Hello there, MH here tormenting others with the loop of the ducktales theme since 2011. Okay while my review of Jak X is on the way, I've decided to take a look at the best and worst sidekicks in video games. Of course the rules are, I have to have played the games and the sidekick actually has to be a person or robot, in other words a thinking character of course with some on this list a loose term. Basically no companion cube or any other inanimate object. So I'll start on a good note with the Top 10 best sidekicks:
10. The Spirit Fairies from Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Phantom Hourglass on the Nintendo DS was the first of it's kind to use a stylus for all the action in a zelda game and maybe even the first adventure game as well. Now while this is noted as being the easiest of the series and known for not coming up with any thing else new. The game is still brilliant and this is helped by the spirit fairies. In the first half of the game you save them but in the second half, you have enough gems and they help you, power doubles attack with a flaming sword, wisdom doubles defence and courage gives you the beam sword. Sadly the final boss of the game stops you from using courage but you'll probably use power for most of the game anyway, but courage has a secondary ability at the end, she can give you time orbs which allow to freeze time in the end bosses, awesome!
9. Zelda from Zelda Spirit Tracks
I know I'm showing slight favouritism here, but the 2nd ds game was much more improved than Phantom Hourglass and so was your sidekick. Instead of being a power up, Zelda's disembodied spirit could as well as giving you advice, take over the bodies of the Phantoms, big suits of armour in the game's main dungeon that you keep returning to and take on their powers such as rolling for example as well as being invincible. Plus in the final battle with her body returned to her, she kicks serious ass with the light arrows as Link has to distract the boss so Zelda can do the damage. Just cause she's a princess doesn't mean she can't kick ass. I'm looking at you Peach, well I would but you've been captured again, seriously that bitch never gets the chance to check her voice mail.
...Just a little something I filmed. My next Christmas special review will be up tomorrow.
See it on Youtube.
... Mario fixes the pipes to his bathroom, as they appear to have
clogged since his return to the Mushroom Kingdom after saving the
Princess yet again. Mario takes a wrench and twists a bolt off of two
pipes.
"Waaaahhh." Mario gets soaked in yellowish, clear water. His
plumbing skills have faded greatly since undertaking the duty of saving
Mushroom Kingdom's royal highness. He re-tightens the pipes and coughs
up water. Suddenly, he hears his front door burst open. Mario gets to
his feet, exits the bathroom, and is confronted by a toadstool.
"Mario, Bowser has kidnapped the Princess, again" the toadstool
said. Mario wipes his brow, jumps high in the air and yells "wahoo!"
Mario sprints towards the front door which is still wide open.
Just as he exits, and pair of young koopas with sunglasses in a
kart zoom by Mario's house and throw a black trash bag towards Mario's
front door step. Mario leaps back into the house to avoid the bag,
which hits the ground with a loud thud. Mario stares at the bag as it
sits motionless. He slowly approaches the bag. As he gets close, the
bag rustles slightly. Mario flinches. He slowly reaches for the
opening of the bag and opens it.
Inside is a young, blonde haired woman, in what once was a fancy
pink dress. She has cuts and bruises all over her face and is covered
in blood and green goo.
Mario kneels down and gently lifts the young woman out of the bag
and into the house. He lays her gently on his living room couch. The
toadstool looks on in shock. Mario removes his hat and lays it on the
woman's chest.
"Princess?" toadstool says. Mario stands and approaches a closet
across from the bathroom. He rips open the door. The closet is lined
with mallets, tanuki suits, penguin suits, lab coats, feathers, stars,
and fire flowers. Mario grabs hold of a mallet and flung it across his
back. He takes a fire flower and consumes it. His red shirt turns
white, and his blue overalls turns red. Mario exits the closet.
Mario stares at the Princess and the toadstool. Toadstool looks to Mario.
"Mario. Where are you going?" Mario looks to his front door, then back to toadstool. "Mario?"
Mario exits the house. At the curb sits a motorized blue kart.
Mario sits in the kart, turns on the engine, revs it twice, then speeds
off. As he drives across desert, tundra, forest and sea, Mario's blood
boils, hotter and hotter.
Eventually, Mario arrives at Bowser's Castle, a fortress of black
brick and steel. A moat of lava surrounds the castle, skeleton fish and
sentient fireballs leap at Mario from underneath him. Mario doesn't
flinch as he walks towards the entrance gate.
As Mario enters the castle, he's confronted by a military of
goombas, koopa troopas, shy guys, and ba-bombs. Waves of these monsters
launch themselves in suicide bomber fashion. Mario launches fireball
after fireball at these monsters, killing them off one by one. He
launches an inferno from both hands. Eventually, they begin to close
in. A koopa gets within inches of Mario's face. Mario leaps into the
air and uses the koopa's head as a launching pad. He rains fire upon
his enemies as he falls back to the Earth.
Mario lends next to what has become a mountain of burning death.
He arms himself with his mallet, circles around the flames and clobbers
anything that decides to move. The flames engulf the pile and it begins
to disintegrate into ash.
In the distance, Baby Bowser emerges from the throne room entrance
