at you, City of Angels.

Basically, if you feel that a character death is necessary, make sure there's a damn good reason for it in your otherwise innocuous romance. Killing someone off purely to make people cry is, in my opinion, reprehensible from a literary standpoint - not to mention completely lacking in creativity. Why end your romance on a downer if the only point is to wrench tears from your audience? Every death should have a meaning, just as every character you give life should have meaning. Never, ever take your characters for granted by sacrificing them for nothing. They deserve much better.

---

I've gone on for far too long now. Perhaps I've angered some, or made others think hard about the nature of romantic stories. I hope for the most part I've done the latter, though I would be fine as long as I've done both. I made this list mostly for myself, as I'm trying to write a romance of my own. Will I succeed? I don't really know. However, maybe if I follow my own rules and remember the lessons I've learned from writers greater than myself, I can at least come up with something to be proud of.

Remember the line from "Nature Boy"? Say it with me now: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."

Sploich Predicts the 84th Academy Award Winners

in Movies

Hey there, Sploich here with my final Oscar predictions for the 84th Academy Awards. I got a 56% accuracy rating on my nomination predictions so I'm hoping to get even better with my winner predictions. The thing is, this year is a bit tricky. My head and my heart are telling me several different things based on the other award ceremonies this year (not including the Golden Globes because, as I've stated before, they mean nothing) as well as the way the Academy typically votes. I'm just going to tell you now that my predictions might be a little controversial. But what do I care? They're my predictions. If I'm wrong then I'm the only one to blame. BUT ENOUGH RAMBLING! ON WITH THE PREDICTIONS!

BEST SCORE
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

How can the silent film NOT win Best Score? There were some really great scores this year but when it comes to memorable...War Horse wins. But if memorable scores were the ones that won this award then the score from the first Pirates of the Caribbean would have been nominated. Like it should have been. But yeah, The Artist, hands down.

BEST SONG
What I Think Will Win: "Man or Muppet" from The Muppets
What I Want To Win: "Real in Rio" from Rio

This category is very strange this year. I literally have a 50/50 chance of getting it right (hey, there's a movie that got snubbed at the Oscars this year: 50/50). I figure they'll go with the Muppet's song because, well, it's the Muppets. That and it's written by that guy from that show on HBO or Showtime or whatever that I've never watched. I'd love to see "Real in Rio" win but I'm pretty confident the Muppets will take it, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

BEST SOUND
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: Hugo*

BEST SOUND EDITING
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: Hugo*

Hugo may not have struck me the way it struck other critics, but you'd find it difficult to find a soul who doesn't praise the film for its technicals. It even got some of the most cynical, dismissive critics to admit that the 3D was great (though admittedly, I didn't see it in 3D myself, yet). Both of these could go to War Horse, or maybe even The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I'm siding with the most marketable answer and saying Hugo takes both.

BEST FILM EDITING
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

Film Editing is always an interesting category. Well, not on the surface for most people I guess, but it's one that I personally am always interested in. It really could be any of the five nominees, but I'm saying The Descendants because it just seems like more the type of film the Academy would pick. You can have your fancy gimmicks like with Hugo and The Artist, and they work great for those movies, but I like to think the thing the film editors look for is subtlety, and The Descendants is graceful, to say the least.

BEST MAKEUP
What I Think Will Win: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
What I Want To Win: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2*

Did you ever realize that not a single Harry Potter film has ever won an Oscar? This is the last chance for them to give one to The Boy Who Lived and this is the perfect category to do it in. It's up against two movies that were not only not very strong with critics but movies that didn't do a whole lot with their makeup. HP, on the other hand, was tasked with creating a battlefield of sorcery, and the makeup works wonders for that goal.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

This one is really tough this time around because all five nominees have an equal shot at the Title. I might be taking a bit of a risk with this one because usually this category goes to a lesser known film like Jane Eyre or W.E. I can't imagine they would give a Roland Emmerich film an Oscar these days but they have done it before. And then there's Hugo, which could take it I guess. I dunno, I'm sticking with The Artist, for no reason other than that I just can't choose between the five.

BEST ART DIRECTION
What I Think Will Win: The Artist
What I Want To Win: The Artist*

Once again, the silent film is sort of the obvious winner just on the basis of it being a silent film. The art direction is what makes The Artist such a lovable film, and the Academy is more than likely going to award it for this.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
What I Think Will Win: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
What I Want To Win: Real Steel*

Alright, I'm being pretty bias here. You have no idea how excited I was to see Real Steel nominated in this category. I loved the hell out of that movie and totally didn't expect it to get such a lousy welcome. I know Rise is easily the most technologically advanced film in the group, with some of the most astonishing CG I have ever seen in a movie, but for my personal pick I've just got to go with the one I didn't expect to show up. Now if only my favorite movie of the year, Captain America: The First Avenger, had been nominated for anything...

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
What I Think Will Win: Hugo
What I Want To Win: The Artist

I really don't know about this one. War Horse has some beautiful cinematography, but Terrence Malick is one of those guys who could easily steal this one away. I think Hugo wins if only for that opening shot and the allegedly (again haven't seen the effect) masterful 3D work. I'd definitely like to see The Artist take it though, considering, again, that cinematography is sort of one of the major benefactors to a silent film.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

Easily the front-runner due to its sheerly masterful pacing, humor and grace. I'm sad to see The Ides of March only got nominated in this one category, but if it belongs anywhere at the Oscars this is where it belongs. Seeing as it is the only nomination for the movie, however, it probably doesn't have a chance. I'm honestly not even sure how Hugo got in here, but that could be my own feelings on the film poking through. Meanwhile I really did not like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but I totally understand what it's doing in this category. I just disagree. But none of that really matters because this is going to be a very easy win for The Descendants.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
What I Think Will Win: Midnight in Paris
What I Want To Win: Midnight in Paris*

I wonder if Woody Allen is going to show up this year. Anyway, this is probably the category with the most surprises, with only two of the nominees having even been on my radar for the category. It's nice to see A Separation on here as I've heard very good things about it and I'm looking forward to seeing it. But Margin Call? Really? I've heard nothing but BAD things about that movie. And then there's Bridesmaids. Ugh. If you're one of the handful of people who have been following my reviews then you know I do not like Bridesmaids. Nay, I loathe and despise it and refuse to even call it a film. Why people think this is funny, why they would think it's good writing, I will never know. Anyway, Midnight in Paris wins this one easy. I need to get off of this category before I burst a blood vessel.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
What I Think Will Win: Octavia Spencer for The Help
What I Want To Win: Bérénice Bejo for The Artist*

And I get right into another category featuring Bridesmaids. Joy. Actually I'm not at all upset with Melissa McCarthy being nominated. Well, okay a little bit, but I do really like her even if I couldn't stand her character in that movie. She's one of those actresses who should have gotten a bigger name for herself a long time ago but just didn't have the chance until now. This one is a hard race between Chastain, Bejo and Spencer, but I'm going with Octavia mainly because of her Globe win. I know that goes against everything I say about the Globes but honestly I just don't know what to think of the acting categories this year.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
What I Think Will Win: Christopher Plummer for Beginners
What I Want To Win: Nick Nolte for Warrior*

All I've been hearing for months is how easily Christopher Plummer is going to win this award, so I figure that's probably the best person to go with. I'm sure I'll regret it if Branagh takes it, but then I'll shrug it off since Branagh totally deserves it. I don't have a review up for Warrior for technical reasons (I will eventually) but Nick Nolte gave the performance of a lifetime in that movie and I'd love to see him win. But really? Jonah Hill? I mean, he was good, but Oscar-worthy? I don't know...

