All-ah-wanna-say-issat, they don't really care about us! Aaaaaaah! |
Well, well, well. We meet at last. I remember being so busy defending would be turd Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, I barely had time to defend Dragonball. I certainly didn't want to watch it. My Dragonball experience is roughly two weeks of Z, which taught me that the franchise takes it sweet time to make stuff happen. The movie has much less time to develop an arch, yet somehow manages to waste what time it has.
The film opens to narration, but you can skip it. It's repeated wholesale later. But if you must watch it, it says that once there was an alien bad guy named Piccolo, and he and his minion Ozaru pretty much had the earth by the balls. But then some mages did a suicide spell and cast him to the center of the earth. But he just escaped. I would have liked to see the escape.

Welcome Back! In this week episode, we actually took one episode and broke that up into two parts for this segment. With this being Part A, we discuss Bubblegum Crisis OVA Moonlight Rambler. This has vampire boomers, boomers named after dogs, boomers dressed like Two Face, and boomers that can blow up the whole world!! We also have a roundtable discussion about BGC Fanfiction (and some fanfiction in general) from Amanda, then we make mention to things like Twilight (which is not compared to this episode AT ALL!!!!), Evangelion, school shootings, robberies, Masami Oobari, Kawajiri, Lord of the Rings, Snatcher, me mispronouncing Anri, and more!!!! Join the crew with our guest One Pixel Jump and Amanda Stair Duran.

...Well this week episode we still explore the projects of Mega Tokyo where we see bodies of fallen AD Police and Outland bike riders scattered across the highway which we discuss the Bubblegum Crisis OVA's 3 and 4, "Blow Up" and "Revenge Road". This has people ricing up there super cars, more es'ploding police copters, taking down the corporate butt kisser, getting evicted from the corporations, and playing unprotected paintball. This episode also has its share of internet problems (on my end) where I threaten my modem with a sledgehammer to get the thing to work, but my co-host and guest are there to take the slack of course. All this and more in this weeks episode.

