Greetings, I'm Shibby, also known as "The Man Behind the Mask".
Here once again to recap the most recent round of the NHL Playoffs.
PainKiller: …and I’m back too!! Wow second round and two sweeps out of four, seems the East has really different views on what I thought who the winners would be! Tells you how much I follow the east.
No kidding right? Well let's take a gander at each of the matchups that took place in the second round of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Western Conference
(1) Vancouver -vs.- (5) Nashville => Vancouver won in 6 games
Yet another close series for Vancouver, with each game, save for one, being decided by only one goal. Nashville put up a valiant effort, but alas, the one forward from Vancouver that they could not seem to stop was Ryan Kesler. The Canucks, for their part, were able to find that tiny hole in the wall guarding the Predators' net, known as Pekka Rinne, just enough to get them through the series. We may have to keep our eyes on Nashville in the coming years, as they seem to be greatly improving with each new season.
PK: YES.. OMG YES!!! They did it.. first time in 17 years the Canucks are heading to the Conference Finals!! Such close games I was literally on the edge of my seat watching the games… I think only once I was sitting back on my couch. Strangely so far.. THIS round this was the series to watch. Det and SJ so far have been shaping up to be close to, and we are still waiting to see if Det can pull the ultimate comeback! But for now I just have to say COME ON CANUCKS! Make this Fan proud this year!
(2) San Jose -vs.- (3) Detroit => San Jose won in 7 games
This is what happens when a former Detroit assistant coach leaves to become a head coach of another team and duplicates the system employed by Detroit with his new team. You get two teams that were so evenly matched it was unreal. But it all boiled down to a series of hairs. San Jose was just a hair above Detroit in the first three games, while it was Detroit that was that thin hair above San Jose for the next three games. Then finally San Jose regained the slight edge for game seven to take it all. Both teams played spectacularly, but one team ended up with that one hair that tipped the scales in their favor.
PK: Looked like SJ had it in 4 ... they looked to be the third of four teams to pull out the sweep. THAT was not to be the case! Detroit made it a series, the series I thought it would be! Granted I was only 2 goals away from my Detroit in 7 pick, however, SJ proved they wanted it more than Detroit. Now it is the start of the third round and SJ gets two nights to rest and Vancouver has been looking over the tapes and I hope to see them ready to go in the next round!
Eastern Conference
(1) Washington -vs.- (5) Tampa Bay => Tampa Bay won in 4 games
This one caught many if not most by surprise. Granted, I predicted that Tampa Bay would win the series, but I did not not think they would do so in only four games. However, even though Washington got swept, they still were are very strong team in this series. With the exception of game four, all of the games were decided by only one goal. (The fourth goal for Tampa Bay in game one was on an empty net, so even though the final score was 4-2, it was basically a one goal game) The Lightning just had their key players deliver clutch performances when they were most needed. The key players from the Capitals unfortunately were unable to do this. And that is why Tampa Bay is moving on, while Washington is going home.
PK: OK .. WHAT THE HELL?!!? I mean really, the East is blowing away my predictions! Tampa Bay in 4? I have to hand it to them, I don’t think anyone saw that coming from anywhere. This is amazing, the East is not what it was in the standings for the season, that is for sure! It was very close, just like the other series in the west. Will Tampa Bay have what it takes to take them to their second Stanley Cup final. Well only time will tell! Congrats to Tampa Bay for making me and probably thousands of others drop their jaw’s in disbelief!
(2) Philadelphia -vs.- (3) Boston => Boston won in 4 games
Well Boston can now leave behind the reputation of being the team that lost to Philadelphia after they had a 3-0 series lead on them. This year they made sure to knock off the Flyers when given the chance. Though Philadelphia for their part seemed to play with a bit less intensity in games three and four. Add to that the fact that their instability in the goaltending department finally caught up to them, and you have the Boston Bruins moving on while the Flyers are going home.
PK: (Hangs head in shame) Philly let me down! Where was the hitting.. where was the crowding.. Where was the damn team!! Boston showed up and Philly didn’t! They didn’t have a Goalie they didn’t have anything, I was very very VERY disappointed in this series. It could have been classed as a boring series. I hope these two teams don’t forget what happened next season, I want to see blood next time!!!
Okay, that is it for the second round of playoff action, and once again my luck holds true with all of my picks winning. It is kinda freaky actually, but hopefully my luck holds true again for the next stage. Now let's take a look at the third round matchups.
Western Conference
(1) Vancouver -vs.- (2) San Jose
The two top teams in the west during the regular season and now the two top teams in the west for the playoffs. Both teams have had 3-0 series leads that they have squandered this year, have had their goaltenders go from hot to cold and back again, and have great depth to their teams. Whatever happens here, it will be another tough series for both teams.
I pick: [San Jose in 6 games] ... sorry PK.
PK: You know Shibby.. you are scaring me.. you really are.. I really hope there is ONE of the series you will get wrong and I hope THIS is the one you do. I have to go with my boys on this one. I rather it would have been Detroit because Van could have probably run over Detroit with no problem. San Jose though, they are getting stronger as the rounds continue. Granted they fell asleep for three of the seven games vs. Detroit. Let's hope they do the same for FOUR of the 6 Games vs. Vancouver.
I pick [Vancouver in 6 games]
Eastern Conference
(3) Boston -vs.- (5) Tampa Bay
Both teams feature two of the best goaltenders in the playoffs. But, can the tough and gritty style of play of the Bruins handle some of the top scorers of the post-season from Tampa Bay? Thomas vs. Roloson, Chara vs. St. Louis...
This could be a long series.
I pick: [Boston in 6 games]
PK: I think I might have to go with you, Boston may be the more powerful team, but, I don't know.... god both teams have surprised me this play off year. Thomas will come out the victor, it won't be a long series.
I pick: [Boston in 4 games]
And there it is. Our predictions for the third round, which starts later today.
Thanks for joining me once again on the road to the Stanley Cup PainKiller.
PK: Anytime Shibby… When it comes to hockey, I’m all about the sport! When it comes to the Canucks YOU know where to find me when they are playing on the 2011 road to the Stanley Cup!
Well that is all for now. See you guys again after the third round.