BEST ACTRESS
What I Think Will Win: Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn
What I Want To Win: Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn*

I have to admit that this is a somewhat bias opinion. I feel like I'm the only person who really just didn't see a lot of acting from Viola Davis in The Help. Don't get me wrong, she's a great actress who deserves plenty of Oscars, but for that movie specifically I just do not see it. She's barely in the movie enough to even call her a lead actress and when she is on screen she's just looking kind of mopey. Michelle Williams on the other hand was considered a casting catastrophe, but what she did with the role was magnificent. She embodied Marilyn Monroe in a way that is so unique and graceful that I really want to believe the Academy won't overlook her the way they did Frank Langella when he did the same in Frost/Nixon.

BEST ACTOR
What I Think Will Win: George Clooney for The Descendants
What I Want To Win: Jean Dujardin for The Artist*

Clooney really gave two of his best performances in 2011: One in front of the camera in The Descendants and one behind the camera making The Ides of March. And since this is the only one that he got nominated for, this is the one he's going to win for. Honestly, it could be any of the five nominees, but The Descendants is just the right movie in just the right year to win Clooney the Oscar for a second time. As for my pick though? It's tough but for now I'm going with Dujardin because I just really loved him in The Artist.

BEST DIRECTION
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: The Descendants

I really truly honestly and thoroughly can't stand that they would nominate Terrence Malick, one of the most pretentious, laziest, hacky-est directors working today, who isn't Lars von Trier or freaking Baz Luhrmann, for Best Director. But I digress. This year it's being considered a race between The Artist and The Descendants for the big awards, and I just think The Descendants is more the kind of film the Academy chooses. That's not to say either of them is better than the other. In fact, I gave both of them a 9/10 on my site. But The Descendants is a much more down-to-earth, less gimmicky film. Gimmick has never won a movie the big ones, and that's why The Descendants is the only movie in this category that makes sense for the win. But hey, what do I know? They might want to give it to Scorsese again, even though he only won six years ago.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
What I Think Will Win: Rango
What I Want To Win: Rango

Puss in Boots really got 5% of the vote? Really? Anyway, Rango gets it unless one of the lesser known films, A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita, make some sort of surprise win. They don't look like they will though, so I'm saying Rango takes it. And why shouldn't it? It's a beautifully artistic, hysterical western that treats kids like adults and allows adults to be kids again. And really, what more do you need than that?

BEST PICTURE
What I Think Will Win: The Descendants
What I Want To Win: Midnight in Paris

And thus we come to the grand finale, with my most controversial pick of all. As I stated before, I just don't see The Artist getting the win. Send-ups like that don't win. It's actually kind of funny that we have a silent film, making homage to the history of film, Hugo, making homage to the history of filmmaking and War Horse, which feels like it should have come out in the '90s, both nominated for Best Picture alongside Midnight in Paris which is about how much B.S. nostalgia is. The Descendants is the strongest film in the running that seems like something the Academy would give the big award to, and it deserves it. Really, about half of the movies on the list deserve it in my mind. If you see my reviews on my site, I gave the other half a meh-to-awful rating, and the only two I absolutely loved were Midnight in Paris and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The reason I choose Midnight in Paris as my personal hopeful is because it's a highly enjoyable film with a powerful message that everyone needs to receive, especially today. It's my second-favorite movie of 2011 and I'm just glad to see it nominated. But as for winning, it's between The Artist and The Descendants and I think The Descendants is just stronger among Academy voters.

Welp, that's all there is. I may make a post-Awards blog to express my feelings on the results and tell you how completely wrong my guesses probably were. Or maybe I'll be back to gloat. Oh how I wait for the day on which I can actually gloat about getting these predictions right. Curse me and my taking chances with my predictions. Oh well, it's fun all the same. If you'd like to see a full list of the nominees as well as a few predictions I didn't state on here, go to my site at Spoich.com. And while you're there, you can check out my reviews, watch me eat a cupcake (you'll understand when you see it) and follow me on Twitter @Sploich and @SploichCom and Facebook!

Now a lot of people aren't going to be familiar with this film choice. The Tokusatsu series Kamen Rider W (Double) had been a great success after the rather horrid Rider season that preceded it. It did so well in fact that the titular character appeared in a number of Rider films in cross over, as well as having their own films. However Toei decided to have two direct to DVD, or V Cinemas about the secondary Rider of the series Kamen Rider Accel and the villain of the movie Kamen Rider Eternal, but today's subject is just the first one:

Following on from my review of the first episode of Power Rangers RPM’s first episode review; seemed fitting to cover what at this point may well be the last appearance of the RPM rangers. Now before I start I have more than a few issues with this ‘film’, however my issues are personal but the issues are justifiable, even to me but I’ll get to those later.

Clash of the Red Rangers is a team up TV movie between the RPM Red Ranger (Ranger Operator Series Red in the shows terminology) and Power Rangers Samurai, only Series Red RPM ranger and the RPM ultrazord appear aside from some of Vendrix’s army, however aside from grinders the villain is a new character. The movie is a mash up of 2 Super Sentai movies; the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger movie, Shinkenger vs. Go-Onger and new American footage.

Carl the Critic: Compares "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (Swedish vs American)

Swedish

American

Introduction:

I'm not going to hold back any punches, I liked the Swedish film better! But if that's not good enough for you I decided to break down my thoughts and compare what you might care about in a film.

Closest to Original Story (and Better Story in General):

At first I thought the Swedish version would be closer to the book, because it is where the book came from, but after reading the book, it seems like the American version is actually closer. But does that make it better? No it just means it's closer (as far as I read). The real dividing factor is the ending. Both films have a great ending, but they are different (spoilers). Without wishing to spoil here, the Swedish ending is more of a high note, where the American version was more of a depressing, and sad ending (and yet close to the book). There is another element to the stories that is actually closer in the Swedish film than the American film (but again without wishing to spoil it here).

If you want a film closer to the actual story, than I recommend the American film, but I actually liked the Swedish version better. The Swedish version was more suspenseful, and focused on the main characters, eliminating any characters that seemed pointless like Mikael's daughter. It focused on Lisbeth being more resourceful and how her abusive childhood affected her life. The American version uses the characters from the book, but they don't feel necessary or that they add to the film.

One Point for the Swedish film.

X-Men First Class: Awful or Terrible?

in Misc Reviews

I hate when I see something and no one else does. I look up while reading a book in my local books a million and bam, a clown holding balloons signaling for me to come over and die...

But what is worse is when I see something that is very much real and no one else sees it the same way. And for that reason I'm the only guy who sees how bad X-men First Class is!

Seriously this is the second worst movie I saw all year! It is only second to Transformers Dark of the Moon. "But Zombi it was the very thing that the X-men series needed! It made the X-men cool again." ok I hear you. I think your wrong but I understand why you say that. It wasn't the absolute worst X-men movie. X-men Origins: Wolverine.

But let's make a bulleted list and go through these points why this is such a terrible movie.

  • ·         These aren't the first X-men class.
  • ·         Who are these people?
  • ·         There is no continuity!
  • ·         The makeup effects were the worst of the year.
  • ·         My Nazi senses are tingling.
  • ·         Bacon the worst Nazi ever!
  • ·         Beast the worlds’ dumbest genius!

This isn't the first X-men class. The original class consisted of Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel and Jean Grey (Marvel Girl) and Professor X. In this movie we get such characters as Darwin, a wasted talent who died before getting to do anything because he was a better actor than the rest of the cast. Havok, Cyclops’s YOUNGER brother. Angel, the stripper with bug wings, whom they could have called pixie and her name would have made more sense. Beast, who is in love with mystique and hates his "freak" body which allows him to be the greatest athlete in the world. Oh can’t forget it's only "flaw" is monkey feet. Not even a tail...I would kill for money feet and tail! Mystique who is now Prof. X's "adopted sister and has body issues. The character who can become anyone/anything has body issues. And Banshee who is supposed to be Irish and is just a whiney teen who has no real personality. And that is one of the biggest problems. No one has personality in the X-men. Havok is a jockey douche. Beast is a pouty nerd. Mystique is the cheerleader who throws up because she hates her look. These are High school stereotypes! These characters get no real change in the way they think or act. They "grow closer" in a montage but none of them get real personalities.