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the beloved cyberpunk anime classic Bubblegum Crisis. Then we move in to our second part where we cover the first two OVA's, Tinsel City and Born to Kill. We pretty much make fun of the AD Police, anime "enGrish", Mackie, the Sabers themselves and so much more, but we give this anime a lot of credit and fun, because this anime is fun all around. So join me as we have our guest from the Anime Graruru and One Pixel Jump podcast with our other special guest, Amanda "BGC know it all fangirl" Duran. From Doomed Megalopolis:
"There is a man who has been trying to awaken the spirit of Masakado and bring ruin to Tokyo. He is a creature squirming between light and darkness. The people call him ONI."--Narrator
I had hesitated from doing this one because I got the impression it was so incredibly obvious. "Oni" = "Japanese Demon." What more is there to say?
But scholars will argue there's actually a LOT of stuff that gets overlooked when you try to simplify the concept of oni into simply a Japanese "demon." When we hear the English word "demon," it has a biased connotation. Most of us automatically assume a "demon" is a paragon of evil--a ruthless spirit whose only purpose in life is to cause destruction, misery and mayhem. Part of those qualities do translate to the Japanese Oni. But there's always a side that people seem to miss, and that's the productive side of the oni. The difference mainly stems from the fact that the Japanese mythology doesn't share the same ideas about the polarity between "good" and "evil" as Christian mythology does.
Most of the ideas I'm about to relate in this post are derived from the book Japanese Demon Lore, by Dr. Noriko T. Reider, a professor of Japanese studies at Miami University, Ohio. Japanese Demon Lore traces the evolution of the concept of the oni throughout Japanese history from ancient times to more contemporary manifestations in pop culture. The main reason I cite this book though is that it has a great lengthy English article about Teito Monogatari; probably the biggest one I've ever come across. Likewise most of info and research in this little post will come from this book, which I wholeheartedly recommend if you're interested in how Japanese folklore ties into the modern Japanese mindset.
When a lot of people hear the word "oni", they immediately think of the classic image of a giant ogre-like creature with fangs, red skin, and a big sharp weapon of some kind. Years ago in ancient Japan, the word "oni" did not have this connotation. It referred to an invisible entity or spirits that caused harmful effects upon people. It wasn't until Buddhism came along (it is believed) that oni began to visualized as monstrous, animalistic creatures. Buddhist religion boast many different kinds of ferocious beings which populate the hell. Examples include the "gozu" (ox headed demon) and "mezu" (horse headed demon). Like in Christian mythology, these demons are tasked with punishing captives in the realm of the underworld. So scholars believe the concept of "oni" became mixed up with these creatures and formed the concept of the oni as we know it today.
The difference between the Buddhist view of demons and the Christian view of demons (from what I understand) is that these demons are not actively opposed to divine authority that controls the world. In Buddhist mythology, demons are not only ultimately powerless before the Buddha and his enlightened followers, but they also will usually change their allegiance and serve these mystics as their slaves and guardians.
This dynamic also transfers to the Oni too. If a powerful monk or mystic encounters an oni and defeats them, the oni is not usually expelled from Earth; rather he becomes the servant of that mystic and converts to their religion. Once converted, the Oni will use their strength and power to defend the mystic's religion, punishing those who threaten it or stray from the path of enlightenment. Enno Ozunu, the mystic I mentioned in my last post who founded the mountain ascetic religion, always had two oni present to carry out his will. Abe no Seimei, the most powerful onmyoji (Japanese sorcerer/diviner) in Japanese mythology, is said to have been able to manipulate oni to do his bidding using them as his agents to serve the Japanese Empire. So in this sense, oni are not so much evildoers seeking to cause evil as much as they are like wild creatures seeking a better purpose in life.
Now that's a great tactic for powerful saints and magic users, but what about common vulnerable Japanese peasants? How can oni, who are destructive and constantly looking for human breakfast, be of service to the commoners? There are stories though about human peasants who benefit greatly from the presence of oni. For example, there is a story of a female oni who visited the cottage of an old couple so she could give birth to her child. The old couple complied and the oni gave them great treasure in return to show her gratitude. In this case, the oni becomes an object of reverence for the commoners as it clearly is a symbol of, not only power, but wealth as well. In Christian mythology, it is unacceptable to worship and willingly cooperate with the devil or his kind under any circumstances. But in Japan, the demons serve a dual role as both destroyer and protector, so occasional cooperation with these big dangerous creatures is a necessity.
In whatever case though, initially the "oni" is an outsider--a creature on the fringe of society looking in. You see in this case, the term of oni can be used to refer to social deviants who don't follow the customs of Japanese society. For example, the violent female oni Uji no Hashihime is considered to be the symbol of a wild woman rebelling against her subservient status in old patriarchal Japan. Some scholars believe that the term was ALSO applied to foreigners who would invade Japanese soil, bringing with him/her strange teachings and tools. Taken to the extreme, the term "oni" can also be used to apply to a person or group of people who don't serve the Japanese Empire and/or are enemies of it. In WWII, the government and the media referred to the Allied citizens and leaders as "oni" in their propaganda. Since they aren't working for the Japanese Empire, they must demonized in some fashion.
One of the most famous oni of Japanese folklore is the Shuten Douji, a giant, cannibalistic oni king who lived out in the mountains with his band of oni followers. There are many variations of the story of his reign and death, but the basic gist of the tale goes like this: Back in ancient Japan, women around Kyoto were disappearing. The emperor contacted Abe no Seimei to help him locate the source of these troubles. Seimei determined that oni who lived in the mountains were coming down to Kyoto and kidnapping women. In response to this, the Emperor sent out the great warrior Minamoto Raiko and his four great retainers to rid the land of these invaders. Raiko and his crew disguised themselves as monks and snuck into the audience room of the Shuten Douji, who, along with his oni followers, had assumed human shape and was having a feast on the organs and blood of kidnapped women. Raiko and his followers offered Shuten Douji some sake to make him drowsy. After the feast, Shuten Douji retired to his chamber to sleep. Raiko and company navigated through the lesser oni and snuck into Shuten Douji's chamber to discover the oni king, who had assumed his hideous true form, in deep slumber. Raiko drew his sword and chopped off the oni king’s head...which flew around the room and tried to bite off Raiko's head in revenge (he was saved by his helmet). Raiko and company brought the oni head back to Kyoto and erected it in the treasure house. Afterwards, the heroes were rewarded handsomely by the emperor.
Hey gang!
This weeks installment is us still stuck in AnimEigo land with the most enjoyable, crazy anime OVA I have seen in a long time, Battle Royal High School. This has space police, giant teddy bears, King (from Tekken), cracked out fairies, exploding trees, and venus flytrap women, this is not even hitting the surface. We also mention things like movies and video games, and some side discussion. This can be split up really into 2 parts, as part 1 is our review, but part 2 is the show PRE-Drama we had that I will not explain anything, we let our own CG do that. All this and more in this weeks episode.

Least Favorite:
Dragonball Z and GT: Long, boring, and repetitive fights that never seemed to end. Stories that are absolutely horrible and off and on body counts that make some hollywood movies jealous. GT isn't as long but story still sucks.
Gilgamesh. Horrible story that makes no sense and pacing is slower then a turtle. Just really boring with ending that makes no sense.
FLCL. Second most over hyped show behind DBZ. Not even close to funny and makes no sense at all.
Super Milk-Chan. Horrible animation, horrible jokes, horrible story. Just bad.
Ghost Stories ADV dub. I like adv but this dub was so bad and not funny. I felt I so dirty that I need a shower after watching it.
Anything Yaoi. Anime with guys getting together. Yuck!
Lain. Confusing story and even more confusing ending.
Paronia Agent. Almost as confusing as Lain but story that was worse.
Le Chevalier D'Eon, Long and boring. Plot that seems pointless in the end a whole sister thing seem nothing excuse for some yaoi action.
Blue Drop. I wanted to like this but pacing and story was just so boring. In the end was just excuse to set up story continued anywhere but in Anime form.
Dracula: Sovereign Of The Damn. I will let sage and linkara's review of this awful piece of garbage speak. It is really bad.
Frankstein. From the people that horrible made dracula comes Frankstein. With dub cast featuring people that was also in Robotech. Not kidding. It is really bad.
Starship Troopers. No not the new movie coming out. I'm talking about the 80s ova that was never released in the US. The aliens look about as much as woman body part as does varvoids in the doctor who episode. Opening featuring random girl running on a beach.
Want to see horror of Frankstein and Starship Troopers: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLACCECCA21BA2468A&feature=plcp These are taken by me from Anime Next 2011 Bad Anime Bad panel.

