Now this... would be badass.

[Originally posted on http://obsessive-geek.blogspot.com/]

Hello, all. Now I'm a fan of tokusatsu in general, but the Kamen Rider Franchise is probably the closest to my heart. Being a foreign fan and a comic book lover, I've wondered if the Boys in bug helmets might find their way to the four color page of  the USA. It doesn't matter to me which company gets them, here's my top five Kamen Riders who could work in either the DC or Marvel universes. (I'm leaving out independent publishers because it be easy to adapt any Rider into them.)

Assembled we are strong!/Forever fight as one!

In a word: amazing.
A watermark movie for which not only comic book movies, but blockbusters in general will be judged by. As good as it honestly gets, in my opinion. Better than The Dark Knight? No, but that not even close to being important. The Dark Knight and The Avengers are two separate entities with two separate goals and will not be judged by one another. So,yeah, The Avengers is awesome.

[And now, a brief rant]
To everyone one who didn't go see this movie because of creator's rights issues or ( in the case of Armagideon Time helmer Andrew Weiss) pure apathy toward blockbusters in general and find the film blatantly panderific, I'd like to say that you forget all that an go see it anyway as many times as possible. Why?  Because this...

... and all other Michael Bay-like pieces of garbage must be destroyed. No, not just destroyed, curb-stomped! I know its coming out two weeks after The Avengers, and some of you may want to see it "ironically" (whatever that means) but this mound of elephant diarrhea must  go down like the Titanic, and be twice as more disastrous in order to make Hollywood go away from this crap!SO GO! GO NOW! HURRY! BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

[Brief rant over]

You know the most spectacular thing about this all, though? IT ALL WORKS!!! The fight scenes are well choreographed. The acting is top notch. The script is witty and fast paced. The humor works and is not either intellectually insulting or racially offensive (like some other movies I could name.)Characterization and dialogue go hand in had with the action, as if their both just two little children frolicking through a sunflower draped meadow. And not a single frame of shakey-cam in sight! This, this is almost too good to be real!

OHMYGOD, THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!

Yeah, I'm fanboying it up, so what?! Films like this don't come around too often for me to do that! So go, my friends. Go forth and be in awe. You will be glad... no, you will be elated that you did.

Excellent work, people! See you all for the sequel!

Malcolm X/Magneto Comparison Revisited

Ever since I wrote an article claiming that Magneto is not the Malcolm X of the Marvel universe, I've been informed by plenty of people that what the late Malcolm Little preached while under the tutelage of Elijah Muhammad is similar to the preachings of Magneto. While It has made me reconsider my knowledge  of Malcolm X's life (as limited as it is) I still say that the Malcolm X/Magneto comparison is kind of ,well, wrong.

Why is this? Simple: there's a difference, in my mind, to preaching violence and racism and committing open acts of terrorism and attempted genocide.

Now, I know that words can be a powerful thing, and words said by a charismatic man or woman can lead to great things. But they're still just words to be interpreted and/or followed by the listeners. Declaring war on humanity, killing countless people and generally wanting to set yourself up as the king of the world is far different and worse than preaching  hatred. For a man can choose to ignore the words of others, but his actions will always speak volumes of him. (Nice bastardization of a famous saying there, ya fool.)

So, yeah, I still say that Magneto is not Malcolm. There words are similar, sure, but I'd like to know at what point did Malcolm try to conquer the world  and declare himself its emperor?

Things Marvel and DC Can Learn About Action Figures From S.H. Figuarts

Hey Marvel and DC,

I love toys. Loved 'em all my life. And you guys have made perhaps some of the best toys I ever had. But recently I've discovered a new love of toys from one brand: S.H. Figuarts. They've consistently made quality toy after quality toy, and I've even suggested that you guy might want to team up with them for a figure line. Bu I'm sure you guys don't feel like hearing from some random guy on the internet on how he feels you guys can make your toys better, right? Wouldn't that make me look presumptuous and arrogant in you eyes, telling you, guys who've been making action figures since the seventies, how the can improve?

TOO BAD, I'M DOING IT ANYWAY!

I kid, I kid, dear sirs and madams. This is not meant to insult you in any way, shape or form. This is merely one guy wanting to see his childhood heroes get the same treatment as the karate bugmen he's come to love as an adult.

Now certain things ( articulation, waist movement, durability, weapons and accessories accurate to the characters) you've basically mastered, but here's a short list on techniques and idea you can borrow from S.H. Figuarts:

Top 5 Superheroes That Need More Done With Them

You might be wondering what the title exactly means.  This top five list is for characters who get the short end of the stick, characterization and screen time  wise. So, let's get started:

5. The Atom

I'm not sure which version of the Atom's gotten more of the shaft. While  Ryan Choi(who's my personal favorite) is dead, Ray Palmer was in Cry For Justice. Either way, both these guys need to have more exposure in the DC universe. Get Gail Simone back on writing  and Atom book so we can see the crazy adventures of Ivy Town's Diminutive Defenders.

4. Donna Troy

Okay, extremely confusing backstory aside, who is Donna Troy as a character. I know Linkara summed her character up in his Prelude to Countdown video, but can she please get something more than Wondy's sidekick/ Titans member/ widow to one of the most despised characters in comics?

3. Cyclops

Is there a reason Slim over here functions only as team leader/white knight to Wolverine's Dark Knight? Shouldn't he have more personality after 40 or so years? (I mean besides asshole-ish behavior. ) Give him some time away from the X-Men. Let him have some solo adventures and some relationships outside the world of the Merry Mutants.

2. Darkwing Duck

Make It So: Action Figure Request

[Originally posted on http://obsessive-geek.blogspot.com]

I'm a big fan of toys. Hell, I assume anyone who grew up from the '50's to today can say that toys hold a special place in their heart. Tell me that there isn't one toy that makes you nostalgic and warms you  a bit when you see it. None of you can say that, can you.

Ah, happier days
Well, I digress. Today's Make It So is not focused on past loves, but  on what has not been. (Not yet, anyway) This is my list of things I want to see made into super-articulated action figures.

1. The Rocketeer
I know Medicom mad a figure of him, but I'd like one that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

2. Static
Seriously, DC, Why hasn't he gotten a toy yet?

3. Jack-in-the-Box

4. Other Astro City residents
Specifically Samaritan, SteelJack, Cracker Jack, Confessor, Altar Boy, Winged Victory, Quarrel, MPH, Beautie, Cleopatra and the Hanged Man. (Sorry for the two separate entries. I'm a big fan of Astro City, and I especially love Jack-in-the-Box)

5. Ultra Act Ultraman (Renewal Version)
This is less a "make this" and more a "bring this to the states". You need a excuse, Bandai? Air the dubbed episodes on the Hub or Cartoon Network and make a deal with Toys R' Us.

6. Galactus

I mean a twelve inch complete Galactus sold as a whole, not parts in a set. Same with Sentinels.

7. S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla

Yeah, another " bring this to the states" request, but why hasn't this been brought over yet? It's Godzilla! You'd figure that if anything from Japan would sell, it's Godzilla!

8. S.H. Figuarts Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers
Yeah, another thing I want from Bandai. But seriously, make them. NOW.

9. Marty McFly

With guitar, hoverboard and sun glasses.

And 10. Earthworm Jim

Love this groovy space hero.

This probably isn't the last time I'll be doing this again sometime, but for now, I'll keep it at  ten. Go on and discuss your toy desires below. Thank you for your time.

Okay, If I don't get this out it's gonna bug the hell out of me for weeks. So  Marvel has decided that Ms. Marvel ....

Hooray for swimsuits!

... shall finally take up the title of Captain Marvel.

Hooray for full body suits!

Now, Marvel, I just have one question: Is it really necessary to make Ms. Marvel Captain Marvel?

Look, I know that you have to keep someone in that name so DC doesn't decide to finally call their Captain Marvel Captain Marvel on his books. But does Carol Danvers truly need to become part of the legacy? She already surpassed the Kree Avengers in popularity a long time ago. Is being Captain Marvel now anything more than a stunt and/or mercenary tactic to keep the Big Red Cheese from using his name?

Make It So: Bring Comics Back to the People

The Big Two's Greatest Heroes. Making children's hearts soar.

Welcome back to Make It So, the series which has on dude pleading to huge companies to listen to him.  This time around I'm going to make a plea toward DC and Marvel, the big two comic companies.