I can name 2 villains on the brotherhood side. Sebastian Shaw played by Kevin Bacon and Azazel. I have no idea anything about Azazel other than he is Russian and evidentially Nightcrawler’s father. And really I only guessed that because of the tail and being a primary color. I can't tell you any of the other antagonist’s names from this film. Do you remember the guy who made tornados? Do you remember him adding anything to the plot other than being there? Oh wait Emma Frost was there. But she was supposed to be locked up in a mutant prison thing. Ok doing a bit of research has shown that the movie takes place in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Wolverine is fighting in the Vietnam War in the opening credits to his movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And taking all that in mind Emma shouldn't even be there she should be somewhere in elementary to middle school!

And that just brings up more questions. There is no continuity in these films. They have a set time line from 4 movies and none of it makes sense. Charles can walk in Wolverine but he loses his ability to walk in the end of this one! Magneto and Prof. X met Wolverine and neither of them remember it at all! How does Moira MacTaggert know Charles in the 3rd movie if he erases her memory at the end of this one? Why does he erase her memory? Why does Magneto explain what the helmet is for in the first movie when Sebastian made the helmet and Charles already knew? But that movie came first they couldn't have...Yes they could have! They have previously set up this continuity! They can bend and work so it fits!

The makeup effects where the absolute worst I had seen all year! Beast looks like a freak reject from cats! Kelsey Grammer as beast looked sensational not to mention being perfectly cast. Mystique looked awful! We have 3 full movies of Rebecca Romijn proving that the Mystique makeup can not only be good but fucking amazing! Before I could find porn I could fap to Rebecca Romijn in X-men, easy! Yet this movie just makes Beast and Mystique look awful! Why has no one mentioned these flaws in any review I have seen?

How does Magneto find all these Nazis? Ok I got torture works but there is no way all these Nazis just know where each other are. That would be the stupidest plan ever. Disband the 3rd Reich but let's make sure we stay in contact so we can have a reunion.

Do I have to say more?

When watching this I had the highest of hopes. I had heard nothing but good things about this movie! I heard great things about Kevin Bacon being the villain and that was astounding. And for the first few minutes I agreed. Then we got a look at the other side of his office. Why would a Nazi bring a super powered Jew into his concentration camp office offer him candy and then threaten him, then kill his mother in front of him with a room full of metal death right next door? Why did Magneto not just stab him with his super metal powers? Why does it all play out like this? Why not kill the Nazis with your super magnet powers? Kill the guy who just shot your mother! In front of you! He's right there!

Why does Breast freak out about his mutant power? His only physical flaw if you can call it that is he has hand feet. He bitches and moans about not being normal. He was living basically a normal life until Charles outted him. He can hide his power by wearing fucking SHOES! Socks even! Unless you're wearing sandals no one will ever know! No one has pretty feet! They are fucking feet! Put shoes on and walk over your river of tears!

And these are the reasons I hate this movie so much! Why does no one else notice this crap?! People are putting this movie on their best of 2011 lists? Why?! It's just so bad!

Weird dream. Lived in a giant fantasy city, the roads elevated high above canals
User is currently offline

in Film Review

I have just finished watching what may be the worst film I have ever seen. And that really is saying something. I’ve seen ‘The Room’, ‘Troll 2’, ‘Birdemic’, ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ and ‘Battlefield Earth’ but at least they had some redeeming features. They were all, in some way enjoyable. They fall into the category of film that can be described as being so bad that they are good. It is fun to watch them just because they are so bowel-shatteringly awful and the important thing to remember is that each film takes themselves completely and utterly seriously. Cheerleader Autopsy doesn’t fall into this category. It falls into the so bad, it’s bad category and one of the reasons for this is because it’s intentionally trying to be funny and as far as horror comedies go, it makes yesterday’s entry, ‘Horny House of Horror’ look like Shaun of the Dead.

So what makes Cheerleader Autopsy so painfully unfunny? Is it the crude, incredibly lowbrow humour that includes a close up of someone hacking of their own penis (is every film I review this week going to involve some form of genital mutilation?), pressing down just above a dead girls corpse to make a jet of water shoot from her vagina and a hillbilly mistakenly shooting himself in the head when he thinks there is something wrong with his gun? No, I generally consider myself to be quite immature but these jokes just weren’t hitting home. I think what it may have been was the constant stream of immature and gross out humour. I think back to the films that I love which have quite a high level of what could be considered juvenile humour, such as the films of Kevin Smith, and the reason I’ve enjoyed them is because whilst they do have that level of immaturity, they are well written and always have something else going on in them as well, something substantial that raises the level of the film as a whole. Cheerleader Autopsy is poorly written, cramming as many stupid jokes in as it can within it’s short (but seemingly excruciatingly long) 73 minute run time and it has nothing of substance to fall back on.

So what is the plot of Cheerleader Autopsy? Well, that’s kind of like asking what is the meaning of life. There could be many interpretations but the question itself is practically unanswerable. There’s a cheerleader team called the Stinkwater Beavers (oh, the hilarity!), they get killed, there is a mental mortician who also happens to be the sheriff of the town and his nephew who works as his assistant. The mortician has another assistant who’s a bit socially retarded because he has a small penis (he’s the guy who chops off his own in order to attach a larger member from a body that’s brought in) and now that I think about it, I think there’s only one actual autopsy… although I suppose the film isn‘t called Cheerleader Autopsies so far enough. Oh and there’s jokes and hints about necrophilia and eating the brains of foetuses littered throughout. Now that I think about it, maybe it is the crude humour that makes this suck. I mean, eating the brains of foetuses? I’m a man who regularly makes jokes about paedophilia and even I think that’s going a bit too far.

Of course, the humour can’t be completely held responsible here. There’s also the terrible acting, terrible editing, terrible sound, terrible camera work, terrible picture quality and terrible everything. If you’ve seen Birdemic, imagine all of these things being a fraction better than that and yet Birdemic still remains the far more enjoyable film. Look, I’m really sick of thinking about this film and I’ve got a pub quiz to get ready for. Time to get completely drunk. To sum up just imagine you had a really stupid friend with a camcorder and a worrying level of access to a number of Real Dolls. The result would be something like this film. To further sum up, just watch the damn trailer. 0 pints out of five. Laterz.

Halloween and Horror Movies: Cube (and The Game)

Cube is largely considered the precursor to the Saw films. It's about a group of people who wake up in a cube shaped room with tunnels in all directions that lead to other cube shaped rooms with no idea how they got there. As it turns out some of the cube rooms have traps like acid, spike and razor wire, that are triggered by different things, like sound, motion, heat ect. But everyone wonders why they're there, what the cube are for, and why them? Well that's the million dollar question. As it is revealed kind of blatently later in the film, almost in an anime epiphony kind of way, the meaning for the cube is a kind of clever political message. The characters are not overly interesting but at least they're not boring, and the way it progresses with all the characters dealing with the situation the way they do, its a surprise, and a bit of a jar of character, to see which character eventually completely loses their shit.

Cube is one of those enjoyable thrillers with a very clever concept. Other films that fall in a similar mood and concept are The Game by David Fincher and to an extreme case Clockwork orange. The Game is about a CEO (Micheal Douglass) who signs up for 'a game' by a corporation recommended to him by his brother (Sean Penn) only afterward to find everything in his life has gone to hell and he runs into several situations where people seem to be trying to kill him. It's a great creepy concept, however after the regular rhythm of twists in the story, near the end it get to where things don't shock you anymore.

I'm lucky to live in a area that has a strong appreciation for classic film. I know of two theatres around  within a 1/2 hour drive that feature classic movies once a week. Tonight I watched Alfred Hitchcock's the Birds for the first time. Getting to see it on the big screen was a very cool experience.