Spoilers! I'm back with a new account and name. I was supermutant. I just couldn't change the name but wanted to try this one. Originally posted on web site but a bit updated with award to one ending so bad that it deserves it own spot.
Warning the following has major spoilers.
Top Ten Worst Endings in Anime:
10.
Gun Frontier. It ends with story unfinished, bad guy getting away, and
nothing settled. One of those series left open for more but never
happen or will probably never happen.
9. Final Fantasy Unlimited.
Several cast members that sometimes more interesting then other cast
member scarifice themselves to stop main villian. Afterwords you have
no idea Ai, Yu, there parents, Lisa actually survive as you see them
either dead or knocked out. You see there friends seemingly come to
pick up them but there is nothing after that if they make it back to
earth or they even are alive.
8. Burst Angel. Joe and Sei seemingly scarifice themselves to stop the bad guys. There are to many characters fate left open and
Meg may or may not by the only survivor but she finds Jo's scarf tied up
on a pole. Did Jo life after all? We never find out.
7. Gurren Lagann. Simon and Nia get married. Then Nia disappears/dies from defeating the spirals.
Then
see what seems to be a old man or older simon really looking like he
has been alone all this time. Real sad and sucked man.
6.
Revolutionary Girl Utena TV. Utena seems to die but you never see or
confirmed her being dead. Anthy seems free and leaves school but before
pretty much seems to think Utena is alive. There is no real conclusion
to if she is or not. If she is sucks it is a bad ending.
5. Tokko. The show ends with Sakura scarifing herself so Ranmaru
save the world. Then you Sakura in a comma like her brother before and
it seems bad guy isn't dead after all. Sakura opens her eyes and it
ends. There is no more to it. No more to the manga.
4.
L/R. Great series with last episodes with more twist and turns that
keep me wondering till it was over. Problem was it didn't end where
should have. It ends with Rowe either shot or stabbed in the back by a
coward out of nowhere and then Jack seems to be killed too. They don't
show what happens. The last scene after credits seems to show them in
their white car driving off saying where to next before going to white
but are they dead? Who knows. It ends there.
3. Neon Genesis
Evangelion TV and End Of EVA Move. Well obviously the FMA creators
never watched Eva because they would have learned a lesson. TV show
ends with a run of money two episodes that are confusing and are just
bad. Then the movie spends most of the earlier part killing off a good
part cast and then second half humanity. The movie ends with Shinji be
given the fate humanity in apocalyptic world with Asuka. Then the movie
ends with Asuka looking as hurt as rei was in episode 1 saying she
hurts. That is how ends. Nough said.
2. Full Metal Alchemist First
Series and Movie. How do you mess up ending twice? You end the TV show
with Ed stuck in our world and then end the movie with Ed and Al stuck
in our world in pre world war II Europe. As a matter of fact the last
thing you see is a bad sign. Even though there is OVA that shows Al as
old man but creator said that it may or may not count.
1.
Gilgamesh. Where to begin. Show confusing plot ends with of the WTF
moments in Anime history. Bad guys win and the world ends. Then a new
humanity appears just to kill. Now that is wikiapedia says that was
about. I'm lost on it.
Award for worst ending so bad it can't even go on list:
School Days. Murder. Beheading. A love triangle gone wrong. Jealous ex stabs boyfriend while claiming she is pregnant. That current girlfriend stabs her open to see if she pregnant kill her. We get to see a point of shoot from with in stab wound. OMG! The girlfriend takes the decapitated head off on a boat to end the show.
One of the first blog posts I wrote was about the "kodoku" (worm toxin magic). In the animated TEITO MONOGATARI (DOOMED MEGALOPOLIS), there is actually another incarnation of the "kodoku" spirit that appears near the end of the first episode that I forgot to mention. I didn't think much of it at the time because I don't think this creature appears in any other version of the story and I assumed it was just more stylistic excess added by the writers of the anime. But I have to remember though that the animated TEITO MONOGATARI is the version of the story that is most well known in the West, so I should address it. I thought I'd make up for it by writing a short entry just devoted to this beast as portrayed in the anime. I'm going to be referring back to my first post about the kodoku so please read that if you haven't.
There's a climactic scene near the end of episode one of the anime where Kato sneaks a nasty monstrosity disguised as a nurse into Hirai's temple to sabotage his ceremony. We know this creature is another form of the "kodoku" spirit because it's an insectoid beast and it literally spits out toxin. The confirmation is given to us by Hirai, who, just as the creature approaches him, exclaims "He [Kato] hasn't learned anything yet. He's still using the 'fukuchu-mushi' (inside belly worm)." Remember I said in my entry on kodoku that a "kodoku spirit" can assume the form of a beast or a monster. The first version of the kodoku spirit that we see in the anime is the worm (the fukuchu mushi) that Yukari pukes out on the riverbank. The monster that pops out of the nurse is the same creature, just a much more powerful version of it.
But I'm sure many English viewers who watch the anime will be asking "Where the heck did that thing come from!?" The anime's narrative doesn't make it clear. I always assumed that it was just a monster Kato summoned out of the abyss or maybe it was Kato himself. But that doesn't take into account that nobody seems to be surprised at the nurse's presence nor does it take into account the hypnotic powers of the fukuchu mushi. So allow me to share my thoughts on this rather vague plot point...
As I said in my entry about kodoku, in all adaptations of Teito Monogatari, Kato injects the stomach worm egg into Yukari to hypnotize and mentally control her (meaning his intent in the anime is the same). The worm, being an incarnation of Kato's kodoku magic can assume a variety of forms both small and large. In the anime, the egg of the stomach worm is depicted as an eyeball. We see Kato injecting it into Yukari early on in the anime when gives her an evil "kiss".
After this scene, Yukari is hypnotised and under Kato's control.
...HEYOOO!!!!
So the crew got themselves off the Ice Prison and now landed on a jungle planet in this weeks AnimEigo review of Crusher Joe's "The Ultimate Weapon". This has political corruption, angry military women, a big mutha of a bomb, microbot machine bugs somethings, and the Crusher's themselves. Actually, we all didn't like this OVA to well, so we decided to talk about Dirty Pair, video games, movies, AnimeCon 1991 clips on youtube and we also hit up our mailbag. We even give you guys a sneak peek at next weeks review, so don't miss out on that. This and more on this weeks installment of the Cool Kids Club Podcast.