and slams the door behind him. He points aggressively at Mario. Mario
spins the hammer once, lays it upon his shoulder, and sprints at Baby
Bowser, who retracts his arms and legs into his shell and starts
spinning. Mario shoots fireball after fireball at Baby Bowser. Each
flame causes him to grow a deeper, brighter shade of orange, until he
glows a fiery red. Baby Bowser launches at Mario.
Mario places both hands on his mallet, winds up, and swings
mightily at Baby Bowser, who flies into the wall, completely shattering
his shell, leaving a weakened, vulnerable turtle. Mario puts his mallet
behind his back and punches Baby Bowser repeatedly in the face. Blood
launches from his mouth with every punch. Mario's white gloves are
stained a greenish-red. Mario then takes his knee and crushes Baby
Bowser's head between his knee and the wall. Teeth fly out of his mouth
and his skull cracks. Baby Bowser's now left barely breathing.
In the throne room, Bowser slowly approaches a bloodied, battered
Luigi who's wearing a penguin suit. Luigi holds his hand in front of
him and tries to shoot an ice blast, but Bowser stomps his hand. Luigi
screams in agony. Surrounding them are five dead Yoshi's, two red who
have been decapitated, one blue who had his neck broken, and two whose
remains burn.
One remaining green Yoshi gets to his feet. Bowser turns his
attention to the Yoshi, who slowly accelerates towards Bowser. Yoshi
grabs a burning Yoshi with his tongue, brings it to his mouth, launches
it and hits Bowser in the face. Bowser grimaces. Yoshi leaps at
Bowser, and tries to plant his feet on his head. Bowser retreats into
his shell, and the spikes on his back becomes enlarged. Yoshi flutters
his feet in desperation. Yoshi descent slows, which causes him to avoid
getting impaled on Bowser's spiky shell, but it causes him to crash
into a nearby wall.
Luigi stands and fires an ice blast at Bowser, freezing a portion
of his shell. Bowser turns around and snarls at Luigi. He quickly
approaches Luigi. Luigi lops ice continuously at Bowser, who seems
mostly unaffected by it. Bowser closes the gap and lifts Luigi by his
throat.
Mario kicks open the front door. He has his mallet in one hand and
Baby Bowser resting on his shoulder. He lays Baby Bowser down on the
ground. Bowser roars at Mario. Mario rears back the mallet, targeting
Baby Bowser's head.
"Wait!" Bowser said. Mario points towards Luigi. Bowser rears
back and throws him towards Mario. Luigi skids to a stop a few feet in
front of Mario. Mario smiles and smashes Baby Bowsers' head with the
mallet, bits of gore and brain splatter on the Mario and Luigi. Bowser
roars loudly and sprints towards Luigi. Mario steps in front of Luigi
and prepares to swing his mallet. Bowser closes in, Mario swings, and
his mallet shatters upon impact, but not before sending Bowser sailing
back.
Mario sprints towards Bowser. Bowser shakes his head, regaining
his focus, and stares down Mario. Mario throws a vicious right hook,
but Bowser blocks and retaliates with a headbutt, forcing Mario to the
ground. Bowser jumps in the air and aims to land on Mario, who rolls
out of the way. The force of Bowser's sheer size leaves a dent in the
castle floor. Mario scrambles to his feet and jump kicks Bowser in the
forehead. Bowser rolls onto his back and gets stuck in a semi-circle
limbo.
Mario jumps on top of Bowser's stomach. Mario contains a fireball
in his hands, the fireball grows in size over time. Bowser's eyes grow
wide. Mario throws the fireball at Bowser's face. Bowser opens his
mouth and swallows the flame. The force of the fire rolls Bowser to his
feet and flings Mario to the floor. Bowser quickly spins and blasts
Mario with a wave of fire breath. Mario is blasted backwards into the
wall. Mario sees his clothing returning to normal and his fire power
disappearing.
Bowser takes a deep breath, his mouth glows bright. Mario sprints
away as Bowser fires his breath at him. As Mario circles around the
room, Luigi takes off his penguin suit. The flames follow Mario
wherever he goes.
"Mario!" Luigi cries as he throws Mario the penguin suit. Bowser
runs out of breath. Mario grabs it and it magically grafts itself to
Mario's body. Mario hits the brakes and stares down Bowser as he
inhales. Mario quickly freezes Bowser's feet. Bowser tries to lift
himself out, but to no avail. Mario runs around Bowser. Bowser fires
his breath, but fails to hit Mario before he gets to far to his left.
Mario leaps onto Bowser's head and hits him with a barrage of ice
balls. Bowser's entire body starts to freeze, starting from his head,
working its way down to his torso and finally his feet.
Mario hops off of Bowser. He approaches the pieces of his mallet
and freezes the segments together. He takes his new ice mallet,
approaches Bowser and crushes his head with it. Bowser's head explodes
upon impact and the mallet sticks in his torso. Mario stares at
Bowser's headless body. Luigi limps towards Mario and places a hand on
his shoulder. Mario shrugs it off and heads for the exit. Yoshi
approaches Luigi and they both watch as Mario exits Bowser's castle.
Mario pulls up in his driveway. He looks at the house, unsure that
he wants to enter. He exits his kart and approaches the front door.
Mario opens the door and sees that the Princess is no longer on the
couch. The sound of water running hits his ears. Mario creeps towards
the bathroom. Mario's footsteps make a splashing sound as he gets
closer, water engulfs his beige carpet. Mario opens the bathroom door.
In the bathtub, the Princess sits naked, motionless as the bathtub
overflows. Mario walks to the running water and turns it off. He sits
on the bathtub's rail.. Mario gently holds the Princess's hand.
Princess's eyes flutter slightly. She smiles. Mario smiles back.