Don't let this trailer fool you, this movie is more funny than scary.

I have to preface this by saying I found this movie to be silly as Hell. Perhaps because I'm not afraid of birds. Birds are one of the few things I'm not afraid of. Birds are a unique challenge even for a director as good as Hitchcock indeed was, this could have easily been a catastrophe of Birdemic proportion.

I find it hard to believe this movie was ever considered scary to anyone who wasn't a true Ornithophobic (one who has an irrational fear of birds). And there were several moments in the movie where the entire theatre was laughing. The story follows Melanie Daniels, a rich daddy's girl with a wild streak. She follows a hunky lawyer to the coastal town of Bodega Bay where she, and the rest of the towns people, become trapped by a bizarre swarming of murderous birds.

The Birds is a Hitchcock film through and through. It's got great direction and is wonderfully shot. But it is, as I said, silly as Hell. Despite the different antagonist, this movie plays out like a zombie movie.

The Reasons Why I Haven't Reviewed A Gundam Title

New Blog Entry: The Hentai Creep: A Rather Disturbing Trend In Today's Anime ht

I'm writing this article guessing that you're wondering " It's been almost forty episodes in, and still he hasn't reviewed a Gundam Title." Well, here is why. First, is that the Gundam Series is a huge series with over fourteen TV shows and countless movies. It is intimidating just picking out which one of the Gundam shows that would be the best one for a review. Then there is the snowball effect. Just picking one Gundam title to review will have other people wanting me to review their favorite Gundam title and quite frankly, watching and reviewing all of them is a phenomenal task. Then there is the time it takes to watch and review a Gundam title since each of them usually consist of two seasons, each containing about 24+ episodes each which would possibly be stressful on my schedule. Since I release a new review about every couple of weeks, I would find trouble in watching shows that consist of more than thirty or so episodes. For instance, For me to review Gundam Seed would require twenty-two hours for me to watch in less than a week in order to fit the time needed to write the script, record the audio, select clips of the show I want to use in the review, film the necessary footage needed and edit them all together, which takes about another week to do. And that doesn't include other daily things I need to do! Last and not least, I just haven't gotten around to watching a Gundam title yet and if I decide to review a Gundam title would take a good deal of planning in oreder to give the review some justice. There is one Gundam title I am thinking of reviewing, but it's not a title that you would expect. If you want to know what it is, you'll just have to wait until the premiere of Season 3 to find out!

Transformer 1 was ok, Transformers 2 was the worst cinematic abortion I had seen in years, then we came to this point.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Transformers 3 in 5 seconds!

This is all I heard in this movie! So yeah easy to say I hate this movie.

It's SUPER SEPTEMBER MONTH at SlugLady's Sketch-log. All month I'll be discussing comics, TV, movies etc that all have to do with out favorite super heroes! (Yes, other then Wonder Woman ;) ) First up:

Ways to help Wonder Woman: DC edition
My Lasso. Now.

So, after my last WW rant about the Wondy’s pants debate, and all the great feedback I got, I figure I should continue it with something... a little less ranty.

Now, I talk a lot about ways that WW keeps getting screwed around or how awesome she actually is. But I haven’t really talked much about ways to keep her from being screwed around or show how awesome she is.

And I also don’t want you guys to get the impression that I think DC always screws up Wonder Woman, or that she gets screwed over more then any other hero. There has been some great Wondy stories. The All New Wonder Woman, for the most part, was really good. Her time during the Blackest Night event was great and had a lot of respect for the character, Brave and the Bold is friggin awesome and Gail Simone dug Wondy out of one of a...a... I can’t think of a nerdy metaphor for “deep hole”. If anything, Hal Jordan has been put through a lot worse (See- Parallax)

But even now, DC is still making the same mistakes with her. Maybe because her books continue to not have good sales (last time I checked) And now that the reboot is here, to say I'm worried is... an understatement (Why does she get only one comic and Batman show up in like, 5 during the first month?!)

So here are a few ideas on how DC can help give the Amazon Princess a hand. Later on, there will be a fans edition! And a little disclaimer: Most of this information is based mostly on my own experience--- what I see in the bad comics and the good, and partly on my research of the character. And it can be applied to most of the super heroes out there.

List after the jump!

Ways DC can help Wonder Woman:

1 Treat the third of your trinity like the third of your trinity:

Okay, DC has a trinity of super heroes: Their big three that balance out the symbolism for “Peace, justice and truth”. That trinity consists of Superman, Batman,... and Wonder Woman.

And yet, you wouldn’t think that about her these days, would you? DC says Wonder Woman was a part of this so called Trinity, instantly putting on a pedestal beside Batman and Superman. But in terms of proving it, Wonder Woman is obviously put on a MUCH shorter pedestal then the boys.

Which is weird because when you actually read her books, you discover that not only is she one of the most important figures of the DC universe, but is respected highly by both her allies and enemies, a complex, a compelling character and very easy to look up to.

If so, then why was WW kicked out of the brightest day? Why was Amazon’s Attack so badly written? Why was Gail Simone’s run on Wonder Woman never advertised as much as it should have? (She. Killed. A. GOD. Last time I checked--- kinda a big deal).

DC, if Wonder Woman really IS part of the DC trinity, treat her as such. Treat her with the respect that her cast does. If you decide not to, then change the trinity. This is embarrassing.

2 Stop being ashamed of Wonder Woman and her past and stop trying to make her “cool”

And speaking of respect...

Wonder Woman has a very odd history. She was created by William Moulton Marston, the inventor of the lie detector. He was also, a polygamist who thought women would one day be the dominate sex, saw comics as an art form and had a big love of bondage. Also, this was the 40s. Ya. You can imagine the non-comic public probably didn’t like him back then. In fact, after his run was done and the torched was passed over, the constant retellings and editing of Wondy's character began. Some good-- great even. We got alot of cool origins built upon what was already there for her outfit, and weapons. And then... some not so good. At one point, she lost her powers and became a hippy martial artist. She became more of a frail woman, who needed a man to save her and... her stories got weird (Look up Donna Troy's multiple origins to see what I mean) And then two magical men call “George Pérez” and “Len Wein” came and fixed it all.

But DC won’t stop messing with her. The 90s is proof enough of that. Partly because there are things about golden age super heroes that are just plan silly (Bat-shark repellent anyone?). And because DC seems to think that Wonder Woman is too weird and just isn’t “cool” enough. The invisible jet, for instance, despite being iconic, is treated like a black mark on Wonder Woman’s record, and is erased from the story lines whenever possible. If they bring it back, it’s because she gets it in some last minute side story, like, “she steals the plane from an enemy” or something like that.

But whenever DC adds more stuff to make Wonder Woman cool, they end up making her a more confusing and unwanted character. The failed TV series did this in spades. All these new things were added onto Wonder woman until the she just looked like a phony wearing the costume.

But here's the thing: All that weird stuff is also why I like wonder woman. THAT is what makes her cool.

Okay, not the bondage. That’s going too far. (I’ll get to that, keep reading)

But the odd gadgets, the strange bizarre characters, and mythical tales were awesome. She’s gifted by the Greek gods, she was made from sand, she has a lasso that forces you to tell the truth, she has friends and enemies from mythical stories, a gorilla turned human villain, a mirror that could show your past present and future, and during the golden Age, Wonder Woman had not just ONE sidekick, but a whole Army. Of Cheerleaders.

Cheer. Leaders.

How friggin hilarious is that?! Wonder Woman worked with a sorority group called the Holiday Girls, who helped her on several missions. And you know what? It worked! They even infiltrated and stops an army of Nazis together!. And the leader of the Holiday Girls, was a short, pudgy candy-holic called Etta Candy (Who is also the person behind "WOO WOO!", if you're wondering why i keep shouting that in every WW article). Candy was brought back eventually, but no more Holiday Girls...

Another important thing to remember is that when you’re dealing with Wonder Woman, you’re dealing with magic, myths, and oddly enough futuristic technology. Hmm, who does that sound like?