My first ever internet review! Lemme know what you guys think of it, I worked really hard on this as, after all, you only get one shot to make a good first impression.
Video clips and screen-shots belong to Pokémon and The Simpsons, and music is ‘Pokémon (Gotta Catch ‘Em All)’ as sung by Powerglove.
Muchos Gracias Hombre's!!!
This week we had a bit of trouble on the AnimEigo train, as we found ourselves in space and doing hard time on the Ice Prison in this weeks review of the Crusher Joe OVA. This has space lasers, Space America, space beach planet with girls in star nipples, annoying robots with annoying co-workers and machine gun hands. We also mention things like how Funi is suing ADV and a ton of other stuff, and say our goodbyes since we killed off ChibiGoku on our show for the time being. All this and more in this weeks episode.

Hey gang!
To keep this AnimEigo nostalgia train-a-goin, we talk about probably the best anime OVA of all time, which has made the best anime/manga series of all time that not many people know of sadly, which this is Riding Bean. This has Girls, Guns, Cars, Girls with Guns inside of Cars, Fumanchu' cops on the edge with awesome cars, and kevlar made skin tones. We also were so cool enough (just ChibiGoku) to have someone inside Square to get a copy of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and we all give our take on the game with our special guest Tony. Oh don't worry kids, we are not big enough jerks to spoil EVERYTHING about the game!!!!

So this being my first blog post I'm going to discuss the best 11 Anime of all time. Specifically referring to television series. Some of these may be in the more obscure line of Anime works, but don't be alarmed, they are all indeed great series.
11. Fullmetal Alchemist Series 1
...SUP GUYS, WHATS GOING ON!!!!
So yea, we are back again to show off more of past titles of AnimEigo's company that they have probably long forgotten about, but we havent, where we review Metal Skin Panic Madox 01. We also mention a few things like the Wonder Years on Netflix, Miyazaki birthday, some cool guys, and we hit up our mailbag. Just hope the FCC doesn't shut us down this time.

...Finally! The last part of our look at Baccano! This week, we look at Graham Spector, one of the craziest characters on the show, and trust me, that is saying a lot!
...Surviving in a post apocalyptic world can be a blast with a personal computer that is unsure of its own calculations and a disembodied voice armed with a Wii Remote and caffeine.
This is my first Wii Let's Play. I'm still getting used to a few things but any feedback or tips are welcomed.
We continue our look at a series which throws continuity out the window. Immortals, mobsters, train heists and lots and lots of blood and guns. This is part two of our look at Baccano!, on Anime For Dummies!
Visit
...Let's see what looks interesting.
Description of the anime below, and also don't forgot to share with your friends. ^,,,,,^
Busou Chuugakusei Basketarmy: The story is set in August of 2026 at the Fuji Training Facility. Tōko Natori (voiced by Ami Koshimizu) is a third-year middle school student in the Eastern Defense Academy — Japan's first private organization to be established under the National Defense Education Law two years earlier.
Tōko is entrenched in field training with instructor Kamiya. It has been a harsh training regiment, but it is finally the last day. Kamiya proposes a "extracurricular class" under the name "Newest Weapons Research." But then, an incident occurs that turns the training facility into a sea of blood.
Another: Spring, 1998. Recently transferred to Yomiyama Kita Middle School, Kouichi Sakakibara (15) gets the feeling something isn't quite right with his class, who all seem to be afraid of something. He finds himself attracted to the strange yet beautiful Mei Misaki, but his efforts to get closer only confound things further. Then there is a horrible accident... What on earth is happening in this place?
Senhime Zesshou Symphogear: Created by video game producer Akifumi Kaneko and Elements Garden composer Noriyasu Agematsu, this new series follows two girls in a musical group named Zweiwing. Together, they must protect Earth against a threat known as "Noise" by donning weapons called Symphogear.
Recorder to Randoseru: Recorder to Randoseru follows two unique siblings— Atsushi Miyagawa, an 11 year-old boy with the height and looks of an adult, and his elder sister Atsumi, a 17 year-old with the short frame of a child. Even though Atsumi looks like a grade schooler, she needs to look after her brother, who despite his tall physique, still acts his age. The anime is based on Meme Higashiya's four-panel manga.
Kill me Baby: Sonya is an assassin, but in between all her missions, she still has to go to school like every other kid. She's joined by her fearless, but air-headed friend Yasuna, and a girl name Agiri, a ninja from her organization. The manga is based on the four-panel manga series of the same name, which ran in Manga Time Kirara Carat.
Kyousogiga: Three kids are stuck in a strange city causing massive mayhem through the land. They are searching for an atypical rabbit in order to return home. Koto, the eldest of the three, seems to have some sort of connection to this weird place ruled by a monk, a demon, and a priest.