My request is simply this: Bring comic books back to the people.

I know that sounds a bit cryptic, but hear me out. You and I know that comic books haven't truly had the business the had decades back, and in some ways it can be traced to the business heading to comic book shops and certain book stores. What I'm requesting is for you guys to bring comics back to the grocery stores and magazine stand of old. You could even get some new venues, like having Target or Wal-Mart carry your books.

Also, put up more commercials for your product. Both of you have channels (Cartoon Network and Disney XD) to do that, anyway.

The business may have to change a bit (such as toning down the gore and sexual exploitation)but I think that this would be advantageous to both of you.

P.S. For everyone pointing out digital distribution,  I'd like to paraphrase Stan Lee in that digital distribution will never replace the feeling of a physical book in your hand.

Magneto Is NOT the Malcom X of the Marvel Universe

"Humans, your time has come... "

I've been thinking about this for the past couple of weeks, this comparison with Magneto and Malcolm X. And to be quite honest, it seems both fairly presumptuous and kind of uncomfortable to compare the Marvel supervillain  with one of the more famous civil rights leaders. Let me explain:

  • Magneto, while having a sympathetic backstory, Doesn't exactly get my sympathy after all he has done
  • Malcolm, while a radical angered by the decades of discrimination, never went to the extremes that Magneto has since the X-Men's debut.
  • Lastly: Malcolm wanted freedom and justice by any means necessary. Magneto wants the subjugation of all humanity.

The last part really drive it home for me: whereas the man known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz truly wanted freedom and equality, Erik Lensherr wants to outright rule and dictate over humanity, no matter who they are. That's what disturbs me, as a black man, about the comparison.

"We declare our right on this earth...to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary."

The 10 Worst Crossovers Of Last Decade

You can call whatever you want.  Crossovers or events or editorial events but they are all the same.  Over the last decade we have seen some of the worst and most over bloated crossovers.  Ones that make the 90s ones tame.  Here my list of what I think are 10 worst ones from last 10 years.
10. Chaos War.  I know this seems weird to be on the list but this wasn't a bad mini crossover.  The problem comes in a poorly done  final issue featuring characters that are suppose to at final fight missing.  Plus you have Hercules losing his powers (which I think was a editorial mandate) and Alpha Flight being the only characters coming back.  Editorial mandate that Yellow Jacket and Swordsman were not allowed to come back.  Dumb!  :(
9. Amazon Attacks.  Can't really say more then what been said by Linkara in his video but this was awful that ruined Amazons, the gods, Wonder Woman mythos.
8. Dark Reign.  Really bad idea to darken marvel even more with Green Goblin in charge.  Yeah that was dumb.
7. Spider-Island.  Dumb idea that is poor done  with lame tie ins.  Spider Herc?  Oy!  Also points off for not having Mary Jane keep her powers at the end.
6. World War Hulks.  How to you take concept of being a hulk and making joke out of it?  By making a ton of stupid looking hulks including fellow heroes.  Lame idea, bad writing, and really only saves it at any point is last two of Savage She-Hulks mini-series.
5. Secret Invasion.  Skrulls having replaced the heroes over time?  Pretty good idea and way to fix Civil War and some other bad ideas from marvel over the years.  Did they do that?  Did they reveal that the one who came up with law behind Civil War was written by a skrull?  Nope.  Did they fix beast back to classic version?  Nope.  Bendis said that he actually like Morrison version.  Yeah more people at marvel agree with that one then fans.  Well they did bring back Mockingbird which was good but marvel miss use of her and Hawkeye hasn't been.  Bendis made the badass Spider-Woman been skrull the whole time.  Why?  Why?
4. Final Crisis.  What happens if you try read a book and there pages missing.  Like they been ripped out.  That sort like what trying to read Final Crisis is.  Dumb idea stuff never explained.  Bad writing from Grant Morrison.  Why did Mary Marvel have to be evil and her costume like a prostitute?
3. Civil War.  Boring, to long, and predictable lame ending.  Could have gone a different way but nope.  When you start with New Warriors being killed and blamed for everything.  Just lame and insults the fans.
2. Blackest Night.  High body count.  Awful idea.  Marvel Zombies was a cool idea because it's not in regular marvel universe.  This doesn't work because it continued to kill characters just to kill them.  In the end brought back the wrong people.  No ted kord or some other characters that were really killed just to do it.  Really people wanted osiris to be brought back.
1. Countdown.  Wait countdown?  It's horrible 52 issue mini-series.  Yeah but has so many crossover/tie in books that pretty much it could be consider one.  If you seen Linkara's review this was a pretty bad one.  The tie in books were pretty bad.  Death Of New Gods was just excuse to kill off New Gods to set up Grant Morrison's Fifth World but that never happen.  There amazons attack which was horrible.  I could go into rant on messing Mary Marvel up just for Grant Morrison.

15. Current Incredible Hulk book.  Just the whole Hulk vs Banner split fight again just nothing a lot new.  Just stupid.
14. Punisher.  Oh Punisher what have they done to you.
13. Flash Thompson as Venom.  Why?  Of all the stupid of stupid things you could come up with.
12. Alternate covers.  A few years ago this would have been higher on the list but marvel doesn't do this as much as they use to.  They still do these lame alternate covers months every once in a while.
11. Future Foundation costumes.  WTF?  They are the most bland and ugly costumes for FF ever.  Hopefully they will be gotten ride of.
10. To many books for a character.  I know sometimes you want to tie into a movie but or popular character but did Deadpool really need 5 books?  I like the character but was overkill.  Thor, Captain America, Iron Man books that have flooded the market have been way to many.  Then there is wolverine.  Yeah all his books and books he appear in.  Enough said.
9. Death being a joke.  DC was at fault for this to but seems to have pulled back a bit on it.  Marvel continues to make death a joke where characters don't even stay dead for a month or two anymore.  You are trying to make money with a big death but the impact isn't there anymore.  People know that most characters will come back sooner or later.
8. Lateness of books.  I got to give DC one thing only one book since reboot has been late.  Marvel continues to fail at getting books out on time.  How do tpbs come out late?
7. Crossovers.  There have been way to many of them in recent years from Marvel.  From big over bloated ones to smaller ones.  People are tired of them and why even though they may still sell the number that do have been shrinking.  Maybe a clue as to the fact fans are tired of them.  Don't call it editoral event or crossover event or event.  It's a crossover.  Your not fooling anyone.
6. The fact that OMD hasn't been undone yet.  I have not bought a regular MU Spider-Man book since OMD and the only one I will buy will be because of She-Hulk being in it.  I have no interest in what they have done to spidey and his villains.
5. Use of Kitty Pryde.  Now being killed from inside by millions of brood.  Why?  Do the writers of the x-books hate this character this much that they can't stop doing bad things to her.  Being shot in space.  Stuck in dumb looking space armor.  Split up with Colossus for stupid reasons.  Now this.
4. Avengers.  See my rant on Bendis' run.  This may change when Bendis leave but I'm not holding my breath.
3. Half of the X-Men books.  This would have been all of the books but there was before Wolverine took half the x-men back to where the belong on east coast.  I was against the whole move to San Francisco and pretty much was when I stopped reading X-Men.  Well you got Colossus pretending to be juggernaught.  Jublie a vampire.  Hope being useless as supposed savior of mutants.  How could you trust cyclops anymore after pretty much bringing them to death trap where nothing good has happen since moving to the island.  If I was x-man I leave the moment Wolverine said he was reopening the school.
2. 3.99 price tags for regular book.  They don't seem to learn that people don't like when they do that and that most fans can't afford that price.  You want less people buying you books put more books at 3.99.  A lot people can't afford the 2.99 price tags either.  Even worse they skimp on some of the books with story being shorter then normal.
1. Marvel's use of real She-Hulk Jennifer Walters.  I am a big fan of She-Hulk and even though she seems to be making a come back in may come june she probably won't be in any books again.  Lyra and Betty get more use in books lately other her short appearences in FF.  The problem goes back to use Hulk.  When Peter David was writing her book Jeph Loeb was using her a punching bag.  After her book the way she was used in hulk books was criminal at times.  From 6 months to year not disappeared and then seemingly to be dead or crazy red she-hullk.  Then after the horrible World War Hulks she spends most of battles in Incredible Hulk doing nothing.  Standing around or just getting punched or not even used.  Then Chaos War she doesn't even appear in the final issue even though she went with all the other hulks.  Then depowered in Greg Pak's last story arc on Incredible Hulk and was suppose to have defining moment that never happen.  Then just disappears from anything other then Fanstatic Four with Betty taking what should be her spot in Defenders.  Betty wasn't a she-hulk then she be the one bruce have them help the team.  I can even go back to the fact Avengers Dissembled garbage.  Marvel should be ashamed of themselves for how they have treated one of there most popular female characters.