From the Marvel Wiki

Right. And the invisible jet makes about as much sense as Thor being an alien when you ACTUALLY EXPLAIN IT. And people will stop laughing at these “silly” things, if you focus on making them look cool and not invent something brand new, out of the blue.

And if the Green Lanterns can have a talking alien squirrel as a member, I think you can let Wonder Woman have her time travelling mirror.

3 Enough with the bondage already

This goes for ALL super heroines.

And here is where I sound like a hypocrite. Yes, respect the history. But, uh...

I can’t say who was more at fault here: Marston drew the bondage, but from my research, he did it as a metaphor for woman relinquishing themselves from the chains of society... Or the publishers, who wanted bondage to attract male readers and put sexism into every comic featuring a female star (Like I said: the 40s)

But we have come a long way since... the 90s. Society has changed and we don’t need bondage to represent “chains of society” when we can see more literal representations these days. And a little fan service is okay now and again. A lot of the jokes that reference the bondage history are actually really funny. Like this one:

From Weekly Crisis. Also: BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

This is red rocket, unknowingly making a joke about Wondy’s costume

But it’s when you put the original in this kind of outfit that you’ve crossed the line (I’m looking at you, Miller). Artists will make her costume skimpy (... fine---skimpy-er.), make her boobs as big as her head, increase the T&A shots, etc.

Guys...If we want porn, we have the internet.

4 Treat her like a person. Not an icon.

This is something that keeps popping up. There is a theory that Wonder Woman is hard to write for. Maybe because no one can decide what wonder woman stand for, or what kind of person she is. Sure, she’s a symbol of truth, love, justice, and women’s rights. She a diplomat from an all female society. She’s also a warrior, who knows her way around a sword. Y’know what else she is?

person.

Corny, I know. But before she was a diplomat, a hero, a symbol, Wonder Woman was just Diana. Superman and Batman and all those other heroes wouldn't be as likeable or relatable as they are without their quirks or individual characteristics. We know Superman is an “all american hero” but that his parents would line his presents in lead during christmas. We know Batman hates crime. But even if he won’t use it lethally, he won’t hold a gun under any circumstances.

What some writers seem to forget is that even though Wondy stands for truth and equal rights among the sexes, that isn’t what she’s all about. And frankly, no one likes a preach.

Some of my favourite stories are where Diana is interacting with people from different cultures, like one of her team mates. Wonder Woman was isolated her entire life, on an island where every one treated her like a daughter. Then she deals when our world which is filled with so many different cultures that don’t always get along, we get to see some her own little personality quirks as she tries to adjust. She doesn’t always get all the jokes about her costume or cultural fopaux. She’s an honourable warrior who does kill but ONLY as a last resort (this includes Medusa as well as Maxwell Lord). She speaks her mind without thinking of the consequences. And she’s in love. Speaking of which...

5 Let her be a woman too.

Just to beat a dead horse: Yes. She stands for equal rights. Rights for woman doesn’t mean “man hater”. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. She’s allowed to fall in love and date and be an activist. Choosing the man she loves over keeping her powers doesn’t make her a feminine stereotype. It makes her normal. Wonder Woman has had a few loves in her life: Steve Trevor, Nemesis, Batman, heck, even Aquaman. And there have been lots of stories that showed a real relationship. And the only time I've seen them go wrong is when the writer actually thinks that dating means you aren't cool anymore, or turns Wonder Woman into a really needy girlfriend:

That's right. That just happened. Also, here is the link.

(Or when fans think that. I’ll get to that later)

There is NOTHING wrong with letting Wonder Woman get the guy. She’ll still be kicking butt. Heck, even if she gets married, she’ll still kick butt from here to Thanagar.

Now make her iconic. To girls AND boys.

Okay, now that the personality is out of the way, NOW apply the symbols. Activism, truth, love, etc. This part is easily as long as you DON’T MAKE HER PREACHY. No one likes preachy.

But the key is to make her iconic to not just girls but boys as well. Wonder Woman started out as a role model for girls but boys were drawn to the comics for the... er....aforementioned bondage scenes.

But these days, Wonder Woman has a lot of male fans that aren’t there for the fan service. And DC has acknowledged them.

But what about the non-fans? I find it's actually really hard to convince anyone that wonder woman is actually really cool. Maybe because so much about her: the skimpy costume, the american colours, the lasso, the fact that she would rather use her smarts instead of her muscle to solve a problem is chalked up to being silly and un-intimidating.

Ahem.

FYI, she's was blind when she did that

See more bad-A images if Wondy here

Wonder woman is friggin intimidating. She’s arguably as strong as anyone in the justice league and just as intelligent. In fact, in League of One, she took down the entire Justice league! She has wielded many different types of weapons, both traditional and futuristic. She has mythological epics!

ADVERTISE IT.

7 Wonder Woman Movie. Now.

Wonder Woman needs a movie. Even if it’s not the greatest movie ever. Because this is what happens: Even when DC makes a bad movie that out rages fans, the character still gets a lot of coverage, new fans are introduced to the character, tons of comics, animations, merch, etc, surrounding the character are put out, and they even get a few events dedicated to them. Even though the Green Lantern was a terrible movie (Apparently. Haven’t seen it yet), we still got some great coverage and comics out of it. And once again, Wonder Woman is part of the Trilogy. On principal alone, she should have a movie already. The reasons seam to be finding a good actress that meets the height requirements, a good writer, and a good director. And it’s said that magic is really hard to write for. Now, the first three are good reasons...but...

DC... I saw the Thor movie.

I’m waiting.

Hello, I am The_Awesometeer and I will be partaking on a journey through the AFI Top 100 (if you do not know what this is please check out this site: AFI Top 100).  Now I am a semi-busy person so I will differ on how many movies I will watch and review a week.  It should always be at least one but I might be able to sometimes fit in two.  As of right now I am hoping to do video blogs but we will see how that works out (if you follow my blog or twitter you will know when new reviews are about to come out).

Now for some background about me and movies.  I like movies but I do not like old movies (i don't really have a good reason why) with that said I have seen only a handful of older movies (made before the 70s) in my life, needless to say I do not have much reason to hate old movies.  Now I do like movies and for the past 8 years I have made sure to watch every movie nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.  Another thing you should know is though I enjoy movies I am no critic in fact I know hardly anything about movies.  I pretty much know if I liked it or not, so do not expect a review from a movie snob.

Lastly lets talk about this blog.  First-off like I mentioned I will be watching and reviewing the AFI Top 100 but I will not be doing it in any particular order (I just used a random number generator).  I will be using my own secret formula (like Coke-a-Cola) to critique the film.  I will then make a post about it giving it a final grade.  As I start doing this I will then order the movies I reviewed by the grade I give them, eventually ending up with my own version of the Top 100.  So please join me on this adventure and lets look at some classic American movies.

The Review Garden: The Dreaded TF3 review...

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, my Transformers 3 review.

Heads up: There are spoilers, F-bombs...And I think I started channeling the Spoony One.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

So. I saw TF3. Wasn’t planning to. But I did.

Now, I did end up spoiling myself about the plot. And I knew I was going to hate it, going in. Heck, YOU knew I was going in knowing I’d hate it.

But... I really wanted to like this. I was even trying to fool myself into thinking this was okay. Why? Because my brother loves it. And frankly, I seem to be building a rep with him that I hate EVERYTHING.

Now, if you like it, that's fine. This movie isn't’ one of those movies that is so bad that everyone should hate it. Doesn’t make you a bad person if you enjoyed it.

I, on the other hand...

I tried to forget the bad and focus on the few good scenes I actually liked. I really, really, did. I wanted to sit back and at least enjoy the explosions. I mean, that's what we’re all there for, right?

So my question, to you, Michael Bay, is...

HOW THE F**** DO YOU SCREW THIS UP?!