Reviews marked under the "Moe-tality" sign are dedicated to the positive analysis of said, possibly underrated series.

... I decided to write this blog entry upon hearing the terrible news that
Bandai Entertainment will no longer be releasing their anime titles in a
physical format and give my honest thoughts on the subject. Granted, I
would of loved to see this happen to 4Kids Entertainment in which
eventually came to pass. Hallelujah! However, Bandai Entertainment was
the last anime distributor in the U.S. I wanted to see quit and I never
expected they would go. We now have four anime distributors that have
gone belly up or quit in the U.S. anime market: Central Park Media,
Geneon Entertainment, Bandai Entertainment and the only company to make
it through restructuring: ADV Films aka Sentai Filmworks. This of course
leaves us with only Sentai Filmworks, Funimation, Media Blasters and Viz
Entertainment, the latter two more focus on manga then with anime.
So where does this lead for us anime fans? Well first off, expect
much less choices for anime fans in the U.S. For example, if you were
hoping for a Blu-Ray re-release of Cowboy Bebop or Gurren Laggan or
perhaps a complete series box set of K-On, well, now you can write that
off! This also leads to many new anime releases in Japan that may never
see the light of day in the U.S. anime market. Poor Nichijo, I was
looking forward to that anime! I was also praying for the day the
Idolm@ster anime was going to be announced, but alas, it looks
increasingly obvious it may never be brought over!
Also, less competition in the U.S. anime market naturally means that
anime in the U.S. is going to become more expensive. Expect complete
series box sets to go from the forty to fifty dollar range to sixty to
seventy dollars or even more! In one extreme example, the Blu-Ray box
set for Fate/ Zero has been announced to cost a whopping $500! Like hell
I'm going to pay that much money for a thirteen episode box set! Pardon
my language but, f*** that! I could buy a brand new TV for that much
money!
And sadly, what this all comes down to is that it opens the door for
more internet piracy of anime. Which of course means less money for the
show's creators, less work for anime voice actors and much less for
aspiring anime voice actors like me. It also means more lay offs and
downsizing, and of course, may also lead to more anime distributors
going bankrupt or quitting the U.S. anime business entirely and
ultimately, less choices for anime fans in the U.S.; a continuing
downward spiral.
What it all comes down to is that the U.S. anime industry has become a
mere shadow of what it once was in the late 90's to the early 2000's and
from what I have seen in these past few years, it may never fully
recover. Bottom line, what a terrible, terrible way to start the year
off!

2003 Anime Drama (Japanese with English subs)
So before I even begin watching this one I’d like to note
that Netflix apparently think that I’ll love this one. It’s predicted something like 4.1 stars
out of 5 and has been in my top 10 recommendations since I signed up for the
service. Well, it keeps with my
week’s pseudo theme of holiday-themed movies that I forgot to watch over the
holidays, so let’s see what it is.
So, it seems that this film is sort of an animated Christmas version of three
men and a baby – that is, if the three men were an alcoholic ex-gambler, a
religious, haiku-spouting transvestite, and a surly teenaged girl, and if the
baby were found in a garbage room, instead of on a doorstep.

If you happen to be a hardcore, niche-oriented gamer with a particular taste over unique Japan-imported interactive extravaganzas, chances are you might be familiar with the name of Yui Haga. If you're not familiar with the name itself, you're bound to at least be aware of its most renouned visual products - specifically, the outstanding artwork for the acclaimed Tactical-RPG meta-series known as "Disgaea." Which also makes him responsible for giving actual shape to everyone's favourite demon penguin slave, the Prinny.

If you are wondering what kind of projects does Haga-san busy himself with when he's not drawing pictures of flat-chested half-naked succubi... well, he's actually drawing and writing stories about flat-chested half-naked succubi. Yui Haga, as an independent artist (and I use the term loosely), is quite renowned for his huge lolicon fanbase. In other words, his stories are made for an audience of paedophiles - I am not even kidding here. The person that provided a unique aesthetical dimension to the self-aware, self-bashing satyrical bonanza that defined part of the appeal of the "Disgaea" franchise, when left alone and without direction, actually conceived and published a serialized manga about a 10 years old girl discovering her "love" for a young male adult. Thus, something like "Lotte no Omocha!" (literally translated as "Lotte's Toy!") was allowed to exist in this world.

Movies that were released in US in theaters/DVD this year that I saw. One note is that I haven't seen X-Men First Class yet but I want to. Some on this are not going to be agreeable to others.
10. Green Lantern. I didn't hate this movie a lot of people do. I think they got a lot of characters right but story wasn't to great. Well they tried to combine two villains into one and didn't work. Probably would have been better if they had made Sinsetro the villain but still enjoyable to me.
9. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. I didn't hate it as some did. You get what expect and if expecting anything else well you are going to be greatly dispointed.
8. Priest (At least uncut version on the dvd) I heard this movie was bad and then watched the dvd. It's really good but maybe dvd version is better cut then the one that was released in theaters.
7. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. After the mess of season 2 and endless 8 Haruhi gets back to being what should be. Fun. Yes it goes a little to long but it is interesting story and it's fun.