The Devourer of Worlds

Universally Accepted Truths:

Galactus has existed in his present form since the entropic collapse of the universe that existed prior to the regular Marvel universe we know today.  He is frequently described as having "godlike" attributes, represents an anthropomorphized force of nature and all that jazz.  Stan Lee and Jack Kirby frequently danced around the issue, leaving it open to fan's own interpretations.  Which is what I'm doing right now, interpreting things through my own personal filters for you, my interested audience.

Galactus is the God of Destruction

Perception Determines Reality:

Every non-human sapient race in the wider Marvel universe sees Galactus as something different.  What they are seeing are the various gods of their own people's various creation myths and legends of destruction.  As the readers, we're seeing Galactus in the form that the human residents of Earth-616 are seeing because we're human.  The first being in the Modern Era to fully see Galactus was Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards.  Richards, being a man of <insano>SCIENCE!!!!</insano> doesn't see Galactus as a traditional god, thinking of him in purely rational terms as being a giant from outer space wearing a totally sweet suit of Kirbytech.  His perception of Galactus shapes the perception of us, the readers, and we have conditioned ourselves to see Galactus this way ever since.

  • In the universe of Marvel Zombies, the cannibalistic undead heroes and villains are only capable of operating on simple zombie instincts.  If it's alive, then it's delicious juicy meat and brains to them.
  • In the Marvel continuities of the Transformers comics, the readers are seeing everything not as ordinary humans see it, but through the perceptions of a Cybertronian because they're the protagonists and antagonists of the story.  In Cybertron's own mythology, their God of Destruction is a purely malevolent force that ravages worlds purely because creation offends him.  And his name is Unicron...

Your Mind:

Blown.

Maximum Carnage and the Ethics of Vigilantism

Hey everyone! I've spoken...a lot...about how I think people ought to behave in superhero comics. There's a big difference between vigilantism and being a real superhero. Or just being a hero, period.

Batman...comes close. Because he has...occasionally...killed his enemies. And he does break the law. HOWEVER...and this is a BIG however...as I've talked about before, the guy works very closely in conjunction with the Police Department of Gotham City. Superheroes, as I've said, are like deputized superpowered citizens.

But if there's one person that I think really does come close to being a vigilante that's represented well and in a likable way...it's Peter Parker. Good ol' Spider-Man. Spidey HAS to work outside of the law. He doesn't always have the best support from the cops or from the people and certainly not from the media. He just does good and lets his actions speak for themselves, whilst showing himself as a wisecracking but well-meaning guy, he's your FRIENDLY neighborhood Spider-Man, after all. He's the everyman, he's a normal guy blessed with extraordinary powers who was raised to do the right thing. And he does it WELL.

That's NOT to say that he hasn't been tempted to walk a darker path in Mainstream comics. Like in "Maximum Carnage".

Linkara has stated that he had no desire to look at "Maximum Carnage" on his show. Why? Because according to him, though we're welcome to our own opinions, "Maximum Carnage doesn't suck".

I had heard that the storyline was, well, POLARIZING. It wasn't JUST a Spider-Man team up comic, which, in itself, can be iffy enough to think about, it was an example of a team up where one's mileage SERIOUSLY varied on whether it was good or bad. In fact, some people who worked on it gave it a nasty nickname the way they did to Maximum Clonage, which they called "Maximum Bonage".

…pffft. That sounds like a porno. :XD: I might need a few minutes to stop giggling.

…….okay, I'm good. Anyhow, Therefore, I've decided to take a look at it to determine, for myself, if "Maximum Garbage" as it was sometimes known as, lives up to the hype of being a bad comic.
First, some backstory. You already know about Peter Parker, I'd think. But you might not know about Venom, his nemesis of sorts. His name's Eddie Brock, a reporter at the Daily Bugle where Pete worked. He, regrettably, had been going through an awful time in his life. He even had cancer. His life was in the toilet much so that he wanted to commit suicide. Being a good Catholic, he went to a church to seek God's forgiveness...

And then Peter's symbiote costume, which had just freed itself from Peter, latched itself onto him. WOMP.

Photobucket

Eddie got turned into Venom, a being whom Peter's spider sense doesn't work on since he was once bonded to the costume Eddie has now, a being much physically stronger and more durable than Peter, and with a nasty habit of...well, he likes to talk about eating brains and such. It gets weird with him, folks. Really weird. Blame Todd McFarlane.

But there was a time when Eddie's costume spawned a "child". A bit of the symbiote was left behind at Eddie's old prison. He broke out...leaving a psycho named Cletus Kassady with a bit of costume that went WILD when it bonded with him, creating the even more crazy murderer Carnage.

Photobucket

Venom, in his own twisted mind, tries, to an extent, to right wrongs. Heck, he even became a kind of anti-villain in later years! I LIKE Eddie. He's not that bad as far as villains go. But Cletus Kassady, Carnage? BAH. Carnage is just out to f--k people up and indulge in twisted fantasies.

And guess what? There was a 14 issue series devoted to him going out and causing pain and havoc!

...no. No, I don't know why it had to be that long. So let's not waste any time. Let's open up the pages and dive headfirst into...MAXIMUM CARNAGE!...

Photobucket

...okay, ACTUALLY it's "Spider Man Unlimited 001", but let's stick with "Maximum Carnage Number One", alright? We begin with Cletus Kassady singing "Here Comes The Bride".

...I just realized how strange that sounds.

Photobucket

Carnage is strapped in, surrounded by guards, and about to go through a psychiatric evaluation. One little problem: he...can break out...anytime...he wanted.

He just had to wait until it was FUNNY! XD

I've got no complaints so far, although I think we're jumping into the bloody, violent death a bit too soon. But hey, here's something to cheer you up: a funeral!

...wait, what? :O

Photobucket

See, Harry Osborn, Pete's old buddy ol' pal, is dead. And this means...angst! AAAAANGST!

Photobucket

No, no, that's not enough! I want to hear REAL-

Photobucket

Ah. There we go. THAT'S the stuff.

"He was ready to destroy EVERYONE I LOVED!...INCLUDING HIMSELF!"

I kid. This is actually rather touching. And it's tame angsting. Compared to "Maximum CLONAGE", the regret and mourning over Harry and Peter's concern for his part in it lasts only a few pages instead of half an issue.

Now we return you to Carnage, who's met up with a new friend.

Photobucket

...Shriek is clearly not "all there". But keep your eye on her. Some time after his escape, they encounter-
Photobucket

Wait, WHAT?! What the HELL is the Spider-Man Doppelganger doing in some random alley in the middle of broad daylight?! Where'd he come from? What's he doing here? Well, soon after, Spider Man shows up for a fight scene with him and Shriek. But where's Carnage? Well...it's not quite "Darkseid on Mary's Couch", but still...

Photobucket

Yeah. Uh, kinda weird. Let's move on to the next issue, which begins with Spider-Man in an alley being threatened by punks. I will give this comic points for not making all of the thieving little jerks black or Latino. And it's then that the young teenage heroes named Cloak and Dagger appear to help Spidey out, coming from…

…okay, you know what? This is a bad habit of the comic. People just popping out of alleyways. Just…appearing. Almost randomly. And this isn't the first time it happens. Remember Doppelganger?

Y'know what? Let's put up a counter.

2.

Right. Moving along, we get a nice fight scene where-wait.

Photobucket

That guy's blind? HOW?! Look back at the previous page.

Photobucket

She hit him in the chest! And why is he emphasizing every other cry of "blind"? Did they go to the Frank Miller School of word Emphasizing?  Moving along. Cloak and Dagger take Spidey to their church whilst Liz Allen, Harry Osborn's wife before he went all evil and died, gets a visit from Mary Jane. And now for a creepy moment.