I have never felt so utterly bored while watching things blow up! The boom-booms started. People and robots were flying all over the place, changing back and forth! Things going so fast you can barely see what’s what--- and I did not care at all. It was exactly the same as the last two movies. In fact, a few of the scenes were actually cut right from ANOTHER COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BAY FILM from 6 years ago! How lazy can you get, Bay!? And yes, that is laziness. Not an homage. Not a throw back. But probably stupidity. The man has reached Shyamalan type badness and is slowly becoming an explosion obsessed Uwe Boll

And did we really need the new agent in charge to have a prissy attitude and a hundred purses? Did Sam really need to suddenly get all self important even though last movie, he said he didn’t want to be part of this war any more? And why ISN’T anyone letting him work with the Autobots? Because he just got out of college? Are you F***ing kidding me?! And why must Carly be sexualized in every shot? First shot we see of her: Her pantied butt. No. Really. We get like 15 seconds of her butt and legs. Almost a minute before we see her face. Did we really need those pointless still shots of people who are obviously not the president mixed up with actual footage of the president? It just looked... dumb. Really. Really dumb. Did you need to drag Chernobyl into this? Why are so many Deception scenes have a sexualized edge? Is is normal for Deceptions to caress the faces of there victims before killing? Why did Sentinel refused the matrix of leadership when Optimus offered up on a silver plater, proclaim Optimus the true leader of the Autobots and five minutes later, betrays everyone, and makes himself leader? And no, I do not care how many job interview Sam fails. I don’t care what an uppity asshole his boss is. Or about him being tickled by bumblebee--- GET BACK TO THE SLAGGING PLOT!!

And, I know Bay certainly has a deep and kinda disturbing love of the military, but he sure hates the rest of the government! Why else who any human who isn’t out two main military characters be total assholes. Oh, I’m sorry, you can’t go save the world because you have to do sooooo much paper work first? Too f***ing BAD! Pick up that gun and go shoot a Decepticon you prada wearing BITCH!

I just saw independents day again. And you know what? THAT is a good f***ing film! Why? Because when the earth was being attacked, the first thing everyone did was fight back! Not calculate how much the damages would cost! And people actually tried to do something! The humans actually joined in with the fitting! Heck, the president was involved! Cause, you’d think the president would be involved with saving the world from destruction, right?

And I swear, if I hear one more character in that movie start talking in thick street slang, or stereotypical “black slang”--- Oh, That’s right! You thought the last one was racist? Just about every character talks like a “gangster” (apologies to actual gangsters), or what ever it’s called these days. No matter what age, race or gender they are! Sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s for laughs. There is one scene where it’s for comedic purposes, when same meets an Asian man who is... shall we say, not right in the head. But then they did it for every other character!

How about I start typing words like cluster-f*** in every other sentence? Or how about I call you guys my “homies”? Even though I never talked like that nor have I grown up in an environment where it’s normal to say that? Gets pretty annoying doesn’t it?!

Oh, and I’ve heard this for years but I’ve never felt the need to agree but... In this movie.... Optimus is a DICK! No! Really! The Autobots say they leave, the Decepticons take over, kill tones of men women and children, destroy a whole city, ruin hundreds of lives, and then the Autobots reveal they aren’t dead and Prime basically says “We needed you’re leaders to see how bad the cons are! Now we’ll save you!”

... Say what?

Oh, and he is gruesome! By the end of the movie, Optimus looked less like the guy he was in the last two movies and more like he’s parody version from Vangelus’ review. Ewww, naaaassty.

And can someone please stop this trend of introducing stupid, one dimensional characters that are only there to die horribly on screen?! Can the movie please care about someone else besides Sam, Optimus and Bumblebee? Please?! And don’t deny I’m right. You can tell exactly who the movie cares about when the sad music is on and we spend more then 2 minutes on someone during a battle without something going boom.

Oh, and I won’t spoil the ending! But let me put it this way: besides his monstrous exteriors and voice, Bayformers Megatron is now about as scary as TEAM ROCKET! ... Just as smart too!

F***. THIS. MOVIE!

*takes a huge gasp for air*

...

*exhales*

Oh wow. I needed that.

Now, that I’ve calmed down. This movie is indeed painful. Except! For a few choice scenes.

As usual, Agent Simmons is always there to brighten my day! One of the few characters that I still like. Army dudes. Still good. Laser-beak now has a voice and has suddenly become more intimidating and frightening then not only his original versions, but also Megatron. Y'know when he was still scary. Most of the “good” scenes are with the transformers... when they are talking. There relationships with each other, as much as we get anyway, are far more interesting and real then the humans'. Even during small moments, such as when Megatron is feeding his pet... metal bugs? Cybertronian sparkings? I don’t know. And as pointless as it is--- the cape does look kinda cool.

Now for actual scenes... you can almost pin point when things actually get interesting. Right around when Sam tells the Purse Bitch that Sentinel is being targeted. There's some good moments here, especially the exchanges between Sentinel and Optimus.

But when things actually get interesting is when all the Autobots pack up to leave. You get to see actual emotions here. Sam stops acting selfish and starts acting smart. And... Okay, my favourite scene this time... is with the humans. I know. I know. But I need to get this off my chest.

When I was discussing the movies with someone I was asked, "why do we need the human characters"? Why is this on Earth? Why do we HAVE to have them there?

I thought about it and... in the first movie, Sam was... us, I guess. He was being introduced to the transformers along side all of those in the audience that also didn’t know about Transfomers either. Just as the Doctor needs a companion to help introduce things to the audience, to borrow an example from another show.

But people love Doctor Who because of the Doctor and not the companions. That’s what the second movie made a mistakes on. It was still too focused on the humans, and not the robot characters.

But this time, by the end of the movie, they finally got it right... the humans, I mean.

The Autobots are gone. None is left to defend Earth but the humans themselves. If aliens were to attack, yes, we would fight back. It’s the nature of most species to defend their lives, love ones and “territory”. Heck , even with the Autobots there, humans would still want to fight instead of just standing around.

So we get some beautiful scenes of humans fighting Deceticons--- with Cybertronian tech no less--- simply because they have to! Because they can’t go running to the Autobots. And what do we get out it? We watch our species fight some really tough, strong and smart robots with every bone in their body... including a gigantic metal version of the sand worms from Dune! Until the Autobots save them at the last minute... Ya. (this also means we barely get to see the actual robot battle. Which did piss me off.)

But the whole scene was good. So good that I’m not even going to get bitter by the fact that this already happened in an incredibly great comic series from a few years called “All Hail Megatron” In which Decepticons take over a city and the humans (soldier and civilian) must defend themselves against the Decepticons without the help of the Autobots. Even though that comic was far better and superior to this entire movie in every way and should totally be read by everyone. Yep. Not bitter.

So. If you like this movie. Fine. No problem. I however. F-ing. F-ing. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. HATE. This movie.

And well, now I made one huge sound mistake I am never going to do again and I can concentrate on the next video.

my second very serious attempt on doing this! I can honestly say I gave it my very best shot, but that I have an awful lot to learn, I honestly did not mean for this video to be this long! I was aiming at 20-25 minutes. Which I obviously failed, many points and even some jokes was left out doing the editing process as I realised how long the video was becoming!

any constructive feed-back would be deeply appreciated. Please enjoy.

Why do people look forward to the Muppets, yet hated the idea of a live-action Smurfs movie?

When I learned that there was going to be a new Muppets movie about a year ago, I became worried. Hollywood has been making a habit of creating movies intended to relaunch very old franchises, only for them to flop critically and become hated amongst many people, regardless of how much money they make. These include movies like Yogi Bear, Garfield, and most recently, the Smurfs. However, even before these movies came out, many people decried them and refused to believe for a second that they could be good in any way. Yet, when the Muppets movie was planned, people started to praise its creation and became anxious for its release. Why? What separates the Muppets movie from the upcoming live-action Tom and Jerry movie?