Anywhoozle, the leader of the Samurai Troopers, Ryo, is given a surprised birthday party by his fellow troopers. Sans, of course, Seiji, who went to New York. Ryo notices a news report on Seiji's Korin armor being spotted in NYC and decides to go there himself. But his friends all anticipated this. Touma goes there first with Nasuti and Jun (nice job taking civilians on a potentially dangerous mission) while Shu and Shin take the plane Ryo's on. Apparently, Seiji was lured to America by a supposed find of a family artifact. As the plane flies over the city, it's attacked by Fyvush Finkel and like Sully, the pilot makes a water landing.

I love Neon Genesis Evangelion. But it's a polarizing show. Some people think it's brilliant, some think it's trash. Some people think it's brilliant for the wrong reasons. Some people don't pick up on why it's good because they feel betrayed by it not being what they originally thought it was and fail to miss its real complexities. But, for whatever reason, pretty much any discussion you're going to encounter about Evangelion, pretty much any message board thread and the like, is going to go the same way. And this is why I avoid discussing Evangelion most of the time. Not because I'm afraid of debating it, but because it's such a pointless excercise at this point.

After this morning's post regarding my plans to end Anime Recommendations, I got some comments encouraging me to continue the series. And after a little personal reflection, I've decided not to end it. In fact, I'm planning on possibly taking it in a new direction.
I want to make reviews of short anime I find when I click the "Random Series" button that is on most anime streaming sites. They're going to be longer, and more detailed than my current recommendations series. I'm trying to come up with a clever name. Random Button Adventures? Maybe. I'm changing the schedule to every three weeks to give me more time to absorb, understand, and critique the series, instead of dredging up dusty old memories.
Now, I "might" do this. I haven't decided whether to fully replace Recommendations, or make a second review blog. But I'm leaning more to replacing it, since I don't want to double my work so early.
The whole reason I wanted to start this blog and Tumblr by the same name was to get the chance to talk about some older anime and manga series that might have been overlooked through the years, as well as discuss the history of these series and other trends. And, of course, offer some opinions on the series themselves. So what better a series to begin with than one of my favorites…

Bride of Deimos is one of those beautiful 70s manga that never saw much of the light of day overseas. It ran in Princess from 1975 to 1990, amassing over 17 volumes in total and ending on a cliffhanger. There was a 1988 OVA made as well, Bride of Deimos: The Orchid Suite. Never released in the US, it only recently got a sub job in May by BlueFixer (you can download that here).
In 2002, an American distributor by the name of ComicsOne began translating the series into English. Unfortunately, only the first seven volumes ever managed to make it into print form before ComicsOne disappeared. On March 25, 2005, most of there series were taken over by DrMaster. Bride of Deimos was not one of the series picked up and since then no other distributor has tried.

