Sploich Reviews Scream 2 (1997)

in Film Review

I really don't have a lot to say about this one so I'm going to be very brief. I guess I need to explain the plot, of which there is none. After the release of a movie based on the events that took place in the first Scream, Sidney (Neve Campbell) is having to deal with a copycat murderer on her college campus. She also has to deal with Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox) getting in her way and the newly released from death row Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber).

This movie is beyond lazy. It straight up tells you that it's going to be a worse movie than the first, and as far as quality goes that's definitely true. This movie pulls the number one thing you cannot pull in a horror film which is to be utterly boring and slow-paced. There are very few kills and they are spaced out quite a bit. The people who get killed have even less emotion behind them than in the first movie so I never really care when any of them get it. Some people are only on screen long enough to explain why they exist in the movie before being killed and not fulfilling that existence.

And again, my biggest problem with the first was that these movies do not know whether they want to be legitimate horror films or if they want to just make fun of horror films. At least in this one you have a lot less talk about movies, especially in the third act. There is a little bit more subtlety in some of the referencing and there's actually one scene that I genuinely liked, but mostly it's just a boring guy stabbing a couple people just like the first.

That's really the biggest problem. I feel like the main point of the Scream movies is actually to take those clichés and tropes that it's mentioning and make a better movie. It's smug and it's pretentious, and what's worse is that it fails on every level. It feeds into its own clichés and becomes what it is making fun of. If that's the purpose then it's not something I want to see and if it's not the purpose then they are failing. It's basically a series of movies that tell you to go watch better movies.

Ryatta Reviews: Onimusha 3 - Demon Siege

Today I'm looking at Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, the 3 game in a currently abandoned series by CAPCOM. Onimusha is a great series that just unfortunately never made the sales to keep new games coming out. While not an RPG either, the earlier titles having more in common with Resident Evil games, they do incorporate more RPG elements as the series goes on enough to warrant reviewing as well as the poor sales leading to an under appreciated series that needs more attention.

The first game was a release title for the PS2 and sold very well, enough to guarantee a sequel and told the tale of Samanosuki Akechi (modelled after real life actor Takashi Kaneshiro and is the fictional brother of the real life Mitsuhide Akechi) as Nobunaga was revived after making a pact with demons. He's granted a magical gauntlet that allows him to fight the demons and become an Onimusha to fight them. So people are rescued and the lord of demons is destroyed, so moving on

The second Onimusha introduced a whole host of new characters, new protagonist Jubei Yagyu, (modelled after the late Yusaka Matsuda) takes up arms against Nobunaga who escaped Samanosuki in the first game when his village is destroyed by demons. Yagyu is half-Oni as his mother was an Oni so he has access to the same abilities as Samanosuki without the need of a magic Gauntlet. Eventually after working with a group other other playable characters Nobunaga is defeated and all is well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Now, I'm not a brilliant reviewer of games and all I can do is give you my honest opinion. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and bash it for the sake of bashing it. No I haven't played BF3 but I've played the BF1 demo. Am I a crazy, protective CoD fangirl? No. I am a regular gamer reporting the pros and cons of MW3.

This is part 3 of my reviews on the Mass Effect 2 DLC. You can read the first 2 parts of the review here:

Anyway Arrival is the final DLC released for Mass Effect 2 and supposed to the start of the bridging between Mass Effect 2 and 3, along with various other spin off media. After the bucket load of awesome that was the Lair of the Shadow Broker everyone was expecting excellence in all areas, and does it deliver something unforgettable? Ultimately…  No.

The Awesometeer vs The Top 100: #32 The Godfather Part 2

To follow up last week's blog on The Godfather I figured that I might as well as review the sequel right afterwards, so today's review is The Godfather Part 2.  Like I mentioned last week I have never seen these movies so all I knew about this one is that it is always on "the best sequels of all time" lists.  Oh, and I also know according to almost everyone the third one is stupid.  Anyways, lets get on with the review.

As I mentioned before the first Godfather has had a huge influence on culture and I think the same can be said for this movie.  These two movies work so well together that I think it would be difficult to separate the impact of each movie. The one thing this movie has offered us though it one of the best sequels in film history.  Now not all sequels are great in fact most aren't:

I know some of you might not agree with my list and to you I say, my opinion is more important so keep your comments in your pocket.  This film not only is one of the best sequels ever but also cleaned up at the Academy awards.  It won six Oscars for: Best Writing, Best Picture, Best Music, Best Director, Best Art Direction, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (De Niro); as well as being nominated for five other awards.

Now it is time for everyone's favorite part.... the internet ratings!!!!!
IMDB = 9 out of 10
Rotten Tomatoes (Critic Rating) = 98%
Rotten Tomatoes (Audience Rating) = 96%
So despite many people feeling this sequel surpasses the first movie the internet rating are all slightly lower.  I wish the internet could make up its mind.