One reason for this is probably because unlike Yogi Bear and the Smurfs, the Muppets have always been puppets interacting with live-action humans. When you make the transition from cartoon to live-action, there is the problem of trying to apply cartoon logic to the real world. From the start, the Muppets have been able to get away with fourth-wall jokes, cartoony logic, and many guest stars, and this shows in their earlier films. It would be practically impossible to put Tom and Jerry logic in live-action, and it doesn't help that the original cartoons wouldn't fly today, plus their previous theatrical release was a disaster.

The trailers for the movie helped too. Unlike the trailers for the Smurfs, the Muppet trailers were made in a traditional Muppet fourth-wall breaking style, causing people to laugh at their humor and draw them into anticipation. For the one trailer that wasn't a spoof, they showcased the Muppets prominently. While it did grab me, I do know that trailers can be misleading.

One more reason is probably because the Muppets are much more beloved than most other childhood icons, but while I agree that is true, that doesn't mean a new movie about them will be good. Remember Muppets' Wizard of Oz?

Print vs. Film: Coraline

Sorry about the gigantic delay in updating! The charger for my laptop gave out on me, on top of some work and family complications I've been having. I swear they will get more frequent now! I'm probably lying about that last part.

Coraline (Neil Gaiman) vs. Coraline (2009)
[Sorry, no fancy hack-display card thing this time!]

I remember back in 2009 when Coraline was released. It looked good but I never made seeing it a priority. I was also a little annoyed by its release mainly because people heard the words “From the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and assumed that meant it was a Tim Burton film even though Burton’s name was NEVER mentioned. Now before you jump on me for being nitpicky, I’ll tell you why that’s not the case. I didn’t mind people mistaking it for a Tim Burton movie. Not at first. But when everybody you know makes it a point to mention the movie to you, referring to it as “Tim Burton’s new movie”, you kind of want to punch people in the face and tell them “WHERE did they say it was a Tim Burton film?!”, “You mean the new Henry Selick film?” or “Burton did pretty much everything in Nightmare EXCEPT direct, get it right!” Though you didn’t come here for me to rage about people and their constant need to annoy me. You came to find out if you should read Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, or simply pop Henry Selick’s Coraline (2009) in the DVD player.

Sucky picture, but you get the idea.

The Basics
Girl and family move to a new place. Family neglects girl. Nobody really pays attention to girl. Girl stumbles into Wonderland what I’m going to assume should be called “The Other World” and finds that there, she is the center of attention. Coraline then finds that her dream land isn’t so much of a dream, but a nightmare that was coated in a quickly dissolving sugar. Coraline Jones Coraline is… well, there honestly isn’t much to her. She is very smart, though she spends a large portion of the book and movie (much larger than I care for)sulking and being aggravated by people ignoring her and getting her name wrong. These are valid complaints, especially for a young girl, but damn… move on! Nobody is going to get your name right, so you might as well consider changing it to Caroline. There are close to no differences between Coraline in the book and Coraline in the movie. In the book Coraline is a bit more formal and polite, but that might be because the book takes place in England, and the movie has her talking like any other girl from Michigan would. If I had to point out any kind of change, it would be that she is a bit more selfish and whiney in the movie, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It gives her more personality and makes her seem more realistic.

The Parental Units
Still fairly inattentive to Coraline and more involved in their jobs. Since they don’t exactly do much in the story other than act as damsels in distress, I think I can leave it at that.

The Neighbors
Ah, those quirky, entertaining weirdos that Coraline is forced to share an old house-turned-apartment with. The eccentric and aged Misses Spink and Forcible, the zany and even more eccentric Mr. Bobinski, and just for the sake of not knowing where exactly he lives in relation to Coraline, Wybie. Yet again these characters underwent minor to no changes with one exception. Spink and Forcible are still incapable of realizing they are has-beens, Mr. B doesn’t have a name until the end of the book (which turns out to be Bobo instead of Bobinski), and Wybie… Wybie is the exception. Wilbourne Lovat was introduced in the movie as a way of keeping Coraline from walking around muttering to herself every once in a while during her time in the real world. I’m not sure how well he would have fit into the book, but in the movie it works. His role wasn’t even a big one and I still can’t imagine how the movie would have gone without him.

                                                                 Coraline in Wonderland, yes?

The “Other” World
Oh my gawd, change! CHANGE! That’s right, the majority of the changes made between book and movie were made in events and characters in The Other World. Oddly enough The Other Mother isn’t a part of this change. Sure some of her lines are cut/altered, but she’s still the same evil creature that haunts your inner child’s nightmares in both versions. The biggest change occurs when Coraline faces her Other Father. There is no garden in the book, so instead of facing the enchanted pumpkin there, our heroine is locked in a basement with a giant grub-like Other Father. That probably has to be my favorite part of the book—it’s chilling and had me turning page after page to make sure Coraline came out alright. That’s the biggest chance you can feel, I think. The book makes the Other World much more chilling and even odd from the get-go, while the film gives it a good-gone-bad presentation. The Other neighbors remain pretty consistent, with the exception of Mr. B’s rats being changed to mice for the film and the dogs in the theatre being able to speak.

The Ghost Children & the Cat
I have to say, the cat in the book was a character I was much more attached to. He just seemed so... snarky. The cat in the movie definitely has his moments and gets major points for being voiced by Keith David, but the cat Gaimen gave us just spoke to me more. Maybe I’m more inclined to like less friendly, stuck-up sounding cats because of how my family’s cat acts. Hm.

                                                                                See? Stuck up.

Anyway the same kind of goes for the Ghost Children. Because Wybie and his grandmother are not in the book, there is no mention of the girl being anybody’s twin sister. I also found humor and sadness in that the ghosts weren’t sure if they had been boys or girls when they were alive because they had been apart from their souls for so long. Then there’s when they appear to Coraline in her dream: the book has them having a picnic together, while the movie gives a more traditional ghost-visitation dream. Oh, and one of the girls in the book is strongly implied as being a fairy. Awesome.

The Plot
For as different as they may seem, the book and film are actually close to being the same. Though it is worth noting that a little more than half of the book is spent with Coraline in the Other World working on the challenges, while the movie uses them to build up to a big dramatic ending. The Other Mother also mentions a few things in the book that would have been nice to hear in the movie, such as a line about her own mother being dead. It is more than made up for by the beldam turning into a spider though, I think. The ending of the film also differs from the book. The movie includes a struggle with the beldam’s hand, Wybie playing hero, and the well. The book involves the hand stalking Coraline for some time and her tricking it into attacking her while over a trap, which results in it falling into the well.

The Winner:

When I first read the book and watched the film again, I thought it would be a no-brainer to choose a winner. And it mostly is. The movie is just so much more captivating, and offers so much visually and changed things so perfectly that the book just falls behind at times. The book is great and worth a read if you want something chilling to read and have a spare afternoon ahead of you, but the movie is something better. It’s almost like Selick took the book and coated it in chocolate. So if you have to decide between watching Coraline and reading it, I say get your favorite movie-watching snack and treat your eyes to Henry Selick’s adaptation.

This week on Good Bad Flicks I check out the horror comedy Waxwork.

In my reviews I often dissect the movie. I don't give away everything but it still falls into  spoiler  territory. So please don't watch the episode if you are afraid I'll ruin the movie. I will say, I've have had numerous people that seek the movies out after they've seen my videos and told me the film was still highly enjoyable. So take that as you will.

With that out of the way, please enjoy the show.

Waxwork

A movie that starts off lighthearted and gets increasingly gory as it progresses. It's a fun and unique take on wax museums in horror.

The movie was released in various ways on DVD. The R2 is in widescreen but has some scenes censored. The R2 also has a much sharper picture. The R1 is sold uncut in a two pack with Waxwork 2 but is in full frame. Why can't they just release it in widescreen uncut?

Comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.

