Ah, yes. The music of the 1980s. Cool stuff, that. It's really quite amazing how popular it was then. Even stranger still is how popular it seems to be now. It makes sense for me to have the radio in my car set to my local 80s station, though. I grew up on the stuff, after all.

Another thing from the 80s I grew up with was the cartoons. I've already done a few articles about those, and I gotta say, I still love most of them to this day. That's why I've taken the time to write about them.

But have you ever wondered what might happen if somebody tried to combine the music and the cartoons of the 80s? You wouldn't be the only one. It actually happened in 1984, when a show called Kidd Video debuted. It combined the craziness of the Saturday Morning genre of the era with the oftentimes memorable sound of the music at the time and the recently-formed television music video to create something that lasted only a couple seasons. While that was about as long as it could have lasted, it wasn't nearly long enough, far as I'm concerned. But hey, no matter what, it was good while it lasted.

In the unknown futuristic year where a dystopian society is separated by two classes; the wealthy upperclass known as "The Mind" who spend most of their days maintaining the utopia as well as enjoying themselves with games and parties, while the working subterranean lower class known as "The Hand" who must toil night and day through 10-hour shifts to keep the machines that run Metropolis running. The son of the man in charge is Freder (Gustav Froehlich) who leaves the security of his Pleasure Gardens to follow a girl named Maria (Brigittie Helm) to the lower depths. He is shocked to discover the cruel treatment of the workers and his protests fall on deaf ears to his father (Alfred Abel) so he switches places with a worker going under the number 11811 (Erwin Biswanger) to discover firsthand not only the pain of 10-hour agonizing work but also the leadership of the kind and loving Maria who promises a mediator to come and bring the two classes together. But this secret meeting is eavesdropped on by Joh Fredersen and the mad scientist Rotwang (Rudolf Klien-Rogge) and Joh orders Rotwang to use his robotic woman to take on the form of Maria and infiltrate them. But things don't go as planned as the robotic Maria causes the workers to revolt and destroy the machinery. Can Freder stop this madness before it's too late or will the perfect utopia be forever destroyed?

Originally released in 1927 under the direction of Fritz Lang, "Metropolis"reveled in the science-fiction genre and has since that time, has been remade in anime form in 2001 and has become one of the most influential science-fiction films since Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey."However, it pains me to say that the film is not complete. Not that it wasn't finished, but because there are parts of the narrative that are lost. The reason being that when "Metropolis" was taken over to American to be seen by it's American audience, many parts were edited and cut down for time. Then, in a tragic accident, the original complete copy Fritz had was lost in a fire, thus, leaving the world with the cut down American version and any other existing copies at the time were left to the enemy of time and they aged down. Over the years, negatives and still surviving copies were found in an attempt to bring back the original narrative of what Fritz Lang original had in mind. Over the years, the missing sections of the film from before were relocated and edited into the film but for years, certain scenes such as a fight between Joh Fredersen and Rotwang are still missing and could be somewhere in the world, waiting to be reunited with ti's master and fulfill the creativity of Fritz Lang's vision and his themes of class structure and morality.

But, regretfully, that is not this film and yet, it IS this film.

In 1984, Academy Award-Winning composer of "The Midnight Express","Scarface", and "Flashdance" Giorgio Moroder attempted to bring this beloved science-fiction film to the mainstream with a restoration and re-edit of what he assumed was the original script. Now his version used a soundtrack of artists by popular artists of the time, like Pat Benatar, Billy Squier, Freddie Mercury, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant, Bonnie Tyler and Loverboy (because when I think of a silent movie, I think of Loverboy) as well as music created by Giorgio himself. Admirable as his attempts to bring this film to a new audience.

Well, hate to say it, but, I think he should have left it alone...

It's saddening to think that this incredible film would be edited or released this badly, especially by someone who clearly had all the right intentions in mind but, by a fault, didn't create a restored classic to the mainstream; he just created a giant music video. When you have all these songs that play along with the film for certain scenes. Namely the songs by Pat Benatar and Bonnie Tyler; the songs are just too love ballad-sounding and they don't fit the scene's subtlety that the original soundtrack gave it. It changes what can be assumed as a theme of Class system having to find a middle ground to becoming a contrived love story where the characters barely seem to have any time to develop themselves. However, seeing that this was released in 1984 and certain footage that would have helped the narrative was still unknown at the time, I guess I can sorta let it slide…but to a certain extent...

in What's Up?