Photobucket

…Normie Osborn just turned into Damien from "The Omen"! Jeez! And this will amount to WHAT in the comic?...

Yeah, that's what I thought. Anyhow, Carnage just leaves a message with Jameson that he's seeking Venom and Spider-Man…even though Spider-Man already knew that. And news of Carnage's rampage was already being printed across the newspapers and shown on the evening news, so VENOM'S gonna find out too. So…what was the point of that scene?

Let's move on. Shriek, Doppelganger and Carnage show up. They fight in the chapel with our heroes as Shriek goes on how Cloak's…well, his CLOAK drove her to madness. Getting sucked into it can drive a guy insane. Of course, she was a drug-peddling crack addict and she and Carnage have killed at least 86 people for "fun", so pardon me if I don't feel sorry for her-

Photobucket

OH MY HOLY CRAP SHE JUST KILLED DAGGER.

The threesome make off with, thankfully, a foreshadowing of another person soon to join them. But unfortunately this page, which SHOULD end dramatically and forcefully with Cloak's cry of loss and pain…instead ends with bad artwork.
Photobucket

Yeah, it looks more goofy than heart-wrenching. I wonder if the Chipmunks ever did a cover of "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight"? That'd be PERFECT for this moment.

But I've got good news for you lovers of Venom. He shows up in the next issue, learning that Carnage is killing people off like flies in New York. How does he learn this? From an airport newspaper. So…really…like I said before…that scene with Jameson meeting Carnage was kinda pointless. There's no indication that the newspaper is even the Daily Bugle! You went through an entire scene on how Carnage met with Jameson to tell him to tell the world "I want Venom and Spidey" and ya can't even write the words "Daily Bugle" on the newspaper headline? REALLY?

Anyhow, the next scene involves Tyrone, aka Cloak, yelling at Spidey because-
Photobucket

…oh. OH. OHHHH.

For God's sakes, THE FIRST ISSUE OF THIS SERIES STARTED WITH SPIDEY ATTENDING HIS BEST FRIEND'S FUNERAL! You could not POSSIBLY be any more unknowingly insensitive! Let's…let's just move on. Carnage yells at Shriek for trying to kill Spider-Man because "The Web-Slinger's Mine".

"Geez, Carny, I just thought-"

"THOUGHT?! YOU THOUGHT?! Sweet cheeks, that's a vile little habit I think you better break!"

…well. This guy's evidently not ONLY a sociopathic psycho, he's a chauvinistic PRICK. For ANYONE who was thinking "Hey, Nick, maybe you should feel sorry for the guy", I've got news for you. Carnage isn't actually insane. He's just an asshole who likes indulging in violence for violence's sake. He is a sadist, pure and simple, who rejects ANY attempt by ANYONE to try and redeem or help him. And you'll see that in its more purest form later on in a fashion that's completely idiotic and stupid.

Here's the deal. A good supervillain can, in fact, be somebody whom we, the audience, wanna see dead. And they can be violent, and cruel and egotistical and racist and the like. But UNLESS they have somebody in their life whom they show genuine kindness to, UNLESS they at least try to put up SOME kind of fairly decent behavior before engaging in depravity like some villains have the decency to do…UNLESS there's just ONE bit of genuine goodness to be found in said villain…I am not going to want to sympathize with or get behind him. I am not going to like him. I will barely want to READ about him.

This is one of the reasons why so much of Mark Millar's stuff depresses me and annoys me. He LOVES making villains like that! He made an entire comic series about it called "Wanted" where the bad guy is the protagonist. And NO, that guy is NOT likable. NO, that guy is NOT sympathetic or nice in ANY way and NO, I am NOT gonna review that comic either! I don't usually LIKE villain protagonist stories because, hello, they're VILLAINS. They have the character and moral fiber of a tree frog. If I WANTED to read a dark and depressing and disgusting and gory story

SS/OM: Monthly Comics Corner: September part 2

Hey guys! Ready for round two?

Right. I know. I'm late. Why was I so early with part one? Cause I totally forgot to add all the jump links to all the names and topics in part one. And there are so. Many. Links. It takes about two hours extra out of my time. And Wikipedia has now burned itself into my brain @_@ I’ll fix the first later. Oh and suddenly, Blog spot has suddenly changed a bunch of settings on me. Joy. (links have been added to part one, plus a little extra on Batgirl and Green Lantern)

Now that my dignity has taken it's daily hit... On to the review!

Demon Knights #1

I’ve been on a sword and sorcery kick for a while now, thanks to the latest issues of Journey Into Mystery(review in Marvel section). So after hearing two great reviews of Demon Knights, I gave in once more and bought myself and issue: And I loved every moment of it. A team of sorcerers, demons and warriors in the old days, fighting dragons, and led by the Demon Etrigan.

We start at the fall of Camelot, and are quickly introduced to Jason Blood and the Demon Etrigan, which Merlin binds to Jason. And Madame Xanadu, who was meant to go to Avalon with Arthur's sleeping body. We cut to some time later, with Jason and Xanadu, now a couple, enter a new town. They find Vandal Savage (In a much more barbarian garb) and grab a drink in the tavern to reminisce old times. They also come upon Shining Knight, who is obviously a girl in man’s armour, Al Jabr, an “ambassador, and Exoristos, most likely an amazon. We discover a plot to destroy the town by a conquering army, called The Horde and when the town is attacked, the team join together. And then a dragon pops up to kill them.

Oh, and Etrigan and Xanadu are sleeping together behind Jason’s back :)

This is what I've been looking for in a team up comic: a rich variety of characters, who we meet gradually and naturally but all within the first issue. And we get just enough about each character from a few hints, their clothing, dialogue and actions to understand them without having to spend too much time on back story. They’re team up also feels natural. They haven’t been hired by officials but brought together by fate. They fact that this is also a sword and sorcery comic, something rare these days, is only a bonus to everything else we get! The only issue I have is that Al Jabr looks like a certain character from Assassin's Creed.

I know that Etrigan is meant to be the leader of this knew group, and I can’t wait to find out how he is chosen.

Demon Knights is a must read! Definitely Recommend!

Red Hood and the outlaws #1

I feel dirty.

Oh, not from the content. This thing could be barely considered soft-core porn. No, I feel dirty because I actually paid full price for this comic, despite knowing exactly what it contained. Why did I torture myself like that? Well, because if I came out and started screaming my head off about how stupid and insulting this comic is, without even reading it myself, I'd just look like a complete hypocrite.

I have eaten my words and oh, how they taste bitter in my mouth.

Lets see: Another dark comic? Check. Another set of secret organizations we never learn about? Check. Another team lead by ANOTHER one of batman’s sidekicks? Check-a-roni! Starfire turned into a walking, sociopathic blow-up doll? Che--Wait, WHAT?

No, I’m not kidding. Despite keeping the storyline that she has worked with the Teen Titans (though I still don’t know how much of that is canon anymore either), they’re going with this idea that Kori and all Tamaraniansdon’t feel emotions, don’t remember past relationships and she will have sex with anyone who asks.

...

Excuse me for a moment.

*Snarls, crashing glass and constant swearing are heard in the background*

Now... I would... LOVE. To let my feelings loose... But I’ll save my “thoughts” about Starfire for a different rant. Lets see what's going on in this crap, shall we?

Roy Harper is about to be executed for trying to help a nation, Jason Todd and Star Fire pop by to save him. They go to a private beach where Kori shows off her boobs and asks Roy to have sex with her. Oh, and apparently she thinks love has nothing to do with sex, can’t remember any of the Teen Titans and feels that the way she acts symbolizes her woman independents *grits teeth*. Roy of course, is stupid now and decides to have sex with her because... sex. Jason, the far more cooler character of the book (never thought I'd ever type those words), talks to a woman named essence about two more secret organizations called the Untitled and All Caste. And we are barely told anything solid about them accept that Untitled has destroyed the All Caste and Jason was once part of the all cast. Some computer nerd is looking for Starfire. And Jason goes to the All Caste HQ where he get attacked by undead monks.

This comic insults me on so many levels. As a woman, a comic nerd, a Starfire fan, as a Roy Harper fan, and yes, even a slight Jason Todd fan (don’t ask) and probably some levels I didn’t even know I had. The characters are one dimensional (except Jason Todd. Huh.), and honestly, if this book was only about Jason, it would probably been really good. The artwork looks like a failed attempt at cubism, and the writing is awful!