WARNING: CONTAINS OPINIONS! (also spoilers)
Not too long ago, I wrote a post discussing a few things I found irritating about many review series. One of those things was the mindless praise that some series end up getting. I mentioned how it hurt the review process by both reducing the amount of valuable information the viewer gets and bundling all viewers into a single group, which hurts no matter how you feel about the work. But there’s another thing that bothers me about this kind of praise, and that’s the effect it can have on anyone who doesn’t feel the same way.
Have you ever had a series that everyone around you enjoyed except for you? The reason you don’t like it could be anything, but it’s something that can’t easily be changed. It can make you feel annoyed or possibly disturbed when everyone else praises it for reasons that have nothing to do with you. I’ve seen it happen before, particularly when one review disagrees with the others and gets shunned for it.
With that in mind, I thought I should tell you something about myself. It’s going to illustrate my point, but more importantly, it’s going to help me say some things I should have said long, long ago. I’ll start off by giving you the short version:
I hate Madoka Magica.
There may be some people out there who find that hard to believe. If so, then congratulations, you’ve proven the point I’m trying to make. Yes, I can understand why some people out there like it, but I understand even better why I don’t.
I should start off by explaining how I started watching this series, because it’s a little different than what most people would expect. See, I used to go to an anime club. It was a good club, and it got me into quite a few series, but not everything they showed me was great. Partway through one meeting, they turned on a show about magical girls. This was before the hype-wagon started up, so I had literally no idea what would happen later on in the show. And my overall reaction to that first episode? “Eh.” The characters were bland, I couldn’t find anything to identify with, and even the trippier visuals reminded me of the episode of Dream Eater Merry we watched half an hour before.
Of course that didn’t last forever, and eventually we got to that moment. You all know what I’m talking about. It’s the moment that, in my opinion, best solidifies the difference between how I saw Madoka and how everyone else did. Because when most people saw that scene, their reaction was “Oh wow, I’ve never seen anything like this before!” And when I saw it, my reaction was “Oh God, not this again!”
Anyone who knows the name Mohiro Kitoh (or Joss Whedon, I guess) knows about stories that pretend to be something they’re not. They present their audience with an established setting and then, with all the subtlety of a Michael Bay film, take something away to reveal how serious the show is. Maybe they’ll kill someone or nuke something or, in one case, have a cute side character put a knife to her own wrist. I’ve seen it happen enough times now that, frankly, it’s gotten old. If a series wants to impress me, it has to do more than that.
That’s another big problem I had: I didn’t care. What I saw before that moment was a set of stereotypical characters (the hero, her BFF, the mentor, the furry thing, and the dark one) in a stereotypical setting. After that, the series suddenly decided that I cared immensely about them without giving me any other reason to. This is why I find it funny when people say that non-anime fans would like this show, since it was clearly tailor-made for the magical girl audience and the reactions they would have.
But even after all that, I had difficulty finding anything to connect to. I didn’t think it was possible, but the characters felt flatter after episode 3 than before it. Apparently in this world, “deep characterization” is equivalent to “has a single-minded obsession with one other person”. It really felt like Sayaka’s immediate reaction to anything is “Yes, but how does this affect my relationship with Kamijou?” Hell, her witch fight seemed to loudly shout at the audience that there isn’t one other thought in her head.
Homura was even worse, since her obsession seemed to greatly cloud her judgment. I actually asked a few people about her odd actions during the show, and I was told that she doesn’t care who dies if it doesn’t affect her relationship with Madoka. I have two very big problems with that, though. One, how does that make her likable? Two, how does that explain her letting Kyouko kill herself when she’s the one person who could help her?
And as for Kyubey, you could argue that his obsession is the entire point of his character. Maybe it is, but doing it on purpose doesn’t make him any more likable than the others.
Madoka herself had a different problem, in that she had almost no personality of her own. It’s a common problem in a lot of shows, and simply having her cry a lot doesn’t fix it here. At least other bland leads know how to fight or get some kind of romantic subplot or something. Madoka, for most of the series, never felt like more than a MacGuffin with feet.
Then there’s Kyouko. Her introduction, in all honesty, was easily the high point of the series. She had a different way of thinking than the others, she provided actual personal conflict, and she seemed to have a pre-established relationship with the older girls. Sadly, this didn’t last long. At the end of episode 6, the show decided to throw out their conflict and her entire personality because those things weren’t dark enough. Kyouko got the same “deep characterization” as the others and became focused almost entirely around her relationship with Sayaka. I’ve honestly never seen a character this cynical, yet this easy to befriend, since her tragic backstory should make it far harder to get close to her than that.
That brings me to the other big issue I had with this show: the big shock moments feel overdone. I understand that finding out your soul is in the palm of your hand can be distressing, but was it really enough to cause Kyouko and Sayaka to have complete personality changes? After seeing and experiencing all that they’ve gone through, I find it very hard to believe something so metaphysical could affect them like that. This isn’t the only time it’s an issue, either. I officially have to call bullshit on the idea that Mami would shoot her own friends after learning the truth about magical girls. After the encounter with Witch!Sayaka, she didn’t say anything or even wait a full minute before shooting Kyouko, and yet it’s treated as such a hard decision. Do you understand yet why this show can be irritating?
It’s especially hard to believe in contrast to their indifference to what should be the most shocking part of the show: finding out the existence of witches in the first place. These girls walk home from school one day to find the world warping around them and horrible monsters emerging to try and horribly kill them. After the encounter, their first reaction to the whole thing is “Aw cool, you have a musket!” Throughout the show, I never got the feeling that witches were that big a deal. Even after seeing Mami die fighting one, they’re sad about the death of a friend, but it never seems to register that it was a witch that did it. Hell, they’re marching back into witch lairs the very next episode! Do these girls have strong wills or not?
I think, to conclude all of that, I should say what I think is really the problem with Madoka Magica: it tries way, way too hard to be dark and depressing. It resorts to a lot of tricks to catch the viewer off guard – massive tone shifts, multiple consecutive shock moments, trippy visuals, zooming in on a villain’s face for dramatic effect (did anyone else find that funny?) – but it felt like it was all just an act the show was putting on to look cool. I’ve seen and enjoyed quite a few dark series, like Claymore, Darker than Black, Psyren, or anything by Naoki Urasawa, but the difference is that those series didn’t need to try to be dark. They just put together a well written story, and that’s how it ended up coming out. I haven’t watched Fate/Zero (and after this show, probably never will), so I can’t say if this is what all of Gen Urobuchi’s shows are like, but it seems like he’s desperately trying to be a certain kind of writer, and for me, that just hurt more than anything.
That’s how I felt about Madoka Magica, and you might never have guessed that this was possible from the hype it’s been getting. That’s why I feel like mindlessly praising a series is a bad idea, because not everyone feels the same way as you do about something. I probably wouldn’t hate this series the way I do if not for the ridiculous hype it gets. Again, I can understand why people like this series, since the overall art-style is so different, and if you like those kinds of characters, it can leave you feeling very emotional. Or so I’m told. But you should also try to understand how not everyone likes the same sort of shows, and try not to shove your viewpoints down their throat.
With that out of the way, let's get to business. This weeks recommendation is:
Excel Saga
Excel Saga, which premiered October 7, 1999 and ended March 30, 2000, is based on the manga of the same name, which is based on the doujinshi Municipal Force Daitenzin by Rikudo Hoshi. It was directed by the man with the world's coolest afro, Shinichi Watanabe. The studio was J.C.Staff, who have anime like Revolutionary Girl Utena and Azumanga Daioh under their belt. And finally, it was licensed by Funimation.