Well, with all the procrastination and other laziness I've been demonstrating lately, I decided that it was about time I made myself a commitment or two, just to keep myself on task a little better. Since I just finished up a Recent Discoveries article on a classic 1980s show, I figured why not do four more? And then, in part due to the list I keep in the folder I keep my writing in when I'm not working at home, I remembered a comment I left on the NBComics episode of Linkara's Atop the Fourth Wall back in August: Saturday morning cartoons before the blocks of the late 1980s and on came into being.

I've already done one or two shows that might have counted, so there really weren't all that many that came to mind when I saw that episode. These are the first four that came to mind and I didn't recall having seen here before in some way, shape, or form:

For someone who's been a fan of this kind of show for as long as I have, you'd think I would have grown up with Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. Somehow, though, I missed it until I came across it on Hulu while I was working on the BraveStarr article back in 2009. Yes, it's kind of sad that it's taken me this long to get to it, but I wanted to see the whole series, or at least as much of it as was available, first. Now that I have, though, it's time to get down to it.

Part of the reason one might think I would have watched this back in the 80s is that it had a similar theme to another show I did watch: the aforementioned BraveStarr. The general theme of both shows was that of space police of one sort or another having adventures and saving the day. The biggest difference in that area was that BraveStarr was just one guy protecting a colony; whereas Galaxy Rangers was about a team based on Earth that would go around the galaxy to do their jobs.

Well, trying this as an experiment, and looking for opinions on the matter.

I know, I do the MUD2MMO thing, but after seeing one review in particular, this was in my head. And circumstances led to some pent up energy that needed out. When the world beats one down, some people drink, some do drugs, some people get into fights. I make stuff. And since my tools are in another state, I do it virtually.  Making things cheers me up, what can I say?

So trying my hand at a more traditional musical nostalgia review of 1980's music videos.  In this case, WTF videos.  I'll grant that there's TONS I left out, but no apologies, these are pretty "WTF" centric.

If there's a piqued interest, I also have a barebones script for a few other shows in a similar vein, 80's nostalgia.  Hey, that's MY generation.  I remember going to Great America and playing coin-op video games while people pumped money into the VIDEO jukebox.  I remember how to get the pacman glitch, ok?  I REMEMBER GORF and QBERT and SINISTAR!   HA!

good grief, I'm ancient.

Anyhow, so a brief experiment in a new format and show, and looking for your opinions.  So, what do 'yall think?

Welcome to the Ladies and Gents' Department at Grace Brothers Department Store, where we have the finest in English fashions from the Seventies and Eighties! And stick around for adventures and characters you might not expect as well.

But now that I actually take time to think about this one, it's actually kind of hard to come up with more than just generalizations about things other than the characters. At least I've got a place to start, anyway.

This particular fictional Ladies and Gents' Department was run by Mrs. Slocolmbe and Miss Brahms in the ladies section and Mr Humphries, Mr. Lucas, and a rotating third gentleman in the men's section. Their direct supervisor was an ex military guy who went by Captain Peacock, who, with the aid of his Seventies Porn 'Stache, kept a close eye on the action. In charge of everyone was the department head, Mister Rumbold.

In the weird, lost world of VHS rental stores, I came across some strange titles, and even stranger cover art. One of my favorites, however, was 1982's "Basket Case", directed by a crazy fellow named Frank Henenlotter. The movie looks grainy, trashy and sometimes, childish. At least, until a stop motion mutant conjoined twin starts tearing people's faces off.

The movie starts off with a guy named Duane walking around carrying a picnic basket and going to some trashy hotel. Turns out, his conjoined twin Belial is in the basket. The two of them have a plan, which is to kill off a bunch of doctors that separated them, then threw Belial in the trash. Yes, you heard right. I mean, come on! It's the 80's! You can't just throw your patients in the garbage (or your house mother in the pool, but that's for another day) and expect not to get brutally demolished!

The effects are completely insane in this movie. I've never seen stop motion this frightening and hilarious at the same time. The creature basically just climbs on people and I guess scratches them, although I'm not entirely sure how he kills them, or how he can even move. But believe me, he can move.

Duane meets Sharon and they start getting frisky. Of course, that is also a no-no in the 80's, and since Belial and Duane have a psychic connection, Duane starts having fears that Belial will kill Sharon. So he races over to her house and sure enough, after trying to rape Sharon, Belial has killed her. Again, I don't know how he thought he was going to rape her...or kill her...but he managed it somehow.

So Duane starts losing his patience just a tad and runs out into the streets carrying Belial. They end up in a hotel room...and there's some ball grabbing. I won't tell you the ending, but I will say it doesn't really matter, because there's two more of these movies.

So if you like complete insanity, stop motion madness, and low budget mayhem, this is a nice little 90 minute film for you, that has a neat sense of humor, and is definitely not in the mold of most horror movies.