Guest Appearance from TumorGX as ARNOLD Mario
...Howdy!
We continue the countdown of underused arthropods in films with a long-beloved, moustached guy who can jump really high:
Mario!
Once again, hello members of TGWTG, hope I'm getting some of you into following my podcast. For those of you who have just stumbled upon this and haven't read/seen/listened to my previous blog, this is my podcast called Level Up: a weekly random video game review. I've been doing them for a while, and decided to start posting them here 7 at a time (you can listen to one each day until I post again next Wednesday!). For those of you have been following me, sorry I missed last week (AGAIN!): I have no good excuse, other than being forgetful... But I remembered this week! These episodes would have played from May 14th to June 26th 2011.

Level Up 71 - Pokemon Blue part 1
Level Up 72 - Pokemon Blue part 2
In an effort to help protect the reviewers of the Reviewer Multi-verse safe from the court run by the Mad Judge known as Judgment… the Net Judge seeks out those who might be at risk. He starts at the place this started Reviewtopia. He happens across DeLonge Wannabe and prevents him from committing more serious violations of the Review Code. Hoping that Review Court can be avoided the Net Judge recruits the pissed off music critic to help him in protecting the people from video game gangster rap.

In this period of time, I passed my one year mark of making these podcast. At that point, I made some changes that have stuck (just things like a new intro, longer time frame, etc...). This is basically how I still do my show, but things do of course change slightly.

Level Up 43 -The Adventures of Batman and Robin (This continued Bat-month: the first of my August theme months)
In this episode, Jeremy gets a little more personal in describing how the geekery of his past has shaped hhow he sees himself in the present and will continue to shape his future.
Reminder: Special birthday stream featuring the rom hack Pokemon: Chaos Black at 7pm-ish Eastern/6p Central at Justin.tv
Hey there members of TGWTG who happened to stumble across this blog, this is my series of video game review podcasts. If you haven't seen my first blog, than check it out, the first 7 episodes are there. As usual, here are 7 more episodes, and the next 7 should come next Wednesday.
At this point in the reviews, I went to my radio teacher for a bit of advice. He suggested the sound effects, a regular time limit and adding a score system. He's also the one that said I should put it online as a podcast. So, this is the point where I started taking it more seriously and working harder on it. Originally, these shows were produced between November 21st 2009 and January 16th 2010.

They had less to say than Sony, but talked about it better.
This was just a random Skype chat I had with my friend Blaze on the topic of Mario's full name that I thought was funny enough to edit and upload.
You may have to turn the volume up to hear me a bit better; also this was just for fun and not to be taken seriously :)
1996 was an interesting year given the PS1 started cranking out RPGs. Not all of them were good, but dammit they tried! As a result, this is when the SNES really kicked it into full gear to try to compete. Overall, it was a very good year for console RPGs, but that's not to say there weren't any good PC RPGs. There were only 15 games, so this should be quick.