And obviously I’m not the only one who thinks so, because when I went to the comic book store on last week there was still a big pile of Red Hood #2 was still sitting on the shelf, beside a bunch of empty spaces where all the GOOD comics had been. If ever there was proof of a god, this was it.

Do not buy Red Hood. Don’t. Not even to see how bad it is. Don’t give this piece of fire kindle the money.

NOT RECOMMENDED. AT ALL.

Super Girl #1

And suddenly, the world is good again.

Honestly, I was never planning to get this one. Super Girl just has never been a character I was into. A little too teen-girlie-girl for my taste, I guess. And the idea that “this Super Girl has no love of earth” held no interest to me either. I thought they were giving another “dark streak” to a character. But when I saw a damaged issue at a low discount, I thought “why not?”.(I’m cheap. So sue me.) And man am I glad I did.

Super girl #1 is the retelling of Super girl's origins, starting when she crashes on earth. Once again, this is a story I've read before. I’ve seen the perky teen excited to be alive, and the confused girl speaking only in an alien language. But in this version, we get to see the story from Kara’s point of view.

Kara wakes up in a blizzard, confused, but not panicking, believing it to be a dream. She enjoys it at first, and is amazed by the robots that land nearby. Then, when she is attacked but the robots (soldiers in metal suits), we see a natural, and realistic view of someone realizing they are actually in danger, they don’t know where they are, or understand what anyone is saying, and something is very wrong with themselves. The “something wrong” in this case being her new powers. Intrigue and curiosity turns to fear, then anger, then panic and pain and then exhausted hopelessness as she is forced to fight each robot to survive, not realizing just how strong she is. So much is given to us it what would usually be a short scene. Kara finally begins to fall apart in her hopelessness, until Superman shows up above her.

I love this retelling. One of my favourite scenes is after Kara wakes up, and she contemplates all the odd things she sees and feels. How her mom would kill her if she was seen in her "Graduation outfit" before the final trial or how her father would love to see the robots. That, and the last scene, where she reaches a breaking point in her panic.

I absolutely love Kara’s redesign. It actually looks like something you wouldn’t usually see on Earth. Only issue I have it... the way the bikini part attaches to the rest just... reminds me too much of the butt flap on long underwear. But thats pretty minor.

Y’know what else is awesome about this comic? Despite all the panic and terror running through super girls head--- it’s one of the only comic's I've read from DC this month that wasn’t dark. I’m not kidding. There is enough humour and comedic timing that the fear and anger coming from Super Girl never actually weighs down on the comic. This is also due to the colourist, who uses bright primary colors reminiscent of Superman: the animated series.

Definitely Recommended
---------------------------

So that was the DC reboot. My impressions? There are actually a lot of good books here. Just as I was told, new angles that couldn’t have existed before are being tried out. And I'm reading about characters I once had no interest in! The fact that some of the first issues are still getting second and third printings right through October means that I'm not the only one. I’ve also been taking advantage of DC’s digital comics, because, well, the print ones are selling out before I can even get to the store. And the system they’re using is pretty good.

I’ll probably talk about what’s been done to the women of the reboot (good and bad). But I want to wait and see what the heck they are doing with Catwoman (the first issue didn’t not instil joy to most people) and whether or not Power Girl is the identity of Mr. Terrific’s new girlfriend and if she is, that there had better be adang good reason why she doesn’t have her own book!

But this reboot still has three major problems:

1: Too much dark.

Y’know what? Screw it: From hence forth I will name his age (until someone more qualified thinks of one): The Dark age!

... What?

Okay, not the most original name, but it fits. Really, out of all that I read, one of the only ones that wasn’t dark was Super Girl. Some do this well, like the horror titles (and there are a lot of Horror titles by the way), while others just seem to have gore for gore sake and there just isn’t that much left in variety. Or they try to copy Batman. Joy. Which brings me to the next point.

2 TOO. MUCH. BATMAN.

I get it DC. Batman is you’re cash cow. But this is ridiculous.

This is no secret that I HATE how much batman is in these comics. Check out the DC New 52 page if you don’t believe me: There are 4 comics with Batman headlining. 2 where he shows up as a remember of a separate team. 4 different comics with his sidekicks (I already counted Batman and Robin in the first tally). 3 involving one of his villains and Old Western takes place in Gotham. Not to mention Batwing. And that’s only September. In October, there were even more stories for Batman’s villains! And lets not forget that Batman Incorporated is suppose to be back in a few months.

Look at any other character with a headline comic. Only Superman comes close with 2 headline comics, 3 for his sidekicks and 1 team-up. We don’t even get a kid flash comic or a wonder girl comic? Nope! They’re too busy being lead by Robin in the teen Titans. Speaking of which, how many sidekicks did Batman get to keep in the reboot? All of them! Including the one he got from Super boy prime punching a whole in reality! We don’t even get a retelling of Damian’s past. We don’t get to watch some of them grow again or take a different path like Super Girl!

And This pisses me off to no end. Which reminds me...

3: Continuity? What’s that?

Y'know how we all thought that this reboot was going to make continuity less complicated? Well, instead we got the exact opposite! Batman has all of his sidekicks, Green Lantern didn’t get a reboot at all but just a continuation of the last universes story. These stories don’t make any sense to everything that is currently happening. And yet, famous stories like Crisis on Infinite Earths were cut because it apparently wouldn’t fit.

It feels like DC is cutting the old stories and keeping the ones that are the most recently famous ones. I like Geoff Jones’ work, but did anyone think about just, oh, I don’t know, retelling it? With a new twist perhaps? Maybe the green lanterns know about the other corps much sooner? Maybe you could reintroduce us to Damian Wayne instead of just dropping him on us in the first issue? In keeping so much, there is no continuity. Just a jumbled mess of new ideas jumbled in with old ones that make no sense.

DC obviously still doesn't understand the meaning to the word “reboot”. There’s no denying that there are some really amazing stories coming out of the reboot. But I actually would have preferred they did a complete reboot. It hasn’t been the first time a company has done that and had it turn out well. But by just picking and choosing, we’re still missing out on some really good stories, and continuity is just as messed up as ever.

That's my thoughts on the DC reboot.

Journey Into Mystery #627

I mentioned that Journey into Mystery had inspired my sword and sorcery kick. It centers around the quests of the reincarnated Loki, who after dieing, was reborn as a young child (who is henceforth nicknamed: Little Loki :) ). He has no memory of his previous life, other then the fact that he is Loki, god of Mischief. Loki is no longer filled with ill will or evil intentions but Thor is the only one that actually believes it. The whole thing is told to us like an old fashion sword and sorcery fairy tale. And it’s incredibly refreshing to get this new version of Loki. He’s still smart and mischief-ish, but he’s not spiteful towards Thor or has any evil intentions. And it’s amusing to hear Little Loki speak in old medieval tongues about the internet or how someone called him a troll.

However...

This is not that Journey into Mystery. That one has been paused before the big climax of the story. Instead we go from an old fashion D&D adventure, to an old fashion Encountering the Devil story.

We start with an old urban myth: at closing time, the devil randomly picks a single bar to have a drink. If the bartender survives, they can ask for a tip.

And then Mephisto walks into a bar. He’s had a bad day and feels like drinking it off and ranting to a mortal. He talks about how the appearance of the Serpent, an Ascardian that's trying to rule/destroy the universe, has been causing uproars on all planes of reality . (Don’t ask, I will explain in the next review when we get back to Loki’s plot). He’s had to deal with the “higher ups”, hordes of demons trying to take power, gather information from different gods, and console the demon Nightmare. He humours the barkeep by “answering” some questions about God and whether or not Mephisto is actually the devil. And it’s hilarious. See, Joe QuesadaThis is how Mephisto should be acting. He’s a trickster that says and does things to meet his own ends, and he’s intimidating, laid back and talks like the slyest man alive.

It’s also relevant because this is all the behind the scenes things going on during Loki’s plot.

When the night ends and Mephisto begins to leave, the bartender asks for his tip. Mephisto is impressed and agrees and ask if the Bartender wants to be immortal.