After numerous requests I decided to take this week's episode of Good Bad Flicks and explore the Nunsploitation genre with the movie The Other Hell.

The Other Hell

The Other Hell is one of the more bizarre movies I've reviewed and yet is still fairly tame for the Nunsploitation genre. It's an odd mix of giallo, gore, and strange plot twists.

Comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.

This week it's the parasitic hot aunt horror flick The Kiss.

In my reviews I often dissect the movie. I don't give away everything but it still falls into  spoiler  territory. So please don't watch the episode if you are afraid I'll ruin the movie. The Kiss

The Kiss is one of the few horror films that has a focus on Voodoo and not only does it well, but chooses to do it in New York instead of New Orleans. With some inventive death sequences and two very lovely leads, I am a big fan of this flick.

Comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.

"Can a cartoon with a conscience make for good cinema?" asks this article.

I can provide an answer:

NO!!

I can't understand why the film industry of today can never learn from its past mistakes and failures.  How many successful environmentally-conscious animated films have there been?  I sincerely can think of none.  "FernGully," it can be argued, was moderately successful in its own day - that day being 1992, when the "Captain Planet" cartoon was in its heyday as well.  Let's face it, the time for animated environmentally-friendly cinema had its time, and blissfully moved on.

I was one of many millions who had the chance to see harry potter and the deathly hollows part 2 and thought it ended great. I admit I didn't watch any Harry Potter movies until maybe the Prisoner of Azkaban where I got to see how well done it was. What I thought was a great idea was when David Yates decided to re-shoot the ending train scene. I mean how strange would it have been that we see after the many years have passed to have seen entirely different actors played the older characters we have watched. I know there had been a rumor that another Harry Potter adventure might come. J.k. Rowling can pretty much do what she wants with the character but I was thinking maybe a great HP fan can write a great fan film story or movie (not the crappy ones on YouTube) that would stay true to character and create a new world of adventure/challenge for HP to face. I might write one and post and see what you guys think. In the end, HP might not really go away from theaters so lets stay tuned and see what happens.

OK, so alot of people always make jokes that reference "The Big Lebowski", and i never saw it. Apparently in these circles, its blasphemy to NOT see this movie, and i wanted to see what the big deal was about. So, as I walked from the Blockbuster, I decided to type a commentary as I watch. So here it is. Keep in mind, i was a bit skeptic going in, as I thought it was going to be one of those "stoner comedies" or a precursor to them.

in What's Up?

This is going to be something a bit new for me: I'm actually making up a schedule set in stone! Why? Well, because I have come up with a wonderful idea for Shadowbird Studios' impending 1-year anniversary. I would like to now officially announce that August 2011 will HENCEFORTH be known as...

TRANSFORMERS MONTH!

What do I have planned for Transformers month? Well, first, we're going to kick it off with an extra special event. The first week in August, I will suspend my August 6th regular stream (there's a Good Eats special on Food Network at 8pm Eastern) and instead do a special stream on August 3rd. This special stream will be a live riffing on the G1 Transformers movie!

In the weeks following that special stream, there will be two special SRs covering Beast Wars and Beast Machines. One I love direly, the other I hate with a passion. Anyone who knows me already knows which is which.

And at the very end of it all, an extra special SR (possibly a shortie) or Riff of the first Transformers live-action movie!

So, just to break it down for the TL;DR crowd:

8/3 - Live riff of the G1 Transformers movie (Justin.tv with a Recap Darkside Riffs posted later)
Week of 8/7 - Beast Wars (SR)
Week of 8/14 -or- 8/21 - Beast Machines (SR)
Week of 8/21 -or- 8/28 - Live-action movie (SR or Darkside Riffs)

If any of you wonderful artists would like to make an awesome Transformers month logo for this for me and aren't worried too much about that fact that I probably won't be able to pay you (don't worry; I give credit where it is due), please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I'll give you a rough idea what I'm looking for. As for the rest of you, keep an eye out, and tell your friends about TRANSFORMERS MONTH!

Later, y'all!

I for one can admit I have not read much of the comic book character yet can be familiar with the back story and plot of this upcoming film. I became aware of him as a young kid by his appearances in other comics such as Spiderman and also in the cartoon series genre on television. I dont wanna mention his first turn in film because...well you can guess why =). But what has been tried and failed in one part can succeed today. Im hoping they are going to do well with the origin story format and He is being introduced and reintroduced on screen. I look forward to seeing the Red Skull but played by Hugo Weaving ("Hello Mr Rogers" lol.) who I think is a great villain actor. Since He has played one before (Agent Smith, Megatron) he will do well in this film as the main nemesis. I wont see a midnight showing as some will but lets not forget that Captain America has to do well in the box office because I don't wanna see a Hulk moment happen again. I will post what i thought about the film after I see it.

As the Transformer movies come to a close (for now) in theater's, I just want to give insight on how I feel about all three movies that may not be the same as NC and his thoughts. I think he did mention that the first one was cheezy fun. I thought the first one was practically the best introduction of Transformers into cinema ever. It had many of the elements you could ever have in any Michael Bay film (comedy, sex appeal, action, EXPLOSIONS). I left the first film pleased because it brought back my childhood watching this bots on television. Yes the best introduction of Optimus ever. Well then comes Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. I know it was a bad idea to write a script really fast after the time of a writers strike. It goes to show if you try to make a top cuisine in a five star restaurant really fast youll end up with something that was from a cheap frozen dinner. The lesson filmmakers need to learn is to take your time in writing a great story that will appeal to an audience that both grew up watching the cartoon and those who are new to this form of genre. Just think about x-men 3 as an example of what its like not to take time in making a great story. I hope that down the road someone (Christopher Nolan or J.J. Abrahms maybe?) would do something to Transformers. Though I did up liking the third movie, I felt it was still left undone.I don't wanna spoil the ending but if any of you saw the ending then would you agree that maybe at least 5-10 more minutes for some resolution of certain things such as the remaining decepticons still on earth to deal with. What you all think? I still love Transformers enough to watch all three movie but i bet certain parts of the movies could be taken out and yet still be good. I say though Michael Bay did do a decent job on the films but whoever, and if ever, another director does do a reboot, please take the time to gives us a great Transformers that we can remember.

I have seen this movie and I applaud the people who put this together. A film about a group of characters, never thought to be formed as a group, come together to defeat an enemy whose weakness is the one thing people most seek. Malachite's hand made me think about the Infinity Gauntlet in some ways but over rall the movie was descent. Though I wished some of the characters who had great powers (i.e. Aslan summon the forest, Gandolf gets help from birds) be used more in the film, it was a good execution of the characters and the journey they all had to take. I say well done in the writing and the use of the locations. It looked like to me it was done just in the the local neighborhood which I think is brilliant because it gives the production the ability to get the film done faster rather then try to find a location that would fit perfectly for a scene but have to deal with red tape. I would be in favor of a sequel or maybe a trilogy. Maybe some suggestion for a trilogy like : Suburban Knights 2:Malachite's Revenge or Return of Malachite and Suburban Knights 3:Malachite's Army or Last Battle for Suburbia. Just a thought. Maybe I can help write. I applaud you all.

The last in the mainstream list is the 2008 Thriller The Happening.

In my shows I often dissect the movie.

Hey Everyone, hope you are having a great 4th. Just wanted to let you know this week's episode is up but youtube changed the time limits to 15 minutes and didn't tell me until I tried to upload the video. (you can see I've had a few that went over 15 minutes before) So, This week's ep can be seen in it's entirety at:

I don't usually do long episodes but I had a lot to talk about this week. Future episodes I'll keep under the 15 minute mark.

The Happening

For my last misunderstood mainstream film, I wanted to focus on M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening. M Night is a director that gets flack for no good reason. His movies are unique, well shot, and always entertaining. I take a look at his history and talk about how I feel he has become some sort of scapegoat for hollywood.

Comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.