Higurashi is a murder mystery based on the visual novel of the same name and is about Maebara Keiichi, who moves to the fictional Japanese village of Hinamizawa. He befriends a group of girls, Ryugu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Furude Rika and Houjo Satoko, and joins their after-school club. After a while, Keiichi begins to discover disturbing things about the village's past. I won't go into spoilers territory, so do yourself a favor and check it out. Oh, and, by the way. There are scenes of blood and violence involving minors, so if you don't like that kind of thing, try to brave it out, because it's totally worth it for the story. Also, yandere.
I have a couple of "review" blogs that I use to recommend anime and music, and from now on I'll mirror new posts on here. I'll post my previous recommendations after this. I've only written three for each so far, but the latest ones are my best so far. The first two lacked in quality to me.
I love Christmas. It is my favorite holiday and every year I start to watch my favorite specials, movies, etc around thanksgiving. Here is a list of some of my really favorite ones especially the ones I watch every year. I start before thanksgiving and that is why I am posting this.
30. South Park and Robot Chicken christmas episodes.
29. Prancer
28. Animanicas: Helloooo Holidays
27. Ren and Stimpy: Have Yourself A Stinky Little Christmas
26. WWE Tribute To Troops. What wwe does every year for the troops is amazing especially during the holiday seasons. In previous years they actually would go over in perform in Iraqi or Afghanistan. Now they are paying tribute to those station here in the US too. Wrestling may not always be great but showing some love for the troops during the holidays is.
25. Ranma 1/2 Christmas TV and OVA episodes. Anime rarely have christmas episodes or specials but Ranma has a good time with it.
24. Live Action How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I know people are going to hate this but I love Jim Carrey as the grinch. I love this movie and how it fleshed out the character.
23. Jingle All The Way. I love this movie despite what NCritic said about it. It's funny and Arnold is just dad looking to get the gift for his son. That something all parents can relate with.
22. Micky's Christmas Carol. Fun retelling of the classic with Disney characters.
21. Justice League Christmas Episode
20. Xena Christmas Episode. Yeah it wacky origin of Santa but fun and well xena was wacky as it was. It knew it was and embraced it. Nice little bit at the end with the donkey and who they give it too.

14. Ziggy's Christmas Special. Sort of forgotten christmas special but very heart warming. It is dvd so I say track it down if you can. Ziggy tries to raise money for charity but ends up in a scheme that wasn't for kids. How it gets out of it and how un selfish he is truly a great thing. There isn't much dialogue wise but there didn't need to be.
13. Miracle on 34th Street (1994). Yes I do like the remake better then original. I just love the cast and this such a great story.
12. Garfield christmas special. I love garfield and this one awesome special. From wacky opening to really touching moments with awesome grandmother.

7. Scrooged. Billy Murray is one of my favorite actors and this movie shows why. He funny and plays a great scrooge in modern times.

1. A Christmas Story. Okay I know this is a beloved christmas movie and for every reason. It's a classic and I enjoy to watch even if its on dvd or on tv during 24 hour the maarathon. Who couldn't sympathize with a kid that really wants something for christmas but told he can't have it.
Honorable mentions: Elf, Doctor Who: The Other Doctor, Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol, Sonic's Christmas Blast, GI Joe Christmas Episode, Die Hard 1/2, Lethal Weapon 1.
Well yeah thanksgiving isn't for a few weeks but wanted to get this out before thanksgiving.
Things I'm Thankful For In 2011:
Cablevision getting BBC America. Now I can finally watch Doctor Who and others shows. It can also catch up to them.
Shout Factory releases Transformers: Headmasters. It's about freaking time this series came out in USA. It was released in UK on dvd but never hear. Next year Masterforce and Victory will be released on DVD too and can only hope it leads to Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo coming out here too.
Galaxy Express 999 and Demon City Shinjuku coming out on dvd and announcement of Lupin III TV Season 1 coming out next year. I love the company putting these Anime out.
Power Girl and Stephanie Brown fans. DC may have given the screws to these characters but the way fans have gone to bat for these characters give me some hope for my fellows again.
Trigun Badland Rumble. Seriously the fact that this movie came out this year is awesome. Trigun is a favorite Anime of mine and really awesome that they finally made something new.
Barbara Gordon gaining back her ability to walk back. I was never a fan of what Killing Joke did but her return to Batgirl worried me. Now Stephanie Brown hasn't appeared yet and makes me worried that she will die in Batman Inc special. I am really enjoying the new Batgirl series and don't find the fault some do. I think they want barbara to just be perfect and looking for anything to complain. Her freezing up issue one makes perfect sense. Though I would like her to be able to walk but still be Oracle because she had retired for a while before being shot. So character wise she could have gone that route without needing to lose ability.
Batman: Arkham City. Awesome game and I love that it just as good Arkham Asylum or just even better.
Captain America and Thor. Two really big surprises this year when it comes to movies. Both were awesome movies
Finding That Guy With The Glasses web site. I love this site and recommend it to anyone that hasn't yet. Reviews Movies, Comics, Video Games, Anime, Manga, Music. This is my kinda site as a nerd/otaku.
Sailor Moon and Sailor V being published by Kodansha. I am a big fan of Sailor Moon and the fact that manga is getting released is great. Is fun read again after all these years and we finally get V manga. Sailor Moon manga is different enough from anime that can be enjoyed on it's own. I love the fact that it's doing so well sales wise. Shows that Sailor Moon is still popular beyond ton cosplay at conventions.