Okay, I know how this ends, you know how this ends. Everyone knows how this always ends. And yet it’s still an incredibly disturbing and gory scene. Basically, he gets turned into ink. Literally and extremely graphically. One more time!: Gore Warning

Mephisto writes a letter to be given to the serpent, and then makes one more: a message to the victor of the battle that “Loki Laufeyson has freed Surtur from Limbo” . (Once again: Explanation will be in October review)

This comic never ceases to amuse me. And scare the crud out of me. Whether it’s a “deal with the devil” scenario, or watching Loki talk his way out of a mess, I have yet to be disappointed.

The Amazing Spiderman issue 669 and 670: Spider Island part 3 and 4

Okay, lets make it clear: I’m going to explain what is going on in this story. If you don’t have a freaking idea what I’m talking about, grab some popcorn, check out the wiki links and settle down for some long reading. Or, do what I did and “just go with it.”. There are villains, events and other miscellaneous things mentioned in this series that requires at least a Minor Degree in Spider Man History to fully understand. However, the way the comic is written, you don’t feel that way. So, ya: just go with it.

And once again, we have another story getting close to it’s climax: The Jackal, an old Spider Man villain with a penchant to genetics, creates bedbugs that infects most of New York with spider powers. Hence the name"Spider Island". Including some villains and heroes. He also gathers together several spider-powered bad guys to help him take over New York. To counterattack, the AvengersX-menFuture Foundation and all the other heroes of New York gather together to fight back. A quarantine is set up to keep anyone from leaving the island and a vaccine is developed for everyone not infected. The towers act as psychic jammers, and not long ago, the prototype ended Spiderman’s spider sense. (Just go with it)

But even the heroes of New York are having trouble fighting all of the bad guys. So, Peter Parker (out of his spider suit) gathers everyday citizens of New York: A mother of two kids, police, blogging nerds, etc, to fight the army of super-spider-powered villains. And it one of the most epic things ever.

After the battle is over, life continues for most of the citizens, who all adore their new powers. And Y'know what? It’s great to finally see Pete happy. He can’t tell anyone he’s spider-man, but he doesn't have to hide that his spider powers. In fact, seeing everyone go about there daily lives with spider powers is one of my favourite things about this book.

We also find out that Eddie Brock, currently the Anti-Venom has started to cure people (Just go--- actually, I'll explain this one in my review of Venom #7)

Issue 669:
In the last issue Pete and his new girlfriend Carlie had been checking out one of the Jackals old hideout looking for clues (Why is Carlie there too? Because Carlie is very persuasive. And an awesome character. It might have taken One More Day to get her, but I really like Carlie, and the scenes of obvious jealousy coming from Mary Jane Watson,)

They get ambushed by some spider-powered super villains, and Parker shows off some of the recent Kung-fu he’s learned from Shang Chi since he lost his spider sense (Just go with it) Carlie convinces him to get spider-man to contact her so they can form a plan. Yaaa, she doesn’t know about Pete yet either. The Future Foundation have also teamed up with Horizon Labs, the science faculty Pete works at to develop a cure. Not toe mention try to keep Mayor J. Jonah Jameson (Mayor. Seriously. I need to read the back issues for this series) from blowing a blood vessel. They also inform him that the virus is now airborne and JJJ has also been infected *wide grin*.

Flash, the current Venom and super spy for the government is fighting the “Spider King” (a mutated spider creature. Just go with it.). Spiderman meets Carlie later and join up to defeat the spider-powered Shocker. Meanwhile, Julia Carpenter, the current Madame Web, is having a panic attack on the floor because of so many people suddenly being connected to the Web of Life all at once. Yes, there is such a thing as the web of life, which all spider people are connected too. I should note that I only know a handful about all this stuff, so you’re not the only one in the dark. Just go with-- you get the gist right?

Anywho, Carlie and Shocker suddenly begin to mutate further and become giant spider creatures. And then we find out who the Jackal has been working for: The Spider Queen, renegade super soldier and enemy to Spider Man and Captain America.

Issue 670:
So we find out that the Queen is trying to make herself a spider kingdom. And low and behold, all of those deeply infected with the virus are under her control. The majority of New York All of the spiders, now the majority, including Carlie, trot off to central park so they can bow to the Queen. All accept for Mary Jane Watson, who despite being in the middle of spider island, has yet to be infected.

We get a bit of The Queens backstory, and, discover that the Spider King is actually Captain America, mutated by the virus to be her “perfect consort”. Ew. The Queen finds out from one of her men that the Anti Venom is curing the New Yorkers. Venom, disguised as the spider King (who he defeated in his own book) volunteers to kill Anti Venom and heads off. Really, he’s only planning to send Anti Venom to Horizon Labs.

Meanwhile, JJ is so mad, he gives up on Reed Richards, and heads back to his own HQ for plan B. And when his car gets attacked, Spider Man swoops in to save JJ... only to get saved himself by the SPECTACULAR SPIDER MAYOR!!!

I could not stop laughing. This issue is the reason I started reading this series. For this one single moment when JJ gets Spider Powers and works side by side with Spider Man.. And it has been worth every penny.

Anyway, while Spiderman’s brain tries to process all the jokes running through his brain, Venom’s group, calledProject Rebirth, informs Reed Richard that they’ve found a cure, which Reed almost ignores, saying that it would be impossible for a cure to be created so soon.

Smartest Man alive, everyone! Give him a round of applause!

Luckily, Reed listens just long enough to hear about Anti Venom. We get a scene of Venom going nuts as he captures Anti-Venom, AV is latter captured by Venom and dropped off at Horizon Labs. I’ll get into it more when I review Venom #7. And as the city reaches 99.9% infection, Mary Jane finally gets spider powers.

Back with Spidey and JJ, they both head to NYC Emergency Command Center and we find out JJ’s secret plan: Enlisting the help of Alistaire Smythe, the Spider Slayer.

Those that haven’t read Spiderman in a while, have no idea just how mortifying this is. Last time Smythe was around, he killed JJ’s wife, Marla, catalysing JJ’s no tolerance campaign against murder’s in New York and “menaces” like Spider Man and basically putting a much darker streak on Mr. Moustache. For Spiderman, Smythe was the partially caused the loss of his spider sense, and the death of Marla started Spiderman on a more determined mission to let no one die.

Back to the comic: Smythe starts egging JJ on. That’s when the Queen infiltrates JJ’s mind, appearing as his dead wife and orders him to kill Smythe. JJ suddenly begins to mutate and lunges at Smythe. Spider Man and the guards try to stop JJ, but it’s too late. JJ gets to Smythe and rips out his throat. To be continued...

I really do love this series. It’s fun, incapsulates all the big heroes and some little ones and there really are some terrifying moments. JJ attacking Smythe was particularly shocking. I have been loving Dan Slott’s latest run on Spiderman.

And honestly, the only problem I have with Spider Island is that it’s mostly over shadowed with Fear Itself, a much larger event comic. If it happened before or after, it could have been so much bigger and gotten the attention it deserved.

Venom #7

Okay here we go:

Venom: Alien symbiote that possesses the bodies of humans and has Spider Man's abilities, and fills there heads with darker throats and intentions. Currently, Flash Thompson, redeemed Peter Parker bully, honourably discharged soldier and paraplegic, is the current Venom. Using the symbiote, Flash works as a super spy for a part of the government under the name: Project Rebirth. He can control the symbiote, but can only be bonded to it for 48 hours at a time to keep the symbiote from gaining complete control. Though lately, it seems to be gaining more control.

Anti Venom: The original venom, Eddie Broke, who was trying to make amends and “get clean”. The symbiote is similar to a drug, making the owner think he “needs it”. That and Eddie has developed Cancer many years ago, which the symbiote fed off of. But the last few times he had the symbiote, it was driving him mad, and tried to force him to kill innocents. Cut to several years later, the Chameleon is the new Venom and Eddie is trying to atone. Anti Venom was created when the symbiote tried to bond with Eddie again. A combination of the healing powers of a mutant, Eddies white blood cells and the symbiote changed Eddie into Anti Venom, a creature made up of mostly antibodies. To top is off, AV has developed a bit of a Jesus complex, due to thinking of his new life as a “miracle” and calling himself “the cure”.

In the comic, we find Anti Venom in a church, where mutated New Yorkers are gathering to be healed. When the Queen discovers what AV is doing, she sends Spider King (Agent Venom in disguise) to kill him. Venom leaves, intending to capture AV so New York can be cured. On the way, we find out that Flash’s father is dieing in the hospital, and that Flash has no intention of seeing him. Flash's father was not a nice guy: Alcoholic, abusive, and abandoned his family. When he gets to the church, he feels the symbiote start to tense up. It’s loyal to Flash for the moment, but feels bitterness to Eddie. It’s not long before the symbiote takes over, and Venom and Anti Venom begin fighting.