Now it is time for my favorite part.... my own review!!!!  Acting once again was fantastic.  Though I was sad that characters like Tom were in it a lot less.  I really enjoyed his character in the first one and just would have liked to see this character built upon more.  Diane Keaton returned as Kay and though her acting was good, man do I hate her character, but I feel that the character is supposed to stir up emotions in us, it is one of those characters that, depending on how you view the morals of other characters, is either likeable or you hate her.  The bad guy in this film was fine but the character was not anything spectacular.  There is also a character named Frankie, the actor was nominated for an award and when I saw that I didn't even know who the character was.  You see, I am really bad with names when there are a lot of characters so some of the names slip through the cracks of my brain.  Anyways, he did a good job and his character was good as well.  Now for the Corleone Family we have Talia Shire, playing Connie, who is not only annoying but barely in this movie.  Yet, she was nominated for an Oscar!  How?  How does this happen?  She was only in it for ten minutes total yet it was Oscar worthy:

This is part 2 of my Mass Effect 2 DLC review, the first part can be found here:

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/blogs/latest/entry/ryatta-reviews-mass-effect-2-dlc-part-1-overlord

I don't think it’s a huge leap to say that the Lair of the Shadow Broker is the crowning jewel of the Mass Effect 2 DLC released so far. It gives a big expansion to the Shadow Broker, a character, like the Illusive Man from the first game who was a major plot point early in the game and follows on from dialog Shepard and Liara have in ME2.

NCfanboy's Kung Fu Panda 2 Review

in animated movie review

The First Kung Fu Panda revolutionized film media by not only having one of the most creative concepts out there, but also being Dreamworks first CGI film without Pop-culture references. Now after three years of waiting, our lovable Panda (Jack Black) returns, now in 3D! The story of this film is Kung Fu is near it's end because of the invention of the cannon, created by a corrupt peafowl called Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), so Po and the Furious Five set out to defeat Lord Shen while Po is also curious about his origins. This is how sequels should be made, not only by being as entertaining as possible, but also giving characters more development than they already have while also telling a compelling story to match. We also have new characters that are just as compelling as the ones in the first movie, but by far my favorite new character is Lord Shen, not only because he looks cool, but he finally made peacocks look threatening, and I was surprised to find out he was voiced by Gary Oldman! The only downside to this movie was the lack of screen-time for Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) which is a real shame because he was like the Master Splinter (from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) of the first movie. Overall, Kung Fu Panda 2 is by far one of the best sequels I have ever seen, and it makes me want to see a part three (if any). Just don't get me started on Cars 2.

Still not feeling too hot, so here's another supplement.  On a very cautious basis, I'm going to start heading INTO THE FUTURE!  There are 37 games this year.  This was one of the toughest years I've encountered so far...possibly the toughest.  In advance, I'd like to say that making the top 5 list this time around was NOT easy and as a result, a lot of great games totally tied for multiple places.  This was a year of many highly successful RPGs.

There were 13 games this year.  This is a year where I start to see more and more that I'm familiar with, yet the top 3 are still fairly obvious.  Hopefully it won't become too hard restricting myself to just 3 a year, but...well, I mostly did that because of 1999, which depresses me, so I won't talk about it anymore right now!

This time around I will changing things up a bit.  I will only be doing a top 3 for each year and I'm hoping that will suffice as some years have barely any adventure titles released.  I'm also trying to be as accurate as possible, which is proving to be difficult considering most of these are labeled either incorrectly or in poor chronological order on Wiki.  In fact, let me know if something's out of place or missing on these as I've been updating their "official" list with THEIR OWN INFORMATION...so yeah.

Yet another gigantic year for RPGs.  There are 29 games!  This will probably be the last year I do, at least for a while, so let's not wait any longer and just hop right into it.

1996 was an interesting year given the PS1 started cranking out RPGs.  Not all of them were good, but dammit they tried!  As a result, this is when the SNES really kicked it into full gear to try to compete.  Overall, it was a very good year for console RPGs, but that's not to say there weren't any good PC RPGs.  There were only 15 games, so this should be quick.

This was another easy year.  And yes, I'll likely be annoying PC gamers, but before I do, consider this:  all 5 of the titles selected were either PHENOMENAL or the best of their respective series.  There is literally no reason they should be on the top 5 list and the only one I really feel bad about not including is Breath of Fire 2.  There are 20 games in total, so let's get started!

This year will be easy.  Why?  Because the only tough part about it is not highlighting certain games I know are great, but not the best.  I went into this one expecting it to be as tricky as the last two years, then realized I knew exactly which 5 should be at the top within 30 seconds.  There are 25 games, but you only need to remember these...

Starcraft 2, a video review.  It's a good game, just stays in the same repetitive traditional RTS formula with pretty graphics and weak storytelling.  Just like Avatar.