Flash appears to be in control again, but is still attacking AV. AV tries to make Flash understand: The symbiote will always manipulate the wearer. It will make you lie and do things you don’t want to do. Eddie thinks about what things he’s done as Agent Venom, and how he’s lied to his girlfriend Betty and realizes AV is right. Flash orders the symbiote away, and in doing so, the symbiote tries to attach itself back to Eddie. Eddie screams for mercy as Flash watches until he realizes that if Anti Venom is gone, then no more cure.

Eddie lies to the symbiote, telling it that he needs it. But it’s hard to tell if Eddie is lying to the symbiote or himself. Time skips and Anti Venom is dropped off at Horizon labs. Eddie then heads to the hospital and shares one kind moment with his father before he dies.

This is my first Venom comic of this series and I love it. Its an interesting dynamic on Venom and I definitely want to pick up the trade. And even though Anti Venom is an incredibly silly name, he’s also a complex and interesting character. Especially when he’s in the middle of his Jesus Complex. It’s honestly hilarious.

There’s a lot of deep stuff here, whether it be the dynamic between Flash and the symbiote, or even Flash and his father.

X-23 #14

Um. Okay. here’s yet another story in the middle of a plot. Ya, I know, I should have started these reviews half a year ago. X-23 is... uh... okay, short version: X-23 or Laura Kinney is Wolverine’s clone raised to be a living weapon and killed anyone she’s order too. She gains her freedom as a teenager and some time later, joins the x-men. Then Laura realizes just how much being around controlling, idiot grownups like Cyclops is doing worse for her, and hits the road (go Laura). Oh, and Laura found out she has a soul, a discovery that created a star tattooon her palm (yaaaa, I'll get into it next issue). She joins up with Gambit, fights Mss Sinister, discover that the weapon X program is being restarted, has a short team up with Daken, then Wolverine and Jubilee, meets a mysterious woman that knows a lot about Laura and then goes to New York to find Alex Cimini, someone that Laura was once ordered to kill, but refused. Once again: Just go with it.

This saga starts in New York with Laura having a dream about an odd symbol. When that symbol shows up in the sky, it causes earthquakes across the city, Laura teams up with Spiderman to clean up the mess. We get some really funny banter between the two as Spiderman makes Wolverine comparisons and we eventually find out that Spiderman also had a dream about the symbol. Then the Future Foundation shows up.

This issue starts at the headquarters of the FF. Reed and Sue Richards, Spiderman and Laura are trying to find out what caused the earthquakes. We find out that the earthquakes came from a machine at a university physics lab. Laura had been there earlier, looking for Alex, and wants to leave to check up on him. And it becomes obvious that the Thing doesn’t trust Laura. So to calm her down, Sue takes Laura to the play area to meet all the children. We get a cute scene until Laura buckles over, her chest glowing. Another Earthquake has begun.

We also get a few scenes of Gambit running around looking for Laura. It’s sad he doesn’t get a lot of screen time in this book.

Laura wakes up in the lab, no happy to be there. Reed apologies, but says that the machine causing the earthquakes have been receiving signals. The signals seem to be coming from Laura. Valerie Richards discovers that there are two more passive signals, coming from Sue and Spiderman.

Spider Man realizes that this sounds a lot like the Uni-Powers... and suddenly, I’m confused again. Really, we get barely any explanation to what Uni-powers are except that all three had once been possessed by it. I had to wiki it, but basically, the Uni-powers is an entity that possesses other beings, turning them into Captain Universe to defeat someone or whatever entities do when they possess people.

However they realize that the Uni-Powers still doesn't explain the earthquakes or the weird symbol. Valerie uses the scanner to activate the passive signals. Sue, Laura and Spiderman are suddenly teleported out of the room and on to a... uh... red planet in front of an army of monsters.

This issue is just one big WTF moment after another. Which isn’t totally a problem. I’ve already read X-23 #15 so I'll save my thoughts on the Uni-powers till next time. But as this issue stands... it’s okay. I mostly just find it jarring because this series has mainly been about X-23 discovering herself, and stopping the Faculty again. This series makes about as much sense as the star on her palm... which it think is probably the idea. After all, stars are the motif of Captain Universe... hmm.

But the series has been good so far and we still have those amusing moments with Laura trying to be social.

Dynamite Entertainment

Game of Thrones #1

I recently got into Game of Thrones TV series (book is on my list) and when I heard of the comic, I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve never read the book and I haven’t watched the first episodes, so I don’t know how accurate it will be. It was an okay read but... that’s it. There are interesting things being said but none of the drawings actually make me feel interested. Except for one scene at the beginning and an illustration of a really freaky tree, nothing really made me want to read more. And no, the fact that I already know what happens to these characters is not a good enough excuse. Translating a story into a new medium should attract fans weather they know the story or not. Not bore them. I suggest reading the book or checking out the TV show.

Meh. But I gave it to Justice League, so i'll give one here: Recommended.

So that was September. All in all, it was a really good month. One thing I wanted to do during September was experiment. I picked up a lot of titles that I never would have before. A few months ago, I never would have picked up an Animal Man comic and it turned out to be one of my favourites. And despite some friction in places, there were a lot of good things coming out of the New 52. And I am pretty sad that there are only a few Spider Island comics left to go. It’s become one of my favourite events next to Blackest Night.

Next week will be the October Comic review. After that, well...

November is NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH! A writing challenge to write a novel in one month! And I’m gonna use it to work on my webcomic! I’ll be Scripting, sketching and writing, trying to 50 000 words! So, other then the monthly review, I’m actually gonna take a break from the Sketch-Log for the month.

But check out my portfolio site, Art Slug, or my DA site, where I'll be slowly posting snippets and sketches! Seeya soon!

WOO WOO!

Well hello there. This week I've got for you the third episode of Fair Use Analysis, which is the second and final part of my Wolverine review.

Previous episodes: Charade (Smallville), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Part 1).

This episode is a bit longer than the previous one...which explains why it took so long to finish. I still haven't quite figured out my format, so that's definitely something I need to work on. Also this time I shook things up a bit. Let me know if I'm on the right or wrong track. I want to make this show as fun as possible, so I'd really appreciate the constructive feedback.

So, my questions are:
- How am I doing so far? Getting better? Worse? (And in what ways?)
- How can I improve the show in the future?
- What should I review in future episodes? I welcome all media (except novels and such, which would take up too much time and not provide any clips).

the new warriors were at some point the next big thing. or maybe just marketing thing i don't know i wasn't around back then. but i can only assume that they tried to make a big deal about them just from the cover

THE NEW HEROES FOR THE  90's! popping out ripping through the number 1 issues of legendary book like x-men fantastic four and for some reason alpha flight. Does this book warrant such claims as "the next generation of super hero excitement"? lets find out.

we open to page one and are introduced to night thrasher a new creation for this book who will act as team leader but at the moment it seems he's doing what any hero would do threaten someone with death, our honorable hero ladies and gentlemen. and in a extreme totally rad manner he drops the guy. but don't worry it turns out the guy was actually nova! thrash is lucking cause if rider's powers hadn't kicked in he would have one very dead teenage superhero. kind of a dick move but whatever I'm not the superhero.

now we see marvel boy who apparently is high up on the "boggle scale". also batman shirt in the corner. ) and so we see Vance(his real name) try to impress the avengers
,he does not. after cap tells him to take a hike night thrasher waves him down. i just think it funny that that how he is brought into the warriors the equivalent of "hey you! yeah you!,wanna join our vigilante group?"

then namorita is introduced  she's a college student (weird for an atlantean) and is in queens with her class to ask questions about the contaminated ground and how genetech (evil big business) is gonna fix it.

we then see night thrasher's base of operation, a high rise in Manhattan. we also learn his backstory he's batman. only difference is he has a Asian lady and black dude as his alfreds. then thrash explains he hacked shield to find nova and marvel boy. they don't approve of this act of terrorism but its not like he is trying to get these total strangers to trust him so they can fight crime together.
he then calls firestar and threatens to reveal her alter ego to the world she doesn't take it well.

back in queens... genetech unwail there "ambient ionic energy locator and collator" or simply put a machine that cleans dirt. but it turns out environmentalism really doesn't work because Terrax (the ex- herald of Galactus) explodes out of the machine.

the boys are then greeted by a angry firestar
, but before anyone can be formally introduced there is an earthquake. all sighs point to queens so they head off but not before firestar says something clever!

namorita is get her ass whooped but is saved by "these brave new warriors who have burst onto the scene". speedball ditches his mom and decided to help.

meanwhile... the warriors are not doing well especially night thrasher whos plan was use skateboard and throw smoke pellets... nice job
 speedball makes bad joke
marvel boy those this with him   then this happens to terrax

then Dr. scientist explains "terrax was a disembodied sentient energy form that needed constant groundsoil replenishment". which means if he isn't on the ground he explodes.

the avengers come in to take the glory and the gathered heroes contemplate their futures. they decided to fight the crime the avengers never touch, so they join hands as THE FANTASTIC FOUR!.... I MEAN NEW WARRIORS.

but was it truly the beginning of a legend? not really i mean most remember them as the guys who started civil war.
this meant well and seemed to have the makings of something that could have been good but was stuck as a promotional tool for the decade never being more then a joke. the art was exceptional being drawn buy mark bagely who even the casual reader may know as the original artist for ultimate spiderman, the writing wasn't great but wasn't the worst just a bit corny filled to the brim with moldy jokes and dated references(fabian nicieza). a good effort but not a great start i give it 3 out of 5.

thanks for reading and you can read more reviews at my blog http://www.idiotbox2099.blogspot.com/ . I also post whatever is on my mind thanks and see u later.

Here it is, episode 2 of Fair Use Analysis! (Ep 1 here.

Because there is so much to say about the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and because I've yet to figure out how to edit more quickly (and because I'm very busy studying music production and failing to get any sleep), I decided to make this one a two-parter. In fact, I haven't even finished writing part 2 yet, and with my busy schedule, I suspect next week will be another non-FUA video, but this week you get some FUA. Right here:

And yes, I am aware that Film Brain already did a Bad Movie Beatdown of this movie, but I've had some things to say about this movie ever since I saw it. If any observations are similar, I'll have to blame the filmmakers for that, but I think I managed to largely avoid repeating what's already been said.

Let me know what you think. And what you think I should analyze in the future. Almost any medium, including music, is welcome (as long as it has sound or some sort of visuals and doesn't take too much time to get through, so no novels).

I've written and produced my own comic book for two issues now. This has been hard and rewarding all at the same time. Over the course of the 6 months I've worked on the comic I've learned how to save incredible amounts of money, sold my car and realized how hard it is to develop a fan base for unseen material.

Two days ago I found out that by the 22nd of this month I have to move out of the place I'm at now. I grew up in this house since I was 12 and have used it as a home base for saving money.

The sour part of the story is that I'm halfway into episode number three of my comic book (out of a 5 episode story arch). I had to tell my artist that we must halt production. I don't get upset when someone says they're going to sleep with my mom; I don't lose my temper ever usually; I didn't even get mad at the guy who threw something at my neck in the bar last night...but I almost cried when I had to write that e mail. Two and a half comic books away from telling a complete story, MY complete story and now I've to save my money for the next place I move into. I don't even know if there will be a next place. I don't care if I eat, or drink or have enough money to treat a lovely lady out on the town...I care about finishing my story.

Maybe next week will be a little better...

Hero Corner: The Avengers - Quick Thoughts on Season One

“The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” is Marvel Comics’ latest foray into the animated hero genre.  The series airs on their parent company’s Disney XD cable channel squeezed in between live-action young-teen comedy and cheap animated cartoons dedicated more towards an even younger audience.  It’s a rather odd fit, but given the fact that they’re competing against Time Warner’s Cartoon Network (which also owns DC Comics) I suppose it’s better than nothing.

With their first season now over with, it’s time for me to give a few thoughts on this series and how it compares not only to their DC counterparts, but also against their own earlier incarnations, including the incredibly MORONIC “Super Hero Squad”.

First a little backstory for those who aren’t familiar with the Avengers (or who mistake them for the BBC TV series featuring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg)… The Avengers came to be in 1963 as a collection of Marvel’s heroes, namely Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Ant-Man, and the Incredible Hulk, basically brought together because of the mechanizations of Thor’s brother Loki.  Eventually their ranks would expand to include Captain America, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, the Thing (from the Fantastic Four), Wolverine (from X-Men), and Magneto’s children Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver.  Much like their DC counterparts in the Justice League of America (which pre-date the Avengers by only three years), the Avengers had a very fluid cast of characters, including several reformed villains, aliens, and numerous web-slingers both male and female.  They’ve also had their share of splinter groups, including the West Coast Avengers, Force Works, and The Initiative.

But while Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men were able to appear in numerous animated series, there was only one previous appearance of the Avengers, and that was in the 1999 series “The Avengers: United They Stand”.  It was a very weak series, featuring lesser-known members and pretty much wrote out the three “major” members Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor.  The series only lasted 13 episodes, mostly because Marvel went into bankruptcy.

Way back at the beginning of the 70s, years before it even became a Japanese tokusatsu live-action TV show, Spider-Man managed to be the second American superhero to get his own manga series. Batman beat him out by a few years out east, but Spidey was Marvel's first hero to pull some numbers with the Japanese. Probably based on the fact that his outfit is quite literally "big eyes & speed lines". It was written and drawn by Ryoichi Ikegami, who later gained fame in the States with one of the first English translated manga, Mai The Psychic Girl, as well as Crying Freeman, Samurai Crusader, and Sanctuary. It was also co-written by 8-Man creator, Kazumasa Hirai. Despite the retitling that was given to the America reprinting of it, the Japanese title was just Spider-Man

The story is largely based on the original comic book, although its relocated to Japan. Yu Komori is working on an experiment in his school's lab, and accidently infects a random spider with radiation, which bites him. Yu soon realizes he now has spider-like powers, and within the span of just three pages manages to come up with web fluid and working shooters for them. After dawning a costume he sews together on his own, he decides to fight crime as Spider-Man! He then starts tangling with Japanese versions of Lizard and Electro, as well as some original ones.

The thing that works for this is Ikegami's gritty art style that works for him better later on in some of his own titles. Marvel Comics released this in scattered comic book issues in the 90s, never completing the original print run though. There was an official manga done of The Hulk done around the same time as the Spider-Man one, but it had an even shorter run, and hasn't been reprinted in English. There was also an X-Men manga which was an adaptation of the 90s TV series that was published in America by Marvel along with the Spider-Man one. A more kid-friendly manga called Spider-Man J came out a few years ago, which Marvel first reprinted in Spider-Man Family, and then in two Spider-Man J graphic novels. Although there's so far been no English collected edition of the original 70s

Marvel Mangaverse was originally a collection of one-shot specials showing an alternative anime-styled version of the Marvel Universe. These 8 issues paved the way for the Marvel Mangaverse comic book series, as well as Spider Man: Legend Of The Spider Clan and X-Men: Ronin.

It starts off with the Mangaverse version of the Avengers lead by Irongirl testing a new technology that attracts the attention of the criminal orginization Hydra and the rebellious forces of the underwater nation of Atlantis lead by Prince Namor. This causes the arrivial of the gigantic Godzilla-like Hulk to go on a rampage in New York. The Avengers assemble their giant robot, Iron Man, to stop it, while keeping it out of the clutches of the evil mutant, Apocalypse. Then, the meta-altered Fantastic Four tangles with the interdimensional menace, Annihilus. Ghost Rider roles in next to try and take the monsterous Hulk on his own. A Kabuki version of Punisher is introdueced next. Plus, Spider Man is redone as a ninja kid. The X-Men lead by Storm bring up the rear. Finally, all the heroes combine their efforts along with Dr. Strange and a very anime catgirl version of Tigra to stop The Hulk, Hydra, and Namor to save the world. But thanks to the hammer of Thor, the day is saved, but only at the cost of two of Marvel's greatest heroes(who never would've ended up together like THAT in the regular comics!).

Definately check this graphic novel out! It features the talents of Ben Dunn, Lea Hernandez, Adam Warren, and Udon Studios. A must for all anime and comic book fans!
